Hypothesis Despite that the development of Cu 2 SnS 3 (CTS) catalyst has attracted increasing interests, few study has reported to investigate its heterogeneous catalytic degradation of organic pollutants in a Fenton-like process. Furthermore, the influence of Sn components towards Cu (II)/Cu (I) redox cycling in CTS catalytic systems remains a fascinating research. Experiments In this work, a series of CTS catalysts with controlled crystalline phases were prepared via a microwave-assisted pathway and applied in the H 2 O 2 activation for phenol degradation. The efficiency of phenol degradation in CTS-1/H 2 O 2 system (CTS-1: the molar ratio of Sn (copper acetate) and Cu (tin dichloride) is determined to be Sn:Cu = 1:1) was systematically investigated by controlling various reaction parameters including H 2 O 2 dosage, initial pH and reaction temperature. We discovered that Cu 2 SnS 3 exhibited superior catalytic activity to the contrast monometallic Cu or Sn sulfides and Cu (I) acted as the dominant active sites. The higher Cu (I) proportions conduce to the higher catalytic activities of CTS catalysts. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) further proved that the activation of H 2 O 2 by CTS catalyst produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequently leads to degradation of the contaminants. A reasonable mechanism of enhanced H 2 O 2 activation in Fenton-like reaction of CTS/H 2 O 2 system was proposed for phenol degradation by investigating the roles of copper, tin and sulfur species. Findings The developed CTS acted as a promising catalyst in Fenton-like oxidation progress for phenol degradation. Importantly, the copper and tin species contribute to a synergetic effect for the promotion of Cu (II)/Cu (I) redox cycle, which thus enhanced the activation of H 2 O 2 . Our work may offer new insight on the facilitation of Cu (II)/Cu (I) redox cycle in Cu-based Fenton-like catalytic systems.

ZnO plate, dominantly exposed polar high energy (0 0 0 1) plane, was used to load Cu to build Cu/ZnO plate model catalyst. The catalyst was reduced in different atmospheres and then evaluated for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, quasi in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, in situ UV-Raman, and CO 2 temperature programmed desorption characterizations have been carried out. The exploration results indicate that in situ tuning Cu nanoparticle (NP) morphology can be realized through varying reducing atmospheres. H 2 reduction induced the formation of small irregular spherical Cu NPs covered with large amount of migrated Zn, prompting CO 2 conversion and methanol synthesis . However, CO reduction induced the generation of ellipsoidal Cu NPs with medium size and low amount of migrated Zn, leading to poor catalytic performance for CO 2 hydrogenation. CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol displays apparent Cu NP morphology dependency over the Cu-ZnO based catalysts.

Copper (Cu) electrocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) have attracted much attention due to their ability to produce high value-added C 2+ products (e.g., C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 5 OH, and n-propanol). However, achieving high selectivity of Cu electrocatalysts for C 2 H 5 OH in aqueous-based electrolytes remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we report Cu octahedra modified with low-coordinated Cu nanoclusters (Cu oct @Cu_NCs) as an efficient electrocatalyst for CO 2 RR to C 2 H 5 OH. Notably, the defect-site-rich Cu nanoclusters can promote the adsorption of *CO and increase the *CO coverage on Cu octahedra enclosed by Cu(1 1 1), thus promoting CO 2 RR to C 2 H 5 OH. We achieved a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 48.16 % for C 2 H 5 OH, and that of the C 2+ products is 83.31 % at −1.17 V vs. RHE. This study provides a surface nanostructured route for rationalizing efficient and selective copper electrocatalysts for CO 2 RR.

With the advancement of high-integration and high-density interconnection in chip manufacturing and packaging, Cu bumping technology in wafer- and panel- level packaging is developed to micrometer-sized structures and pitches to accommodate increased I/O numbers on high-end integrated circuits. Driven by this industrial demand, significant efforts have been dedicated to Cu electroplating techniques for improved pillar shape control and solder joint reliability, which substantially depend on additive formulations and electroplating parameters that regulate the growth morphology, crystal structure, and impurity incorporation in the process of electrodeposition. It is necessary to investigate the effect of an additive on Cu pillar electrodeposition, and to explore the Kirkendall voids formed during the reflowing process, which may result from the additive-induced impurity in the electrodeposited Cu pillars. In this work, a self-synthesized polyquaterntum (PQ) was made out with dual suppressor and leveler effects, and was combined with prototypical accelerator bis- (sodium sulfopropyl)-disulfide (SPS) for patterned Cu pillar electroplating. Then, Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5 (SAC305) solder paste were screen printed on electroplated Cu pillars and undergo reflow soldering. Kirkendall voids formed at the joint interfaces were observed and quantified by SEM. Finally, XRD, and EBSD were employed to characterize the microstructure under varying conditions. The results indicate that PQ exhibits significant suppressive and levelled properties with the new structure of both leveler and suppressor. However, its effectiveness is dependent on liquid convection. PQ and SPS work synergistically, influencing the polarization effect in various convective environments. Consequently, uneven adsorption occurs on the surface of the Cu pillars, which results in more Kirkendall voids at the corners than at the center along the Cu pillar surface.

