One-step synthesis of a WO3-CuS nanosheet heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance for methylene blue degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Yating Liu,Ming Li,Qingyan Zhang,Picai Qin,Xiandong Wang,Guannan He,Ling Li

BACKGROUND The photocatalytic activity of a pristine semiconductor is unsatisfactory due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Constructing composite photocatalysts has proven to be an effective method to suppress electron–hole recombination. The composites composed of two materials usually are synthesized through a two-step process. However, in this work, a simple one-step solvothermal method employing an homogeneous reaction system was adopted to synthesize a tungsten trioxide (WO 3 )-copper sulfide (CuS) nanosheet heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic properties. RESULTS The formation of the WO 3 -CuS heterojunction was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The composites showed improved visible light harvesting ability, and enhanced photoelectric and photocatalytic properties compared with pure WO 3 . The optimized composite displayed a photocurrent almost five-fold greater than the sum of the photocurrents of WO 3 and CuS, and had superior performance for methylene blue (MB) degradation and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] reduction. The MB degradation and Cr(VI) reduction efficiencies were both improved when they co-existed in the photocatalytic system. Interferential ions Cl − and NO 3 − were much less effective in the degradation of MB than in the reduction of Cr(VI). CONCLUSIONS Improved photocatalytic activity was achieved after coupling CuS with WO 3 , due to the enhanced visible light absorption and efficient electron–hole separation. Photogenerated holes were found to be the dominant reactive species in the MB photodegradation process. A synergistic effect existed between MB degradation and Cr(VI) reduction. Interferential ions Cl − and NO 3 − had much greater effect on Cr(VI) reduction than MB degradation. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Colorimetric determination of glutathione in human serum and cell lines by exploiting the peroxidase-like activity of CuS-polydopamine-Au composite

Wang Yanying,Liu Yaqin,Ding Fang,Zhu Xiaoyan,Yang Li,Zou Ping,Rao Hanbing,Zhao Qingbiao,Wang Xianxiang

In this study, we developed a simple colorimetric approach to detect glutathione (GSH). The proposed approach is based on the ability of CuS-PDA-Au composite material to catalytically oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to ox-TMB to induce a blue color with an absorption peak centered at 652 nm. However, the introduction of GSH can result in a decrease in oxidized TMB; similarly, it can combine with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the surface of CuS-PDA-Au composite material. Both approaches can result in a fading blue color and a reduction of the absorbance at 652 nm. Based on this above, we proposed a technique to detect GSH quantitatively and qualitatively through UV-Vis spectroscopy and naked eye, respectively. This approach demonstrates a low detection limit of 0.42 μM with a broad detection range of 5 × 10 −7 –1 × 10 −4  M with the assistance of UV-Vis spectroscopy. More importantly, this approach is convenient and rapid. This method was successfully applied to GSH detection in human serum and cell lines. A colorimetric approach has been developed by exploiting the peroxidase-like activity of CuS-polydopamine-Au composite for sensitive glutathione detection.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles decorated on a CuS platelet-based sphere: a popcorn chicken-like heterostructure as an ideal material against electromagnetic pollution

Xiaodong Sun,Mingxu Sui,Guangzhen Cui,Ling Li,Xiaopeng Li,Xuliang Lv,Fan Wu,Guangxin Gu

Electromagnetic irradiation has caused environmental pollution and harmful effects on human health. The use of effective materials to attenuate electromagnetic energy is urgently required. In this study, Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) decorated on a CuS platelet-based sphere (CuS/Fe3O4) with popcorn chicken-like micromorphology were synthesized through a solvothermal deposition method. The effects of reaction temperature and quantity of Fe3O4 NPs on the heterostructures, morphologies and electromagnetic absorption (EA) properties of the heterostructures were investigated. CuS/Fe3O4 heterostructures exhibited remarkable enhancement in comparison with pure Fe3O4 NPs and the CuS platelet-based sphere. With the contribution from dielectric and magnetic losses, a CuS/Fe3O4 heterostructure-loaded composite could achieve a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −61.32 dB at 14.00 GHz and an effective EA bandwidth (≤−10 dB) of 4.15 GHz at a thickness of only 1.5 mm simultaneously. The current study indicates that the CuS/Fe3O4 heterostructures can potentially be applied as advanced electromagnetic absorbers.

