Enhancing the catalytic activity of BiVO4: A new insight on the design of high-efficiency piezo-photocatalyst

Ying Cheng,Yubo Zhang,Chen Wang,Tao Yu,Xuefei Lei,Rui Guo,Ye Tian,Junhua You,Hangzhou Zhang,Xiaoxue Wang

Photocatalysis is an ideal method for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (THC) in water, but it remains challenging, mainly due to the rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs in the catalyst. In this paper, BiVO 4 is prepared by in-situ piezoelectric assisted method (BVO-U) for the first time and applied to the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of THC. It is found that the two catalysts (BVO prepared by stirring assisted method and BVO-U) have similar structures and chemical states, but they exhibit different piezoelectric properties . It is worth mentioning that the degradation efficiency of BVO-U (90 %) is higher than that of BVO (83 %) under ultrasonic coupled light irradiation . In addition, the mechanism is revealed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which suggests that the dipole moment of BVO-U increased, promoting the separation of photo-generated carriers, thereby improving the catalytic activity . These findings highlight the great potential of in-situ piezoelectric-assisted synthesis of BVO in piezo-photocatalytic degradation and provide an idea for designing efficient catalysts in the future.

Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance of BiVO4 Photoanode by Integrating Electron-Rich Polyoxometalate into Metal–Organic Framework

Daqian Xiao,Guanrong Cheng,Houde She,Xiaoping Chen,Jingwei Huang,Lei Wang,Qizhao Wang

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoanodes face challenges such as rapid electron–hole recombination, slow water oxidation kinetics, and poor surface stability. To tackle these problems, this study incorporates a Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) anion, characterized by a high negative charge and the absence of precious metals, into the MIL-101(Cr)/BiVO4 composite photoanode. The POM anion effectively enhances charge separation and injection within the BiVO4 photoanode under minimal optimization conditions by separating photogenerated holes from the MIL-101 framework. The NiPOM/MIL-101(Cr)/BiVO4 photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.5 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), approximately 4 times higher than that of pristine BiVO4. Furthermore, the oxygen evolution reaction yield of the photoanode reaches 36.2 μmol after 90 min of reaction, with faradic efficiencies consistently exceeding 84%, indicating the predominant involvement of photogenerated charge carriers in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. At an applied potential of 1.23 V vs RHE, the applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) reaches 1.16%. The charge transfer mechanism of the photochemical process reveals that the uniform distribution of the NiPOM cocatalyst within the hydrophilic zeolite cage of MIL-101(Cr) promotes the formation of additional chemically active sites and facilitates electron transfer from its Ni site to the BiVO4 surface, significantly boosting photocurrent density. This mechanism effectively suppresses the dissolution of V5+ ions and enhances the oxidation stability during photoelectrochemical water decomposition. This work presents a novel strategy for designing POM-based molecular synergistic catalysts to enhance the efficiency and stability of PEC water splitting, thereby facilitating the efficient conversion of solar energy to clean hydrogen fuel.

Enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance of Er, Mn co-doped monoclinic BiVO4 for efficient organic pollutant degradation

Shan Huang,Jiajia Liu,Lingxin Kong,Mengmeng Wang,Yi Liu,Yi Fang,Qi Xiao

This study reports the synthesis of Er-doped, Mn-doped, and Er, Mn co-doped monoclinic BiVO4 photocatalysts via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Er6%Mn2%/BiVO4 exhibited a larger specific surface area, bigger pore volume, and smaller average pore size compared to pure BiVO4 and single-doped BiVO4. The co-doping of Er3+ and Mn2+ ions resulted in lattice distortion and crystal particle size reduction of BiVO4, and generated a new impurity level at the bottom of the conduction band, narrowing the band gap and widening the absorption edge of visible light, thus improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Photocatalytic experiments on rhodamine B showed that Er6%Mn2%/BiVO4 achieved a degradation efficiency of 97.8% under visible light irradiation (λ >420 nm) within 100 min, which is higher than those of BiVO4, Er6%/BiVO4, and Mn6%/BiVO4. The kinetic rate constant (0.0312 min−1) of Er6%Mn2%/BiVO4 was 1.3, 2.2, and 4.7 times higher than those of Er6%/BiVO4, Mn6%/BiVO4, and BiVO4, respectively. The study also identified ·O2− and h+ as the predominant active species involved in the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B and demonstrated the excellent stability of Er6%Mn2%/BiVO4 for five cycles of photodegradation experiment. This work highlights that Er6%Mn2%/BiVO4 has great potential as a candidate for treating organic pollutants in water.

