Efficient Removal of Cd(II) Using Potassium Permanganate Modified Spent Coffee Grounds: Kinetics, Equilibrium, and Adsorption Mechanism Studies

Yun Xing,Xiangfei Zhang,Yuqi Zhou,Jingjing Guo,Yuan Huang,Xiaohan Xu,Jiankun Li,Dingyu Wang

The disposal of spent coffee grounds (SCG) not only represents a significant waste of resources but also poses environmental challenges, highlighting the need for effective pretreatment strategies to mitigate potential adverse effects. Incorporating metal oxides into biomass-based adsorbents can enhance their adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions by enhancing electrostatic attraction and increasing the number of accessible active sites. In this study, KMnO 4 -modified spent coffee grounds (KMnO 4 -SCGS) were successfully synthesized and applied for the removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Key process parameters, including contact time, pH, initial Cd(II) concentration, temperature, and adsorbent dosage, were systematically investigated. Characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that KMnO 4 treatment increased the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups and promoted the deposition of manganese oxides (MnO x ) on the adsorbent surface. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model, and the kinetics were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of KMnO 4 -SCGS for Cd(II) was determined to be 49.54 mg/g at pH 5.0, and 298 K. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The enhanced Cd(II) uptake was primarily attributed to the synergistic effect of MnO x and oxygen-containing functional groups, which facilitated the formation of surface complexes. In conclusion, KMnO 4 modification represents an effective strategy for developing high-performance adsorbents for Cd(II) removal.

Revealing the Hidden Role of Cd in p-Type Mg3Sb2: Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance by Grain Boundary Segregation Engineering

Zhou Li,Deming Dong,Xiaoyu Yang,Jun Qian,Mengruizhe Kong,Han Wan,Ni Ma,Wei Bai,Pengfei Nan,Binghui Ge,Jiming Song,G. Jeffrey Snyder,Yuan Yu

Grain boundary (GB) scattering of charge carriers plays an important role in the electrical properties of materials. For thermoelectrics, this scattering can significantly reduce the carrier mobility and output power. Various GB engineering strategies, such as increasing the grain size and decreasing the GB potential barrier height, have been demonstrated in n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 -based thermoelectrics. Yet, similar effects in p-type Mg 3 Sb 2 have been less reported, and effective methods to modify the GB potential are elusive. Here, we reveal that Cd can reduce the GB barrier height via segregation to the GB. The enrichment of Cd suppresses the formation of hole-killer defects (Sb Mg + ) and thus reduces the GB resistance, leading to significant improvements in the electrical conductivity and power factor. A two-phase model shows a progressive decrease in the GB barrier height with increasing Cd content. Simultaneously, the GB Cd segregation and grain-interior Cd alloying strengthen the phonon scattering and reduce the sound velocity, substantially reducing the thermal conductivity. Consequently, a maximum ZT of 0.84 is achieved in Mg 2.5 Cd 0.5 Sb 2– 1 at% NaF at 773 K. These findings unravel the hidden role of Cd in tuning the GB characteristics and the transport properties of Mg 3 Sb 2 , revisiting the functionality of conventional dopants in materials design.

Mesoporous MCM-41 supported amorphous MnLa oxides for selective removal of As(V), Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Qing Nie,Yu Sun,Dongxu Xue,Jianwei Fan,Wei-xian Zhang

The coexistence of oxyanion-type and cationic heavy metals in complex aqueous systems poses a significant challenge for adsorption-based remediation. Herein, mesoporous silica-supported manganese‑lanthanum mixed oxides (Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41) were synthesized via an oxidation-coprecipitation strategy. The mesoporous silica framework effectively confined amorphous Mn/La oxides, suppressing oxide aggregation and manganese leaching. The as-prepared Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41 materials exhibited efficient removal of heavy metals, with maximum adsorption capacities of 57.3 mg g −1 for As(V), 141.6 mg g −1 for Cd(II), and 333.0 mg g −1 for Pb(II). By adjusting the Mn/La molar ratio, the adsorption behavior toward different metal species could be systematically regulated, with La-enriched compositions favoring As(V) uptake and Mn-rich materials exhibiting enhanced affinity toward Cd(II) and Pb(II). High removal efficiencies for all three heavy metals were maintained under multicomponent coexisting conditions. The composition-dependent adsorption behavior reflects a functional differentiation of Mn- and La-associated surface sites, enabling the simultaneous immobilization of oxyanion and cationic contaminants. Overall, this work demonstrates that integrating mesoporous confinement with compositional regulation provides an effective strategy for constructing stable and multifunctional adsorbents for multicomponent heavy-metal remediation.

