Ag-decorated ZnO/SnO2 nanofibers-based gas sensor for n-butanol sensing

Yan Chen,Qingsong Luo,Shuang Gao,Runduo Teng,Qiyuan Fu,Yanting Wang,Changhao Feng

The highly sensitive and rapid detection of n-butanol holds great significance for environmental protection and human health. In this study, Ag-decorated ZnO/SnO 2 (AZSO) nanofibers were fabricated via electrospinning followed by an Ag decoration process. Compared with the undecorated ZnO/SnO 2 nanofibers (ZSO), the as-prepared AZSO sensor exhibited enhanced gas-sensing performance, as its response to 30 ppm n-butanol increased from 29.68 to 37.15. Meanwhile, at the optimal operating temperature of 150 °C, it demonstrates an ultra-fast response time of only 1 s, and its recovery time is drastically shortened from 1776 s to 227 s. In addition, AZSO exhibited stronger selectivity towards n-butanol, accompanied by excellent repeatability and long-term stability. The enhanced gas-sensing performance of AZSO was attributed to the synergistic effect of the Ag spillover effect, the ZnO/SnO 2 n-n heterojunction, and the interfacial electron transfer.

Enhanced acetone gas sensor based on Y-doped ErFeO3 prepared by electrospinning

Fu Qiyuan,Long Jingyu,Gao Shuang,Tu Wenjun,Teng Runduo,Lan Tianyu,Feng Changhao

Acetone is a common industrial chemical that can irritate the respiratory tract, damage the central nervous system, and pose health risks; it is also highly flammable and poses explosion hazards. Therefore, real-time detection of acetone is of paramount importance. In this study, acetone gas sensors were successfully fabricated with ErFeO 3 nanofibers doped with yttrium at different concentrations (0, 2, 4, and 6 at%), which were synthesized by a facile electrospinning method, and their gas-sensing properties were systematically investigated. Experimental results demonstrated that Y (yttrium) doping significantly enhances the gas-sensing performance of ErFeO 3 nanofibers. Specifically, EFO-4Y (Y/Er ratio = 4 at%) exhibited a response of 13.66 to 10 ppm acetone at 150 °C, representing a 2.29-fold increase compared to pure EFO. These sensors also demonstrated excellent selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. Compared with other reported acetone sensors, this sensor offers advantages including a simple synthesis method, a lower operating temperature, and a reduced detection limit (LOD). Consequently, Y-doped ErFeO 3 nanofibers can serve as a promising material for detecting low-concentration acetone.

Stable gas nuclei accelerating the amine regeneration for energy-efficient CO2 capture

Xiangyun Liao,Chengdong Kong,Yanchi Jiang,Xiaojiang Wu,Zhongxiao Zhang

Chemical absorption with amines offers an attractive solution for large-scale carbon mitigation, but its practical application is impeded by high regeneration energy consumption. Despite extensive efforts to accelerate regeneration through chemical catalysis, inefficient gas-liquid mass transfer during desorption remains a major bottleneck. Herein, we report a microcavity-engineered desorption packing fabricated via nanosecond laser etching to promote bubble nucleation and release. Benefiting from the enhanced mass transfer, the optimized desorption packing enhances the maximum desorption rate by 92.2% and reduces the relative heat duty by 35.8% compared to the blank case, without significant performance degradation after multiple desorption cycles. Mechanistic studies show that the laser-induced microcavities can entrap gas to form stable gas nuclei sites, reducing the supersaturation barrier for bubble nucleation and thus accelerating the amine regeneration. The universality of this microcavity engineering strategy is demonstrated by its successful implementation on different substrate materials, including Ni, Ti, and Fe. This study provides new ideas for the design and fabrication of highly efficient desorption packings.

Spatiotemporally adaptive metal-gas nanotherapy: Acid-triggered cascade release for osteoporosis treatment

Wei Xiong,Yiming Hu,Changxiong Cai,Xingyun Fang,Ye Liu,Xiangyu Tian,Qingsong Ye,Xigao Cheng,Jing Ye

The treatment of osteoporosis remains a critical challenge due to the limitations of current therapies in simultaneously restoring homeostasis of bone metabolism and modulating the chronic inflammation of bone microenvironment. While the acidic microenvironment greatly exacerbates bone resorption, it also lays the foundation for the application of responsive therapeutic nanoplatforms. Herein, inspired by the rocket-like responsive cascade release principle-defined by a “booster-payload” mechanism, in which a metal ion-doped mesoporous silica shell serves as an early-release booster and a calcium sulfide core acts as a sustained-release payload-a bone-targeted nanoplatform (CSM 3 P) was developed. This platform integrates calcium sulfide nanoparticles with magnesium/manganese-doped mesoporous silica for bone targeting. It leverages the pathological acidic microenvironment of osteoporosis to enable stimuli-responsive and stepwise release of multiple mineral ions (Mg 2+ /Mn 2+ /Ca 2+ ) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), coordinates bone regeneration and regulation of the osteoimmunological microenvironment and thereby achieves metal-gas targeted therapy for osteoporosis. This acidic responsive and sequential ion/gas release model establishes a self-reinforcing therapeutic cycle, where the pathological acidity itself drives a synergistic and adaptive treatment regimen. Both in vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrate the superior efficacy of CSM 3 P in ameliorating the inflammatory bone microenvironment and rebalancing bone remodeling. This work offers a novel paradigm for intelligent, feedback-driven nanotherapy against osteoporosis and other microenvironment-associated diseases.

