Dithionite–zerovalent iron coupling drives Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycling for persulfate activation and PAH degradation in carbonate-rich water

Maolin Wang,Haoyang Fu,Yanchun Fan,Gang Zhao,Tianwen Liu,Yi Liu,Qingqing Wu,Ying Huang

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in carbonate-rich water is severely constrained by radical scavenging and surface passivation of iron-based activators. Here, a dithionite–zerovalent iron–copper (DTN–ZVI–Cu) ternary system was developed to promote persulfate activation toward predominantly non-radical oxidation under bicarbonate-rich conditions. DTN and ZVI accelerated Cu(II)-to-Cu(I) reduction while simultaneously regenerating the ZVI surface, thereby sustaining Cu-centered redox turnover and facilitating the formation of Cu(III)-like oxidizing species. In parallel, DTN promoted sulfur-centered conversion pathways that favored 1 O 2 generation. These non-radical oxidizing pathways are generally less susceptible to inorganic-anion scavenging than conventional sulfate and hydroxyl radicals. Under standard conditions, the system achieved 91% acenaphthene removal within 60 min ( k obs  = 0.039 min −1 ), an 8.7-fold kinetic enhancement over ZVI/PS alone. Moderate bicarbonate further promoted degradation, with k obs reaching 0.13 min −1  at 250 mg/L HCO 3 − , which is consistent with a plausible role of copper–carbonate complexation in stabilizing Cu redox cycling and favoring non-radical oxidation pathways. XPS analysis suggested that DTN–ZVI coupling elevated the reactive copper pool (Cu(I) + Cu(III)) to 57% of total surface copper. Applied to synthetic wastewaters, the system maintained 90–96% PAH removal at optimal dosages, indicating strong performance across complex saline matrices. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using coexisting Cu(II) as a catalytic resource for non-radical persulfate activation in carbonate-rich water.

Synergistic effect of Cu and Cu+ sites in MOF-derived coral-like heterostructures for efficient electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia

Xingjia Liu,Ziyang Liu,Kai Zhou,Chenyong Wang,Suyuan Liu,Xue-Zhi Song,Xiaofeng Wang,Zhenquan Tan

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) offers a sustainable route for ammonia synthesis and wastewater remediation, yet developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts remains challenging. Herein, we report a high-performance heterostructured electrocatalyst, Cu-Cu 2 O@C-350, derived from controlled pyrolysis of a Cu-BTC metal-organic framework. Calcination at 350 °C transforms the precursor into a three-dimensionally interconnected coral-like carbon architecture embedded with Cu/Cu 2 O heterojunctions, exposing abundant active sites and facilitating mass transport. The optimal catalyst exhibits exceptional NO 3 RR performance, achieving a high ammonia yield of 46.63 mg h −1 mg cat −1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 98.43% at −0.7 V vs. RHE. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals the synergistic mechanism that metallic Cu sites initiate nitrate reduction to nitrite, while Cu + sites facilitate deep hydrogenation of nitrite to ammonia. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the built-in electric field at the Cu-Cu 2 O interface induces directional electron transfer from Cu to Cu 2 O, optimizing intermediate adsorption and lowering the kinetic barrier. Finally, a rechargeable Zn-NO 3 battery with Cu-Cu 2 O@C-350 as the cathode delivers a peak power density of 2.07 mW cm −2 , highlighting its potential for practical energy conversion. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of MOF-derived heterostructured electrocatalysts for efficient electrocatalytic reactions.

Active metal brazing of Si3N4/Cu joint via a Cu-Sn-Ti filler: oxygen participation tailored interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties

Wei Feng,Jian Zhang,Yong Xiao,Peng Cao,Guoqiang Luo,Qiang Shen

Active metal brazing of Si 3 N 4 /Cu joints typically forms a rigid TiN/Ti 5 Si 3 interface that suffers from significant thermal mismatch. This study demonstrates an alternative strategy for engineering the interfacial reaction pathway using a (Cu20Sn) 100-x Ti x filler. A distinct Cu 2 Ti 4 O interfacial layer formed through oxygen participation in the interfacial reaction during brazing. Thermodynamic analysis reveals that the Ti-O reactions possess a significantly greater driving force than conventional Ti-N and Ti-Si reactions. The resulting Cu 2 Ti 4 O phase establishes a beneficial coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) gradient across the joint, thereby effectively mitigating interfacial thermal stress. Joint brazed with 5 wt% Ti achieved the highest shear strength of 137.3 MPa, which is attributed to the optimized morphology of a discontinuous Cu 2 Ti 4 O layer and the reduced brittle CuSn 3 Ti 5 precipitation. These results demonstrate a new approach for interfacial engineering of non-oxide ceramic joints, confirming that trace oxygen can act as an effective microstructural modifier.

