Photocatalysis technology is considered as a most promising method to decompose organic pollutant since the inexhaustible solar energy and facile reaction condition. Herein, a series of flower-like Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalysts are successfully synthesized via hydrothermal and photochemical deposition method. All the samples are investigated and characterized by X-Ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and Photoluminescence to insight into the microstructures and optical properties. During the photocatalytic degradation of Methyl orange experiments, the optimized Ag/AgCl/BiOCl sample prepared by photoreduction with 40 min exhibits the excellent photocatalytic performance. Under visible-light irradiation for 60 min, degradation rate of Methyl orange reaches 97%, which is 9.7, 6.1 and 4.6 times higher than that of AgCl, Ag/BiOCl and BiOCl, respectively. The UV–vis diffuse reflectance and Photoluminescence spectra of the Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalyst verify that the enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to its extended absorption range to visible-light region and the efficient separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. In addition, the radical trapping experiment demonstrates that photogenerated hole and superoxide radicals play critical roles in the methyl orange degradation. The corresponding photocatalytic degradation mechanism is proposed that the excellent photocatalytic activity is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic Ag and heterojunction structure of Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalysts.

A superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh was successfully prepared through a facile one-step hydrothermal method, which exhibits outstanding mechanical stability against sandpaper friction and resistance to water erosion and corrosive liquids. Notably, it demonstrates excellent oil/water separation efficiency and photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation while preventing the adhesion of microorganisms to the coating surface, endowing anti-biofouling properties to the mesh. To achieve simultaneous separation of oil from water as well as degradation of soluble dye and bacteria pollutants in a single device, a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh was also prepared using surface modification with octadecanethiol. Subsequently, a dual-layer mesh (DLM) was obtained by overlaying the superhydrophilic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coating onto the superhydrophobic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coating. The resulting dual-layer mesh with its superwetting properties enables concurrent oil–water separation, photodegradation of organic contaminants and photocatalytic bactericidal activity within trapped sewage. Furthermore, this versatile BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh can serve as a template for fabricating other bismuth-containing micro/nanostructure coatings with remarkable wetting properties. It is anticipated that such a versatile BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh possessing superior superwetting properties, robust mechanical durability, excellent anti-biofouling properties and outstanding photocatalytic activity will find promising applications in complex oily sewage purification systems.

Metal oxides are promising alkaline battery electrodes with high theoretical capacity, but the low energy density and poor stability make them far away from actual application. Herein, single Bi-MOF derived ultrastable Bi2O3@C and BiOCl@C anodes are architected via a two-for-one manner. Specifically, optimal Bi2O3@C anode with hierarchical and porous structure delivers high specific capacity (278.3 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1) owing to the exposed electrochemical active sites, fast charge transfer, and efficient ion diffusion. More importantly, ultrahigh stability (110%, 5000 cycles) is achieved due to the in situ morphological self-optimization and oxygen vacancy creation. Similarly, BiOCl@C anode also displays remarkable capacity and ultralong cycling stability (94%, 15000 cycles) due to the conductive and protective carbon layer, abundant reactive centers, and ion transport channels. Moreover, the in situ phase transition of BiOCl to Bi2O2CO3 also contributes to the outstanding stability. Our work provides rational guidance for architecting high capacitive and ultrastable anodes for aqueous rechargeable alkaline battery.

The overuse of antibiotics has caused the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and even superbugs, which makes it imperative to develop promising antibiotic-free alternatives. Herein, a multimodal antibacterial nanoplatform of two dimensional/two dimensional (2D/2D) mesoporous Co 3 O 4 /BiOCl nanocomposite is constructed, which possesses the effect of “kill three birds with one stone”: (1) the use of mesoporous Co 3 O 4 can enlarge the surface area of the nanocomposite and promote the adsorption of bacteria; (2) Co 3 O 4 displays remarkable full-spectrum absorption and photo-induced self-heating effect, which can raise the temperature of Co 3 O 4 /BiOCl and help to kill bacteria; (3) the p-type Co 3 O 4 and n -type BiOCl form a p-n heterojunction, which promotes the separation of photoelectrons and holes, thus producing more reactive oxygen species (ROS) for killing bacteria. The synergism of mesoporous structure, photothermal effect and photocatalytic ROS makes the developed Co 3 O 4 /BiOCl a promising antibacterial material, which shows outstanding antibacterial activity with an inhibition rate of nearly 100 % against Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 8 min. This work provides inspiration for designing multimodal synergistic nanoplatform for antibacterial applications.

