A Colorimetric Sensor Array Based on Ag Deposition on the Surface of Au/Ag Nanoparticles for accurately Discrimination of Baijiu

Yiyao Luo,Huan Liu,Xuhui Xia,Huizhen Fu,Mingyi Guo,Changjun Hou,Danqun Huo

Baijiu plays an essential role in Chinese food culture, but there are still certain limitations in the identification of the aroma type and brand of Baijiu. In this study, based on the Tollen’s reagent, a colorimetric sensor array was constructed for aldehydes and Baijiu discrimination. In the presence of aldehydes or Baijiu, the silver ions (Ag + ) adsorbed by negatively charged nanoparticles can be reduced to elemental silver (Ag 0 ) in situ. Ag 0 deposited on the surface of gold or silver nanopaticle (Au NPs or Ag NPs) leading to the formation of Au@Ag or Ag@Ag core-shell structure which accompanied by a color change. We developed Tollen’s reagent-based sensor array shows the outstanding detection capability in discriminating and quantifying of aldehydes. On this basis, 16 kinds of Baijiu were also identified accurately, the visual results were verified by HCA and LDA models. The colorimetric sensor developed in this study is promising for aroma recognition and brand identification of Baijiu.

Catalytic Application and Mechanism Studies of Argentic Chloride Coupled Ag/Au Hollow Heterostructures: Considering the Interface Between Ag/Au Bimetals

Liu Jun,Wu Zhaohui,He Quanguo,Tian Qingyong,Wu Wei,Xiao Xiangheng,Jiang Changzhong

Abstract For an economical use of solar energy, photocatalysts that are sufficiently efficient, stable, and capable of harvesting light are required. Composite heterostructures composed of noble metals and semiconductors exhibited the excellent in catalytic application. Here, 1D Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures are synthesized by galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) from Ag nanowires (NWs). The catalytic properties of these as-obtained Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures with different ratios are investigated by reducing 4-nitrophenol (Nip) into 4-aminophenol (Amp) in the presence of NaBH 4 , and the influence of AgCl semiconductor to the catalytic performances of Ag/Au bimetals is also investigated. These hollow heterostructures show the higher catalytic properties than pure Ag NWs, and the AgCl not only act as supporting materials, but the excess AgCl is also the obstacle for contact of Ag/Au bimetals with reactive species. Moreover, the photocatalytic performances of these hollow heterostructures are carried out by degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) under UV and visible light. These Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures present the higher photocatalytic activities than pure Ag NWs and commercial TiO 2 (P25), and the Ag/Au bimetals enhance the photocatalytic activity of AgCl semiconductor via the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET) mechanisms. The as-synthesized 1D Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures with multifunction could apply in practical environmental remedy by catalytic manners. Graphical abstract

Engineering Ag-O-Mn bridges with enhanced oxygen mobility over Ag substituted LaMnO3 perovskite catalyst for robustly boosting toluene combustion

Bing Li,Fulin Deng,Zheyu Li,Hao Xiong,Shuqu Zhang,Weili Dai,Jie Zhang,Lixia Yang,Jianping Zou,Xubiao Luo

Perovskite oxide, as a promising candidate for volatile organic compounds combustion, is incapable in practical application at present due to its low intrinsic activity resulting from inadequate active oxygen species. However, balancing the concentration of active oxygen species and robust structure for perovskite oxide is still challenging. Herein, an efficient perovskite-based catalyst (denoted as TA-La 0.9 Ag 0.1 MnO 3 ) was constructed through Ag substitution and subsequently tartaric acid etching of LaMnO 3 , which exhibits robustly boosted catalytic performance for toluene combustion compared with pristine LaMnO 3 , causing a ∼100 °C lower T 90 . In this study, Ag substitution could weaken the La-O hybridization, which effectively facilitates La cations removal by subsequent acid etching, thus sufficiently exposing active Ag and Mn species and generating more surface lattice oxygen, but also constructs Ag-Mn-O bridges within the matrix of Ag substituted LaMnO 3 . Acid etching enables the activation of Ag-O-Mn bridges with strong electron transfer ability from O to Ag atom, promoting the mobility of lattice oxygen, and consequently the low-temperature oxidation ability. Additionally, the exposed Ag and Mn as Lewis acid sites can effectively improve the adsorption capacity toward toluene molecules, which synergistically facilitates the toluene abatement. Notably, TA-La 0.9 Ag 0.1 MnO 3 also exhibits superb long-term stability, water-resistance, and high thermal stability up to 650 °C.