Controllable synthesis of BiVO4 photocatalysts with distinct morphology toward different dyes degradation in the presence of peroxydisulfate

Tang Meng,Zheng Lijia,Ge Ming

BiVO 4 photocatalysts with distinct morphology were solvothermally prepared by regulating the pH of precursor solution. The physicochemical properties of BiVO 4 catalysts were characterized using XRD, SEM, EDS, FT-IR and UV-Vis DRS. With the assistance of peroxydisulfate (PDS), as-obtained BiVO 4 could effectively degrade the cationic dye rhodamine B (RhB) and the anionic dye methyl orange (MO) under visible-LED-light illumination. RhB degradation obeys the first-order kinetic, while MO degradation complies with the second-order kinetic. Short stick-like BiVO 4 (named as BiVO 4 -1) showed the best RhB degradation efficiency, and sheet-like BiVO 4 (named as BiVO 4 -9) had the highest MO degradation rate. The influence of some important operating factors (PDS dose, BiVO 4 dosage, temperature, inorganic anions and humic acid) on the degradation of RhB and MO were discussed. In the BiVO 4 -1/PDS/Vis system, the free radical pathway (O 2 •‒ , SO 4 •‒ , •OH) and the non-radical pathway ( 1 O 2 and h + ) acted together to realize the degradation of RhB; however, in the BiVO 4 -9/PDS/Vis system, MO degradation was mainly dominated by the non-radical oxidation pathway ( 1 O 2 and h + ).

Gradient-Tuned VO4 Vacancies in BiVO4 Photoanode for Boosting Bulk Hole Transport and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance

Hao Pei,Lingling Peng,Zhuo Jiang,Yuexing Zhang,Renjie Li,Tianyou Peng

Although bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) photoanode has been widely used, the solar-driven oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is constrained due to the substantial bulk recombination and poor mobility of charge carriers. Herein, a facile solvothermal post-treatment approach that employs N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) is developed to induce a VO 4 vacancy gradient from bulk to surface of BiVO 4 film, which not only improves the charge diffusion but also establishes an advantageous upward band gradient to promote the bulk hole transport. Under Air Mass 1.5 Global (AM1.5G) simulated solar illumination, the optimized BiVO 4 photoanode with a VO 4 vacancy gradient (denoted as B(VO) 1-δ ) exhibits excellent OER performance with a charge separation efficiency of 74.4% at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 30.7% at 445 nm, 1.2 and 1.4 times higher than that of the pristine BiVO 4 , respectively. After loading nickel-iron hydroxyl oxide (NiFeOOH) as a cocatalyst, the photocurrent density of B(VO) 1-δ escalates to 5.92 mA cm −2 in a hole scavenger (Na 2 SO 3 ) solution and 5.07 mA cm −2 in a potassium borate buffer solution at 1.23 V versus RHE, far superior to the pristine BiVO 4 . This work highlights that the gradient-tuned VO 4 vacancies can effectively modulate the bulk band structure and charge transfer in BiVO 4 photoanode, providing a new strategy for boosting solar water splitting performance.

