Surface functionalized BN particles with grafted hyperbranched polyarylamide (BN-HBP) were prepared and used to improve the thermal conductivity and low dielectric constant of BN-filled cyanate ester resin (BN-HBP/CE) composites. The thermal stability, dielectric properties, thermal conductivity and dynamic mechanical properties of the BN-HBP/CE composites were investigated. The results illustrate that BN-HBP/CE composites with a load of 32 wt% exhibit a high glass transition temperature of 283 °C, low dielectric constant of 3.29 at 1 MHz, and a desirable thermal conductivity of 0.97 W/(m·K). Additionally, these novel materials exhibit a high decomposition temperature of 5% weight loss at 407 °C and low curing shrinkage of −0.64%. When the loading is 38 wt%, the thermal conductivity of BN-HBP/CE composites is 1.27 W/(m·K). These findings have significant implications for the preparation of high-performance substrates that meet the requirements for application as printed circuit board substrates.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with a large specific surface area and unique optoelectronic properties has good application prospects in many fields. The liquid phase exfoliation method is considered the most promising method for achieving controllable preparation of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), but the low-cost, relatively environmentally friendly and efficient liquid phase exfoliation is still difficult to achieve. Choosing a suitable solvent system is the key to achieving efficient exfoliation. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have the advantages of simple synthesis, low cost, high thermal and chemical stability and strong biocompatibility and are expected to be green solvents for preparation of BNNSs . In this paper, it was found that the properties of DESs and its interaction with h-BN had a significant impact on the electrochemical exfoliation of h-BN. The intercalation effect of DES and the compatibility between DES and h-BN were the main factors affecting the yield, while the quality of BNNSs mainly depended on the decomposition and expansion effect of DES. This rule also can be applied to prepare highly conductive and hydrophilic two-dimensional material Ti-MXene. This research explores the structure–activity relationship between two-dimensional materials and DESs, and provides a theoretical basis for the environmentally friendly and efficient preparation of two-dimensional materials using DESs as exfoliation solvents.

Incorporation of boron nitride (BN) into polymers is a promising method to obtain composites with high thermal conductivity, low dielectric constant ( D k ), and dielectric loss ( D f ), while the practical applications are limited by the poor interface between BN and polymer because of surface energy mismatch and absence of covalent bond connection between them. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) with good adhesion is deposited onto the BN. Then, a different amount of silane coupling agent containing vinyl reactive groups is grafted onto PDA-coated BN. In this way, the surface energy of modified BN (m-BN) can be adjusted to ensure BN contacts well with polymers. Moreover, reactive groups were introduced on BN for further reaction. Subsequently, covalent bonds between the m-BN and the polyphenylene oxide (PPO) were established in situ during the curing process. The effects of the m-BN surface energy on interface quality and thermal conductivity of composites are investigated. The m-BN/PPO composite achieves a through-plane thermal conductivity of 5.87 W/m · K and a low D f value of 1.53 × 10 −3 , as well as a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value (7.8 ppm/K) when the m-BN loading is 32.6 vol%. This research provides a simple and efficient strategy for fabricating high-performance composites for high-frequency applications. Highlights Hexagonal boron nitride was modified successfully by combining non-covalent and covalent modifications. Regulating surface energy and establishing covalent bonds enhances interface interaction between BN and polyphenylene oxide. Modified BN/polyphenylene oxide composites display improvements in thermal conductivity and dimensional stability as well as dielectric loss. Provides a feasible strategy for designing polymer composites with high thermal conductivity, dimensional stability, and low dielectric loss for 5G applications.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has excellent lamellar structure and electrical insulation properties, and excels in improving the corrosion resistance of coatings. By utilizing the abundant hydroxyl and amino functional groups on the polydopamine surface, h-BN is endowed with excellent hydrophilicity. Simultaneously, the polysaccharide polymer MD-GT-CS (MGC), formed by cross-linking maltodextrin (MD), gelatin (GT), and chitosan (CS), was combined with the active sites on the surface of BN@PDA, which conferred pH-responsive functionality to the BN@PDA@MGC hybrid material. In addition, cerium ions were introduced into the carboxyl and amino sites on the MGC surface, resulting in the synthesis of BN@PDA@MGC(Ce) (BPMGC), a hybrid material that combines the layered barrier properties, pH responsiveness, and self-repairing functions. The BPMGC/EP composite coating was prepared by doping the hybrid material with EP. The EIS test results showed that the |Z| 0.01 Hz value of the composite coating reached 1.45 × 10 9 Ω cm 2 after 40 d, which is an improvement of four orders of magnitude compared to EP (6.85 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 ). The results of EIS tests at different pH conditions showed that after 40 d of immersion at pH = 3 and 5, the |Z| 0.01 Hz value decreased by two orders of magnitude, but was still two orders of magnitude higher than that of EP at pH = 7. Meanwhile, the strong self-healing ability of BPMGC/EP was determined by EIS analysis of the scratched coating, salt spray test, SEM and EDS analysis of the corroded area. The experimental results show that the incorporation of BPMGC provides a new method to improve the barrier and self-healing properties of epoxy resins.

