Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are expected to be used for large-scale energy storage due to their low cost and safety, but uncontrolled Zn deposition can lead to dendrite growth. To solve this problem, we designed a cellulose-based fiber-reinforced separator (PCH-x@CF) to achieve a gradient pore structure by non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method, thereby improving the electrolyte permeation, ion transport, and ionic conductivity of the separator. The separator regulates Zn deposition through both physical and chemical mechanisms, inhibiting hydrogen evolution (HER) and dendrite formation. The key to its performance is the addition of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), which improve hydrophilicity, thermal stability (326.6 °C), and Zn 2+ flux uniformity. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that the negatively charged Si–O - group in HNTs can replace the solvated H 2 O in the Zn 2+ coordination shell, thereby reducing the Zn 2+ desolvation energy barrier. In addition, the functional groups (-CN, –OH) in the PCH-x@CF matrix form Zn–O and Zn–N bonds, further promoting uniform Zn 2+ transport. In electrochemical tests, the PCH-12@CF separator was stable for 2500 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and maintained up to 87.5 % capacity after 2000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . This work provides an advanced design strategy for high-performance AZIBs separators by combining gradient pore structures with target chemical functional groups.

Methyl orange was in-situ converted into carbon layers on HNTs. • Carbonization and alkali-etching realized the interface engineering and pore regulation. • HNTs framework prevented the agglomeration of Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets. • The composite removed 98.1% of MO and achieved a maximum capacity of 380.7 mg g −1 within 5 min. In this study, carbonized halloysite nanotubes were obtained by thermal treatment of methyl orange (MO)-coated HNTs followed by alkali activation, which were then used as supports to construct a series of Ni(OH) 2 /carbonized halloysite nanotube composites (denoted as NCHB x - y ) to further remove MO. The as-prepared adsorbent NCHB 0.5 -500 could remove over 98.1% of MO (40 mg L −1 ) and achieve a maximum adsorption capacity of 380.7 mg g −1 within 5 min. Notably, NCHB 0.5 -500 exhibited the strong adaptability to pH and temperature variations, along with the excellent selectivity and versatility in six-mixed-dyes and multiple-anions systems. The adsorption mechanism studies indicated that the tubular HNTs served as a robust framework to prevent Ni(OH) 2 agglomeration, while the alkali-etching constructed a rich mesoporous structure and the in-situ MO modification enriched surface functional groups and introduced π-π stacking interactions. These structural advantages combined with hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attraction synergistically enhanced the interaction between the adsorbent and MO molecules, thereby improved the adsorption performance. This study develops a recommendable method for constructing high-performance and low-cost adsorbents based on clay minerals for wastewater treatment and contributes a sustainable "waste-treat-waste" strategy for functionalizing natural clay minerals. In-situ MO modification and alkali-etching for HNTs contributed to a rich mesoporous structure and enriched surface functional groups, both of which were favorable for enhancing the adsorption efficiency. A dual modification strategy combining MHNT tubular structure and Fe doping is proposed. • MHNT tubular structure offers high surface area and effective charge transport channels. • Fe doping introduces impurity levels to tailor the band structure of g-C 3 N. • Photoelectrode material maintains stable photoelectrochemical response after one-year ambient storage. Dopamine (DA), a key neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, exhibits concentration abnormalities that are closely associated with various neurological disorders. Thus, its accurate and stable detection in biological samples is crucial for early diagnosis. In this study, using melamine as a precursor, hydrochloric acid-modified halloysite nanotubes (MHNT) as a porous support material, and FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O as an iron source, an Fe-doped graphitic carbon nitride/halloysite nanotube (Fe-g-C 3 N 4 /MHNT) composite photoelectrode material was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal dispersion combined with high-temperature calcination method. A photoelectrochemical sensor was subsequently constructed for dopamine detection. Fe doping effectively modulated the band structure of g-C 3 N 4 , broadening the visible light absorption range and suppressing the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Meanwhile, the tubular structure of MHNT provided a high specific surface area and efficient charge transport pathways. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited good linearity in the concentration ranges of 10–200 μM and 200–2300 μM, with a sensitivity of 0.527 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 and a detection limit as low as 0.28 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity for dopamine in the presence of interfering substances in simulated body fluid. Notably, after one year of storage at room temperature, the sensor retained a stable linear photocurrent response with a detection limit of only 0.39 μM (S/N = 3), indicating outstanding long-term storage stability. This work effectively overcomes the intrinsic drawbacks of g-C 3 N 4 , including insufficient active sites and rapid charge carrier recombination, through the synergistic strategy of MHNT incorporation and Fe doping, providing a viable pathway for the development of highly selective and stable photoelectrochemical sensors. Sulfonated hyperbranched polyethersulfone (SHBPES)-modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), HNT-SHBPES, were synthesized and mixed with polyethersulfone (PES) to prepare hybrid ultrafiltration (UF) membranes via the phase inversion method. Pure PES and PES hybrid membranes mixed with SHBPES and HNTs were also prepared. The HNT-SHBPES showed good compatibility with the PES membrane matrix, and a series of PES/HNT-SHBPES hybrid membranes offered improved porosity, surface mean pore size, hydrophilicity, permeability, and anti-fouling properties. These were mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of hydrophilic -SO 3 H of SHBPES, porous HNTs, and the tiny interspace between HNT-SHBPES and PES matrix. When 8% HNT-SHBPES was doped into PES casting solution (MHS–8), its pure water flux reached 351.6 L/m 2 h—this was nearly 2.2 times that of the pure PES membrane (M–0); its rejection rate remained high primarily due to the occurrence of delayed phase separation in the solidification process and the good compatibility between HNT-SHBPES and PES matrix. This resulted in a relatively dense, uniform, and defect-free surface. Additionally, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) were chosen as model contaminants to evaluate the anti-fouling properties of all prepared membranes. After multi-cycles UF experiments, MHS–8 retained a higher flux recovery rate and rejection rate than the other membranes confirming its excellent anti-fouling properties and stable overall performance. This work offers a new possibility for hyperbranched polymer-modified nanomaterials to enhance their compatibility with membrane matrix and improve membrane separation performance.