Design of CuS composite carbon-based Ni Al-LDH multifunctional phase change composite with electromagnetic shielding performance and heat storage capacity

Silong Wang,Zhihua Sun,Yuhao Wang,Taixin Liang,Baoguo Wang,Chunfang Fan,Yanjun Chen,Changcheng Liu,Que Huang

CuS-based composites are widely used in the fields related to photothermal energy storage and electromagnetic shielding and are excellent candidates for composites with phase change materials. To meet the requirements of micro-integration and electromagnetic resistance of electronic products and optimize the thermal management of electronic products, it is necessary to prepare new flexible composite phase change materials. In this paper, through the design of MPC@Ni Al-LDH/CuS double-layer structure, two-step vacuum filtration method is used, and the highly conductive materials CuS and MPC are introduced into the manufacture of PCM films. With the help of Ni Al-LDH, flame retardancy is introduced. The electromagnetic wave absorption performance is enhanced, and the existence of nano-cellulose (CNF) makes the film have excellent mechanical properties. Ni Al-LDH/MPC and CuS substrates with stable and high mechanical properties are prepared by ultrasonic treatment. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) characterizations, PEG successfully entered the MPC/CuS skeleton by vacuum filtration, and flexible phase change composite bilayers (MLPC) were obtained. Due to the synergistic effect of structure and components, the obtained composite film has many different excellent functions. Specifically, when MPC@Ni Al-LDH is 15 wt%, the phase transition enthalpy, thermal conductivity, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical conductivity are 146.8 J/g, 1.07 W/m·K, 38.8 dB and 126.4 S/m, respectively. The 3600 s infrared temperature measurement results show that the sample has stable thermal properties. Due to the presence of CuS, when MPC@Ni Al-LDH is 5 wt%, its absorbance can be kept at 1.51 L/(g·cm), and its photothermal conversion efficiency can reach 90.6 %. The MPC/CuS structure in the composite film provides many heat transfer channels, which reduces the phonon scattering in the heat transfer process and significantly increases thermal conductivity. Therefore, this multifunctional flexible phase change film can be used in photothermal conversion devices and for thermal management of electronic equipment, and it has broad application prospects in wearable equipment design due to its excellent electromagnetic shielding ability and infrared thermal stealth ability.

Zhangxinyu Zhou,Yaoqi Huang,Qiang Shen,Yuanyuan Li,Xiaomin Cheng

The significant importance of developing phase change materials (PCMs) lies in their capability to meet diverse usage needs, particularly in the sphere of solar energy utilization. In this work, a thermal storage substrate was formed by adsorbing stearic acid in a biocarbon skeleton via vacuum impregnation. A composite PCM with multifunctional properties was subsequently synthesized by modifying the carbon mesh with copper sulfide (CuS) and zinc oxide (ZnO), compounding it onto the surface of the heat storage substrate. The biocarbon skeleton possesses a well-graded pore structure , which offers a significant number of channels for efficient heat transfer and effective electromagnetic shielding . The composite PCM retained a latent heat exceeding 155 J·g −1 . The integration of the biocarbon skeleton and modified carbon mesh led to a remarkable 119.42 % enhancement in thermal conductivity within the composite system , as compared to pure stearic acid. Furthermore, granular ZnO and nanoflower-like CuS are effectively integrated on the surface of the carbon mesh, facilitating the formation of localized surface heterojunctions . The composite system exhibits excellent broad-spectrum light absorption capability, producing a significantly elevated photothermal conversion efficiency of 88.93 %. Moreover, the semiconductor effect contributes to a remarkable degradation efficiency of 99.33 % for methylene blue . Significantly, the composite material demonstrates exceptional electromagnetic shielding capability, yielding a total shielding effectiveness exceeding 40 dB. The composite system also demonstrated outstanding thermal and cycling stability, with a negligible latent heat loss of merely 1.9 % even after undergoing 500 thermal cycles. This work proposes a pragmatic methodology to accomplish the functional integration of PCMs.

