Enhanced electrocatalytic OER activity of FeCo LDH by co-modification with Ce and reducing anions

Feng Jiao,Jinzhao Huang,Zehui Liu,Yu Zhang,Xiaolong Deng,Ke Zhang,Guixin Zhao

In this paper, sodium sulfite (Na₂SO₃) and cerium nitrate (Ce(NO₃)₃) were added in the hydrothermal method for the preparation of FeCo LDH, and needle-like Ce-FeCo LDH (NS) catalysts were grown in situ on a carbon cloth. The additions of Na₂SO₃ and Ce(NO₃)₃ regulated the electron transfer of the metal cations in the LDH, and significantly improved the performance of the catalysts. The prepared Ce-FeCo LDH (NS) catalysts exhibited excellent electrochemical properties. The overpotential of OER was 221 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm² in 1 M KOH. The surface structure and catalytic performance of the catalysts were maintained well after 100 h stability test. This study provides a new idea for the improvement and design of OER catalysts based on FeCo LDH, which is an important reference for clean energy research.

Multi-structured and ligand-modified NiFe LDH with self-optimization for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Zi-Ye Liu,Jiu-Jiu Ge,Ji-Ming Hu

Nickel foam (NF) self-supported NiFe LDH electrodes have been widely studied for their excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. However, the performance of electrodes synthesized via conventional electrodeposition or hydrothermal methods are still unsatisfactory owing to their insufficient specific surface area and suboptimal activity. In this study, we report NF-supported NiFe LDH electrodes directly derived from NF-supported-bimetallic MOF-74(NiFe). The as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibited a hierarchical structure and inherited the molecular level porosity of the MOF-74 precursor. The as-prepared electrode underwent self-optimization during the OER process, significantly increasing the electrochemical active surface area and providing numerous catalytic sites. In addition, the 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (DHTP) ligand released from MOF-74 during its dissociation chemically modified NiFe LDH. This ligand promoted the formation of Ni(III) and resisted Cl− corrosion. Thus, LDH-MOF74@NF outperformed almost all previously reported NiFe LDH@NF electrodes, exhibiting excellent OER performance and high durability in KOH and KOH/NaCl solutions with overpotentials of 244 mV and 254 mV at 100 mA cm−2, respectively.

Zhao Ji-wei,Wei Zhi-qiang,Wang Can,Zhou Mei-pan,Lu Cheng-gong

The Co-based organic skeleton was combined with graphene oxide (GO) as a precursor, Ni 2+ hydrolysis etching was introduced, and finally, NiCo-LDH/GO was obtained. The final composite electrode material NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO was obtained by high-temperature vulcanization. The introduction of MOFs and rGO significantly increased the specific surface area of the material and made it have excellent electrochemical properties. The specific capacitance of the composite NiCo 2 S 4 /20rGO reaches an astonishing 272.5 mAh g −1 when the current density is 1 A g −1 . In addition, at a large current of 10 A g −1 , the specific capacitance of the material can also reach 139.5 mAh g −1 , and after a long cycle of 5000 cycles at such a current density, the capacity remains at the original 73.2%. With NiCo 2 S 4 /20rGO electrode material as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, the hybrid supercapacitor is assembled. At an energy density of 56.9 Wh kg −1 , its power density reaches an excellent 799 W kg −1 , and it still has a capacity retention rate of 74% at a current density of 10 A g −1 . The excellent properties of composites demonstrated in this work open up new possibilities for high-quality energy storage devices.

Construction of superhydrophobic CoZnAl-LDH coating on anodized aluminum surfaces to enhance corrosion and wear resistance

Guixiang Wang,Qizi Wu,Maomao Guo,Shilong Zhang,Qiuyan Luo,Hao Yu,Xuyan Guo,Fuqiu Ma,Haining Feng,Ruizhi Wu,Boris Krit