Proton–electron synergistic transport in nickel–Iron layered double hydroxide decorated Cu/Cu₂O heterostructure for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia

Shijian Zhang,Xiuxiu Huang,Wenbin Ruan,Xiaotong Mu,Kai Chen,Ge Ge,Hao Zhang,Jie Li,Yaner Ruan,Xiufang Wang

A self-supporting hierarchical NiFe-LDH@Cu/Cu 2 O heterostructure has been designed. • The tightly coupled NiFe-LDH@Cu/Cu 2 O heterointerface achieves efficient proton-electron synergistic transfer. • The catalyst delivers NO 3 − reduction performance with high Faradaic efficiency and excellent selectivity toward NH 3 . Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) provides a sustainable approach for ammonia synthesis and environmental remediation; however, the multi-step proton-coupled electron transfer processe poses significant challenges for achieving high efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we engineered a self-supporting NiFe-LDH@Cu/Cu 2 O (LDH: layered double hydroxides) heterostructure via facile hydrothermal and electrochemical deposition methods. The optimized electrode delivers exceptional NH 3 synthesis performance (1.06 ± 0.058 mmol h −1  cm −2 and a Faraday efficiency of 97.6 ± 1.88% at −0.4 V vs. RHE) and an excellent long-term stability. The experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that NiFe-LDH accelerates water dissociation to yield abundant active hydrogen (*H) species, relieving the *H shortage during the reaction. The Schottky interface of Cu/Cu 2 O further optimizes interfacial electronic configuration, facilitates electron transport, and strengthens the adsorption of NO 3 − and reaction intermediates. The tightly coupled NiFe-LDH@Cu/Cu 2 O heterointerface realizes a highly efficient proton-electron synergistic relay. This distinctive effect drives the coordinated transport of electrons and protons, maximizes the utilization of active hydrogen, and expedites the deep hydrogenation of NO 2 − intermediates. This work provides a rational design strategy for enhancing NO 3 RR performance toward waste nitrate treatment and green ammonia synthesis via proton-electron coupled transfer engineering. Modulating Copper Dispersion and Active Cu0/Cu+ Sites in Cu/CeO2 Catalysts Through Controlled Calcination Atmosphere for Efficient 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Hydrogenation

Mengmeng Jin,Yaolei Zhao,Weiting Li,Tiantian Xu,Jiazuo Wei,Jingjun Liu

2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) is a promising intermediate for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and crown ethers, whereas achieving a high reaction rate in the hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to form BHMF remains challenge. In this work, a series of Cu/CeO 2 –x catalysts ( x denotes H, Air, Ar) were synthesized by calcination under different atmospheres (10% H 2 /Ar, Air, Ar) and evaluated for the 5-HMF hydrogenation to BHMF. Cu/CeO 2 –Ar exhibited a superior reaction rate of 26.8 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 and BHMF yield of 99.1% under the condition (180°C, 5 h, 1 MPa H 2 ), significantly outperforming Cu/CeO 2 –H and Cu/CeO 2 –Air. The characterizations reveal that the calcination in the oxygen-deficient argon atmosphere led to high Cu dispersion and minimized Cu particle size in the Cu/CeO 2 –Ar. These properties resulted in the abundant Cu + –O V –Ce 3+ sites and increased Cu 0 number. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis elucidates the distinct roles of these active sites. Cu + sites are responsible for perpendicular adsorption of the 5-HMF carbonyl group, and Cu 0 sites drive efficient H 2 dissociation. In contrast, the O V –Ce 3+ sites do not adsorb 5-HMF and H 2 . The close synergy between numerous Cu 0 sites and abundant Cu + sites in the Cu/CeO 2 –Ar accelerates the process of 5-HMF hydrogenation to BHMF. Graphical The oxygen-deficient argon atmosphere led to high dispersion and small particle size of Cu in Cu/CeO 2 –Ar. These properties resulted in the abundant Cu + sites for the adsorption of CO from 5-HMF and the numerous Cu 0 sites to efficiently dissociate H 2 , synergistically boosting catalytic reaction rate to 26.8 mmol·g cat -1 ·h -1 .

