Enhanced oil recovery through CO2 injection: The role of pentane in improving miscibility of CO2 and oil

Mingwei Zhao,Yuxin Xie,Xiangjuan Meng,Lin Li,Caili Dai,Zhihao Zhang,Zhenfeng Ma,Yingnan Wang,Zhongzheng Xu,Xuguang Song

Effectively reducing the miscible pressure of CO 2 -oil is a crucial measure to achieve CO 2 miscible flooding. Alkanes have been extensively studied to improve the miscibility of CO 2 and oil, but few studies have elucidated the potential mechanisms and principles of their effects. In this work, the effect of pentane as a typical alkane on the miscibility behavior between CO 2 and oil is clarified. The interfacial tension of CO 2 -oil was measured by the high temperature and high pressure interfacial tension tester. The minimum miscible pressure (MMP) was extrapolated by the vanishing interfacial tension method. Meanwhile, the physical parameters (solubility, density, etc.) of oil and CO 2 were measured by visual PVT instrument. Oil composition analysis and AFM morphological scanning explained the extraction effect of CO 2 on oil. Finally, pentane-enhanced CO 2 flooding recovery was evaluated by physical simulation device. Results indicated that introducing the pentane effectively reduces the interfacial tensions and MMP, achieving an impressive 10.42% MMP reduction. Moreover, the addition of pentane to CO 2 -oil significantly increases the solubility of CO 2 in oil and the volume expansion of oil. CO 2 primarily extracts oil components with carbon numbers below C 10 . As CO 2 enrichment progresses, the concentration of resin and asphaltene increases, proved by a more roughening of the surface deposition morphology. Pentane can improve the solubilization and extraction of oil by CO 2 , and increase the recovery of CO 2 flooding by 19.94 %. This study is expected to facilitate the efficient utilization of CO 2 miscible flooding and provide the theoretical and technical support for its practical implementation in oilfield.

A new approach to high conversion CO2 hydrate sequestration by CO2/water emulsion injection into marine sediments

Ming-Long Wang,Yi-Fei Sun,Hong-Nan Chen,Jin-Rong Zhong,Liang-Liang Ren,Ming Wang,Dan Rao,Yong-Quan Liu,Yi-Bo Hao,Bei Liu,Chang-Yu Sun,Guang-Jin Chen

Hydrate-based CO 2 storage is a highly promising technology for long-term stable CO 2 storage in sediments. However, the unclear displacement and hydration mechanisms, along with the low conversion rate of CO 2 hydrates, have hindered the field application. Here, we report a method of the injection of CO 2 /water emulsion to replace liquid CO 2 to regulate the ratio of CO 2 to water in the sediment pores and to enhance their contact ability, which can significantly improve the CO 2 hydrate conversion rate. Compared to liquid CO 2 injection, emulsion injection can flow through more sediment pores with an increase in displacement efficiency by 45 %-62 %, which leaves a CO 2 -to-water ratio within the pores that is more suitable for hydrate formation, ultimately tripling the hydrate conversion rate. We have outlined the hydrate growth mechanisms for both injection forms, where the micron-sized CO 2 droplets within the emulsion can greatly reduce the barrier effect of hydrate film. Under the combined influences, the CO 2 storage density in hydrates up to 91.2 kg/m 3 for CO 2 /water emulsion injection is 47.8 % higher than that of 61.7 kg/m 3 for liquid CO 2 injection. Our work provides a new approach to high conversion CO 2 hydrate sequestration in submarine sediments.

Rapid Absorption and Desorption of CO2 by Deep Eutectic Solvents via Reversible CO2-Triggered Proton Transfer Process

Yan Wang,Wanxiang Zhang,Shuhang Ren,Yucui Hou,Weize Wu

Due to low cost and high efficiency, amino-based functionalized deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely investigated in CO2 capture. The amino group reacted with CO2 in a quantized ratio of 2:1 to form a carbamate and quaternary ammonium cation, which not only limited the absorption capacity of the amino group but also led to a dramatic increase in viscosity. In this work, we proposed a new strategy to improve the absorption capacity of amino-based functionalized DESs and inhibit viscosity increase by changing the proton transfer site from –NH2 to –N═ to prevent the formation of –NH–COO– and –NH3+ using aromatic amines and ethylene glycol (EG). EG exhibited significant activation effect on 4-aminopyridine (AP). The absorption capacity of AP was enhanced from 0.10 mol of CO2/mol of DES to 0.60 mol of CO2/mol of DES at 303.15 K and 101.3 kPa after forming DES with EG. In addition, the saturated DES could be rapidly regenerated within 20 min at 353.15 K, and the absorption performance was maintained after six cycles. Results of proton nuclear magnetic resonance and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra revealed the formation of carbamate and the protonation of pyridine nitrogen. The new reaction path effectively reduced the increase in viscosity. The viscosity of AP/EG (1:3) DES increased slightly from 29.17 to 68.40 mPa·s after absorption.

