Designing heterojunction photocatalysts with staggered band structures and optimal interfacial interactions constitutes a feasible strategy to achieve superior photocatalytic performance. Herein, we synthesized a Pt@BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction via in-situ construction and photochemical deposition. Notably, Platinum nanoparticles (NPs), precisely deposited via photochemical reduction, extend light absorption into the visible-NIR spectrum through localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) while acting as electron mediators to suppress recombination. Under simulated solar irradiation, the optimized Pt@BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction demonstrates complete degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) within 10 min. Additionally, the photocatalyst showed exceptional degradation efficiency for organic dyes including methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB). More importantly, the synergistic interplay between internal electric field (IEF) and the SPR of Pt nanoparticles collectively facilitates rapid charge separation while suppressing electron-hole recombination. This study offers a path toward highly effective photocatalysts engineered for practical applications and elucidates the activity enhancement mechanism through Pt incorporation in ternary heterojunction systems.

Insertion host materials are considered as a candidate to replace metallic Zn anode. However, the high mass loading anode with good electrochemical performances is reported rarely. Herein, a few-atomic-layered Co-doped BiOBr nanosheet (Co-UTBiOBr) is prepared via one-step hydrothermal method and a free-standing flexible electrode consisting of Co-UTBiOBr and CNTs is designed. Ultrathin nanosheet (3 atomic layers) and CNTs accelerate Zn 2+ and electron transfer respectively. The Co-doping is conducive to the reduced Zn 2+ diffusion barrier, the improved volume expansion after Zn 2+ intercalation, and the enhanced electronic conductivity of BiOBr, verified by experimental and theoretical studies. An insertion-conversion mechanism is proposed according to ex situ characterizations. Benefiting from many advantages, Co-UTBiOBr displays a high capacity of 150 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and a long-term cyclic life with ≈100% capacity attention over 3000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Remarkably, excellent electrochemical performances are maintained even at an ultrahigh mass loading of 15 mg cm −2 . Co-UTBiOBr//MnO 2 “rocking chair” zinc-ion battery exhibits a stable capacity of ≈130 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 during cyclic test and its flexible quasi-solid-state battery shows outstanding stability under various bending states. This work provides a new idea for designing high mass loading anode.

The utilization of nuclear energy generates a substantial volume of wastewater containing uranium, posing a significant threat to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. The current photocatalytic materials utilized for uranium extraction commonly exhibit insufficient redox capabilities, inefficient separation of photogenerated carriers, and challenging recovery. Therefore, recyclable TiO 2 /SrTiO 3 /BiOBr (TSB) dual Z-scheme heterojunction fiber membrane materials with dual oxidation sites were successfully synthesized, with advantages of rapid carrier separation and transfer and a broad photo-response range of the dual Z-scheme heterojunctions. Due to the presence of dual oxidation sites, TSB exhibited an exceptional uranium extraction performance, achieving a remarkable 98.9 % extraction rate without the need for sacrificial agents, which was 2.48, 1.79, and 3.34 times of those of ordinary TiO 2 , SrTiO 3 , and BiOBr, respectively. The extraction rate of uranium from TSB was 85 % after five cycles. Optical and photoelectric tests revealed that TSB reduced the bandgap width by 0.25 eV compared to that of TiO 2 , enhanced the fluorescence lifetime by 1.3 ns, lowered the electrical resistance, and higher optical current density, confirming the effective charge transport at the catalyst interfaces. The charge transfer routes in the TSB dual Z-scheme were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory. The potent oxidizing ·OH generated by TSB played a crucial role in facilitating the conversion of U(VI) into insoluble (UO 2 )O 2 ·2H 2 O. In conclusion, this work provides a novel strategy for the design of dual Z-scheme heterojunctions and offers a new method for practical and recoverable uranium extraction.

Photocatalytic CO₂ reduction to produce high-value-added chemicals is a promising strategy, however, fabricating highly efficient and economical catalysts is a critical challenge. Herein, an in-situ metal Bi engineering strategy during the construction process of double‑bismuth-based S-scheme heterojunctions is developed via a straightforward solvothermal approach. The as-prepared Bi/BiOBr/Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterojunctions exhibit abundant enriched oxygen vacancies (OVs) and a pronounced Bi surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect due to a high dispersion of the in-situ formation process, achieving excellent photocatalytic performance of CO 2 -to-CO conversion. Surprisingly, the photocatalytic activity of CO 2 -to-CO over Bi/BiOBr/Bi 2 MoO 6 is up to 71.91 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , with a high selectivity of 97.04 %. This represents enhancements of 141- and 1.63-fold compared to pure Bi 2 MoO 6 and Bi/BiOBr, respectively. The outstanding photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance can be ascribed to the synergistic enhancement effects of S-scheme heterostructures, the pronounced Bi SPR effect, and the enriched OVs engineering. Theoretical calculations and in situ spectroscopy analyses unveil that the mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic CO 2 reduction achieved through in-situ metallic Bi and OVs engineering on the S-scheme heterojunction. This meticulous catalyst design provides insights into a novel strategy for the efficient and precise customization of unique S-scheme Bi-based photocatalyst with enriched OVs and Bi SPR effects, opening new avenues for practical photocatalysis applications.

