A special fluorescent probe has been developed, one that demonstrated excellent “off-on-type” change in fluorescence with high selectivity toward Cu2+. Interestingly, the probe–Cu2+ complex could detect cysteine due to the ability of this amino acid to strongly coordinate Cu2+, and no obvious interference was observed from other amino acids and anions. According to the proposed mechanism, addition of cysteine induced decomplexation of the probe–Cu2+ form. Furthermore, the results of confocal microscopy experiments demonstrated the potential of using the probe to image Cu2+ in living cells and mice.

Diatom frustules with hierarchical structures have been widely investigated in many fields due to their unique optical features, excellent mechanical resistance and extraordinarily intricate pore patterns. Herein, Cu 2-x S modified diatomite has been successfully fabricated for the first time via a mild method at room temperature. The Cu 2-x S nanoparticles with diameters of 50–100 nm were uniformly distributed on the diatomite. The as-prepared Cu 2-x S-diatomite (Cu 2-x S-DE) exhibits excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiencies for MB and MO, which reach to 99.1% and 96.9% respectively in 40 min under the irradiation of UV–vis light with 20 mg photocatalyst. The degradation mechanism of the organic pollutant over the Cu 2-x S-DE/H 2 O 2 reaction system was also proposed. This work provides an effective strategy to design and prepare of the diatom-based nanomaterials with efficient photocatalytic degradation activity, which is of great value for the environmental applications.

Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize red-emitting, water-soluble Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) employing lipoic acid as a stabilizing agent. The Ag NCs show aggregation-induced emission property and have good stability and optical properties . Cu 2+ can disperse the aggregated Ag NCs, accompanied by the quenching of fluorescence. However, the formed Cu 2+ -melamine complex by the coordination chemistry between free copper ion and melamine is able to effectively avoid the quenching process of Cu 2+ to the Ag NCs. Hence, the Ag NCs can be applied to design a novel fluorescent probe based on this property to detect melamine. In the determination of melamine, the as-prepared fluorescent Ag NCs exhibit favorable sensitivity and high selectivity. The limit of detection (LOD) down to 0.022 mg/L and good recoveries of real sample experiments were obtained. This fluorescent probe is proved to be convenient and rapid for detecting melamine, with potential application to trace melamine analysis in complicated samples.

Increasing demands for the sensitive, selective, visual, conveniently solid-phase-sensing film for disease-related biomarkers, electrospun nanofibrous films (ENFFs) are a novel sensing paltform because of the high surface area ratios, networked structures, and facile functionalization. In this research, carbon dots (CDs) and quantum dots (QDs) were doped inside and electrostatically assembled on electrospun nanofibers (ENFs), affording ratiometrically dual-emitting fluoresecent films. Because of the FRET process between CDs and QDs on NFs and the strong quenching response of QDs to Cu2+, the as-prepared NFs can visually detect Cu2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity based on ratiometric fluorescent signals. By exploiting the release of numerous Cu2+ from CuO nanoparticles (NPs) under acidic conditions, a sandwich-type immunoassay with CuO NPs-labeled antibody was developed for the detection of biomarker proteins via the response of dual-emitting and FRET-based NFs to different Cu2+ concentrations. Taking advantage of the ratiometrically fluorescent property of these ENFFs as well as the Cu2+-mediated signal amplification strategy, alpha fetoprotein can be detected with high sensitivity (detection limit of 8.3 pg/mL) and selectivity. This strategy demonstrates a promising candidate with a point-of-care assay for clinical diagnostics and biomedical research.

Nature enzyme-based immunoassays have been widely used in fundamental scientific research and clinical diagnosis. However, the limitations of natural enzyme, such as the low physical/chemical stability or susceptibility to protein denaturation, greatly restrained its applications. In this article, we reported a new enzyme-free SERS immunoassay by utilizing plasmonic Cu2–xSySe1–y nanoparticles (NPs) as nanocatalyst to catalyze the click chemistry between the azido and alkynyl substrate which is used as the SERS signal reporter. The unique vibration of C≡C of alkynyl in the Raman-silent region (1800–2800 cm–1) is not overlapped with the signals of the other conventional Raman reporters or endogenous biological species, and thus it can make sure the enzyme-free SERS immunoassay has high selectivity and sensitivity. As a proof of concept, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a biomarker of prostate cancer in blood, has been detected. The SERS immunoassay shows good analytical performance for PSA in the range of 3–120 ng mL–1, and it has been successfully applied to detect PSA in the serum samples of prostate cancer patients, proving that the proposed enzyme-free SERS immunoassay has great potential in the clinical diagnosis of cancer.

