Ultrafine design of carbon whisker array @ hollow carbon sphere anode for superior K-storage

Yinshuang Pang,Qingxue Lai,Ningning Chen,Nailu Shen,Hong Chen,Wanying Zhang,Zhi Liu,Luanjie Nie,Jing Zheng

Even though bottom-up strategy has been successfully developed to construct nanocarbon materials from molecule blocks for energy storage applications, elaborate structure manipulation via a facile and scalable method remains a big challenge. Herein, a facile free-radical C–C coupling-based bottom-up strategy was proposed to controllably construct carbon whisker array @ hollow carbon sphere (CWA@HCS) anode from the molecule block of hexabromobenzene (HBB) for superior K-storage. The novel CWA@HCS anode was easily achieved via the controllable catalysis of C–C coupling reaction on the surface of commercial metallic Cu particles. The optimized CWA@HCS anode delivered a high reversible K-storage capacity of 367.6 mAh/g at 50 mA/g, excellent rate capability (155.5 mAh/g at 1000 mA/g), and excellent long-term cycle performance (182.5 mAh/g maintained after 700 cycles at 500 mA/g). In addition, the full cell assembled from CWA@HCS electrode showed excellent cycle performance and rate performance. These excellent K-storage properties should be attributed to the surface capacitive-dominated K-storage mechanism guaranteed by the three-dimensional (3D) array structure. This study provides a basic reference for the design of advanced nanocarbon materials as well as anode materials for potassium ion batteries.

Effects of K doping over ordered mesoporous nickel-alumina catalysts on toluene steam reforming

Yang Du,Shi-Qi Yang,Yun-Jie Li,Zhi-Bin Wang,Xing-Bao Wang,Zhen-Yi Du,Wen-Ying Li

Nickel-based catalysts have been broadly studied for the steam reforming of coal/biomass tar due to their inexpensiveness and good activity. Nevertheless, their industrial application has long been restricted by the deactivation induced by carbon deposition and Ni sintering in the reforming process. Herein, ordered mesoporous nickel-alumina catalysts with varying K contents were prepared. Their performance in steam reforming of toluene as a model compound of tar was evaluated to reveal the effects of K doping. Among them, the catalyst with 2 wt% K loading displayed the best catalytic activity and stability. Experimental and theoretical calculation results suggested that K doping enhances the water adsorption capability of the catalysts, which thereby reduces the amount and graphitization degree of carbon deposits. Moreover, the K doping reduces the acid amount of the support and thereby inhibits the formation of carbon deposits as well. However, K doping does not affect the reaction pathway of the catalysts in toluene steam reforming, and the main reaction intermediates detected with in-situ DRIFTS remain the carbonate groups. Furthermore, the confinement effects of the ordered mesoporous structures inhibit the sintering of Ni particles and the formation of carbon deposits. In addition, the influence of different spatial positions of K on the catalysts was explored. It was found that the K introduction via the one-pot solvent evaporation induced self-assembly method can suppress the loss of K from the catalysts.

A K+-sensitive photonic crystal hydrogel sensor for efficient visual monitoring of hyperkalemia/hypokalemia

Yan-Lin Wang,Xi Wang,Hai-Rong Yu,Ting Liang,Xing-Bin Lv,Chang-Jing Cheng

Potassium ions (K+) play crucial roles in many biological processes. Abnormal K+ levels in the body are usually associated with physiological disorders or diseases, and thus, developing K+-sensitive sensors/devices is of great importance for disease diagnosis and health monitoring. Herein, we report a K+-sensitive photonic crystal hydrogel (PCH) sensor with bright structural colors for efficient monitoring of serum potassium. This PCH sensor consists of a poly(acrylamide-co-N-isopropylacrylamide-co-benzo-15-crown-5-acrylamide) (PANBC) smart hydrogel with embedded Fe3O4 colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs), which could strongly diffract visible light and endow the hydrogel with brilliant structural colors. The rich 15-crown-5 (15C5) units appended on the polymer backbone could selectively bind K+ ions to form stable 2 : 1 [15C5]2/K+ supramolecular complexes. These bis-bidentate complexes served as physical crosslinkers to crosslink the hydrogel and contracted its volume, and thus reduced the lattice spacing of Fe3O4 CPCs and blue-shifted the light diffraction, and finally reported on the K+ concentrations by a color change of the PCH. Our fabricated PCH sensor possessed high K+ selectivity and pH- and thermo-sensitive response performances to K+. Most interestingly, the K+-responding PANBC PCH sensor could be conveniently regenerated via simple alternate flushing with hot/cold water due to the excellent thermosensitivity of the introduced PNIPAM moieties into the hydrogel. Such a PCH sensor provides a simple, low-cost and efficient strategy for visualized monitoring of hyperkalemia/hypokalemia, which will significantly promote the development of biosensors.