Dynamic pore adjustment in Cu-BTC via incorporating mobile Cu-Salophen for superior selective adsorption of CO2 from CO2/N2 mixture

Huiyuan Cheng,Jingwei Hu,Shaoke Bu,Yushuang Shi,Guangping Lei

The escalating atmospheric concentration of CO 2 has intensified the demand for efficient carbon capture technologies. Here, an innovative composite adsorbent, Cu-Salophen@Cu-BTC, was successfully synthesized via an in-situ encapsulation strategy to enhance the selective adsorption of CO 2 from CO 2 /N 2 mixture. The incorporation of Cu-Salophen into the Cu-BTC framework was confirmed through XRD, ICP-OES, and FT-IR analyses. The composite exhibited a notable improvement in CO 2 uptake capacity, reaching 8.14 mmol g −1 (273 K) and 4.63 mmol g −1 (298 K) at 100 kPa, representing increases of 11.81% and 12.11%, respectively, compared to pristine Cu-BTC. Moreover, the CO 2 /N 2 separation performance was enhanced by 23.44% (273 K) and 36.06% (298 K). GCMC simulations revealed that the superior performance arises from the synergistic effects of additional adsorption affinities of CO 2 and real-time pore size regulation enabled by the mobile Cu-Salophen molecules. The composite also demonstrated excellent recyclability and improved water stability, underscoring its potential for industrial post-combustion CO 2 capture.

Generation of reactive oxygen species by promoting the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycle with reducing agents in aerobic aqueous solution

Li Wenshu,Zhou Peng,Zhang Jing,Zhang Yongli,Zhang Gucheng,Liu Yang,Cheng Xin

This study investigated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (O 2 − •, H 2 O 2 , and HO•) by promoting the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycle with certain reducing agents (RAs) in aerobic aqueous solution, and benzoic acid (BA) was employed as indicator for the hydroxyl radical (HO•). Hydroxylamine (HA) can reduce Cu(II) to Cu(I) to induce chain reactions of copper species resulting in the generation of the superoxide radical (O 2 − •) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), and the intermediate Cu(I) can further activate H 2 O 2 via a Fenton-like reaction to produce HO•, creating the remarkable BA degradation. O 2 is indispensable, and unprotonated HA is the motive power in the O 2 /Cu/HA system. Moreover, pH is a crucial factor of the O 2 /Cu/HA system due to the protonated HA not being able to reduce Cu(II) into Cu(I). The oxidation of HA can be effectively induced by trace amounts of Cu(II), and both a higher HA dosage and a higher Cu(II) dosage can enhance H 2 O 2 generation and BA degradation. In addition, some other RAs that can reduce Cu(II) into Cu(I) could replace HA in the O 2 /Cu/HA system to induce the generation of these ROS in aerobic aqueous solution.

Cu/(Cu(OH)2-CuO) core/shell nanorods array: in-situ growth and application as an efficient 3D oxygen evolution anode

Ningyan Cheng,Yurui Xue,Qian Liu,Jingqi Tian,Lixue Zhang,Abdullah M. Asiri,Xuping Sun

In this paper, we develop a novel strategy toward the in-situ growth of core/shell nanorods array consisting of Cu(OH) 2 -CuO nanosheets as the shell and Cu as the core on Cu foil [Cu/(Cu(OH) 2 -CuO) NA/CF]. As an integrated 3D non-noble-metal oxygen evolution anode, the Cu/(Cu(OH) 2 -CuO) NA/CF shows high catalytic activity with an onset overpotential of 350   mV and a Tafel slope of 76   mV/dec. It needs an overpotential of 417   mV to drive current density of 10   mA/cm 2 and maintains its catalytic activity for at least 22   h. The attractive performances make it promising candidate as a future high-performance catalyst for applications.