Composite of CoS1.97 nanoparticles decorated CuS hollow cubes with rGO as thin film electrode for high-performance all solid flexible supercapacitors

Zhihan Yang,Maozhuang Zhang,Yawen Liu,Mingyuan Jiang,Yuesheng Sun,Jianhua Wang,Jiangtao Xu,Jingquan Liu

Stretchable flexible thin-film electrodes are extensively explored for developing new wearable energy storage devices. However, traditional carbon-based materials used in such independent electrodes have limited practical applications owing to their low energy storage capacity and energy density. To address this, a unique structure and remarkable mechanical stability thin-film flexible positive electrode comprising CoS 1.97 nanoparticles decorated hollow CuS cubes and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), hereinafter referred to as CCSrGO, is prepared. Transition metal sulfide CoS 1.97 and CuS shows high energy density owing to the synergistic effects of its active components. The electrode can simultaneously meet the high-energy density and safety requirements of new wearable energy storage devices. The electrode has excellent electrochemical performance (1380 F/g at 1 A/g) and ideal capacitance retention (93.8 % after 10,000 cycles) owing to its unique three-dimensional hollow structure and polymetallic synergies between copper and cobalt elements, which are attributed to their different energy storage mechanisms. Furthermore, a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) was constructed using CCSrGO as the positive electrode and rGO as the negative electrode (CCSrGO//rGO), which delivers an energy density of 100 Wh kg −1 and a corresponding power density of 2663 W kg −1 within a voltage window of 0–1.5 V. The resulting FASC can power a light-emitting diode (LED) at different bending and twisting angles, exerting little effect on the capacitance. Therefore, the prepared CCSrGO//rGO FASC devices show great application prospects in energy storage.

A visible-light-driven CoS2/CuS@CNT-C3N4 photocatalyst for high-performance rechargeable zinc-air batteries beyond 500 mW cm–2

Yang Zhang,Nengneng Xu,Bingbing Gong,Xiaoxiao Ye,Yi Yang,Zhaodi Wang,Biyan Zhuang,Min Wang,Woochul Yang,Guicheng Liu,Joong Kee Lee,Jinli Qiao

Storing solar energy in battery systems is crucial to achieving a green and sustainable society. However, the efficient development of photo-enhanced zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is limited by the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers on the photocathode. In this work, the visible-light-driven CoS 2 /CuS@CNT-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with unique petal-like layer structure was designed and developed, which can be used as air electrode for visible-light-driven ZABs. The superior performance of ZABs assembled by CoS 2 /CuS@CNT-C 3 N 4 was mainly attributed to the successful construction of Schottky heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which accelerates the transfer of electrons from g-C 3 N 4 to CoS 2 /CuS cocatalysts, improves the carrier separation ability, and extends the carrier lifetime. Thereinto, the visible-driven ZABs assembled by CoS 2 /CuS@CNT-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst has a power density of 588.90 mW cm –2 and a charge-discharge cycle of 643 h under visible light irradiation, which is the highest performance ever reported for photo-enhanced ZABs. More importantly, the charge-discharge voltage drop of ZABs was only 0.54 V under visible light irradiation, which is significantly lower than the voltage drop (0.94 V) in the dark. This study provides a new idea for designing efficient and stable visible-light-driven ZABs cathode catalysts.