The growth habit of methane hydrate film at the Gas–liquid interface

Hui Zhang,Jing-Chun Feng,Bin Wang,Yongming Shen,Yue Zhang,Si Zhang

Understanding the interfacial formation characteristics of methane hydrates in deep-sea environments is fundamental to isolate leaking methane (a potent greenhouse gas). We observed the three-dimensional (3-D) characteristics of methane hydrate film (HF) growth at the gas–liquid interface (GLI) under different pressures using micro-nano industrial X-ray computed tomography (X-CT). The results indicate that the primary growth mode of the HFs at the GLI after initial formation was growth through the continuous formation of cracks. This crack-induced growth enhanced the hydrate conversion rate. We compared the thickness distribution characteristics of the hydrate growth under varying pressures. While the early HF exhibited thickening, the average thickness in the later stage of hydrate growth remained relatively stable and homogeneity. This study on the growth characteristics of HFs at the GLI provides a foundation for further development of efficient and stable methods for hydrate utilization and sequestration.

Synthesis gas to alcohols over noble metal promoted FeCu-LDH nano catalyst

Wenshuai Yang,Mingsheng Luo,Zhi Yang,Roshni Rahman,Ziyuan Li,Xiaoteng Cui,Lingman Xia

A highly dispersed FeCu/LDH-based catalyst precursor was prepared by co-precipitation method, and the catalysts promoted with Pd, Pt or Rh were then prepared using an equal-volume impregnation method to be used in syngas-to-alcohol reaction. These samples were characterized by XRD, Raman, FT-IR, In-situ DRIFT, XPS, SEM and N 2 adsorption desorption. The study reveals that the 2D nanosheet structure of the LDH precursor has a large surface area and evenly distributed active sites, leading to the superior catalyst performance. The promoted catalyst generated even higher catalytic activity and alcohol selectivity, notably reducing undesired methane and CO 2 by-products. Rh incorporation obviously enhanced the thermal stability of the catalyst, leading to the long-term retention of the LDH structure. Rich -OH groups offer surface basicity, thereby significantly enhancing its catalytic performance to lower the CO 2 selectivity to 1.34 % and methane to 1.67 % while achieving a remarkable alcohol selectivity of 95.1 %. In-situ DRIFT results reveal that Rh promotion helps balance the gaseous adsorption and bridge adsorption of CO for improved overall syngas-to-alcohols reaction results.

MoS2@PANI composite for highly sensitive ammonia gas sensing at room temperature

Zhiyuan Zhu,Chengli Tang,Xiaoming Li,Ming Li,Peng Wang

Reliable gas sensor is obligatory for accurate detection of ammonia gas concentration in many fields. In this paper, a MoS 2 @PANI (polyaniline) composite prepared by a simple in-situ polymerization process of polyaniline on MoS 2 matrix was applied as the ammonia sensing material. Characterizations of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), EDS (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) were carried out to confirm the information of surface morphology, element, crystallography, and specific surface area of the prepared materials. The MoS 2 @PANI-based sensor showed tunable n-to-p response to ammonia gas depending on the doping content of PANI. The prepared MoS 2 @PANI sensor exhibited a fast response and recovery (16 s/41 s) to 100 ppm of ammonia gas with response value of 4.24 at room temperature. It was demonstrated for satisfying selectivity, repeatability, and stability. Specifically, the XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) in vacuum and in-situ XPS in ammonia atmosphere was carried out and analyzed to investigate intuitive and powerful evidence for the gas sensing mechanism. On one hand, the coordination interactions between the PANI and MoS 2 during the in-situ oxidative polymerization of aniline was demonstrated by formation of Mo-N bond. On the other hand, the existence and function of multiple adsorption sites in the ammonia sensing process was also confirmed. Based on these advantages of the sensor, a portable and visual device by integrating the wireless signal connection, the prepared sensor, and the mobile phone was designed for the real-time monitoring and timely warning of ammonia concentration. The improved sensing performance and probable sensing mechanism elucidated can provide helpful reference for the development of room-temperature responsive ammonia gas sensors.