Amorphous K-Buserite Microspheres for High-Performance Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries and Hybrid Supercapacitors

Zhi-Qiang Wang,Hong-Ming Chen,Xiao-Dong Liu,Li-Ying Song,Bu-Sheng Zhang,Yun-Guo Yang,Zhao-Cheng Zhang,Qian Li,Tian-Qi Gao,Jing Bai,Woon-Ming Lau,Dan Zhou

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) and Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (AZHSCs) are considered promising energy-storage alternatives to Li-ion batteries due to the attractive merits of low-price and high-safety. However, the lack of suitable cathode materials always hinders their large-scale application. Herein, amorphous K-buserite microspheres (denoted as K-MnO x ) are reported as cathode materials for both AZIBs and AZHSCs, and the energy-storage mechanism is systematically revealed. It is found that K-MnO x is composed of rich amorphous K-buserite units, which can irreversibly be transformed into amorphous Zn-buserite units in the first discharge cycle. Innovatively, the transformed Zn-buserite acts as active materials in the following cycles and is highly active/stable for fast Zn-diffusion and superhigh pseudocapacitance, enabling the achievement of high-efficiency energy storage. In the AZIBs, K-MnO x delivers 306 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 with 102% capacity retention, while in the AZHSCs, it shows 515.0/116.0 F g −1 at 0.15/20.0 A g −1 with 92.9% capacitance retention at 5.0 A g −1 after 20 000 cycles. Besides, the power/energy density of AZHSCs device can reach up to 16.94 kW kg −1 (at 20 A g −1 )/206.7 Wh kg −1 (at 0.15 A g −1 ). This work may provide some references for designing next-generation aqueous energy-storage devices with high energy/power density.

Tröger’s Base (TB)-Based Polyimides as Promising Heat-Insulating and Low-K Dielectric Materials

Jian Lu,Yu Zhang,Jing Li,Meifang Fu,Guoxiang Zou,Shinji Ando,Yongbing Zhuang

The correlations between the molecular structures of four Tröger’s base (TB)-based polyimides (PIs) and two non-TB containing analogues and physical properties including thermal conductivity (λ) and dielectric properties both at low and high frequencies were investigated in detail. The TB-based PI films exhibited low dielectric constants (Dk = 2.25–2.80) at 10 GHz. They possessed much lower λ values (0.035–0.145 W/mK) compared to the commercial PI Kapton (0.240 W/mK). The influences of incorporating TB units into chain backbones on aggregation structures and physical properties of PIs were identified. Incorporating TB units into chain backbones effectively reduced the degree of chain orientation and increased fractional free volume, leading to both low Dk and low λ values for the resulting PI films. Also, introducing TB units enhanced molecular weights, toughness, and glass-transition temperature (Tg) of the resulting PIs. Therefore, the TB-based PIs can be promising heat-insulating and low-k dielectric materials.

Efficient preparation of phenol-enriched bio-oil using cobalt-modified montmorillonite K-10 catalyst

Wenpeng Hong,Yu Zhang,Jiaxing Song,Haipeng Liu,Ling Zhang,Hang Wang,Yan Zhang,Haifeng Jiang

The extraction of phenolic compounds from biomass is an important way to replace chemical synthesis techniques, and catalytic pyrolysis of biomass is an effective method to obtain phenolic compounds with high selectivity. In this work, cobalt-modified montmorillonite K-10(CMT) catalyst was prepared by using cobalt salt and montmorillonite K-10(MMT), and used to catalyze the pyrolysis of corn stalk(CS) to produce phenol-rich bio-oil. The catalytic pyrolysis characteristics reflected by the liquid and gaseous components were compared using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) and online mass spectrometry(online MS), and the catalytic pyrolysis behavior of corn stalk was analyzed by using the thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). The addition of catalyst resulted in the increase of apparent activation energy of pyrolysis process but increased selectivity for phenolic compounds. Compared with the blank sample, the relative content of phenolic compounds in bio-oil increased by 11.99 %, and the selectivity of alkyl-phenols was stronger. In addition, the results also showed that the synthesized catalyst promoted the production of H 2 and CH 4 during the catalytic pyrolysis. The optimum ratio of the prepared catalyst was 6%Co/15%MMT. These works provide an alternative approach to upgrading bio-oil product.