In this study, a three-dimensional nanocomposite with magnetic features made of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ), graphene oxide (GO) and halloysite nanotube (Hal) was prepared and introduced for rutin separation from real sample based on magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) process. Hal was modified with chitosan (Hal-COS) and showed positive charge, which can combine with GO by electrostatic force self-assembly to fabricate Hal-GO. Based on this, in-situ growth of magnetic sphere on the surface of Hal-GO demonstrated high specific surface area, chemical and thermal stability, water solubility, and capacity of easy separation in aqueous solution. Several characterizations including FT-IR, HRTEM , TGA and XRD evidenced the successful synthesis of the nanocomposite. The results showed that the optimum adsorption pH was 6 and the optimum adsorption temperature was 25 °C. In addition, further experiments showed that the adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model , which indicated that the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity was 107.8 mg g −1 and the maximum equilibrium adsorption time was 120 min. With the optimized conditions, the methodological validation experiments showed that the linear range of MSPE based on Fe 3 O 4 @(Hal-GO) combined with HPLC was 10–100 μg mL −1 , the correlation coefficient of the fitting equation was 0.9991, the LOD and LOQ reached 0.87 μg mL −1 and 2.9 μg mL −1 respectively. It was confirmed that prepared Fe 3 O 4 @(Hal-GO) supported efficient enrichment of rutin when the results were compared to those of other studies.