Trap-Mediated Energy Transfer of Localized Excitons for Efficient Mn2+ Luminescence in Highly Doped Cd-Based Perovskite Nanocrystals

Jie Hou,Bin Yang,Jun Chen,Huan Yang,Junsheng Chen,Jianyong Liu

Mn 2+ -doped nanomaterials are attractive for optoelectronic applications due to their characteristic dopant emission enabled by host-to-dopant energy transfer (ET). However, increasing Mn 2+ concentrations typically leads to severe photoluminescence (PL) quenching due to strong Mn 2+ -Mn 2+ interactions and the formation of nonradiative trap states. Here, we demonstrate that this challenge can be overcome in Cd-based perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) by exploiting localized excitons (LEs) coupled to a fast thermodynamic equilibrium with trap states. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy suggests a rapid LE-trap equilibrium (∼100 ps) at room temperature. Mn 2 + doping further enhances exciton localization and redistributes the exciton population into trap states, which serve as intermediates for Dexter-type energy transfer, accelerating Mn 2 + excitation by over an order of magnitude compared to direct energy transfer from LEs. Consequently, efficient and thermally stable Mn 2+ emission is achieved at elevated dopant concentrations. The PL quantum yield exceeds that of the undoped NCs by more than 12-fold and retains 70% of its maximum value even at 20% Mn 2+ concentration in Cs 2 CdCl 4 :Mn 2+ NCs.

A Cd(II) post-modified hydrogen-bonded organic framework toward sensitive uranyl ion detection via turn-off fluorescence

Danrong Chen,Wenbo Lan,Yu Yin,Wanwan Li,Yaolin Dong,Hao Liang,Deshuai Zhen,Jinquan Liu,Fubing Xiao,Shengyuan Yang

Given the environmental and potential health hazards associated with uranyl ion (UO 2 2+ ), developing fast, cost-effective, and sensitive detection methods is of significant importance. In this study, we report a novel fluorescent sensor for the selective detection of UO 2 2+ based on a cadmium-post-modified hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), H 4 -CDI-Cd. The post-synthetic metal modification enhances the π-conjugation of the framework, reduces its energy gap, and creates specific binding sites for UO 2 2+ . The probe exhibits a fast, selective response toward UO 2 2+ via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, achieving a low detection limit of 19.54 nM and a linear range from 75 nM to 1 μM. DFT calculations reveal that Cd 2+ coordination redistributes charge, which not only lowers the electrostatic repulsion for UO 2 2+ migration into the channels but also provides low-energy vacant orbitals (5s/5p) for secondary coordination with UO 2 2+ , thereby enhancing selective binding. The method was successfully applied to determine UO 2 2+ in real water samples (lake water and mining wastewater), with quantitative spike recoveries between 99.61% and 102.61%. This work demonstrates a feasible post-modification strategy to engineer responsive HOFs for the selective detection of UO 2 2+ in the environmental water.

Cd Exposure Confers Cross-Tolerance of Hyphantria cunea Larvae to β-Cypermethrin through miRNA-Mediated Post-Transcriptional Regulation

Zengting Niu,Guotong Sun,Mingtao Tan,Shanchun Yan,Dun Jiang

Heavy metals are prevalent environmental contaminants in pest habitats. This study investigates the tolerance of Hyphantria cunea larvae to β-cypermethrin under cadmium (Cd) stress. Exposure to Cd markedly enhanced larval tolerance to β-cypermethrin. The P450 enzyme was found to be crucial in triggering this cross-tolerance. Notably, Cd exposure significantly upregulated the expression of HcCYP333A29 and HcCYP6AE184 both before and after β-cypermethrin treatment. Silencing these genes reduced the β-cypermethrin tolerance in Cd-exposed larvae. Furthermore, overexpression of HcCYP333A29 and HcCYP6AE184 significantly improved the tolerance of Sf9 cells and Drosophila to β-cypermethrin. Silencing of HcDicer-1, a key gene in the miRNA synthesis pathway, significantly diminished the β-cypermethrin tolerance in Cd-treated larvae. The miR-2739 controlled overexpression of HcCYP333A29, while miR-2854 controlled HcCYP6AE184 overexpression, both of which were essential for β-cypermethrin cross-tolerance in H. cunea larvae under Cd exposure. Collectively, Cd exposure induces cross-tolerance to β-cypermethrin in H. cunea larvae through miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation.

Mn(II)-Doped Two-Dimensional Cd Chloride Perovskites with Near-Unity Orange Emission for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Jinhua Rao,Wenhui Qin,Julian Lava,Junsheng Chen,Xin Mao,Meishan Wang,Ruiling Zhang

Low-dimensional metal halide perovskites have emerged as a promising class of high-performance phosphors for solid-state lighting applications, owing to their outstanding optical properties, structural diversity, and low-cost solution processability. Here, we report a Mn2+-doped two-dimensional (2D) cadmium chloride perovskite, Mn2+:(EDA)CdCl4 (EDA: ethylenediamine), that achieves highly efficient orange light emission with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). The host (EDA)CdCl4 can emit an unusual ultraviolet emission at 320 nm with a PLQY of 51%, associated with Cd vacancy defects. Upon incorporation of Mn ions into the host lattice, an intense broad orange emission emerges at 610 nm with a PLQY of 97% at 265 nm excitation, originating from the spin-forbidden 4T1(G) → 6A1(S) transition of isolated Mn ions. Theoretical calculations and spectroscopic characterizations reveal that efficient electron transfer from the host to Mn contributes to the highly efficient orange emission, giving the doped samples great potential in WLED applications.