Facile preparation of core/shell Ag/Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) with Ag plasmon-enhanced photo-Fenton activity towards RhB degradation

Liu Jun,Wang Hui,Chang Meng-Jie,Li Wen-Juan,Bai Ge,Xie Heng-Xue,Li Xin,Du Hui-Ling,Song Shi-Jie

MIL-100(Fe) has been demonstrated as a commonly used photocatalyst but is limited by the deficient charge separation efficiency and difficult recovery. In this work, by taking advantages of the strong plasmonic absorption and electron conductivity of Ag nanoparticles, as well as the fast magnetic response of the Fe 3 O 4 , core/shell Ag/Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) (AFM) was facilely prepared by a direct hydrothermal reaction between H 3 btc and Ag/Fe 3 O 4 (AF) for photo-Fenton degradation of RhB assisted by H 2 O 2 . Specifically, the Fe 3 O 4 in AF acted as both ion precursor and protector to inhibit Ag aggregation to obtain uniform and dispersed core/shell AFM. By adjusting the MIL-100(Fe) thickness and the Ag proportion, the optimum AFM exhibits superior photo-Fenton activity to decompose 88.5% RhB within 30 min under visible-light irradiation and H 2 O 2 addition, which is much higher than that of AFM in the presence of either light (58.5%) or H 2 O 2 (46.6%) due to the synergistic effects of visible-light absorption by MIL-100(Fe) and ·OH generation from H 2 O 2 . Moreover, the catalyst can be collected conveniently for its strong magnetic responsibility. This work may be beneficial to the development of effective photo-Fenton catalysts. Graphical abstract A novel magnetically recyclable Ag/Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) with special core/shell structure was facilely synthesized by hydrothermal method with superior photo-Fenton activity for dye degradation.

Ag nanoparticles interlayered Fe3O4/Ag/m(TiO2-ZrO2) magnetic photocatalysts with enhanced stability and photocatalytic performance for Cr(Ⅵ) reduction

Xian Li,Jiafeng He,Weilong Zhang,Lijun You,Jumei Li

A sandwich structured Fe 3 O 4 /Ag/m(TiO 2 -ZrO 2 ) magnetic nanosphere with Ag nanoparticles as an interim layer was fabricated with in situ deposition of Ag nanoparticles onto Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres and subsequent coating an outmost shell of mesoporous TiO 2 -ZrO 2 . As compared to Fe 3 O 4 /m(TiO 2 -ZrO 2 )/Ag with Ag nanoparticles as the outmost layer, unique Fe 3 O 4 /Ag/m(TiO 2 -ZrO 2 ) sandwich nanospheres possess higher efficient charge migration and larger specific surface area disclosed by the BET and photoelectrochemical characterizations, so they present improved photocatalytic activity toward Cr(VI) reduction. In addition, they have high thermal stability because mesoporous TiO 2 -ZrO 2 outmost shell could protect the interim Ag nanoparticles from damage and agglomeration at high temperature. Results showed reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) of Fe 3 O 4 /Ag/m(TiO 2 -ZrO 2 ) reached 98.4 % in 30 min, as 1.6 times as that of Fe 3 O 4 /m(TiO 2 -ZrO 2 )/Ag. The Fe 3 O 4 /Ag/m(TiO 2 -ZrO 2 ) still obtained 91.3 % and 87.9 % reduction ratio after calcination at 500 ℃ and recycling 5 times, respectively. The photocatalytic mechanism was also revealed by scavenger experiments and ERP analysis. This work provided a good example for further design and preparation of magnetic photocatalysts with high performance for the remediation of heavy metal pollutants.

Significant surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect of Ag-loaded iron hydroxide enabled by coordination effect between Ag and hydroxyl group

Xiangyu Meng,Jian Yu,Jingjing Wu,Yuening Wang,Xiaoyu Song,Ziyan Xu,Anran Li,Lin Qiu,Jie Lin,Xiaotian Wang

The effective monitoring of trace carcinogens in the environment and daily necessities is very important for humans. Here, Ag-loaded iron hydroxide (Ag/Fe(OH)3) was designed as an excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate and used for the trace detection of carcinogenic aromatic amine p-aminoazobenzene (PAAB). Due to the weak binding ability of Fe3+ with OH−, Fe(OH)3 presents a strong coordination ability with Ag than Co(OH)2 and Ni(OH)2, resulting in the prominent adjustability of Ag/Fe(OH)3, including the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property and energy band structure. On the one hand, the dielectric environment of Ag nanoparticles is changed due to the coordination effect of Ag and OH−, among which the LSPR of Ag/Fe(OH)3 in the visible region is significantly enhanced. On the other hand, the energy band gap of Ag/Fe(OH)3 is reduced by increasing the content of Ag, achieving effective photo-induced charge transfer (PICT) under excitation at 633 nm. Comprehensively, an enhancement factor (EF) of 1.23 × 106 was achieved for 4-ATP molecules through the synergistic interaction of LSPR and PICT. Importantly, Ag/Fe(OH)3 presents an ultra-low detection limit for PAAB (10−9 M), which is of great significance for the trace detection of carcinogenic aromatic amines.