Developing flame retardant and UV-blocking polylactide (PLA) with reinforced mechanical properties is important but challenging. Herein, bio-derived phytic acid was decorated on halloysite nanotube though silane grafting, ring-opening reaction with melamine and then electrostatic interactions with phytic acid. The obtained phopsphorous-nitrogen-silicon decorated halloysite nanotube (PNSiHNT) was incorporated into PLA to prepare PLA composites. The surface modification significantly improved the compatibility between PNSiHNT and PLA, and the flame retardant, UV-shielding and mechanical properties of the composites were enhanced. At 5% mass loading, the peak heat release and total heat release were reduced by 18% and 12% compared to pure PLA, respectively, superior to most phytic acid-based flame retardants. The relevant mechanism analysis showed that PNSiHNT can restrain the emission of combustible volatiles and promote the formation of protective char layer. Moreover, the flame-retardant PLA showed excellent UV-shielding ability with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value of around 120. Due to the reinforcing effect of PNSiHNT and the strong interfacial interactions between PNSiHNT and PLA matrix, the PLA/PNSiHNT showed 77% and 116% increase in tensile strength and elongation at break compared to the bulk PLA. This study provides a strategy for designing bio-derived organic/inorganic systems for enhancing flame retardant, UV-blocking and reinforced PLA.

Based on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), precipitation polymerization and Pickering emulsion polymerization were firstly adopted to synthesize two composites i.e. HNTs–polystyrene(PSt)–polydivinylbenzene(DVB)(I) and HNTs–PSt–PDVB(II), respectively. After sulfonation by 98% H2SO4, two polymeric solid acid catalysts i.e. HNTs–PSt–PDVB–SO3H(I) and HNTs–PSt–PDVB–SO3H(II) were successfully prepared for conversion of one-pot cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in an ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([EMIM]-Cl). Characterization of two catalysts showed that HNTs–PSt–PDVB–SO3H(I) possessed superior hydrophobicity, content of –SO3H groups, and total acidic amounts to those of HNTs–PSt–PDVB–SO3H(II), but with less very strong acidic sites and non-uniform morphology. Then the amount of the catalysts, reaction time and reaction temperature were optimized for cellulosic conversion over the two catalysts, and a maximum yield of 28.52% for HNTs–PSt–PDVB–SO3H(I) and 32.86% for HNTs–PSt–PDVB–SO3H(II) under the optimized conditions was obtained, indicating very strong acidic sites played a key role in cellulose conversion. In addition, the two as-prepared catalysts could be very easily recycled at least five times without significant loss of catalytic activity.

In this study, we proposed a novel method utilizing polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs)-based hybrid silica monolithic spin tip to analyze hydrophilic β-lactam antibiotics and β-lactamases inhibitors in whole blood samples for the first time. HNTs were incorporated directly into the hybrid silica monolith via a sol-gel method, which improved the hydrophilicity of the matrix. The as-prepared monolith was further modified with PEI by glutaraldehyde coupling reaction. It was found that the PEI-modified HNTs-based hybrid silica monolith enabled a large adsorption capacity of cefoperazone at 35.7 mg g −1 . The monolithic spin tip-based purification method greatly reduced the matrix effect of whole blood samples and had a detection limit as low as 0.1 − 0.2 ng mL −1 . In addition, the spiked recoveries of sulbactam, cefuroxime, and cefoperazone in blank whole blood were in the range of 89.3–105.4 % for intra-day and 90.6–103.5 % for inter-day, with low relative standard deviations of 1.3–7.2 % and 4.9–10.5 %, respectively. This study introduces a new strategy for preparing nanoparticles incorporated in a hybrid silica monolith with a high adsorption capacity. Moreover, it offers a valuable tool to monitor sulbactam, cefoperazone, and cefuroxime in whole blood from pregnant women with the final aim of guiding their administration.