9-formyl-8-hydroxy-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H, 5H-benzo[ij]-quinolizine rhodamine B hydrazone (FHQRH), a novel colorimetric chemosensor for Cu 2+ , was synthesized by a three-step synthetic route. It was found that FHQRH showed a high selectivity for Cu 2+ ions and excellent anti-interference capability toward other metal ions. The FHQRH solution exhibited a visual color change after the addition of Cu 2+ , owing to the open spirocyclic structure via coordination with Cu 2+ . The complexation coefficient of FHQRH toward Cu 2+ was measured to be 1:1. Furthermore, this Cu 2+ chemosensor has a remarkable low detection limit of 0.45 μM, which is 2 % of the toxic level (20 μM) in drinking water as defined by the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

A novel sensing system has been designed for the Cu 2+ detection based on the quenched fluorescence signal of 6-carboxyfluorescein (FAM)-labeled DNA/polyethyleneimine. The FAM-labeled DNA showed weak fluorescence at the emission wavelength of 530 nm in a pH 4.8 acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer solution. When the polyethyleneimine was introduced to the FAM-labeled DNA solution, the fluorescence signal was greatly amplified. Subsequently, upon the addition of Cu 2+ , Cu 2+ can be captured by the amino groups of the polyethyleneimine to form an absorbent complex, resulting in a strong quenching of the fluorescence of FAM-labeled DNA/polyethyleneimine via a fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect. Herein, we have demonstrated that this facile methodology can offer a rapid, reliable, and selective detection of Cu 2+ with a detection limit as low as 20 nM and a linear range of 100–1600 nM. Furthermore, the detection results for Cu 2+ in a lake water sample obtained by this sensing system agreed well with that by atomic absorption spectroscopy, suggesting the potential application of this sensing system.

An available route was provided for simultaneous detection and effective adsorption toward Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ . The magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared and functionalized with N-(quinoline-8-yl)-2-(3-triethoxysilyl-propylamino)-acetamide (QTPA) by first using the “grafting from” method, which made the whole process of surface modification on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles simpler and more effective. The as-synthesized QTPA functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles exhibited different fluorescence responses for Cd 2+ (doderblue), Zn 2+ (deepskyblue) and Cu 2+ (tomato red) illuminated under a 365 nm UV light, while other ions, such as Ag + , Hg 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Mn 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ , gave no visible changes under identical experimental conditions. The eye-perceived fluorescent changes only toward Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ could serve as the available proofs for the qualitative analysis of the three cations. The UV–vis spectra results showed that the multifunctional nanoparticles exhibited fluorescence enhancements for Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ , and fluorescence quenching for Cu 2+ . The adsorption experiments showed that the nanomaterial was a good candidate for selective removal and enrichment of Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ , and had the high adsorption efficiency toward Cd 2+ (95.29%), Zn 2+ (92.37%), and Cu 2+ (91.06%). Moreover, the functionalized composites had strong magnetic sensitivity, which could make them susceptible in an external magnetic field, and easy to separate from the solid and liquid phase. More specific to this work, simultaneous fluorescence determination of Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ by naked eye was proposed based on QTPA functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles.

For enhanced photocatalytic performance of visible light responsive CdZnS, a series of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S solid solutions were fabricated by different methods. It was found that the semiconductor obtained through the precipitation-hydrothermal method (CZS-PH) exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 2154 μmol h −1 g −1 . The enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production of CZS-PH was probably due to stacking fault formation as well as narrow bandgap, a large surface area and a small crystallite size . Based on this, carbon nanotubes modified with Cu 2+ (CNTs (Cu)) were used as a cocatalyst for CZS-PH. The addition of CNTs (Cu) enhanced notably the absorption of the composites for visible light. The highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of the Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S-CNTs (Cu) composite was 2995 μmol h −1 g −1 with 1.0 wt.% of CNTs (Cu). The improvement of the photocatalytic activity by loading of CNTs (Cu) was not due to alteration of bandgap energy or surface area, and was probably attributed to suppression of the electron-hole recombination by the CNTs, with Cu 2+ anchored in the interface optimizing the photogenerated electron transfer pathway between the semiconductor and CNTs. We report here the successful combination of homojunction and heterojunction in CdZnS semiconductor, which resulted in promotion of charge separation and enhanced photocatalytic activity.