One-step rapid colorimetric detection of K+ using silver nanoparticles modified by crown ether

Yufeng Sun,Shengwen Wang,Fangfang Wang,Hao Zhang,Weiya Huang,Aiguo Wu,Yujie Zhang

Urinary potassium is an important parameter in clinical health diagnosis. Rapid and convenient detection of potassium ions (K+) in urine is essential for personal healthcare and health management. Here, crown ether (4-aminodibenzo-18-crown-6, ADC) modified silver nanoparticles (ADC-Ag NPs) were successfully prepared for one-step rapid colorimetric detection of urinary potassium. The detection mechanism is as follows: due to the matching sizes of the diameter of K+ and the cavity in crown ether 6, K+ is encapsulated between the cavities of two crown ethers, resulting in the clumping of ADC-Ag NPs and the color of the solution being altered. The colorimetric detection method has a fast response and is completed within 20 minutes. It also shows good selectivity and interference immunity. The lowest detectable concentration is 20 μM with the naked eye and 2.16 μM for UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. A good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9931) between the absorption intensity ratio and K+ concentration (0–100 μM) indicates that this colorimetric probe can be used to detect K+. The method was also applied for quantitative analysis of K+ in real urine samples with recovery between 116 and 120%.

Antimicrobial dual ionic-covalent k-carrageenan/carboxymethyl chitosan membranes with robust moisture retention property

Hai-qiang Zhang,Jiale Zhou,Hai Wang,Dongwei Lan,Yan Peng,Zhi Li,Fangyin Dai

To develop an antimicrobial membrane for wound healing, the blended k-carrageenan (KC)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCH) membranes were fabricated through a freeze-drying process together with a dual-ion (Cu 2+ and K + or Cu 2+ and Ca 2+ ) crosslinking approach. The dual-ion crosslinking by Cu 2+ and K + could not only make the membranes compact but could also improve the uptake capacity and mechanical properties of the fabricated membranes. The maximum tensile stress of membranes reached up to 43 MPa and the highest swelling ratio was around 5500%, exhibiting robust moisture retention property. The CMCH and Cu 2+ in blended membranes provided a good antimicrobial property against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, the fabricated membranes showed good cytocompatibility. These results indicated the fabricated KC/CMCH membranes with dual-ion by Cu 2+ and K + have favorable properties and have a great potential for application in wound healing.

K-doped BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.2O3−δ as a promising cathode material for protonic ceramic fuel cells

Qiu Peng,Liu Bo,Wu Lei,Qi Huiying,Tu Baofeng,Li Jian,Jia Lichao

Slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) involving proton transport remains the limiting factor for electrochemical performance of proton-conducting cathodes. To further reduce the operating temperature of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs), developing triple-conducting cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance is required. In this study, K-doped BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2 O 3− δ (BCFZ442) series were developed and used as the cathodes of the PCFCs, and their crystal structure, conductivity, hydration capability, and electrochemical performance were characterized in detail. Among them, Ba 0.9 K 0.1 Co 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2 O 3− δ (K10) cathode has the best electrochemical performance, which can be attributed to its high electron (e − )/oxygen ion (O 2− )/H + conductivity and proton uptake capacity. At 750 °C, the polarization resistance of the K10 cathode is only 0.009 Ω·cm 2 , the peak power density (PPD) of the single cell with the K10 cathode is close to 1 Wcm −2 , and there is no significant degradation within 150 h. Excellent electrochemical performance and durability make K10 a promising cathode material for the PCFCs. This work can provide a guidance for further improving the proton transport capability of the triple-conducting oxides, which is of great significance for developing the PCFC cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance.