Single-atom photo-Fenton (PF) reaction is widely employed for the degradation of antibiotics and water disinfection. However, the key fundamental issues of the valence state cycling of single-atom metals and the activation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the PF process remain indistinct. Herein, we developed a catalyst donated as Cu single atoms anchored hydrangea-like carbon nitride (Cu-SA/CNH) with Cu−N 4 coordination for PF reaction. Compared to pristine CNH, the Cu-SA/CNH exhibited a 2.42-fold increase in PF kinetics. The Cu-SA/CNH/PF system achieved 98.1% degradation efficiency of tetracycline and effectively inactivated Escherichia coli within 30 min. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the formation of Cu−N 4 effectively improved the energy of the Cu d orbitals, leading to the generation of intermediate states that facilitated the Cu 2+ /Cu + cycle. The adsorption capacity of Cu d xz orbitals on H 2 O 2 increased nearly 10 times. This work provides valuable insights for enhancing single-atom PF activity to address environmental pollution.

Zero-valent copper (Cu(0))-activated peroxodisulfate (PDS) generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that effectively degrade azo dyes, but its application is limited by low Cu(I) conversion and narrow pH range. To overcome these barriers, this study introduced hydroxylamine (HA) to the Cu(0)/PDS system, boosting its oxidative capacity by accelerating the Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox cycle. Under the optimal conditions, the Cu(0)/PDS/HA system achieved a 78.5 % improvement in the degradation efficiency of orange II (AO7) within 10 min. UV-Vis spectroscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, and scavenging experiments confirmed SO 4 •- and • OH as the primary reactive species in the Cu(0)/PDS/HA system, with minimal Cu(III) formation. A Systematic investigation of operational parameters (initial pH, Cu(0) dosage, HA concentration, and PDS concentration) and water matrix components (Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , HCO 3 - , and humic acid) revealed their impact on AO7 removal. Furthermore, experiments in real water samples (tap, lake, and river water) validated the practicality of the Cu(0)/PDS/HA system, which was also demonstrated to effectively degrade other common pollutants. In conclusion, the present study provided an efficient strategy to bolster the oxidizing capacity of Cu(0)/PDS system, broadening its application potential for treating refractory organic pollutants.

The development of efficient alkaline water electrolysis catalysts remains challenged by sluggish hydrogen evolution kinetics and insufficient active sites. Herein, a Cu-P-Co ternary electrocatalyst with pine-needle-like nanorod/nanosheet hybrid architecture is fabricated on nickel foam (Cu-P-Co/NF) via one-step electrodeposition. The introduction of Cu and P elements enables the formation of a well-defined Cu 3 P nanorod / Co 2 P nanosheet heterostructure. This unique hybrid architecture provides a vast number of accessible electrochemical active sites. Crucially, the advanced density functional theory (DFT) simulations elucidate that the established Cu 3 P@Co 2 P heterointerface drives substantial interfacial charge redistribution. This interfacial electronic interaction effectively modulates the local electronic structure of the Co sites, specifically inducing a downshift in the d-band center, which optimizes the hydrogen desorption free energy (ΔG H ⁎ ). More importantly, this electronic modulation directly optimizes the H 2 O adsorption free energy on the Co active centers, thereby significantly boosting their intrinsic HER activity in alkaline media. The Cu-P-Co/NF achieves an ultralow overpotential of 70 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media, outperforming most reported Co-based electrocatalysts. This work demonstrates dual regulation of nanostructure engineering and electronic modulation under the ternary synergy through experimental coupling theory simulation calculation, providing a rational design paradigm for high-performance electrocatalysts.

Herein, the Cu(III) synthesized from copper plating effluent was developed for the first time to evaluate the onsite degradation performance of heavy metal complexes in the wastewater, thus achieving the purpose of “treating waste with waste”. The results indicated that synthetic Cu(III) presented the excellent decomplexation performance for Cu(II)/Ni(II)-organic complexes. The removal efficiency of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA significantly increased with increasing Cu(III) dosage, and the degradation of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA by synthetic Cu(III) system displayed highly pH-dependent reactivity. The radical quencher experiments confirmed that Cu(III) direct oxidation were mainly involved in the degradation of Cu(II)-EDTA. Additionally, the continuous decarboxylation process was proven to be the main degradation pathway of Cu(II)-EDTA in Cu(III) system. The coexisting substances (SO 4 2− , Cl − and fulvic acids) showed little impacts at low level for the removal of Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA, while retarded the degradation of Cu(II)-EDTA slightly at high level, which features high selective oxidation. Encouragingly, it was also effective to remove Cu(II)/Ni(II)-EDTA from in treating actual Cu/Ni-containing wastewater through synthetic Cu(III) treatment.