As a new member of the carbon quantum-dot family, fluorescent nitrogen-rich quantum dots (NRQDs) were prepared by a mixed solvothermal method using 2-azidoimidazole and aqueous ammonia as reactants. These NRQDs are rich in nitrogen up to 40.2%, which are endowed with high fluorescence quantum yield , good photostability, water-solubility and favourable biocompatibility. We further explored the use of NRQDs combined with Cu 2+ as a nanoprobe for sensing fluorescently of cysteine (Cys) in complex biological samples. In this sensing system, the fluorescence is significantly quenched via energy transfer from NRQDs to Cu 2+ for the coordination of amino-containing groups with Cu 2+ . The strong affinity between Cu 2+ and Cys leads to the formation of Cu 2+ -Cys complexes and cause the detachment of Cu 2+ from the surface of NRQDs, thus the fluorescence of NRQDs recover. This nanoprobe allows analysis of Cys by modulating the switch of the fluorescence of NRQDs with a detection limit of 5.3 nM. As expected, the proposed NRQDs-Cu 2+ complex-based nanoprobes were successfully applied for the determination of Cys in human serum and plasma samples with recoveries ranging from 97.2% to 105.7%. The probe ensemble was also successfully applied to imaging of Cys in living cells with satisfactory results, which shows strong potential for clinical diagnosis.

Herein, utilizing fluorescent Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) capped by polyethyleneimine (PEI) with different molecular weights, we constructed a novel Ag NCs-Cu 2+ sensing system based on fluorescence turn-on strategy for trace detection of quinolones, including nalidixic acid, cinoxacin, ciprofloxacin/ofloxacin, and moxifloxacin; these were the representatives of four generations of quinolone antibacterial drugs. The fluorescence of Ag NCs could be efficiently quenched by Cu 2+ , while with the addition of quinolones, the fluorescence of this system recovered rapidly. This protocol exhibited excellent sensitivities to these five quinolones. For instance, the linear ranges were from 1 to 100 nM for nalidixic acid with limit of detection (LOD) 0.47 nM, from 1 to 80 nM for cinoxacin with LOD 0.43 nM, from 0.1 to 120 nM for ciprofloxacin with LOD 38 pM, from 0.1 to 80 nM for ofloxacin with LOD 49 pM, and from 0.1 to 120 nM for moxifloxacin with LOD 48 pM, respectively, revealing that this approach showed low detection limits and wide linear ranges. Benefiting from the high sensitivity, the satisfactory recoveries were obtained for trace detection of quinolones in real samples, such as tablets, human urine and serum.

Polyacrylic acid-grafted ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE- g -PAA) fibers were prepared by radiation-induced grafting of acrylic acid onto UHMWPE porous fibers and were examined for Cu 2+ removal from aqueous solutions. The developed fibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanics test, scanning electron microscopy and energetic dispersive spectroscopy analysis. It was demonstrated that the UHMWPE fibers were modified successfully with grafted acrylic acid, which conferred excellent hydrophilic performance to UHMWPE porous fibers. The mechanics test indicated that considerable mechanical strength (~0.4 GPa) still reserved for the UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers in spite of somewhat radiation degradation. The high-strength, hydrophilic and porous natures render UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers promising as economical adsorbent in wastewater treatment. Prepared under different radiation dose and different degree of grafting of polyacrylic acid (PAA), the adsorption kinetics of the UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers was investigated using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The results reveal a large adsorption capacity of 63 mg g −1 for the UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers and the adsorption behavior follows perfectly a pseudo-second-order kinetics model regarding the Cu 2+ solution adsorption.
