Carbon nitride@Indium oxide (C 3 N 4 @In 2 O 3 ) composite with quasi-shell–core structure was successfully prepared in this work. The photoinduced open circuit potential and current density results show that the C 3 N 4 @In 2 O 3 composite with quasi-shell–core structure could provide the optimal photoelectrochemical cathodic protection capability for 304 stainless steel under visible light when the adding amount of C 3 N 4 in the C 3 N 4 @In 2 O 3 composite is 3 wt%. The light absorption capability of the C 3 N 4 @In 2 O 3 composite was enhanced due to the synergistic effect of heterojunction structure. According to the HRTEM images, photoinduced Volt–Ampere characteristic curves and electrochemical impedance spectra, the ultrathin coating layer of C 3 N 4 on the surface of In 2 O 3 helps to form a heterojunction electric field at the interface between C 3 N 4 and In 2 O 3 , which enhances the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Excessive C 3 N 4 will decline the photoelectrochemical cathodic protection of this composite due to the lower intrinsic electronic mobility and the lower photoelectric conversion property of C 3 N 4 .

With the growing demands on environmental protection and human health, numerous efforts have been devoted to the high-efficiency detection of formaldehyde gas. Herein, a simple and green manner was adopted to generate a 3D/0D heterogeneous structure. It was found that the morphology evolution of the In 2 O 3 -based sample could be fine-tuned through changing the addition concentration. Impressively, the unique hydrangea-like structure was assembled by connecting In 2 O 3 nanosheets. Furthermore, the carbon quantum dots were incorporated to upgrade the performance. The hydrangea-like IO-2@CQDs, hence, exhibits remarkable sensitivity, excellent response repeatability, superior selectivity as well as reliable long-term stability at 160 °C. An outstanding limit of detection can be as low as 86.23 ppb. In addition, the corresponding CQDs sensitization mechanism was comprehensively elaborated with experimental performance, DFT calculations (16 models, 41 images), and surface depletion theory. The active surface sites, n - p hetero-interface, and unique hydrangea-like morphology account for the boosted HCHO-sensitive performance. This work not only highlights the promising combination of metal oxides and CQDs but also provides valuable inspiration and theoretical perspectives for 3D/0D heterojunction construction.

Photocatalytic water splitting by semiconductors is considered a promising and cost-effective method for achieving sustainable hydrogen production. In this study, a CF/SrTiO3/In2O3photocatalytic material with a double-layer core–shell structure was developed. The experimental results indicated that the produced CF/SrTiO3/In2O3composite fiber displayed superior photocatalytic hydrogen production performance, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of approximately 320.71 μmol/g·h, which is roughly seven times higher than that of the CF/SrTiO3fiber alone. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the CF/SrTiO3/In2O3fiber can be attributed to the heterojunction structure enriched with oxygen vacancies. It was found that these oxygen vacancies created defective states that served as traps for photogenerated electrons, facilitating their migration to the surface defect states and enabling the reduction of H+in water to produce hydrogen. Furthermore, the synergy between the heterojunction structure and the conductivity of the carbon fiber promoted the generation and migration of photogenerated electrons, reduced the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and ultimately improved photocatalytic hydrogen production. This study presents a new approach for designing efficient photocatalysts with surface oxygen vacancies on carbon fibers, providing new insights into the sustainable application of photocatalysts.

Recently, the development of an n-pentane-sensing product has always been plagued by the lack of suitable inorganic material with good gas-sensing response and selectivity at low operating temperatures. In this work, Ti-MIL-125-induced one-dimensional tubular In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 heterostructures have been fabricated by a facile electrospinning method and a subsequent heat-treatment process. Obvious morphological evolution from a fibrous to a tubular shape with the presence of In 2 O 3 -TiO 2 heterojunctions can be adjusted by varying the added amount of the Ti-ML-125 component. Compared with pure In 2 O 3 , the optimal In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composites exhibit a blue-shifted energy band (2.52 eV) and an increased specific surface area (227.70 m 2 /g), as well as the enhanced gas-sensing performance on various concentrations of n-pentane. For example, In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -3% can not only display excellent long-term stability and humidity stability but also has a high response of 670–100 ppm n-pentanol at 50°C, much larger than that of pure In 2 O 3 (50) at 150°C. Significantly, In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -3% can still reach the high response of 197–100 ppm n-pentanol at room temperature. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the enhanced gas-sensing mechanism is mainly attributed to the combination of the distinctly increased surface active sites through the regulation of morphology and the introduction of effective In 2 O 3 -TiO 2 heterojunctions, which can be beneficial to improving the surface adsorption/desorption characteristics and the electron transport between n-pentanol and the sensing material interface. The utilization of CO 2 photoreduction into valuable hydrocarbon fuels presents a promising avenue for mitigating climate change and providing a sustainable energy source. However, photogenerated carriers are highly prone to recombination, which adversely affects photocatalytic activity. In our study, we introduce a novel photocatalyst synthesis method, featuring an Ohmic contact (OC) structure that incorporates biomass-derived hollow carbon microspheres (HCM), Pd nanocubes (NC), and Indium Oxide (In 2 O 3 ) through a simple yet effective thermal reduction method. This modification significantly enhances the photocatalytic efficiency of the Pd NC/In 2 O 3 /HCM (donated as PIC) system, achieving an optimal value of 496.89 μmol∙g −1 over 5 h without the need for additional additives, 8.7-fold higher than that of the pristine In 2 O 3 . Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the substantial enhancement in CO 2 photoreduction performance can be attributed to the ultra-low resistance (122 Ω) interfaces within the PIC system, facilitating accelerated transfer of photogenerated electrons. This work provides a strategy for boosting CO 2 photoreduction efficiency by the reduction of interface resistance to promote rapid photogenerated electron migration.