CO2 capture from CO2/N2 mixed gas using synthesized binder-free zeolite X pellets by adsorption technology

Nan Li,Penny Xiao,Weijie Liu,Liying Liu,Zijian Wang,Jian Wang,Peng Gao,Qi Wu,Xinchao Ma,Gang Kevin Li

Compared with traditional commercial adsorbent zeolite pellets, binder-free molecular sieves can provide better adsorption performance. In this paper, we reported a novel method to synthesize binder-free zeolite X pellets (BF-Z), that is, zeolite X powder was intricately combined with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and then the sample was calcinated to form crystals, where HPMC was decomposed and HNTs was also completely converted into binder-free X zeolite. The synthesized BF-Z showed the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.98 mmol/g at 303 K and 1 bar, compared with commercial NaX zeolites produced by Jianlong, Sigma and UOP companies. Calculated by IAST model, the separation coefficient of CO 2 to N 2 (CO 2 /N 2  = 25/75) on BF-Z is 74 at 303 K and 1 bar. The great separation performance of CO 2 from N 2 (CO 2 /N 2  = 25/75) was also exhibited in breakthrough experiments and a designed VSA process. Compared with commercial NaX (UOP), in breakthrough experiment, BF-Z presented high CO 2 adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate; and in designed thirty six-step vacuum swing adsorption process (VSA), the six-bed VSA system using BF-Z as adsorbents demonstrated excellent separation performance such as high CO 2 purity and recovery, low energy consumption and enhanced CO 2 production capacity. The notable efficacy of BF-Z in CO 2 adsorption and separation underscores its promising utility in both commercial and industrial settings.

Synthesis of methanol over highly dispersed Cu–Fe based catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides

Jing Tian,Weixin Qian,Haitao Zhang,Hongfang Ma,Weiyong Ying

In this paper, catalysts with different aluminum contents were prepared by a co-precipitation method using LDHs (layered double hydroxides) as the precursors through the adjustment of Cu2+ : Fe2+, and the catalysts were named LDO catalysts. The effect of aluminum on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol was investigated by evaluating the characterization. With the addition of Al, Ar physisorption results showed an increase in BET-specific surface area, TEM demonstrated a decrease in catalyst particle diameter, XRD showed that Cu and Fe existed in the catalyst mainly in the form of CuFe2O4 and CuO, XPS demonstrated a decrease in electron cloud density and an increase in base sites and oxygen vacancies, and CO2-TPD and H2-TPD results indicated that Al promoted the dissociation and adsorption of CO2 and H2. When the reaction temperature was 230 °C, the pressure was 4 MPa, H2/CO2 = 2.5 and the space velocity was 2000 ml (h gcat)−1, the best conversion (14.87%) and the highest methanol selectivity (39.53%) of the catalyst were obtained at 30% aluminum content.

Dynamic activation catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation

Zhang Zhewei,Yao Jun,Shen Chenyang,Li Fengfeng,Deng Changshun,Zhao Taotao,Guo Xuefeng,Zhu Yan,Guo Xiangke,Xue Nianhua,Peng Luming,Ding Weiping

In typical heterogeneous catalytic reactions, catalysts, whether fixed or flowing, maintained their bulk and surface structures as stable as possible. We report here dynamic activation catalysts having continuously generate highly active sites in working, which enables a usually low active Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation, showing extraordinary catalytic performances. Using reaction streams in unusually high linear speed to blow and carry the Cu/Al 2 O 3 particulates to collide cyclically with a rigid target, the CO 2 conversion rate is more than three times enhanced at methanol selectivity promoted to 95% from less than 40% and the methanol space-time-yield is six times increased. By experimental and theoretical investigation, the dynamic activation of Cu/Al 2 O 3 is defined as a discrete condensed state with a distorted and elongated lattice, reduced coordination, and abnormal catalytic properties. We envision that continuous research on the dynamical activation catalysts will advance novel methods for promoting catalytic performance and discovering new catalytic reactions.