Orthorhombic Phase MoO3 Nanobelts Gas Sensor for Ultra-sensitive Detection of Triethylamine

Fanli Meng,Weijia Cui,Yang Liu,Yanbai Shen,Zhenyu Yuan

In view of the poor sensitivity and upper detection limit of triethylamine gas sensors, high performance triethylamine sensor was prepared by adjusting the crystalline phase of MoO3. In this work, the orthorhombic phase MoO3 nanobelts were synthesized through hydrothermal method and used for the detection of triethylamine. The experimental outcomes indicate that the orthorhombic phase MoO3 gas sensor exhibits the peak responsiveness, which reaches 774.47 when the concentration of triethylamine is 100 ppm at 220°C accompanied by a theoretical detection threshold as minute as 10 ppb. The orthorhombic phase MoO3 sensor has superior selectivity for triethylamine stemming from the robust Lewis acid-base interplay with MoO3 and triethylamine and the C-N of triethylamine is easily broken. Finally, the sensing mechanism of orthorhombic phase MoO3 gas sensor is deeply analyzed. Since orthorhombic phase MoO3 possesses a narrow band gap and small size effect, and has a high adsorption energy for triethylamine, the gas sensor exhibits excellent performance. The strategic design of crystalline phase modulation serves as a pivotal approach to enhancing the properties of gas sensors.

Polyoxometalates electron acceptor-intercalated In2O3@SnO2 nanofibers for chemiresistive ethanol gas sensors

Liwei Zhang,Jinmei Tian,Yuting Wang,Tianqi Wang,Meijie Wei,Feng Li,Dan Li,Ying Yang,Hui Yu,Xiangting Dong

Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a kind of electron acceptors , comes into sight in gas sensing field. Here, we in situ construct a group of polyoxomethoate/semiconductor one-dimensional tandem heterojunction materials using convenient one-step coaxial electrospinning method . A polyoxometalates electron acceptor layer was intercalated into In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 nanofibers (NFs), forming In 2 O 3 @PW 12 @SnO 2 coaxial core-middle-shell NFs. Gas sensing performances of the one-dimensional In 2 O 3 @PW 12 @SnO 2 tandem heterojunctions were investigated for the first time. The fabricated NFs exhibited excellent detection performances for ethanol gas. The optimal sensitivity response to 100 ppm ethanol can reach 22.6, which is about 4 times that of POMs-free samples. Other gas sensing parameters were also comprehensively studied. The significant enhancement can be attributed to the addition of appropriate amount of PW 12 electron acceptor which accelerate electrons transfer and reduce the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This work provides a novel strategy for developing high performance gas sensors by constructing tandem heterojunctions as well as introducing POMs electron acceptor, and offers new insight into the development of POMs-based gas sensors.

Synthesis and Gas Separation of Polyimides Containing Trifluoromethyl, Pyridine and Ester Group

Zhongying Liu,Hongchao Niu,Xiuyuan Wei,Zhiqing Liang,Xiangkai Li,Hui Wu,Chanjuan Liu,Xiaohua Huang

In this study, a novel diamine 4-(2,6-bis(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine)phenyl-3,5-diaminobenzoate (FPPAB) containing trifluoromethyl, pyridine, and ester groups was synthesized by a three-step organic reaction. Then, four structures of copolyimides were prepared by a one-step polycondensation reaction using diamine (FPPAB), dianhydride 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropyl)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), and four commercial diamines. The synthesized copolyimides exhibited high thermal stability, with the glass transition temperature ( T g ) and 5% loss temperature ( T 5% ) in the range of 210°C–256°C and 343°C–452°C, respectively, and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the copolyimides featured a d -spacing of 4.90–5.57 Å. They also showed excellent solubility in both high and low boiling point organic solvents. Furthermore, the membranes not only had outstanding optical properties (wavelength range of 80% transmittance = 378–454 nm) but also had excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle > 91.96°). Notably, the copolyimide membrane with a fluorene structure showed the highest gas permeability ( P (He) = 46.27, P (CO 2 ) = 21.06, P (N 2 ) = 1.57 barrer) and favorable selectivity ( α (He/N 2 ) = 29.55, α (CO 2 /N 2 ) = 13.69). This membrane also exhibited the largest fractional free volume (FFV). Overall, the prepared copolyimides exhibited a well-balanced combination of properties, particularly in gas separation performance, indicating that the properties of copolyimides could be effectively optimized by adjusting the structure of monomers.

Hollow SnO2 nanotubes as a gas sensor for detection of 3-vinylpyridine

Bingyu Wu,Haoxiang Wang,Qing Hua,Yuyang He,Gang Li,Yan Zhou,Dongpo Xu,Da Wu

Hollow SnO 2 nanotubes were prepared via electrospinning and integrated with a simple gas sensor for the detection of hazardous 3-vinylpyridine(3-EP) in environmental settings. Benefiting from the hollow nanotube structure, the sensor provides a large surface area for gas adsorption, significantly enhancing the response value and reducing the operating temperature. At the optimal temperature of 240 °C and a gas concentration of 50 ppm, the response value reaches 21.13. The detection limit is 0.5 ppm, response time, and desorption time are 17 s and 22 s. This study provides a reference for the detection of harmful 3-EP in environmental monitoring.