Self-preservation effect exceeding 273.2 K by introducing deuterium oxide to form methane hydrate

Jun Chen,Jianjian Wu,Yaosong Zeng,Zhikai Liang,Guangjin Chen,Bei Liu,Zhi Li,Bin Deng

Self-preservation effect of hydrate is an advantage for gas storage by using hydrate-based technology. Unlike focusing on guest molecules in previous publications, deuterium   oxides (D 2 O) were introduced as one of host molecules to form methane hydrate. Methane hydrate dissociated percentage was 92.2% after 12 h of dissociation at 273.7 K without the addition of D 2 O, while the methane hydrate dissociated percentage decreased to 55.2 % with the addition of 30 wt% D 2 O. The methane hydrate dissociated percentage reduced to 15.7% when methane hydrate formed in D 2 O system. The results suggested that the self-preservation effect of methane hydrate was improved to above 273.2 K for the first time since this abnormal phenomenon was found in 1986. The temperature of self-preservation effect for (CH 4  + D 2 O) hydrate was improved at least 3.5 K higher than that for (CH 4  + H 2 O) hydrate. From the simulation results, some (D 2 O + H 2 O) mixed cages with different D 2 O and H 2 O molecules formed, and CH 4 inserted into the mixed cages to form CH 4 hydrate as sI structure. The (D 2 O + H 2 O) mixed cages may explain the self-preservation effect of (CH 4  + D 2 O + H 2 O) hydrate above 273.2 K to some extent. Finally, it was also found from the simulation results that (CH 4  + D 2 O + H 2 O) hydrate not only formed from hydrate/(D 2 O + H 2 O) contact, but also nucleated independently.

Porous carbon-based robust, durable, and flexible electrochemical device for K+ detection in sweat

Tingting Jiang,Bing Yin,Xiaobo Liu,Lihui Yang,Hongyu Pang,Jie Song,Shuo Wu

Ion sensors are attracting attention for real-time ion monitoring in biological fluids, which requires the development of sensitive, stable, flexible, robust and durable ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) and reference electrodes (REs). In this paper, a highly robust and durable ion sensor was prepared by coating polymer membranes on porous carbon electrodes. A high sensitivity of 58.6 mV per decade with a rapid response time of 0.8 s, and a negligible potential drift less than 1.4 mV h−1 were obtained simultaneously. In addition, after six washing cycles, the K+ ion sensors still have an average sensitivity of 53.2 mV per decade. Importantly, the polymer membrane permeated and packed the porous structure tightly, and thus the ion sensors presented outstanding robustness and durability. The Nernst slope of the K+ ion response fluctuated from 60.2 to 57.9 mV per decade between 0° and 60° bending angles. Repeated bending for 8000 cycles did not result in the delamination of the sensing and reference membranes or reduction of the sensitivity (57.4 mV per decade). Furthermore, five kinds of flexible reference electrodes (LEC, bare Ag, bare Ag/AgCl, PVB + NaCl on Ag/AgCl, PVC/agarose + NaCl on Ag/AgCl) were fabricated and evaluated in terms of the sensitivity for Cl− and long-term stability. Finally, the flexible K+ ion sensor was integrated with microfluidic channels and connected to a portable electrochemical workstation to realize the real-time analysis of human sweat.

Phase Equilibrium of the Quaternary System LiBr-Li2SO4-KBr-K2SO4-H2O at 308.15 K

Bin Li,Xinjun Jing,Junsheng Yuan

The phase equilibria of the reciprocal quaternary system LiBr-Li2SO4-KBr-K2SO4-H2O and its ternary sub-systems LiBr-Li2SO4-H2O and KBr-K2SO4-H2O at 308.15 K were studied using the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. Then, the solubility data of the equilibrium solutions were collected, and the phase diagrams were plotted. The phase diagrams of the ternary sub-systems at 308.15 K were compared with those at other temperatures. This study found that the phase diagram of the LiBr-Li2SO4-H2O system at 308.15 K consisted of an invariant point, two solid-phase crystallization regions of Li2SO4·H2O and LiBr·2H2O, and their corresponding solubility curves. The system generated two hydrated salts, which belonged to the hydrate type I phase diagram. The phase diagram of the KBr-K2SO4-H2O system at 308.15 K consisted of an invariant point, two univariant solubility curves, and two solid-phase crystallization regions of KBr and K2SO4, and no solid solution and double salts were formed. Thus, it belonged to a simple co-saturation type phase diagram. In the LiBr-Li2SO4-KBr-K2SO4-H2O system, K2SO4·Li2SO4double salt formed at 308.15 K, and the phase diagram consisted of three invariant points, five crystallization regions, and seven univariant solubility curves. Keywords:lithium bromide;potassium bromide;lithium sulfate;potassium sulfate;phase equilibrium