Structure-activity relationship for CO2 absorbent

Hongwei Li,Zhigang Tang,Zhimin He,Xia Gui,Longpeng Cui,Xian-zhong Mao

In order to show the structure-activity relationship for CO 2 absorbent, and identify or screen novel and efficient physical solvents of CO 2 , the constant-volume method, the Peng-Robinson equation of state , and a molecular simulation were used to investigate the impacts of type of functional groups, carbon chain length and number of functional groups for nine physical solvents. The three methods produced highly consistent results. Comparison of the CO 2 solubility in solvents with the same carbon numbers but different functional groups suggested that the ester group could promote CO 2 absorption. Investigation of the CO 2 solubility in solvents with one ester group but different carbon chain lengths revealed that longer carbon chains could enhance CO 2 absorption. Analyses of the CO 2 solubility of solvents with one and two ester groups demonstrated that more ester groups could further increase the CO 2 absorption. Therefore, the presence and number of ester groups and increased carbon chain length could promote CO 2 absorption. It provides direction and method for screening of highly efficient CO 2 absorbents and for the design and synthesis of new solvents.

Continuous decoupled redox electrochemical CO2 capture

Liu Tao,Wang Yunpeng,Wu Yifan,Jiang Wenchuan,Deng Yuchao,Li Qing,Lan Cheng,Zhao Zhiyu,Zhu Liangyu,Yang Dongsheng,Noël Timothy,Xie Heping

Electrochemical CO 2 capture driven by renewable electricity holds significant potential for efficient decarbonization. However, the widespread adoption of this approach is currently limited by issues such as instability, discontinuity, high energy demand, and challenges in scaling up. In this study, we propose a scalable strategy that addresses these limitations by transforming the conventional single-step electrochemical redox reaction into a stepwise electrochemical-chemical redox process. Specifically, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode and the oxidation of a redox carrier at the anode are employed to modulate the pH of the electrolyte, thereby facilitating effective CO 2 capture. By decoupling the electrochemical swing for CO 2 capture from redox carrier regeneration in both temporal and spatial domains, this approach mitigates unwanted side reactions and enhances system stability. Our results demonstrate a stable CO 2 capture process sustained for over 200 h, with a electrical work of 49.16 kJ e mol -1 CO 2 at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 . Furthermore, a scaled-up system capable of producing approximately 0.4 kg of pure CO 2 per day maintained stable operation for 72 h, highlighting the potential feasibility of this method for large-scale decarbonization applications.

Preparation of Li4SiO4 Sorbents for Carbon Dioxide Capture via a Spray-Drying Technique

Yingchao Hu,Wenqiang Liu,Zijian Zhou,Yuandong Yang

Various synthesis methods, such as the combustion method, sol–gel method, impregnated suspension, precipitation, etc., have been previously proposed for the production of efficient Li4SiO4 sorbents. During these methods, the mixture of the precursors of Li and Si were usually dried through the oven, water bath, or oil bath, which are all energy-consuming and slow processes. To produce Li4SiO4 sorbents quickly and efficiently, the spray-drying technique was employed in this work. The spray-dried sorbents exhibited both excellent CO2 capture capacity and cyclic stability during the multiple cycles, indicating that the spray-drying method was effective for the preparation of efficient and durable Li4SiO4 sorbents for high-temperature CO2 removal. Especially, the sorbent using lithium tartrate as the Li source achieved a considerable first-cycle CO2 sorption capacity of ∼0.275 g of CO2/g of sorbent and still held the capacity of ∼0.248 at the 50th sorption/desorption cycle under the realistically low CO2 concentration of 15 vol %. The excellent performance of the sorbent was demonstrated to be attributed to the corresponding small crystallite size of Li4SiO4, high surface area, large pore volume, and rich porosity.

Nanoporous ZIF-67 embedded polymers of intrinsic microporosity membranes with enhanced gas separation performance

Xingyu Wu,Wei Liu,Hong Wu,Xue Zong,Leixin Yang,Yingzhen Wu,Yanxiong Ren,Chengyou Shi,Shaofei Wang,Zhongyi Jiang

In this study, novel kinds of MMMs were fabricated by incorporating ZIF-67 nanoparticles into polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1). ZIF-67 (Co substituted ZIF-8) displays stiffer Co-N bond as compared with the Zn-N bond in ZIF-8, which might led to the slightly smaller effective pore aperture of ZIF-67. Good compatibility between ZIF-67 nanoparticles and PIM-1 matrix rendered ideal interfacial morphology. The intrinsic separation performance of ZIF-67 was estimated from our experimental separation results based on the Maxwell model. The calculation demonstrated its superior CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 45, which is twice compared with that of ZIF-8, supporting the high molecular sieving efficiency of PIM-1/ZIF-67 MMMs. Particularly, the CO 2 and H 2 permeability increased by 15.1% and 59.6% for PIM-1 membrane with 20   wt% ZIF-67 loading, meanwhile CO 2 /CH 4 and H 2 /CH 4 selectivity increased by 34.4% and 86.96%, respectively. The strategy of incorporating highly selective ZIFs into polymers of intrinsic microporosity may have promising potential in fabricating high performance membranes for efficient gas separation.