A novel fluorescence probe based on modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by using 1-pyrenylboronic acid selectively grafted onto the inner surface of lumen was successfully achieved. The solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (13C and 11B), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) confirmed that the boronic acid group only binds to alumina at the tube lumen and does not bind the tube’s outer siloxane surface. The modified HNTs (HNTs-PY) inherit the spectroscopic properties relating to the pyrene units. Interestingly, the established Al–O–B linkage gives the H2O2-sensitivity to pyrene grafted tubes. HNTs-PY exhibits a highly specific “turn-off” response for hyperoxide over other reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative ions owing to their chemoselective boronate-to-phenol switch. The “turn-off” response can even be tracked when the additional amount of H2O2 was limited to 1 × 10–6 mol. Thus, the selective modification method under mild conditions for the design of novel organic–inorganic hybrid fluorescence probe may open up a broader application as well as for identification and diagnosis.

In decade years, antibiotics residual has received considerable attention because of their detrimental effects on human health and the ecosystem, thereby resolution of this issue become a burning research project. Herein, we first prepared a novel sustainable hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) (named LCTA) via the combination of halloysite nanotubes-template and in-situ KOH activation, using industrial by-product sodium lignin sulfonate (SLS) as biomass precursor. It was demonstrated that both HNTs template and KOH activation played a key role in the enhancements of the porosity and accessible surface. LTCA exhibited a high specific surface area of 2320 m 2 /g and large pore volume of 1.342 cm 3 /g. Moreover, LTCA showed an ultrahigh adsorption capacity for tetracycline (TC) of 1297.0 mg/g and chloramphenicol (CAP) of 1067.2 mg/g at 298 K, which are far higher than those adsorbents previously reported. Additionally, fast adsorption kinetics, excellent environmental adaptability and good regeneration ability make this novel HPC as a promising material for antibiotics wastewater treatment practices.

In this research work, a reusable and efficient 2D/1D heterogeneous structured photocatalyst based on amine-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) and Bi2WO6 nanosheet (BWO) was prepared using a facile hydrothermal method for decomposing PPCPs under simulated sunlight. On the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), the effects of composite catalysts prepared under various conditions were discussed. The results showed that over BWO/MHNTs with a mass ratio was 3:1, the synthesizing temperature was 120 °C and the precursor pH value was 1, the TCH (10 mg l−1) degradation efficiency reached 100% after 1 h irradiation of simulated sunlight. Moreover, BWO/MHNTs composites kept good recovery and stable photocatalytic activity after 5 cycles. The excellent dispersion of Bi2WO6 on the surface of clay minerals and the oxygen vacancy enhanced electron–hole separation may be responsible for the its high activity and stability. Futhermore, the radical capture test demonstrated that ·O−2 was primarily responsible for the photodegradation of TCH. Thus, BWO/MHNTs composites exhibit a good application prospect in the field of sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation towards PPCPs pollutants in water.

The development of a facile approach to simultaneously detect and separate Hg( ii ) ions in an aqueous solution is a challenging topic in the chemosensing field. Herein, we focus on constructing the Hg( ii )-sensitive fluorescence “turn-on”-type composite materials by using halloysite nanotube (HNT) as substrate. Two types of HNTs-based chemosensors, HNTs-PHT and HNTs-BP, were developed in this study, which exhibit Hg( ii )-sensitive fluorescence “turn on” behavior by forming interparticle and intraparticle excimers, respectively. Fortunately, HNTs-PHT is able to effectively restrict the solvent relaxation of π–π* transition and make it a better detection tool in aqueous solution than HNTs-BP. The addition of Hg( ii ) can trigger a dramatical increase at 469 nm in emission curves of HNTs-PHT, which cannot exhibit emission behaviors without the addition of Hg( ii ). Furthermore, the formation of interparticle excimers makes Hg( ii ) serve as a crosslinker to aggregate HNTs-PHT into precipitations. Following this way, Hg( ii ) ions can be facilely removed from the water via a simple filtration or centrifugation approach. The as-prepared HNTs-PHT shows high specificity and precision in simultaneously detecting and separating Hg( ii ) without the recourse to energy consumption, which will give a novel insight to deal with heavy metal pollution.