Layered BiOBr is promising for environmental catalysis but suffers from limited visible-light utilization and rapid charge-carrier recombination. Here, a nested-crucible melamine-assisted thermal activation strategy was developed to regulate the defect and phase structure of BiOBr-based materials while avoiding direct contact between melamine and BiOBr. The melamine-derived atmosphere introduced defect-related states, including possible oxygen-vacancy-related species, and induced minor bromine-deficient phase evolution. These changes enhanced light absorption, charge-separation behavior, and local piezoelectric response, whereas excessive melamine caused severe debromination and Bi 2 O 3 formation. The optimized M-BOB-5 achieved an H 2 O 2 yield of 1772.6 μmol g −1 within 120 min under piezo-photocatalytic conditions, which was 1.8 and 6.9 times those obtained under piezocatalysis and photocatalysis alone, respectively, together with nearly 99% TCH removal within 60 min. The improved performance may originate from defect- and phase-related electronic modulation combined with ultrasound-induced piezoelectric polarization, which facilitates charge separation, O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 , and pollutant oxidation. This study provides a practical melamine-assisted thermal strategy for regulating the defect and phase structures of BiOBr-based piezo-photocatalytic materials.

Building Z-scheme heterostructure integrating oxygen vacancies seems to effectively encourage photoexcited charge partition and hence photoelectric response and photocatalytic performance. Here, through the inclusion of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with W 18 O 49 /BiOBr (WB) for enhancing electron exchange and band structure control, we have developed one Z-scheme ternary CQD/W 18 O 49 /BiOBr heterostructures (CWB) with intense oxygen vacancies. The optimal CWB heterostructure shows superior photocatalytic and photoelectric response execution. The findings indicate that CWB has higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) at 97 % compared to WB or W 18 O 49 alone. Additionally, the CWB shows a higher photocurrent density, surpassing WB and W 18 O 49 by 2.5 times and 5.4 times. A potential self-supplied photoelectrochemical-type photodetector utilizing CWB displays relatively quick and stable photoelectric response at 0 V. The improved photo-electric performance are linked to the combined impact of separation and redistribution of charges caused by Z-scheme heterostructure and oxygen vacancies, as well as intensive light absorbance by localized surface plasmon resonance. Our research also validates significance of CQDs as cocatalyst in accelerating the splitting of photo carriers in Z-scheme ternary CWB heterostructures, which will stimulate interest in creating advanced photoactive heterojunction substance with carbon nanomaterials.

Photocatalysis can be a potential technique for decomposing antibiotics contaminants from water. In this study, g-C 3 N 4 modified Bi/BiOBr nanosphere were prepared by a simple microwave solvothermal method, and the structure-properties relationships of the Z-scheme heterojunction were evaluated in degrading organic dyes. Various characterization techniques were then applied to elucidate the structure-performance relationships of the resulting heterojunction photocatalysts in degrading CIP. Compared with pristine g-C 3 N 4 or Bi/BiOBr, the g-C 3 N 4 @Bi/BiOBr nanocomposites showed heightened property in photocatalytic degradation of CIP. The photocatalytic efficiency of CIP decomposition over the Z-scheme of g-C 3 N 4 @Bi/BiOBr heterojunction was about 2.38 and 1.35 times homologous to those of original g-C 3 N 4 and Bi/BiOBr. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 @Bi/BiOBr could be described by the Z-scheme pathway and the SPR effect of Bi 0 , which broadened visible light absorption and promoted the separation of photoinduced carriers. In addition, the effect of typical water matrix factors, such as pH, anionic, and cationic on photodegradation rate were evaluated. Furthermore, results of scavenging experiments showed that ·OH, ·O 2 − , and h + all participate in the degradation of CIP. Based on the band structure and scavenging measurements, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for the as-synthesized g-C 3 N 4 @Bi/BiOBr composites was proposed.

5-Formyluracil (5fU) is considered an important epigenetic modification agent involved in gene regulation, cell differentiation, and development. 5fU exists in many cells and tissues but is highly similar to the structure of 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and is less abundant in genome. Therefore, the development of a rapid, sensitive, and highly selective method to detect 5fU is desired. In this study, a photoelectrochemical biosensor based on WS2/Bi/BiOBr nanocomposites, black TiO2 (b-TiO2), and hemin/G-quadruplex was described, which was found to be highly sensitive and selective for 5-formyluracil-2′-deoxyuridine-5′-triphosphate (5fdUTP) detection. WS2/Bi/BiOBr was first employed as a photosensitive material, and 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) was adopted as a 5fdUTP recognition and capture reagent, where DABA was captured by polyethylene polyamine through covalent reaction to form a stable amid bond. Then, a benzimidazole bond was formed between DABA and −CHO of 5fdUTP, and 5fdUTP was selectively captured on the electrode. Using b-TiO2 as a cross-linker, a guanine-rich ssDNA sequence was further immobilized on the electrode surface by covalent reaction with the 5fdUTP phosphate group. With the assistance of K+ and hemin, the hemin/G-quadruplex structure was formed on the electrode. The hemin molecules in the structure of hemin/G-quadruplex obviously enhanced the PEC response of the biosensor for detecting 5fdUTP, with a linear range of 0.005–500 nM and a detection limit of 1.53 pM (S/N = 3). In addition, this method exhibits optimistic selectivity. The precision and accuracy of this method were evaluated by studying the content of 5fdUTP in genome DNA of crop tissues with standard addition recovery experiments.