In situ preparation of Mo: BiVO4 photoanodes coupled with BiOBr cathode for efficient photoelectrocatalytic CO2 reduction performance

Xiya Zhao,Zhiyu Li,Xiaochao Zhang,Xiushuai Guan,Changming Zhang,Puqian Tian,Huiqiang Yue,Liyuan Wang,Yadong Bai,Yawen Wang,Song Yang,Caimei Fan

Photo-anode-driven photoelectrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 is an ideal way for solving problems such as the greenhouse effect and environmental crisis. In this study, a one-step hydrothermal method was successfully used for the preparation of BiVO 4 films doped with different mass fractions of Mo. The results show that when Mo was doped at 1.5 wt%, photocurrent densities of up to 4.11 mA·cm -2 were obtained, 3.36 times greater than those of undoped BiVO 4 , and there was a marked cathodic shifting of water oxidation reaction initiation potential. Subsequently, coupling it with the BiOBr nanosheet cathode, the generated CH 3 OH rate reached 45.67 μmol·L -1 ·h -1 ·cm -2 at a low applied voltage of 1.2 V RHE , with a Faraday efficiency of 60.68% for photoelectrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. This work is important for Bi-based thin film self-assembly coupled with photoelectrocatalytic CO 2 systems. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Sunlight-driven degradation of Rhodamine B by peanut-shaped porous BiVO4 nanostructures in the H2O2-containing system

Ming Ge,Lu Liu,Wei Chen,Zhen Zhou

With Rhodamine B as a model compound, the photocatalytic oxidation of organic contaminants in aqueous solution was investigated within a cooperating porous BiVO4/H2O2 system under simulated sunlight irradiation. Peanut-shaped porous BiVO4 was prepared through a simple template-free solvothermal method with high yield, and was used in the cooperating catalyst/H2O2 system. The possible formation mechanism of peanut-shaped BiVO4 nanostructures was investigated. In the peanut-shaped BiVO4/H2O2 system, nearly complete degradation of Rhodamine B was observed after 60 min of irradiation under sunlight irradiation. The as-obtained porous BiVO4 photocatalyst displayed higher photocatalytic activity than those of the reference product hydrothermally synthesized and the photocatalyst P25 in the same catalyst/H2O2/sunlight system. The photocatalytic processes of the BiVO4/H2O2/sunlight system may consist of both OH˙ oxidation and direct hole attack. In addition, the peanut-shaped porous BiVO4 nanostructures were stable and maintained high photocatalytic efficiency during repeated recycles in the H2O2-containing system.

Synthesis of ZnPc/BiVO4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Under Visible Light Irradiation

Lulu Zhong,Liuyun Chen,Xinling Xie,Zuzeng Qin,Tongming Su

The construction of semiconductor heterojunctions is an effective strategy to improve the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of organic pollutants. Herein, ZnPc/BiVO4Z-scheme heterojunction was synthesized via a physical mixing method and was used for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. Compared with BiVO4and ZnPc, the 15ZnPc/BiVO4sample exhibited improved light absorption capacity, and the electron-hole separation efficiency and redox capacity were enhanced due to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction. The 15ZnPc/BiVO4composite exhibited an optimal TC degradation rate of 83.1% within 120 min. Additionally, 15ZnPc/BiVO4exhibited excellent stability in cycling experiments, which maintained a high TC degradation rate of 79.5% after four cycles. Free radical trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals (·O2−) were the main active substances in the photocatalytic degradation of TC.

Interfacial Engineering of BiVO4 Immobilized on Sodium Alginate Aerogels Enable Synergistic Photocatalytic-Peroxymonosulfate Degradation of Rhodamine B

Weidi Zhang,Tiantian Zhou,Jianhao Qiu

The practical application of powdered photocatalysts is significantly hindered by challenges in recyclability and structural instability. This work proposes a sustainable immobilization strategy by integrating BiVO4nanoparticles into a sodium alginate (SA) aerogel scaffold through a facile freeze-drying approach. The abundant hydroxyl/carboxyl groups of SA enable uniform dispersion of BiVO4within the porous network, while the aerogel architecture enhances light-harvesting efficiency and mass transfer kinetics. Innovatively, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was introduced to synergistically couple photocatalysis with sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), where the photogenerated electrons from BiVO4effectively activate PMS to yield high-activity ·SO4−radicals. The optimized BiVO4/SA aerogel achieves nearly complete removal of Rhodamine B within 2 h under visible light, which is competitive to pure BiVO4powders. In addition, the mechanically robust aerogel exhibits exceptional reusability, retaining ~90% efficiency after five cycles without structural collapse. This work provides a paradigm for designing recyclable photocatalyst carriers with dual oxidation pathways, demonstrating significant potential for industrial wastewater treatment.