Facile synthesis of self-assembled three-dimensional flower-like Cu-MOF and its pyrolytic derivative Cu-N-C450 for diverse applications

Yan-Ping Yu,Meng-Meng Pan,Ming Jiang,Xu Yu,Li Xu

Despite the rapid development of metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), the development of multifunctional MOFs and their application in catalytic and antibacterial fields is still of great significance. In this work, a three-dimensional flower-like Cu-MOF was successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and its pyrolytic derivative Cu-N-C 450 was obtained through pyrolysis of the Cu-MOF. For the first time, the Cu-MOF was preliminarily verified to have laccase-like activity and exhibited excellent antibacterial ability to Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) at a very low concentration of 10 µg/mL without the addition of other substrate. Interestingly, we found the re-assembly of the micro-sized Cu-MOF to generate larger sized flower-like structures which was not common in the self-assembled phenomenon. We found the collision and centrifugation induced external force interaction might be the main factor. In addition, the Cu-MOF was also be used as adsorbent to remove environmental pollutants, such as methylene blue , and the Cu-N-C 450 can rapidly catalyze the degradation of methylene blue with a high efficiency to 96.7%. This work offers a multifunctional MOFs material and promotes the exploration of extending application of the MOFs.

Tailoring Asymmetric Cu-O-P Coupling Site by Carbothermal Shock Method for Efficient Vinyl Chloride Synthesis over Carbon Supported Cu Catalysts

Yuxue Yue,Saisai Wang,Qi Zhou,Bolin Wang,Chunxiao Jin,Renqin Chang,Liqi Wan,Zhiyan Pan,Yihan Zhu,Jia Zhao,Xiaonian Li

It remains challenging to achieve nanoparticles with uniform size and dispersion or single atoms with identical coordination structure, although various methods have been developed to synthesize carbon-supported nanostructured catalysts. Typically, in the synthesis of vinyl chloride (VCM) by acetylene hydrochlorination, a limited understanding of the optimal architecture for carbon-supported Cu catalysts at the nanoscale greatly restrains their further development and application. To achieve this, Cu single-atom (Cu-O3P) with identical coordination environments and Cu/Cu3P nanoparticles with uniform size were tailored via advanced carbothermal shock method, and their catalytic structure–activity relationships were explored in the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction. In detail, a platform of nanostructured copper catalysts was constructed by the precursor-assisted carbothermal shock method, and the relationship between the coupling structure and electron properties of copper sites and their catalytic performance is correlated. Finally, we derived quantitative activity and stability descriptors that account for the d-orbital coupling and competitive adsorption effects observed in acetylene hydrochlorination. This work provides a precise and versatile approach for designing well-defined carbon-supported metal nanocatalysts and regulating their catalytic performance.

Insights into singlet oxygen generation and electron-transfer process induced by a single-atom Cu catalyst with saturated Cu-N4 sites

Zhicong Lu,Peng Zhang,Chun Hu,Fan Li

Summary Persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes are appealing in water treatment for the efficient and selective degradation of trace contaminants in complex water matrices. However, there is still lacking of systematic understanding of the relationship between multiple nonradical pathways and the active sites of catalyst. Herein, a single-atom Cu catalyst with saturated Cu-N 4 sites on a carbon substrate (SA-Cu-NC) was constructed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which exhibited high catalytic performance and selectivity for pollutant degradation in different water conditions. Combined with the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the electron-rich area around Cu site and the electron-poor area around C site in the saturated Cu-N 4 configuration could efficiently adsorb and activate PMS, which promoted pollutant degradation through the oxidation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and electron transfer process, respectively. This study advances the understanding of the saturated coordination structure of metals and the superiority of multiple nonradical pathways in wastewater treatment.

Yanxin Liao,Qian Du,Shupei Sun,Nianfeng Shi,Guangfu Yin,Zhongbing Huang,Xiaoming Liao

Self-supported Cu2S/Cu(OH)2 composite nanorods for highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensing were in situ grown on Cu foam by simple hydrothermal treatment of aligned Cu(OH)2 nanorods. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the as-fabricated Cu2S/Cu(OH)2 composite nanorods were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscope, x-ray photoelectron spectroscope, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, amperometric i–t measurements. The mechanism of the composite nanorods produced on conductive substrates was also explored. The electrode exhibits a sensitivity of 9626.88 μA mM−1 cm−2 towards glucose with good anti-interference ability, indicating it a promising electrode material for the enhanced non-enzymatic glucose detection.