Graphical FeOOH/BiOBr composite photo-Fenton catalyst was prepared by simple precipitation and impregnation method, in which 1.8 % FeOOH/BiOBr had the highest photo-Fenton catalytic activity. The quantum size of FeOOH is beneficial to increase the number of active sites and improve the electron mobility between composites. FeOOH quantum dots (QDs) were successfully anchored on 2D BiOBr nanosheets as composite photo-Fenton catalysts by a simple precipitation and impregnation method. Using Rhodamine B (RhB) as an organic dye model, the photo-Fenton catalytic activity of the composite catalyst was significantly higher than that of BiOBr and FeOOH. Among them, 1.8 % FeOOH/BiOBr has the highest photo-Fenton catalytic activity. The main reason is that the interface effect between FeOOH and BiOBr can enable photogenerated electrons to rapidly transfer from the surface of BiOBr to FeOOH to participate in the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle. Meanwhile, the quantum size of FeOOH increases the density of active sites on the surface of the composite catalyst. The influence of external factors on the catalytic activity of the catalyst was also verified. Finally, the electron transfer direction and main active species (h + , ⋅O 2 − ) of the composite catalyst were discussed by electrochemical analysis and radical trapping experiments, and a reasonable catalytic degradation mechanism was proposed.

Constructed heterojunction has been considered an efficient strategy to enhance the migration and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. Herein, a Z-scheme Cu 2 O/BiOBr heterojunction with 0D/2D structure was fabricated by microwave hydrothermal method. It was found that the optimal composites photocatalyst showed excellent activity for sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) illumination, and the removal rate reached 90.7%, which was higher than pristine Cu 2 O (53.0%) and BiOBr (60.0%). Subsequently, the operational parameters such as catalyst dosage, concentrations of pollutants, and pH of solution were investigated. According to the ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRs), Mott-Schottky curve, and density functional theory (DFT) analysis, the Z-scheme degradation mechanism of Cu 2 O/BiOBr heterostructure was proposed. Among them, the interface structure of 0-dimensions/2-dimensions (0D/2D) can significantly increase the number of heterojunctions in the composite catalyst, and Z-scheme heterostructures can accelerate the generation and migration of photoinduced charge carriers, which has a facilitation effect on improving the decomposition activity of the photocatalyst. Moreover, three possible pathways for SMZ degradation were inferred. This study provides a promising strategy for constructing novel heterojunctions with high photocatalytic performance.

Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is a widely used technology. Constructing oxygen vacancies , compounding other materials, and adjusting semiconductor morphology are effective ways to promote the performance of photocatalysis . In this study, ultrathin NCDs/BiOBr nanosheets with excellent photocatalytic ability were prepared. The triple role of NCDs in NCDs/BiOBr synthesis was revealed: controlling the thickness of the nanosheets , increasing the oxygen vacancy concentration, and regulating the band gap structure. Rhodamine B and tetracycline were degraded by the samples in visible light to examine their photocatalytic properties. The samples with the highest electron transfer efficiency were verified by optical and electrochemical characterization. As-synthesized NCDs/BiOBr catalysts exhibited good degradation in different water samples, indicating the ability of the samples for practical applications. In addition, the intermediates and possible degradation pathways of the prepared catalysts for the degradation of TC processes were also analyzed in depth. The electron transfer pathway and photocatalytic mechanism of NCDs/BiOBr were proposed in combination with free radical detection and energy band calculation.

Zearalenone (ZEN), a secondary metabolite mycotoxin primarily synthesized by Fusarium species and prevalent in cereal grains, exerts estrogenic effects that could induce reproductive toxicity and teratogenic outcomes. To enhance the precision of ZEN detection, we have developed an innovative photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer-based sensor employing in situ growth silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) quantum dots-sensitized graphitic carbon nitride/bismuth oxybromide (g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr) heterojunction. The g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr composite exhibits robust structural stability and straightforward synthesis. In situ growth Ag 2 S quantum dots could significantly amplify the signal, thereby elevating the sensor’s sensitivity. The sensor utilizes ZEN-specific aptamers for target-specific binding, ensuring high selectivity. Within the concentration range of 0.001 to 100 ng·mL −1 , the photocurrent response demonstrated a significant linear correlation with the logarithmic scale of ZEN concentration, with a detection limit reaching 0.122 pg·mL −1 . This PEC aptamer sensor exhibits excellent stability, reproducibility, and selectivity, which is expected to be used as an effective analytical tool for ZEN detection in practical applications.