The sustainable conversion from solar energy to chemical energy is realized by using photocatalytic technology to produce hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide. In this work, the construction of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction is of great significance for improving the efficiency and stability of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) and photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production (PHP). In this study, P-doped h-BN (PBN) nanosheets are used to support the in-situ growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers via wet chemical method, and sandwich-like PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterostructures are successfully synthesized. The PHE performance of PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 (∼59.46 μmol/h) is ∼ 2.35 times than that of the original ZnIn 2 S 4 (∼25.27 μmol/h), and the PHP performance (∼122.82 μmol/L/h) is 39.37 times than that of PBN (∼3.12 μmol/L/h). The excellent photocatalytic performance of PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 can be attributed to the following points: (1) the acceleration of the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs induced by the formation of Z-scheme heterostructure; (2) reasonable design and construction of sandwich-like PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterostructure; (3) the promotion the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers by the built-in electric field. This work provides new ideas for the development of high-efficiency PHE and PHP Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst design.

Dielectric capacitors are widely used in electrical engineering due to their excellent insulation, high safety, and high power density. However, under high-temperature conditions, injected electric charges from metal electrodes, along with thermally generated charges, lead to a rapid increase in leakage current and severe degradation of insulation performance in polymer capacitive films, limiting long-term and stable operation. To address this issue, core–shell structured BN@MgO inorganic fillers were prepared using the magnetron sputtering method, with MgO as the core and BN as the shell. Results demonstrate that BN@MgO fillers significantly reduce conduction loss in poly(ether imide) (PEI) films by forming charge traps at interfacial regions between the fillers and the PEI matrix. The built-in electric field between BN and MgO efficiently captures mobile charges, enhancing the electrical insulation properties at elevated temperatures. Optimizing the doping content and BN shell thickness leads to a discharge energy density of 3.9 J/cm3 at 150 °C, with a charge/discharge efficiency of 90% for PEI/BN@MgO-1.5(2.5h) composite films. Additionally, excellent cyclic reliability and performance are maintained after 50,000 charge/discharge cycles. The study presents an efficient method for constructing core–shell BN@MgO fillers and clarifies mechanisms for restricting charge mobility.

Aqueous Zn–I 2 batteries have garnered significant attention due to their high abundance and safety. However, the sluggish iodine redox kinetics and undesirable shuttle effect severely hindered their wider application. Herein, dual doping of B and N provides an effective strategy to modulates chemical properties and electron distributions of carbon hosts, resulting in high performance of Zn–I 2 batteries. The local electron redistribution enhances electron density at the Fermi level of the carbon host, thereby improving intrinsic conductivity. Additionally, combining experiments and DFT calculations reveal that N B center sites are benefited in suppressing shuttle effects, strengthened interactions with iodide species, and facilitated catalytic conversion kinetics. Notably, Zn–I 2 batteries fabricated with B and N co-doped porous carbon (BNAC) achieve an outstanding capacity (231.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ) and excellent cycling stability (capacitance retention of 98 % after 4,500 cycles). This study not only provides valuable insights into the design of advanced carbon materials but also clarifies the active sites in B/N co-doped carbon materials, offering guidance for the rational design of carbon-based electrode materials for Zn–I 2 batteries.

Oil/water emulsion separation in harsh environments remains a big challenge. Herein, a double layered nanofibrous composite membrane was developed by assembly of polydopamine-modified hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN-PDA) onto a poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) nanofibrous mat. Owing to the synergistic effect of a h-BN-PDA skin layer and a PEN nanofibrous mat supporting layer, as-prepared composite membrane exhibited high thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic property. Consequently, the PEN composite membrane showed good antifouling performance and a high rejection ratio (>99.0%) for various oil/water emulsions. After 10 cycles, the separation flux of PEN composite membrane still reached 588.1 L/m 2 h under the operating pressure of 0.04 MPa. Furthermore, the PEN composite membrane could still achieve high separation efficiency and high flux in high-temperature (65 °C) and strongly corrosive conditions (pH = 1-13). Therefore, the stable and efficient h-BN-PDA/PEN composite membrane showed potential application for treating oily wastewater in harsh environments.

Two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has attracted great interest due to its excellent chemical and thermal stability, electrical insulating property, high proton conductivity, and good flexibility. Integration of 2D h-BN into commercial proton exchange membranes (PEMs) has the potential to improve ion selectivity while maintaining the proton conductivity of PEMs simultaneously, which has been a longstanding challenge in membrane separation technology. Until now, such attempts are only limited in mechanically exfoliated small area h-BN and in proof-of-concept devices, due to the difficulty of growing and transferring large area uniform h-BN monolayers. Here, we develop a space-confined chemical vapor deposition approach and achieve the growth of wafer-scale uniform h-BN monolayer films on Cu rolls. We further develop a Nafion functional layer assisted transfer method which effectively transfers as-grown h-BN monolayer films from the Cu roll to sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane. The as-fabricated Nafion/h-BN/SPEEK sandwich structure is used as the membrane and compared with the pure SPEEK membrane for flow batteries. Results show that the sandwich membrane exhibits ion selectivity 3-fold greater than that of a pure SPEEK membrane (i.e., 32.1 × 104vs 9.7 × 104 S min cm–3). In addition, we fabricate vanadium flow batteries using the Nafion/h-BN/SPEEK sandwich membrane and find that the sandwich structure does not affect the proton transport but inhibits vanadium crossover at low current density (<120 mA cm–2) due to the selective blocking of vanadium ions by 2D h-BN. As a result, the sandwich membrane exhibits a significantly improved Coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency, ∼95% and ∼91%, respectively. Our results suggest that a functional layer/2D film/target substrate-based sandwich structure shows clear potential for future 2D material-based membranes in separation technologies.