Accumulation of Ag(0) Single Atoms at Water/Mineral Interfaces during Sunlight-Induced Reduction of Ionic Ag by Phenolic DOM

Haibin Li,Dan Qiao,Menghui Chu,Lirong Guo,Zhaoli Sun,Yafei Fan,Shou-Qing Ni,Chen-Ho Tung,Yifeng Wang

Silver (Ag) undergoes a complex and dynamic Ag+/Ag0 cycle under environmental conditions. The Ag+ → Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) transformation due to the combined actions of sunlight, O2, and dissolved organic matter has been a well-known environmental phenomenon. In this study, we indicate that this process may be accompanied by a pronounced accumulation of Ag(0) single atoms (Ag-SAs) on the minerals’ surfaces. According to spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and high-energy-resolution X-ray adsorption fine structure analyses, humic acid (HA) and phenol (PhOH) can induce Ag-SAs accumulation, whereas oxalic acid causes only AgNPs deposition. Ag-SAs account for more than 20 wt % of total Ag(0) on the γ-Al2O3 surfaces during HA- and PhOH-mediated photolysis processes. HA also causes Ag-SAs to accumulate on two other prevalent soil minerals, SiO2 and Fe2O3, and the fractions of Ag-SAs are about 15 wt %. Our mechanism studies suggest that a phenolic molecule acts as a reducing agent of Ag+ and a stabilizer of Ag-SAs, protecting Ag-SAs against autocatalytic nucleation.

A split-type structure of Ag nanoparticles and Al2O3@Ag@Si nanocone arrays: an ingenious strategy for SERS-based detection

Zhen Wang,Chunxue Zheng,Peng Zhang,Zhulin Huang,Chuhong Zhu,Xiujuan Wang,Xiaoye Hu,Jian Yan

Herein, we report a facile strategy of combined SERS measurements based on a split-type SERS substrate, which exhibits excellent SERS activity, detection signal reproducibility and chemical stability. The SERS substrate consists of an ordered Al2O3@Ag@Si nanocone array and Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), both of which are fabricated individually. The Al2O3@Ag@Si nanocone array is obtained by ion-sputtering Ag on an Si nanocone array and then coating an ultrathin (∼2 nm) Al2O3 dielectric layer via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Ag-NPs are synthesized via the liquid phase method and then immersed in an organic solvent for liquid seal. For the SERS measurement, Ag-NPs are dispersed in a liquid containing the probe molecules and then, they self-assemble on the surface of the Al2O3@Ag@Si nanocones. Subsequently, the ultrathin Al2O3 dielectric layer separates Ag-NPs from the Ag@Si nanocones, forming massive gap-introduced hot spots. This substrate is sensitive to 1 pM Rhodamine R6G with an average enhancement factor of up to 109, exhibiting excellent SERS activity. Moreover, due to the protection of the Al2O3 dielectric layer and the organic solvent for the Ag@Si nanocones and Ag-NPs against oxidation, the split-type SERS substrate achieves an SERS signal with almost no attenuation after five months, indicating its good chemical stability.

A flower-like Zn3V2O8/Ag composite with enhanced visible light driven photocatalytic activity: the triple-functional roles of Ag nanoparticles

Peng Liu,Jianhong Yi,Rui Bao,Dong Fang

Coprecipitation, calcination and photoreduction, in a combined method, were successfully employed to fabricate a flower-like Zn3V2O8 (ZnVO)/nano-precipitated Ag composite powder. XRD, XPS, FESEM, TEM, UV-vis and PL methods were utilized to investigate its microstructure and optical performance. Results showed that the photocatalytic performance was improved due to the expanded absorption edge in the visible light region, narrowed band gap and low recombination rate of electron–hole pairs. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) showed that the band-gap of ZnVO could be narrowed by the hybridization of the O 2p and Zn 3d orbitals of ZnVO–Ag and the formed silver nanoparticles were beneficial for the excitation of the valence band electrons into the conduction band. Furthermore, the electric field distribution simulated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method suggested that the separation of electron–hole pairs could be accelerated by the silver SPR effect and the Schottky barrier between silver and ZnVO. Finally, a tentative mechanism of the photodegradation properties was explored based on microstructural and photocatalytic analysis.