Impacts of Stirring Rate on CO2-in-H2O Emulsion Synthesis and Stability for Enhanced CO2 Hydrate Formation Kinetics

Liangliang Ren,Lixia Zhang,Tie Geng,Jiayu Sun,Xuejian Liu,Botao Xu,Huaike Li,Lei Guo,Zhenyuan Yin

With the global demand for carbon reduction, hydrate-based CO2 sequestration evolves as a promising technology for offshore CO2 storage. However, the slow kinetics of CO2 hydrate formation, primarily due to the limited contact area and mass-transfer resistance between immiscible liquid CO2 and the H2O phases under high pressures, remain a critical bottleneck for its practical application. To this end, we proposed a CO2-in-water (C/W) emulsion system by employing a nonionic surfactant, alkyl polyglucoside (APG), using simple high-speed stirring. We systematically examined how the degree of mixing, i.e., stirring rate, impacts the stability of the C/W emulsion and the subsequent CO2 hydrate formation kinetics. Using a full-visual reactor coupled with an in-house developed phase identification algorithm, C/W emulsification and demulsification kinetics were unveiled. C/W emulsion stability under various high stirring rates and APG concentrations was examined. We further demonstrate the superior CO2 gas uptake and rapid CO2 hydrate formation kinetics realized by the synthesized stable C/W emulsion. Our results suggest that increasing the stirring rate substantially speeds up the C/W emulsification synthesis process, achieving only 9 s at an optimal stirring rate of 1600 rpm and 3.00 wt% APG. The stability of C/W emulsion is further enhanced under high shearing rate, with complete demulsification time reaching 5 h. Furthermore, increasing the stirring rate from 800 to 1600 rpm not only improves the C/W emulsion stability but also results in shortened induction time, high CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, and high CO2 final uptake (maximum gas uptake 167.7 v/v with a water conversion of 84.5%). The experimental results provide direct evidence on how the stirring rate affects C/W emulsion preparation and stability. The findings also shed light on a promising emulsion-based method for effective CO2 hydrate formation kinetics promotion, which can be adopted in a series of CO2 hydrate-based applications.

Formulating liquid CO2-in-water emulsion using non-ionic surfactant alkyl polyglucoside for ultra-rapid CO2 hydrate formation

Liangliang Ren,Lixia Zhang,Tie Geng,Xuejian Liu,Jiayu Sun,Dnyaneshwar R. Bhawangirkar,Botao Xu,Huaike Li,Lei Guo,Zhenyuan Yin

Hydrate-based CO 2 storage (HBCS) in subsea sediments has emerged as a promising climate mitigation method due to its high CO 2 storage capacity and long-term stability. However, practical application encounters significant challenges due to sluggish CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics, primarily resulting from limited liquid CO 2 -water interfacial contact after CO 2 hydrate film formation and blockage. Generating CO 2 microdroplets in continuous aqueous phase forms CO 2 (L) in H 2 O (C/W) emulsion, which enhances CO 2 dispersion and expands the liquid–liquid interfacial area. However, effective methods to synthesize stable C/W emulsion under high pressures and their role in enhancing CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics is less understood and warrant systematic investigation. In this study, we formulate C/W emulsion using an environmentally benign non-ionic surfactant alkyl polyglucoside (APG), and systematically examine the effects of APG concentrations and stirring rates on C/W emulsion stability in a fully-visual reactor. Under optimal 3.0 wt% APG, C/W emulsion forms under 1800 rpm in 13 s and maintains stability for ∼ 7 hrs with average CO 2 micro-droplet size of ∼ 14 μm. The dispersion of liquid CO 2 microdroplets promotes ultra-rapid CO 2 hydrate formation, achieving a CO 2 uptake of 187.8 v CO2 / v H2O (water conversion of 94.8%) with t 90 of 40 min, representing a ten-fold increase compared to the conventional CO 2 (L)–H 2 O mixing system by stirring. Findings of this study will guide effective methods for synthesizing and improving the stability of C/W emulsion under high pressure. Moreover, enhanced CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics enabled by emulsion-based method can be applied in a series of CO 2 hydrate-based applications. The study offers both mechanistic insights and practical guidance for future field-scale HBCS deployment.