A MgAl-LDH-CuS nanosheet-based thermo-responsive composite hydrogel with nir-responsive angiogenesis inhibitor releasing capability for multimode starvation therapy

Liu Xueyan,Hu Tingting,Jia Yijiang,Yang Shuqing,Yang Yu,Cui Zhuolin,Wang Tao,Liang Ruizheng,Tan Chaoliang,Wang Yuji

The rapid proliferation of tumors is highly dependent on the nutrition supply of blood vessels. Cutting off the nutrient supply to tumors is an effective strategy for cancer treatment, known as starvation therapy. Although various hydrogel-based biomaterials have been developed for starvation therapy through glucose consumption or intravascular embolization, the limitations of single-mode starvation therapy hinder their therapeutic effects. Herein, we propose a dual-function nutrition deprivation strategy that can block the nutrients delivery through extravascular gelation shrinkage and inhibit neovascularization through angiogenesis inhibitors based on a novel NIR-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel. CuS nanodots-modified MgAl-LDH nanosheets loaded with angiogenesis inhibitor (sorafenib, SOR) are incorporated into the poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel by radical polymerization to obtain the composite hydrogel (SOR@LDH-CuS/P). The SOR@LDH-CuS/P hydrogel can deliver hydrophobic SOR with a NIR-responsive release behavior, which could decrease the tumor vascular density and accelerate cancer cells apoptosis. Moreover, the SOR@LDH-CuS/P hydrogel exhibits higher (3.5 times) compressive strength than that of the PNIPAAm, which could squeeze blood vessels through extravascular gelation shrinkage. In vitro and in vivo assays demonstrate that the interruption of nutrient supply by gelation shrinkage and the prevention of angiogenesis by SOR is a promising strategy to inhibit tumor growth for multimode starvation therapy.

Unveiling amoxicillin photocatalytic decontamination utilizing CuFe2O4/CuS core-shell heterostructure-integrated peroxymonosulfate activation: Mechanism insights, aquatic hazard assessment, and environmental implementation

Chao Lei,Mingli Ye,Jun Tang,Cun Yu,Sha Yu

In this study, the performance of an efficient magnetic core-shell heterostructure, CuFe 2 O 4 /CuS (referred to as CFOCS), was assessed for the disintegration of amoxicillin (AMOX) under simulated sunlight irradiation in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The Characterization analyses demonstrated the successful construction of the CFOCS magnetic core-shell. Comparative studies demonstrated the superior performance of the CFOCS/PMS/xenon ternary system compared to binary and individual processes, with a synergy index (SI) of 1.21. The purification experiments illustrated that complete removal of the AMOX antibiotic was achieved under optimized conditions, including a pH of 7.0, PMS dosage of 2 mM, CFOCS quantity of 0.5 g L −1 , and AMOX concentrations of 10 and 20 mg L −1 . To elucidate the charge carrier migration pathway, a type II heterojunction model was proposed, supported by radical scavenging experiments, UV–Vis DRS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and Mott-Schottky (M-S) analyses. The mechanistic investigation revealed the dual activity of PMS, which can be activated both in the aqueous solution under xenon light and on the catalyst surface through Cu (I) and Cu (II) centers. A key aspect of this study was a comprehensive aquatic hazard assessment of amoxicillin (AMX) in both treated and untreated aqueous solutions, utilizing the hazard quotient (HQ) method. Eventually, the investigated ternary system demonstrated remarkable efficiency in AMX degradation across various water systems, including lake water, tap water, and deionized water (DIW). Notably, the system maintained exceptional stability in all tested water bodies, underscoring the practical applicability of CFOCS catalyst in real-world scenarios.

Tumor Microenvironment Activated Heptamethine Cyanine Photosensitizer for In Situ CuS Nanoparticle Generation Triggering Near Infrared Fluorescence Imaging and Synergistic Photothermal/Photodynamic Therapy

Qian An,Shengze Su,Yicheng Wang,Yi Zhang,Xingcan Li,Tao Liang,Hongping Deng,Xiaoxing Xiong,Yanying Wang,Wing-Leung Wong,Chunya Li,Youjia Tang

