High- k , UV curable polymer composites with low dielectric loss and high breakdown strength were prepared. Fluorosilane coupling agent (FAS-17) was adopted to modify the surface of BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles . Characterization results of UV-cured composites filled with BT@FAS-17 particles indicate that the dielectric loss is dramatically decreased and the breakdown strength is significantly improved, especially for the highly-loaded composites. The underlying mechanism of these performance improvements is further studied by temperature-dependent dielectric spectra, thermally stimulated depolarization current experiments as well as the first-principle simulation, which suggest that H-bonding and additional interfacial traps introduced by FAS-17 account for the enhanced dielectric properties . This work proposes a facile and efficient technique for the fabrication of photosensitive high- k composites with low dielectric loss and high breakdown strength, which is suitable for a variety of advanced applications such as energy storage, functionally graded dielectric materials and 3D-printing fabrication of dielectrics.

The introduction of ceramic fillers into a polymer matrix is an effective way to obtain dielectric nanocomposites with high energy storage density. However, the inorganic fillers are difficult to disperse evenly into the polymer matrix because of the poor compatibility, which stems from the large surface energy difference and the mismatch in dielectric constant between the fillers and polymer matrix. Polymer nanocomposites with high dielectric constant while maintaining high breakdown strength have great potential to achieve high energy storage density. In this work, poly(dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate) terminated with a thiol end group (PDFMA-SH) was synthesized via a two-step process including Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization and subsequent aminolysis reaction. The polymer was then grafted into the surface of BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles by a “thiol–ene” click reaction to reduce the surface energy of BT nanoparticles. A novel nanocomposite consisted of the core–shell structured PDFMA@BT hybrid nanoparticles and poly(vinylidene fluoride–chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF–CTFE)) matrix was prepared. The influence of the fluoropolymer shell on the dispersion of fillers, the compatibility between the fillers and polymer matrix, dielectric properties and breakdown strength were investigated systematically. The results indicate that the strong interfacial adhesion between the hybrid nanoparticles and P(VDF–CTFE) matrix makes the fillers uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix. Meanwhile, the excellent compatibility between the two components is favorable for enhancing the breakdown strength and suppressing dielectric loss, providing a condition to prepare dielectric materials with high energy storage density.

In this paper, a flexible capacitive pressure sensor with porous barium titanate (BaTiO 3 )/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MwCNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite layer as the dielectric layer was fabricated. The sensitivity, stability, response time and human compatibility of the sensor were fully studied. The results showed that a controllable porous microstructure dielectric layer was built successfully where hybrid BaTiO 3 and MwCNTs fillers with giant permittivity distributed homogeneously. The BaTiO 3 /MwCNTs/PDMS flexible capacitive pressure sensor possessed high sensitivity (~1.24 kPa −1 ) and good stability in the low pressure range (0 ~ 0.8 kPa). Moreover, a low detection limit (~7 Pa) and a fast response time (~200 ms) were obtained. Human compatibility test revealed that our flexible sensor could catch the response of human body swiftly so that it exhibited a bright application prospect in wearable electronics.

This study reports that a novel high-temperature poly (m-phenyleneisophthalamide) (PMIA) composite with enhanced dielectric constant and thermal conductivity was prepared by filling with BaTiO3 nanowires–carbon nanotubes (BTCNs) fillers. Due to effective functionalization of BaTiO3 nanowires (BTNWs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), the fabricated BTCNs fillers were homogeneously dispersed in PMIA matrix. The consequence displays that the dielectric constant of PMIA composite with 15 wt % BTNWs fillers increases to 27.6 at 103 Hz, which is about nine times higher than that of pure PMIA. Moreover, owing to the high thermal conductivity of MWCNTs, the thermal conductivity of PMIA with 15 wt% BTNWs fillers increases to 1.01 W/(mK). The enhanced thermal conductivity is beneficial for BTCNs/PMIA composite to dissipate the generated heat by dielectric loss. Considering these merits, this research would provide new methods and ideas for preparation of high-temperature dielectric polymer composites and reducing the internal thermal effect.