The engineering of photocatalysts with hollow structures is essential for improving the absorption of visible-light irradiation to boost the photocatalytic activity of organic contaminants. This study presents a feasible cavity engineering method for the synthesis of nitrogen-doped In 2 O 3 @carbon spherical structures produced from In-MOF. These spherical structures feature a well-defined central void, achieved through CTAB-assisted aggregation of In 2 O 3 via annealing In-MOF in an air atmosphere. The N-doped In 2 O 3 @carbon photocatalysts were employed for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under visible-light irradiations. The optimized N-doped In 2 O 3 @carbon catalyst (In 2 O 3 -III) exhibited 98 % degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride within 60 min of visible-light irradiation. Hollow cavity engineering may offer several active sites, a reduced band gap, and considerable benefits for the separation of electron-hole (e − /h + ) pairs and light absorption capability. Furthermore, the presence of an optimal concentration of nitrogen and oxygen vacancies in the In 2 O 3 -III synergistically contributed to the improved visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. Several parameters influencing the mineralization of TCH were examined, comprising catalyst type, TCH concentration, initial solution pH, catalyst dosage, inorganic anions, and radical species. Radical capturing tests and electron spin resonance studies indicate that h + and O 2 •- were the principal species engaged in the degradation of TCH.

The development of visible-light-induced photocatalysts is one of the critically important issues because it offers a green and sustainable route for solar energy conversion. Herein, In-doped ZnO@In 2 O 3 hybrid photocatalysts are designed and constructed through a one-pot metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-encapsulation-derived method. The photocatalytic activity of the sample photocatalysts is systematically investigated by photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. The composition of the hybrid photocatalysts is also controlled to find the best photocatalytic activities. Interestingly, using a visible-light irradiation source, the optimized In-doped ZnO@In 2 O 3 photocatalyst shows an H 2 evolution rate of 417 µmol∙g −1 ∙h −1 , which is nearly 20 times higher than that of the In-doped ZnO sample and also exceeds most ZnO-based catalysts ever reported. The enhanced catalytic performance is ascribed to the increased visible-light response and enhanced charge separation efficiency by the synergistic effects of electron-trapped In doping and electron-donated In 2 O 3 coupling. This work presents a promising pathway for fabricating MOFs-encapsulation derived visible-light-driven composites for high photocatalytic performance towards hydrogen evolution.

2-Chloro-4-nitrophenol (2C4NP) is a traditional organic pollutant whose toxicity constitutes a significant threat to both human health and environmental safety. Therefore, developing a method for the accurate detection of 2C4NP in natural environments is imperative. Consequently, we develop a photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on MWCNTs@In2S3/In2O3/GCE in this work. During the construction process, it is discovered that the introduction of MWCNTs accelerated the electron transport rate, which improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in In2S3. Meanwhile, the MWCNTs@In2S3/In2O3 composite materials formed by MWCNTs@In2S3 and In2O3 not only exhibit an S-scheme heterojunction but also preserve the intrinsic advantages of MOFs-derived materials. This synergistic structure endows the composite materials with excellent optoelectronic performance and adsorption capability. Thus, the constructed photoelectrochemical sensing platform demonstrates promising potential for detecting 2C4NP, with a linear detection range from 3 nM to 5 μM. However, compared to some existing platforms, its detection range remains relatively narrow, which may represent an area for future improvement.

In sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASLBs), the development of high-capacity anode materials with stable interfaces to sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is critical. Here, In 2 O 3 is explored as an anode material for ASLBs for the first time, demonstrating exceptional interfacial stability and electrochemical performance. The In 2 O 3 anode, with a substantial mass loading of 7.64 mg cm −2 , sustains a charge-specific capacity of 528.0 mAh g −1 (4.03 mAh cm −2 ) at a current density of 0.76 mA cm −2 over 500 cycles, with a capacity retention of 81.2%. Additionally, it exhibits remarkable long-term cycling stability (2900 cycles) under a high current density of 3.82 mA cm −2 , with an exceptionally low decay rate of 0.016% per cycle. The charge–discharge mechanism of the In 2 O 3 anode is elucidated in detail, revealing that the electrochemical evolution of In 2 O 3 in ASLBs involves not only the alloying/dealloying process of indium (In) but also a conversion reaction between In and Li 2 O. Notably, as cycling progresses, the conversion reaction of In and Li 2 O diminishes, with the reversible alloying/dealloying process becoming predominant. This work offers valuable insights for advancing oxide anode materials in sulfide-based ASLBs. Graphical abstract

The development of sensing materials capable of detecting H 2 S with ultrasensitivity and practicability is essential. To address this need, an Au and Sc co-modification strategy was proposed to boost the gas-sensing sensitivity of In 2 O 3 to H 2 S. In 2 O 3 and a sequence of binary (Au-In 2 O 3 and Sc x In (2-x) O 3 ) and ternary (Au-Sc x In (2-x) O 3 ) nanofibers (NFs) with different compositions were fabricated by electrospinning-calcination. Morphology characteristics revealed that the doping of Sc led to a reduction in the grain size, whereas the modification of Au induced an increase in the surface roughness of the NFs. Notably, after evolving pristine In 2 O 3 to the co-modified composites, the sensors exhibited an appreciable increase in sensitivity to H 2 S (from 0.51/ppm to 4.41/ppm), and ultralow detection limit of 5 ppb (measured) and 0.82 ppb (calculated). Moreover, the optimal Au-Sc x In (2-x) O 3 sensor exhibited preferable practicability, including selectivity (selectivity coefficient > 7), repeatability (RSD < 0.95 %, n = 7), stability (response decreased 4.3 % over 30 days), and moisture resistance (decreased 15 % at 88 % RH). Ultraviolet photo-electron spectroscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy analysis revealed that the enhanced performance was attributed to the formation of Au-Sc x In (2-x) O 3 heterojunctions, the electronic and chemical sensitization effect of Au, and the synergistic effect between Sc and Au.

The preparation and application of supported gold and copper catalysts are fundamentally and practically very important. Herein, we confirm that the Au-Cu promoted In 2 O 3 catalyst demonstrates a significant electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI), which plays a critical role in CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol and leads to significantly improved activity, compared to the mono-metallic Au and Cu promoted In 2 O 3 catalysts. This interaction arises from electron transfer between the oxygen deficient In 2 O 3 support and the bimetallic clusters, rendering both Au and Cu clusters positively charged. The presence of Cu δ+ stabilizes and optimizes the content of oxygen vacancies, leading to a more pronounced positive charge on Au clusters (Au δ+ ). The ability to activate H 2 is thus enhanced. CO adsorption on Au-Cu/In 2 O 3 is also stronger than Au/In 2 O 3 . This results in higher methanol selectivity of Au-Cu/In 2 O 3 , with which CO hydrogenation pathway is taken for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. The enhanced H 2 activation and stronger CO adsorption over Au-Cu/In 2 O 3 are key factors in boosting the activity for methanol formation from CO 2 hydrogenation.

An efficient portable gas sensor was developed to meet the needs of air quality monitoring, for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). In this study, coaxial electrospinning technology was used to synthesize porous nanofibers of indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) composite zinc oxide (ZnO), which are recognized as special semiconductor ceramic materials. The best sample (NFs.1–6) consists of a nanoparticle-based structure with interconnected pores, in contrast to the more compact, tightly bonded nanofibers. This porous structure enhances gas adsorption capacity, improving the sensor’s performance. At 200 °C, the synthesized In 2 O 3 @ZnO (NFs.1–6) nanofibers exhibited a high response value of 171.25 and a fast response time of 5 s to 100 parts per million (ppm) NO 2 . The excellent characteristic is attributed to its uniform structure and n-n homojunction, making the response values 38 times and 98 times that of pure ZnO and pure In 2 O 3 , respectively. Building on the research findings, a smart mask was developed that incorporates the nanofiber sensor to monitor NO 2 concentrations in the air, offering an innovative approach to wearable gas sensor technology by semiconductor ceramic materials.