Sorption-enhanced steam reforming of methanol (SE-SRM) is a promising approach to creating a high-purity hydrogen supply. However, catalysts suffer from activity deactivation and low CO2 uptake capacity. In this study, we investigate the role of Ga doping of Cu–MgO in SE-SRM by synthesizing a series of MgO embedded xGaCuMg catalytic sorbents via a sol–gel method. The TEM-EDX mapping results indicate that MgO nanoparticles can be successfully embedded in the bulk-phase of the catalytic sorbent with a stabilized microstructure. The results from in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) reveal that the Ga-doped catalytic sorbent is conducive to promoting the conversion of C-containing intermediates in SE-SRM, and absorbing CO2 in the form of bidentate carbonate rather than monodentate carbonate. Experimental studies verify that the best uptake capacity of 18GaCuMg catalytic sorbent (36.25 mg CO2/g MgO) achieves almost complete conversion of methanol (99.70%) with 100% H2 selectivity at 200 °C. Specifically, no CO is formed during the kinetic-control stage of SE-SRM. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on the Cu(111)Ga2O3(202)MgO(200) model revealed that the Ga doping can enhance the adsorption energies of methanol and carbon dioxide, promoting methanol activation and increasing CO2 uptake capacity. These findings provide valid strategies for functionalized nanomaterial design, which will substantially promote the SE-SRMR performance with desired catalytic sorbent recyclability.

Graphical This paper selectes MBioFs with copper ions as the metal center to design an MBioFs/PANI composite suitable for CO gas sensors. The morphology and nanostructure of the prepared materials were thoroughly analyzed, followed by testing their gas-sensing properties. Subsequently, the gas sensing mechanism of composite materials was proposed and discussed in detail. In addressing the issue of poor gas sensitivity in semiconductor CO sensor materials used in mining, such as pure PANI. This study utilized an ice-water bath in combination with an in-situ polymerization method to synthesize a new composite material consisting of Cu(II)-racemic glutamate nanofibers and PANI. The morphology, structure, and chemical bonds of the composite material were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and spectral analysis. The material's ability to detect CO (100–500 ppm) at room temperature was investigated, revealing a response value of up to 6.8 % for 400 ppm CO detection when the composite material was deposited on a ceramic interdigital electrode. The material exhibited good selectivity and responsiveness to CO detection at room temperature, attributed to the heterojunction formed between Cu(II)-racemic glutamate nanofibers and PANI, which enhanced carrier migration. Consequently, the Cu(II)-racemic glutamate nanofiber/PANI composite(Cu(II)-RGlu/PANI) material shows promise as a high-performance sensing material for CO detection at room temperature and as a low-power, integrable sensor material for underground coal mines. This research contributes to the development of a theoretical framework for such applications.

Tracing copper ions levels in the environment and subcellular microenvironment is crucial due to the key role copper ions play in physiological and pathological processes. Herein, a novel naphthalimide-fused rhodamine probe Rh-Naph-Cu was prepared through modification with phenylhydrazine to produce a closed and non-fluorescent spirolactam. Based on the copper-induced spirolactam ring-opening and hydrolysis process, Rh-Naph-Cu can be employed as a fluorescence off–on probe for copper ions with high selectivity, high sensitivity (limit of detection: 33.0 nM), broad pH-response range (pH: 5.0–10.0), and color change visible with the naked eye. Rh-Nap-Cu could be made into test strips for the in-situ chromogenic detection of Cu 2+ . Significantly, Rh-Naph-Cu can be utilized for the detection of copper ions in living HeLa cells and zebrafish, and exhibits excellent lysosomal-targeting ability with high Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.96.

Abstract Nanostructured CeO 2 supported CuO–MnO 2 (CuMn/Ce) catalysts were synthesized by wet co-impregnation method and compared with CuO/CeO 2 and MnO 2 /CeO 2 catalysts on CO oxidation. The former shows significantly higher catalytic activity toward CO oxidation than the bimetallic oxides catalysts with minimum T 50 . Dual synergistic effects in the interfaces of CuO–MnO 2 and CuO–CeO 2 shall be responsible for the higher oxidation performance of CuMn/Ce catalyst. As Cu/Mn mass ratio varies from 1/0.2 to 1/9, CO oxidation activities of the catalysts present unimodal distribution, and the catalyst with Cu/Mn = 1/1 shows the highest performance (T 50 = 45.8 °C; Ea = 24.11 kJ mol −1 ). Cu acts as CO dissociative adsorption sites, and Mn–Ce supplies activated O species from gas molecule and lattice oxygen, which are both indispensable for improving utilization efficiency of the reactants in the dual redox processes. The catalytic performance of catalyst is also vitally correlated with calcination temperature (160–320 °C). The optimum calcination temperature of CuMn/Ce catalyst is 320 °C. Catalyst characterization results indicate that the pretreatment at 320 °C is decent to obtain desired metal oxides along with fine texture properties. Graphical Abstract