Currently, massive preparation of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) towards large-size and good structural integrity via ball milling remains a key challenge, limiting its extensive applications in thermal management and energy storage. Low-cost and recyclable BaTiO 3 nanoparticles with good piezoelectric effect can concurrently act as collision buffers and strong reductants to suppress the in-plane crystal structure damage and surface oxidation triggered by high-energy mechanical impact. Herein, an environmentally friendly, simple to operate and easy to realize industrial production method, referred to as BaTiO 3 -assisted ball milling (BTABM), is demonstrated to prepare high quality few-layered BNNSs with an average lateral size of 0.56 μm and a high yield of 91.2%. This milling process involves the synergetic effects of mechanical shear and mechanochemical peeling provided by deformed BaTiO 3 . The incorporation of the prepared BNNSs into the P(VDF-CTFE) matrix by BTABM effectively improved simultaneously the dielectric properties and breakdown strength of the ternary P(VDF-CTFE)/BaTiO 3 /BNNS nanocomposites as well as their thermal management capability, due to the formation of 3D BNNS networks. This novel method provides a guidance for not only scalable exfoliation of other layered 2D materials but also massive fabrication of polymeric nanocomposites applied in high-temperature energy storage devices.

The fabrication of barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics using additive manufacturing technology, especially digital light processing (DLP), has been gaining a growing interest for electrical applications. The particle size of the ceramic powders plays a key factor on the performance of sintered ceramic components. In this paper, BaTiO 3 ceramic components were fabricated by adopting different suspensions filled with the submicron powder particle size of 200 nm, 500 nm and 600 nm, respectively. Subsequently, the effects of particle size on the rheological properties and photopolymerization behaviors of the suspensions, as well as the density, grain size, piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the ceramic components, were investigated. The result indicated that the suspensions with the coarsest powder showed the lowest viscosity and the highest cure depth; when the grain size distributed in submicron range, the piezoelectric constant ( d 33 ) and relative permittivity ( ε r ) of sintered BaTiO 3 ceramic are direct positively correlated to the grain size. The value of ε r and d 33 were related with domain structure affected by grain size. This work can provide a potential valuable guidance for researchers in selecting suitable BaTiO 3 powders to obtain high-performance piezoelectric ceramic components when using the DLP process.

BACKGROUND The oxidation of 1,2-propanediol under alkaline conditions in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst can be tailored to the formation of lactic acid, an important commodity chemical. In the present study, BaTiO 3 supported bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles was fabricated by sol-immobilized method and investigated by different characterizations. The optimum operating parameters of 1,2-propanediol catalytic oxidation were explored via the combination of single factor experiment and response surface methodology. RESULTS The high lactic acid yield of 81.4% can be obtained under optimum operating conditions (106 °C, 1.1 MPa O 2 pressure, and NaOH/1,2-PDO molar ratio of 3.0). The results of single factor experiment indicated that selectivity to lactic acid decreased with prolonging the reaction time, but increasing the temperature, NaOH concentration and O 2 pressure appeared to decrease the lactic acid selectivity after an initial increase. Reaction kinetics indicated that the value of Ea was 39.2 kJ·mol −1 over AuPd/BaTiO 3 catalyst. After five runs, the AuPd/BaTiO 3 catalyst stills retained high activity. CONCLUSION The AuPd/BaTiO 3 catalyst exhibited a good catalytic activity for this selective oxidation while the coalescence of Au and Pd nanoparticles can enhance the selectivity to lactic acid. NaOH/1,2-PDO molar ratio imposed an extremely comparable impact on lactic acid yield. The mutual interactions between reaction temperature and NaOH/1,2-PDO molar ratio, as well as NaOH/1,2-PDO molar ratio and pressure, were of vital significance. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

We reported the preparation of new ternary n-BaTiO 3 /Ag/p-AgBr heterostructured photocatalysts and their promising photocatalytic application for the dye degradation. The ternary n-BaTiO 3 /Ag/p-AgBr heterostructured photocatalysts are constructed by coupling n-type BaTiO 3 and p-type AgBr particles onto Ag nanowires. Various methods including XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, PL spectroscopy, photocurrent response and EIS were used to characterize the as-prepared photocatalysts. The photodegradation performances of the photocatalysts were assessed by using RhB as the model pollutant and simulated sunlight as the light source. It is demonstrated that the n-BaTiO 3 /Ag/p-AgBr ternary composite photocatalysts exhibit excellent photodegradation performances superior to bare BaTiO 3 and AgBr particles. Particularly, the 20 %BTO/1.2 %Ag/AgBr composite can photocatalyze 99.3 % removal of RhB after 12 min photoreaction, and has a photodegradation activity which is about 3.1 times larger than that of bare AgBr particles. The underlying photodegradation mechanism of the ternary composite photocatalysts was investigated and discussed.