Polyimide (PI)-based tribological composites containing carbon fiber (CF), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and other solid lubricants have been extensively studied. However, the role of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in regulating interfacial interactions and wear mechanisms in PI/CF/MoS 2 systems remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the effects of h-BN incorporation on the mechanical and tribological behaviors of PI/CF/MoS 2 composites were systematically investigated through experimental characterization combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results revealed that h-BN addition improved hardness while reducing tensile strength and ductility due to the enhanced interfacial restriction and increased stress concentration. The tribological performance exhibited a non-monotonic dependence on h-BN content, with the optimal performance achieved at 5 wt.% h-BN. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses suggested that an appropriate h-BN content facilitated the formation of a relatively continuous transfer film, whereas excessive h-BN promoted filler agglomeration and interfacial degradation, leading to accelerated wear. Furthermore, MD simulations suggested that the reduced molecular mobility and fractional free volume at the optimal h-BN content were consistent with enhanced interfacial stability. The combined experimental and simulation results provide qualitative insights into the role of h-BN in regulating filler dispersion, interfacial interactions, and molecular chain dynamics. These findings establish a structure–property relationship for designing high-performance multi-filler PI-based tribological composites. Highlights Hexagonal boron nitride improves the hardness but reduces tensile strength. Friction and wear are minimized at 5 wt.% hexagonal boron nitride loading. Excess hexagonal boron nitride triggers agglomeration and abrasive wear. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate experimental wear mechanisms.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites possess outstanding specific stiffness and strength but typically exhibit low intrinsic damping, which limits vibration attenuation in lightweight dynamic structures. Herein, a hybrid toughening strategy combining carboxyl-terminated butadiene nitrile rubber (CTBN) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is developed to enhance the damping of CFRP laminates while preserving cure feasibility and thermomechanical stability. An E51/DICY/accelerator epoxy system (100:6.5:1.2, mass ratio) is used as the baseline matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that both CTBN and h-BN shift the cure peak temperature upward (Tp: 160.6 → 170.3 °C) and reduce the reaction enthalpy (ΔH:386.5 → 255.1 J/g), indicating dilution/transport effects and altered cure kinetics. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals that CTBN exhibits an optimum damping enhancement at 25 phr (tan δ_max= 0.300), whereas h-BN provides a stronger monotonic increase up to 25 phr (tan δ_max= 0.437). Notably, the CTBN/h-BN hybrid (25/25 phr) delivers a hightan δ_maxof 0.468 together with the broadest effective damping window (ΔT_half= 28.6 °C), exceeding 85% of the linear additivity criterion proposed herein. When the materials are transferred into CFRP laminates, free-vibration tests (using the logarithmic decrement method) demonstrate a clear structural damping improvement (ζ:0.021 → 0.035;δ:0.132 → 0.221; t1/2: 0.48 → 0.27 s). Overall, the results suggest that the damping enhancement arises from a combination of EPBN-mediated ductile energy dissipation and h-BN-related interfacial/interlayer frictional losses, which can be jointly tuned to balance processability, thermal response, and damping performance in CFRPs.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an important thermal interface materials in electronic packaging industry with the aid of incorporating thermal conductive fillers. However, the thermal conductivity of PDMS composites is easily affected by outside thermal aging or force field. Herein, hybrid fillers containing boron nitride (BN) and silicon carbide (SiC) or silicon carbide nanowires (SiCNW) were used to construct stable thermal conductive pathways in PDMS matrix under cyclic compression or thermal-oxidative aging conditions. The optimum weight ratio of BN to SiC or SiCNW is 9:1 to obtain high thermal conductivity in PDMS. The thermal conductivity of BN 9 /SiC 1 /PDMS and BN 9 /SiCNW 1 /PDMS composites are slightly decreased by 4.50 and 4.20%, respectively after 64 h of thermal-oxidative aging when the mass ratio of BN to SiC or SiCNW is 9:1. Higher load bearing capacity of BN 9 /SiCNW 1 /PDMS composite can guarantee the good stability of thermal conductivity under cyclic compression. The thermal conductivity of BN 9 /SiCNW 1 /PDMS composite material is increased from 0.96 to 1.12 W m −1 K −1 , with a growth rate of 16.60% after 30 cycles of 1000 N compression, while the thermal conductivity of the BN/PDMS composite is decreased under the same compression conditions. Mechanisms of the cyclic compression effect on the variation of structure and thermal conductivity were proposed. This indicates that BN and SiC hybrid filled polymer composites could maintain high thermal conductivity under thermal-oxidative aging or cyclic compression.