Interface-Engineered Co@Co3O4@NC Nanoparticles on BiVO4 Photoanodes for Efficient Charge Transfer and Solar Water Oxidation

Kaixin Zhang,Zimu Li,Yeqiang Wang,Dajun Cui,Jiangxin Wang,Kuanhong Mei,Minmin Liu,Haoyang Dong,Yiman Zhang,Juan Zhang,Weiguo Xu,Shuo Li

The employment of Co-based cocatalysts in BiVO4 (BVO) photoanodes is still suffering from inefficient hole transfer to active sites and sluggish charge kinetic processes. To address this issue, we designed a hierarchical dual-shell Co@Co3O4@NC (Co-DS) cocatalyst synthesized via the controlled pyrolysis of CoCo Prussian blue analogs under micro-oxygen conditions. The designed hierarchical structure consists of a graphitic carbon shell that encases the Co3O4 interlayer, which is abundant in OER-active sites, coupled with a metallic Co core that enhances hole accumulation and charge transfer across interfaces. The optimized Mo-BVO/Co-DS photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.95 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, representing a 129% enhancement over pristine BVO (2.16 mA/cm2). This work provides fundamental insights into the design principles of metal-oxide-based cocatalysts for overcoming efficiency limitations in photochemical water oxidation.

Negative effects and mechanisms of phosphorus in electrolyte on the photoelectrochemical water splitting stability of BiVO4 photoanode

Xing Cao,Huanhui Chen,Ziqian Lu,Yubin Zhao,Shoujing Wei,Ya Liu,Junrong Zeng,Gaowei Zhang,Qing Ma,Liubiao Zhong,Lijuan Song,Yejun Qiu

The industrial development of BiVO 4 photoanode–based photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is constrained by the poor stability of the BiVO 4 photoanode. However, the effect of phosphorus (P) in commonly used electrolytes on BiVO 4 photoanode stability and the associated mechanism are still scarce. Herein, we investigate the effects of different P-containing electrolytes on the PEC performance of BiVO 4 , as well as the changes in the composition, microstructure, light-absorption properties, and carrier transport and separation efficiencies of BiVO 4 between before and after the reaction. Results demonstrate that at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (V RHE ), the photocurrent decay of BiVO 4 in all P-containing electrolytes after 24 h is >95 %. In acidic environments, H + and PO 4 3− convert BiVO 4 into BiPO 4 , with a larger band gap, resulting in decrease in PEC activity and stability. Under alkaline conditions, P deposits as a phosphorus oxide onto the BiVO 4 surface, resulting in severe carrier recombination and slower water oxidation kinetics. The 24-h photocurrent attenuation is alleviated to 33.5 % via a strategy involving low applied potential (0.8 V RHE ), introduction of labile V ions (NaVO 3 ), and deposition of a cocatalyst layer (NiOOH/FeOOH). This study emphasizes the effect of electrolyte composition on the PEC stability of BiVO 4 and provides a reference for the modification of BiVO 4 .

Synergistic effect of Fermi level regulation and oxygen defect engineering on enhancing photocatalytic degradation performance of BiVO4/BiOI

Tianyuan Xiao,Yong Li,Xiaoya Ding,Guangming Yin

In complex marine environments, the search for efficient antibacterial materials has become a research hotspot to combat marine biofouling. BiOI@BiVO 4 heterojunctions were fabricated by the hydrothermal processes for use in antibacterial field. BiOI@BiVO 4 heterojunction shows superior antibacterial performance to BiVO 4 , with >99.99 % Pseudomonas sp. killed in 4 h. Further photoelectrochemical experiments have shown the unique band structure greatly promotes the separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers and lowers the recombination rate of e − -h + , and thereby generates more highly oxidizing free radicals, achieving efficient sterilization. This research furnishes promising concepts and orientations for the evolution of high-efficiency antibacterial materials.