Flexible pressure sensors based on piezoelectric materials have been intensively investigated for their wide applications in wearable electronics. However, traditional films based on inorganic/organic composite piezoelectric materials face the bottleneck of defects and cracks or poor dispersion, which hinders the performance of pressure sensors. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) was introduced as a surface modification agent to modify barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO), which was then blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix in different ratios to form uniform and homogeneous PDA@BTO/PVDF composites. Afterwards, the flexible piezoelectric pressure sensor was fabricated by a facial solution-casting method. This PDA-modification strategy can improve the dispersion of BTO into PVDF matrix, as well as reduce the interface hole defects and cracks between the two components. As a result, the 17 wt% PDA@BTO/PVDF sensor exhibited a fast response of 61 ms and a remarkable piezoelectric output voltage of 9.3 V, which showed obvious improvement as compared to the pristine PVDF and BTO/PVDF composite counterparts. In addition, as an energy supplier, the sensor could produce a maximum power of 0.122 μW/cm 2 even with high load resistance of 70 MΩ. This pressure sensor was sensitive to various human motions, showing great potential in the applications of wearable electronics.

Two electrocatalysts Pt and RuO2 were directionally co-loaded on the nano-piezomaterial t-BaTiO3 by a two-step process: the alkali deposition–oxidation of RuO2 followed by the selective photo-reduction deposition of Pt. It was found that both Pt and RuO2 could considerably improve the piezo-degradation efficiency of t-BaTiO3 for pollutants. For the biorefractory pesticide tricyclazole, RuO2/t-BaTiO3/Pt possessed a piezo-degradation kinetic constant of 0.032 min−1. The rate constant was 3.11, 2.56 and 2.58 times that of t-BaTiO3, Pt/t-BaTiO3 and RuO2/t-BaTiO3, respectively. Moreover, the rate constant of RuO2/t-BaTiO3/Pt was greater than the sum (0.025 min−1) of the rate constants of two single-loaded materials, Pt/t-BaTiO3 and RuO2/t-BaTiO3. This indicates that co-loaded Pt and RuO2 in RuO2/t-BaTiO3/Pt have a synergistic enhancement effect on the piezo-degradation. By analyzing the kind and amount of the reactive oxygen species (˙OH, 1O2, ˙O2− and H2O2) from these nano-piezocatalytic systems, it was inferred that Pt acted as a cathodic- and anodic-like catalyst while RuO2 acted as an anodic-like catalyst. The mechanism of the synergistic catalysis for co-loaded Pt and RuO2 was similar to the principle of an electrolytic reactor, in which Pt and RuO2 were its two catalytic nano-electrodes and the power was from the piezo-potential of t-BaTiO3.

Core–shell structured PbZrO 3 @BaTiO 3 nanoparticles (PZ@BT) were prepared through a modified hydrothermal method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The SEM, TEM images and TEM energy dispersive spectrometer mapping demonstrate that the PZ shell successfully forms on the BT core and the thickness of the PZ shell is approximate at 20 nm. The XRD pattern demonstrates the characteristic diffraction of the PZ shell, and the XPS result also indicates the presence of lead and zirconium, which confirm the fabrication of PZ@BT. Afterwards, the PZ@BT and polyarylene ether nitrile nanocomposites (PZ@BT/PENs) were prepared, and the mechanical, thermal, and their dielectric properties were systematically investigated. With the presence of PZ@BT, the glass transition temperature of the composites is enhanced while their thermal resistance is reduced. The composites show excellent tensile strength even 50 wt.% of PZ@BT is used. After the addition of PZ@BT, the permittivity of the composites is effectively improved. Dielectric loss of the composites shows a slight decrease when the content of PZ@BT increases. Furthermore, the composite with 5 wt.% of PZ@BT shows a breakdown strength of 215 kV/mm.

Polymer based composites with high dielectric constant were successfully fabricated using BaTiO3 nanowires with high aspect ratio as inorganic filler and PVDF-HFP as polymer matrix. PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanoparticles composites were also prepared as a contrast. The BaTiO3 nanowires were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method. The BaTiO3 nanowires and its two types of composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. For the composites, breakdown strength measurements, tensile tests and broadband dielectric spectroscopy analyses were also carried out. The results show that the two types of fillers are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix. The dielectric constant of composites filled by BaTiO3 nanowires is larger than that filled by BaTiO3 nanoparticles at the same content. Stronger interfacial polarization was found in PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites. Two theoretical models were employed to predict the dielectric constants of composites, and the experimental data were consistent with the estimated trend. The enhanced dielectric properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites are attributed to the superior interfacial polarization and high aspect ratio of BaTiO3 nanowires.