Conventional “always-on” phototherapies often suffer from insufficient tumor selectivity and suboptimal utilization of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and photothermal therapy, limiting their clinical efficacy. Herein, a novel activatable, single-component theranostic system was developed for overcoming these limitations via tumor microenvironment-triggered dual-modal phototherapy. A heptamethine cyanine-based photosensitizer, Cu-Icy-H 2 S, was rationally designed by integrating an iodo-substituted cyanine fluorophore with a Cu 2 + –cyclen complex. This molecule remains photoinactive under physiological conditions but undergoes rapid activation in the presence of elevated hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a tumor-associated biomarker. The H 2 S-mediated reaction triggers in situ formation of CuS nanoparticles and simultaneously liberates a photoactive cyanine derivative (Icy-H 2 S). This dual transformation enables concurrent photodynamic therapy (PDT) through ROS generation and photothermal therapy (PTT) via CuS-mediated heat production under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Moreover, the fluorescence of Icy-H 2 S facilitates real-time NIR imaging, allowing precise tumor localization and therapy guidance. In vivo studies in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice demonstrated significant tumor inhibition with minimal systemic toxicity, confirming the potent synergistic efficacy of the PDT-PTT combination strategy. This work introduces a reasonable design for H 2 S-responsive, single-component theranostic agents and addresses the intrinsic photothermal instability of cyanine dyes by leveraging in situ CuS nanoparticle formation for enhanced photothermal conversion.

Preparation of Superhydrophobic PU@CuS via Electroless Plating and Its Application on Photothermal-Assisted Separation of High-Viscosity Crude Oil from Water

Yunpeng Liu,Enyu He,Sanjay S. Latthe,Rajaram S. Sutar,Ruimin Xing,Renbao Zhao,Xuesong Huang,Shanhu Liu

Crude oil spills pose serious challenges due to low fluidity and high viscosity. Researchers are exploring a range of sustainable cleanup solutions, such as using heating components to reduce oil viscosity. Herein, an electroless plating technique was adopted for depositing copper sulfide (CuS) on a polyurethane (PU) sponge by a coordination strategy. Subsequently, a layer of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) was deposited to enhance the surface oil absorption ability. The PU@OTS-CuS sponge has demonstrated superhydrophobicity and remarkable oil absorption capability ranging from 11.5 to 47 g/g for oils with diverse viscosities. Moreover, it has sustained its 22.5 g/g oil absorption capacity for lubricant oils and separation efficiency of over 97% for the n-hexane and dichloromethane–water mixture even after undergoing 10 cycles. The surface temperature of the modified sponge was increased to 74 °C within 180 s under 1 sun irradiation and a sustained crude oil absorption capacity of 20 g/g even after 10 cycles. In continuous crude oil remediation, the modified sponge collected 3.257 g within 15 min at a rate of 0.542 g/min. Additionally, the modified sponge revealed superior stability against immersion in seawater and different pH solutions, exposure to UV light, sand abrasion, mechanical compression, and cyclic photothermal performance. This research presents a new strategy for depositing a photothermal component on sponge surfaces to improve crude oil cleanup.

Electrochemiluminescence quenching of luminol by CuS in situ grown on reduced graphene oxide for detection of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide

Xiaojian Li,Peng Lu,Bin Wu,Yaoguang Wang,Huan Wang,Bin Du,Xuehui Pang,Qin Wei

A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal-off strategy based on CuS in situ grown on reduced graphene oxide (CuS-rGO) quenching luminol/H 2 O 2 system was firstly proposed. Luminol was grafted on the surface of Au@Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 nanoflowers (Luminol-Au@Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ) which exhibited excellent catalytic effect towards the reduction of H 2 O 2 to enhance the ECL intensity of luminol. Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 nanoflowers showed large surface area which can immobilize more Fe 3 O 4 and Au nanoparticles . The quenching mechanism of CuS-rGO was due to ECL resonance energy transfer (RET). The spectral overlap between fluorescence spectrum of Luminol-Au@Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and UV–vis absorption spectrum of CuS-rGO revealed that resonance energy transfer was possible. Au nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of CuS-rGO to capture secondary antibodies. After a sandwich-type immunoreaction, a remarkable decrease of ECL signal was observed. Under the optimal conditions, the immunosensor showed excellent performance for N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) detection with a wide detection range from 0.5 pg mL −1 to 20 ng mL −1 and a low detection limit of 0.12 pg mL −1 (S/N = 3). The prepared NT-proBNP immunosensor displayed high sensitivity, excellent stability and good specificity.