Visible-light Ag/AgBr/ferrihydrite catalyst with enhanced heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactivity via electron transfer from Ag/AgBr to ferrihydrite

Yanping Zhu,Runliang Zhu,Lixia Yan,Haoyang Fu,Yunfei Xi,Huijun Zhou,Gangqiang Zhu,Jianxi Zhu,Hongping He

Herein, we have reported an effective strategy to solve the rate-limiting step in a heterogeneous Fenton reaction, i.e., the generation of Fe(II) from Fe(III), which also inevitably consumes a large amount of H 2 O 2 . For the first time, a novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst - Ag/AgBr/ferrihydrite (Ag/AgBr/Fh) was successfully developed by combing AgBr with ferrihydrite (Fh) and then in-situ generating Ag nanoparticles on the surface of AgBr/Fh. This strategy can introduce photo-generated electrons from semiconductor-based plasmonic photocatalysts to heterogeneous Fenton catalysts and significantly increase the efficiency to degrade contaminants. The presence of both AgBr and Ag nanoparticles was proved by a combination of structural characterization studies (i.e., XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS). Under visible light irradiation, the generated Fe(II) on the samples and the degradation rate constants of bisphenol A (BPA) followed the same order: Ag/AgBr/Fh > AgBr/Fh > Fh, which could be attributed to the accelerated reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) by the photo-generated electrons from AgBr and Ag nanoparticles, and also profit from the strong electron trapping ability of Ag nanoparticles in separating the electron-hole pairs of AgBr. The Ag/AgBr/Fh system could produce more hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and its catalytic performance was less affected by decreasing H 2 O 2 concentration, which suggested a more efficient utilization of H 2 O 2 . The Ag/AgBr/Fh system exhibits relatively high photo-Fenton reactivity even at neutral pH. In addition, a much lower Fe 3+ dissolution indicates that a large portion of the contribution is from the direct heterogeneous Fenton reaction in this system.

Modulating the anchoring states of Ag on TiO2 by SiO2 to boost the NH3-SCO activity over Ag-based catalysts

Chunxue Wang,Zhao Li,Xin Sun,Yuan Li,Lei Shi,Shunzheng Zhao,Kai Li,Ping Ning,Fei Wang

Ag-based catalysts show high activity in NH 3 -selective catalytic oxidation (NH 3 -SCO). The anchoring states of Ag species determines its valence and dispersion, thereby influencing the performance of Ag-based catalysts. Herein, we elucidated that the content and anchoring strength of the hydroxyl (OH) groups on support together affect the anchoring states of Ag. TiO 2 has few OH groups but high anchoring strength, the anchored Ag is in a highly dispersed oxidized state, while the unanchored Ag is aggregated in a metallic state (Ag 0 ), so it presents an unevenly sized dispersion and mainly in oxidized state. SiO 2 has abundant OH groups but weak anchoring, and can excessively agglomerate into large Ag 0 nanoparticles (Ag 0 NPs). Therefore, the introduction of SiO 2 can regulate the anchoring states of Ag on the TiO 2 support, making Ag presents highly dispersed Ag 0 NPs, thus following a reaction mechanism with lower energy barriers and significantly improving the NH 3 -SCO performance.

Biomimetic-Based Design of Tandem Catalysts for Efficient Nitrate to Ammonia Conversion

Longlong Huang,Ling Ye,Hui Wang,Ting Wei,Tianle Xia,Yiwen Du,Xuhai Zhang,Yongjie Ge

Electrocatalytic NO3– synthesis of NH3 (NO3RR) presents a promising alternative to the traditional Haber–Bosch process. However, The NO3RR is a complex process that converts NO3– to NH3 through a series of nitrogen-containing intermediates, such as NO2–, NO–, NOH, etc. This transformation involves 8-electron and 9-proton couplings, resulting in a slow overall reaction rate. Herein, we mimic the dual active-center mechanism found in nature for NH3 synthesis from NO3– and design an Ag-GO-Hemin-His tandem catalyst to optimize the kinetic rate of the NO3RR intermediate reaction. In situ infrared and activation energy studies revealed that Ag serves as the first active center, rapidly promoting the conversion of NO3– to NO2–, while FeN5 in GO-Hemin-His acts as the second active center, efficiently facilitating the reduction of NO2– to NH3. This dual active-center catalyst lowered the energy barrier of the rate-determining step in the NO3RR process from 11.7 to 8.29 kJ mol–1, achieving a high Faraday efficiency (FE) of 91.9% and an impressive NH3 yield rate of 3.80 mg h–1 cm–2 in a 1 M KOH and 0.1 M KNO3 solution at −0.5 V versus RHE. Furthermore, the zinc nitrate battery, assembled with Ag-GO-Hemin-His as the cathode material, exhibited a high power density of 3.28 mW cm–2 and an impressive FE of 88.6% for NH3 generation.