Removal of Ammonia Emissions via Reversible Structural Transformation in M(BDC) (M = Cu, Zn, Cd) Metal–Organic Frameworks

Yang Chen,Yadan Du,Puxu Liu,Jiangfeng Yang,Libo Li,Jinping Li

NH3 is the most important gaseous alkaline pollutant, which when accumulated at high concentrations can have a serious impact on animal and human health. More importantly, NH3 emissions will react with acidic pollutant gases to form particulate matter (PM2.5) in the atmosphere, which also poses a huge threat to human activities. The use of adsorbents for NH3 removal from emission sources or air is an urgent issue. However, there are difficulties in the compatibility between high adsorption capacity and recyclability for most conventional adsorbents. In this work, a structural transformation strategy using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is proposed for large-scale and recyclable NH3 adsorption. A series of M(BDC) (M = Cu, Zn, Cd) materials can transform into one-dimensional M(BDC)(NH3)2 after NH3 adsorption, resulting in repeatable adsorption capacities of 17.2, 14.1, and 7.4 mmol/g, respectively. These MOFs can be completely regenerated at 250 °C for 80 min with no adsorption capacity loss. Besides, breakthrough and cycle tests indicate that Cu(BDC) and Zn(BDC) show good performance in the removal of low concentrations of NH3 from the air. Overall, combining the advantages of high adsorption capacity and recyclability due to the reversible structural transformation, Cu(BDC) and Zn(BDC) can be employed as ideal adsorbent candidates for NH3 removal.

A2BBi2(PO4)2(P2O7) (A = K, Rb, B = Pb, Cd): the Effect of Cation Sizes on Structural Evolution

Lu Qi,Zhaohui Chen,Lu Li,Qun Jing,Na Li,Zhongqi Jiang,Xiaoyu Dong,Ming-Hsien Lee

Two homologous new mixed-metal phosphates K 2 PbBi 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) ( I ) and Rb 2 CdBi 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) ( II ) were successfully synthesized in A 2 BBi 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) (A = K, Rb, B = Pb, Cd) system through the traditional high-temperature solid-phase method. The single crystal structures of the two compounds are shown to be the unique three-dimensional (3D) framework composed of different types of layers, but not isomorphic. We compared series compounds A 2 PbBi 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) (A = K, Rb, Cs), which are isomorphic and crystallize in the same space group Pnma . It is noteworthy that they are distinct different in degree of structural disorder, which is tuned by A-site cations. The effect of A-site cations is recognized by analyzing the disorder degree in three related structures and other available 182 mixed-metal phosphates. To the best of our knowledge, such structural analysis is rarely reported in inorganic phosphates and the cation modulation strategy can be used to guide structural disorder according to the difference-value (D-value) of cation radii. Furthermore, the syntheses, thermal analysis, relevant spectroscopic measurements and theoretical calculations for I and II compounds were also discussed. Graphical Two new mixed-metal phosphates K 2 PbBi 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) and Rb 2 CdBi 2 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) were firstly reported and the cation size effect has substantial influence on the crystal structural disorder combining with the title compounds and 182 phosphates.

Dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) modulates Ca-Cd homeostasis and metabolic-mitochondrial functions to attenuate cadmium-induced toxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans

Khurram Shehzad,Tianying Wan,Shuxin Tu,Zhiheng Wang,Waqar Ali,Saireen Ahsen,Saba Babar,Jie Zhang

Dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) is a cyclic organosilicon monomer widely used in consumer and industrial products and is increasingly detected in environmental and biological systems. Previous studies have shown that D6 modulates the ecological behavior of the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) in soil and reduces Cd accumulation in plants; however, D6-mediated stress responses to Cd in animals and their underlying mechanisms remain inadequately explored. This study reveals that D6 exerts multi-layered protective effects against Cd toxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans . Cd exposure significantly reduced lifespan, brood size, locomotion, and growth, whereas D6 co-treatment (Cd_D6) improved survival by 20%, increased brood size from 64 ± 4.37–90 ± 1.53 eggs, and partially restored locomotor activity. D6 also reduced germline apoptosis and decreased internal Cd accumulation by more than 30%, while stabilizing Ca homeostasis. Biochemically, D6 reversed Cd-induced declines in glucose, pyruvate, and ATP levels, restored mitochondrial ultrastructure, and lowered ROS and MDA accumulation, alongside partial recovery of antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, POD, HK, ATPase). Transcriptomic profiling revealed that D6 counteracted Cd-driven repression of metabolic and mitochondrial pathways, including peroxisomal β-oxidation , ubiquinone biosynthesis, and genes essential for lipid catabolism (e.g., acs-7 , acox-3 , nkat-1 ). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified a D6-responsive module enriched with regulatory genes associated with metabolic repair and stress resilience. Collectively, these findings identify D6 as a previously unrecognized organosilicon compound that reduces Cd accumulation and reprograms metabolic and mitochondrial functions, thereby improving organismal homeostasis and enhancing resilience to Cd stress.