A novel Z-scheme 3D flower-like NH 2 -UIO-66/BiOCl composite was fabricated by a facile solvothermal method. The structural characterization results demonstrate that NH 2 -UIO-66 is embedded on the smooth surface of the flower-like BiOCl, forming a tight contact interface. As a visible light collector, NH 2 -UIO-66 expands the optical absorption range of BiOCl, which is confirmed by the UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). By combining UV-Vis DRS, Mott-Schottky (MS) plots and VB-XPS, a well-matched band structure between NH 2 -UIO-66 and BiOCl is obtained. Photoelectrochemical characterizations indicate that the synergistic effect between NH 2 -UIO-66 and BiOCl interfaces facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In the case of photocatalytic performance experiments, the removal efficiency of the prepared NU66/BOC composites for TC-HCl was higher than either NH 2 -UIO-66 or BiOCl under simulated solar irradiation. NU66/BOC-20 exhibited the best performance with K app value (0.01269 min −1 ), which is 84 and 3 times more than the pristine NH 2 -UIO-66 (0.00015 min −1 ) and BiOCl (0.00410 min −1 ), respectively. In addition, NU66/BOC-20 composite demonstrates remarkable stability with a TC-HCl removal rate of 83% in the third cycle. The radical quenching experiments indicate that the primary active species is superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) while holes (h + ) play a role to some extent. Based on the above experimental results and in-situ irradiated XPS , Z-scheme was proposed to explain the electron transfer pathway in the photocatalytic process.

Photocatalytic degradation is an eco-friendly method for decomposing tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), yet it faces challenges such as slow photogenerated carrier transfer, poor separation efficiency, and limited active sites. Semiconductor composites offer a promising solution to enhance catalytic efficiency. In this context, a novel 0D/2D BiOCl 0.7 I 0.3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 (BOCI-BMO) direct Z-scheme photocatalyst was synthesized via a solvothermal method, featuring 0D BiOCl 0.7 I 0.3 quantum dots anchored on 2D Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheet. The composite photocatalyst with an optimal BOCI to BMO mass ratio of 7:3 (50 mg), achieved over 94% removal of TC (10 ppm) in 40 minutes, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability and broad applicability. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm that the photogenerated carrier transport between semiconductors follows a Z-scheme mechanism, significantly enhancing carrier separation efficiency while preserving strong redox capabilities. Moreover, the unique 0D and 2D structures provide a large specific surface area, offering abundant active sites and reducing carrier transport distance, thereby boosting photocatalytic performance. This study provides theoretical and experimental insights for designing and synthesizing novel visible light-responsive photocatalysts.

In this work, the co-precipitation method was used to prepare Fe-doped BiOCl-modified materials for visible photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin in water by taking advantage of the property that the acidic nature of FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O dissolved in water can improve the surface structure of the materials. In order to improve the problems of BiOCl’s poor absorption of visible light and high compounding rate of electron-hole pairs, the transition atom Fe is introduced to add impurity energy levels in BiOCl, which effectively reduces the bandgap width of the material and promotes the photogenerated electron migration of the material, and it is calculated that after modification, the band gap of the material can be reduced to 2.79 eV, which is a decrease of 0.32 eV compared to the original BiOCl (3.11 eV). Fe acts as an electron trap to capture electrons in electron-hole pairs and slows down their complexation with holes, effectively enhancing the stability of carrier separation in the material. Through free radical quenching experiments and ESR assays, it is understood that superoxide radicals are one of the free radicals needed in that act in the reaction process, indicating that the efficient electron capture enables the electrons to better react with adsorbed oxygen to generate superoxide radicals, which enhances the oxidizing ability of the system. Meanwhile, the degradation ability of modified materials on ofloxacin has been studied. Compared to the original BiOCl, under the condition of adding 50 mg/100 mL, the degradation ability of modified materials on ofloxacin has significantly improved. After 100 min of light exposure, the degradation efficiency of OFL·(10 mg/L) increased from 26.10% to 88.02%.

We synthesized a CuBi2O4/BiOCl p–n heterojunction photocatalyst by a convenient one-pot hydrothermal method. And the morphology, crystal phase, element composition and optical properties of as-synthesized CuBi2O4/BiOCl were analyzed utilizing SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, XPS, UV-visible DRS, PL and EIS techniques. Under visible light, the CuBi2O4/BiOCl p–n heterojunction exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride, and when the CuBi2O4 content in the heterojunction is 20 wt%, the photocatalytic activity of the CuBi2O4/BiOCl heterojunction is the highest, which is 58.2 times and 4.1 times that of pristine CuBi2O4 and BiOCl, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction increased with the enhancement of visible light absorption and the effective separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs which is promoted by the built-in electric field. In addition, a radical trapping study showed that h+ and ˙O2− radicals were the main active species in the photocatalytic process. On this basis, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was discussed.

A sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is described that is based on the use of C 3 N 4 -BiOCl semiconductor on an ITO electrode. The photocurrent of the modified electrode was measured under visible light illumination. It increased in presence of L-cysteine due to rapid separation of the photoexcited electrons and holes. A sandwich-type immunoassay in a 96-well microtiter plate format used CuO nanoparticles as label for the secondary antibody. The Cu 2+ is released from the CuO in the sandwich complex by treatment with acid. The free Cu 2+ combined with both the cysteine and the electron receptors of C 3 N 4 and BiOCl. Under optimal conditions, this dual action immensely decreases the photocurrent of the PEC system, and the response is inversely proportional to the CEA concentrations from 0.1 pg mL −1 to 10 ng mL −1 at the working voltage of 0 V (vs. SCE). The detection limit is 0.1 pg mL −1 , and the method is exhibited satisfactory selective, repeatable and stable.
Schematic representation of an immunoassay based on cysteine-assisted C 3 N 4 -BiOCl photoelectrochemical platform. CuO nanoparticles were utilized as labels in immunocomplex to release Cu 2+ in acidic condition. Carcinoembryonic antigen in sample was detected sensitively by dual function of Cu 2+ with cysteine and C 3 N 4 -BiOCl semiconductor.

Although Z-scheme heterojunction composites have been widely studied in photocatalysis, in-depth investigation of oxygen vacancies (Ov) in the Z-scheme photocatalysts is still rare. Herein, an oxygen vacancies modified NU-1000/BiOCl-Ov composite with Z-scheme heterojunction was rationally designed and fabricated. The combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiment verified the presence of oxygen vacancies, meanwhile the Z-scheme charge transfer across the heterojunction interface was confirmed in detail by the in situ -XPS, Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) studies, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), EPR radical capture experiment, as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Importantly, compared to pristine NU-1000 and BiOCl, the optimized NU-1000/BiOCl-Ov composite displayed enhanced photocatalytic performance in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under visible light (λ ≥ 400 nm). Theoretical calculations reveal that the oxygen vacancies could induce electron redistribution, facilitating the activation of O 2 and TCH molecules, thereby promoting the photodegradation efficiency. Moreover, mechanism studies suggested that the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and Z-scheme heterojunction could facilitate the effective separation of photogenerated carriers. At last, the degradation routes of TCH were proposed and the toxicity of degradation intermediates was assessed. This work underlines the cooperative functions of oxygen vacancies and Z-scheme heterojunction towards improved photocatalytic performance, which offers new perspectives on the design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) composites for efficient photocatalysis.

The lower specific surface area and limited surface contact between BiOCl and TiO 2 in composite fabricated by hybridization of TiO 2 with BiOCl extremely hinder its catalytic performance. In this work, the area of interface contact between BiOCl and TiO 2 was increased through the mediation of SiO 2 , and a Bi-modified ternary 0D/2D/2D TiO 2 /BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with large specific surface area (= 237.83 m 2 g −1 ) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect was constructed in situ by ingeniously utilizing the reduction of carbon species generated during the calcination process. The results show that the COD removal rate of Bi/TBOC-10% for real liquor brewing wastewater (LBW) reaches 90.5% after 10 hours of visible light irradiation, which is 2.6 times and 2.1 times that of TiO 2 and Degussa P25, respectively. The COD removal rate of the composite was reduced only by 8.9% after five cycles of performance test (50 h). Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Transient Photocurrent Response (TPR), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and BET characterization suggest that its excellent photocatalytic activity should be attributed to the Z-scheme heterojunction that broadens the light absorption range while retains strong oxidation-reduction active sites, the SPR effect that facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers, and high specific surface area of the composite that provides more active sites for the photodegradation reaction.

Photocatalytic degradation has been developed as a promising strategy for environmental remediation. Black phosphorus (BP) has attracted much attention in the field of photocatalysis due to the adjustable bandgap and high carrier mobility. In this work, we constructed a flower-like BP nanosheet/P-doped BiOCl (BP/P-BiOCl) S-scheme heterostructure via a simple co-precipitation method. The physicochemical properties such as the crystallinity, morphology, chemical environment, and optical and electronic properties of the as-fabricated materials were analyzed by using different analytical techniques. SEM data indicated the successful formation of a flower-like structure of BP/P-BiOCl composites. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy data indicated the formation of P-doped BiOCl. X-Ray diffraction and high resolution-TEM data revealed the formation of a hierarchical BP/P-BiOCl heterostructure. The catalytic activity of the as-synthesized samples (15%-BP/P-BiOCl) was tested towards RhB degradation (96% of 20 ppm RhB solution) and Cr(VI) reduction (90% of 20 ppm Cr(VI) solution) under solar light illumination. We demonstrated the formation mechanism of a flower-like structure in which positively charged BPNs assembled with negatively charged P-BiOCl by electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, we revealed the S-scheme photocatalytic mechanism to prove the enhanced photocatalytic activity of BP/P-BiOCl composites. The photodegradation of phenol, radical species trapping experiments and charge transfer route test were performed to prove the formation of the S-scheme. This work provides a facile route for the construction of a flower-like S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst for efficient solar light photocatalytic performance.