In this study, a novel CoZnAl-LDH coating was synthesized in-situ on anodized aluminum through a hydrothermal method without introducing trivalent metal salts. Subsequently, a vanadate-intercalated LDH-VS coating was fabricated via ion exchange and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) self-assembly, which integrated long-term corrosion resistance, friction reduction, and superhydrophobicity into a single coating. The morphology and structure of the coatings were investigated using SEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS. The coating performance was evaluated through scratch tests, contact angle, electrochemical, and friction wear tests. The results demonstrated that the contact angle of the LDH-VS increased from 26° to 154° and remained above 120° even after prolonged immersion, exhibiting outstanding self-cleaning and antifouling properties. After 28 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the corrosion current density of LDH-VS decreased by four orders of magnitude to 8.09 × 10 −9 A·cm −2 compared to bare aluminum alloy and the microstructure remained intact, indicating excellent long-term corrosion resistance. Friction tests confirmed the superior friction reduction of the modified coating, with the average friction coefficient of LDH-VS decreasing to 0.28, significantly lower than that of the aluminum alloy. Scratch tests also verified the coating's excellent adhesion strength. This study provides new insights into the development and application of LDH in superhydrophobicity, long-term corrosion protection, and wear resistance.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Hydrotreating Activity of NiW Presulfurized Catalysts Prepared via a Tetrathiotungstate-Intercalated NiAl LDH

Hao Wang,Fan Yang,Zhendong Yang,Han Yang,Yan Wu

A tetrathiotungstate-intercalated NiAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized and then calcined under N2 at various temperatures to prepare a series of NiW presulfurized hydrotreating catalysts. Upon calcination, WS42– in the interlayer decomposes into WS3 and then WS2, releasing sulfur to sulfurize nickel in the sheets. The property and activities of catalysts for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene and hydrodearomatization (HDA) of tetralin are dependent on the calcination temperature. At 300 °C, WS3 can be well maintained, offering highly active hydrogenation sites S22– and superior HDA activity. As the temperature increases up to 500 °C, WS3 converts into WS2, while nickel sulfides migrate to the edge of WS2 to form NiWS phases with high HDS activity. LDH-based presulfurized catalysts can achieve fully sulfurized and well-dispersed tungsten species even at high tungsten loadings and can retain more WS3 even at high temperatures because of the peculiar properties of LDHs. Therefore, they show better HDS and superior HDA activities over an oxidic NiW LDH-based catalyst (LDO) and an alumina-supported NiWS presulfurized catalyst (NiWS/Al2O3). The optimized catalyst shows 1.59 and 1.05 times higher HDS activity than LDO and NiWS/Al2O3 while 2.05 and 1.77 times higher HDA activity than LDO and NiWS/Al2O3, respectively. It also shows better HDS and HDA activity for a real diesel than a NiCoMoW/Al2O3 commercial catalyst.

Bifunctional NiAlFe LDH-coated membrane for oil-in-water emulsion separation and photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic

Yuqing Zong,Shuaishuai Ma,Jinjuan Xue,Jiandong Gu,Mingxin Wang

A new NiAlFe layered double hydroxide/polydopamine/polyvinylidene fluoride (NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF) membrane was fabricated by in-situ growth of LDH on the PDA modified PVDF membrane. The as-prepared membrane possesses a nano/microscale rough structural surface and displays the superior wettability of superhydrophilicity in air and underwater superoleophobicity. Combining the favourable features of superwettability and hierarchical rough structure, the NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF membrane could effectively separate a series of oil-in-water emulsions with high efficiency (>99%) and high permeation flux (925–1913 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ). Besides, owing to the light harvest ability of NiAlFe LDH, the relevant membrane also can be applied as a photocatalysis paper for the light-driven treatment of antibiotic residue in aqueous solution. In which, NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF membrane can effectively degrade typical antibiotic tetracycline within 20 min under UV light irradiation, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic activity. In addition, cyclic experiments demonstrate that NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF membrane has excellent stability and reusability both in oil-in-water emulsion separation and photocatalytic reaction. In general, the findings of this research demonstrate that photo-response LDH modified membranes have potential multiple applications in wastewater treatment .

Improving the Catalytic Efficiency of NiFe-LDH/ATO by Air Plasma Treatment for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Lei Chong,Li Wenzheng,Wang Gongwei,Zhuang Lin,Lu Juntao,Xiao Li

Developing efficient catalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction(OER) is important for water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Although NiFe oxides are considered as potentially applicable catalysts in the alkaline media, there are still a limited numbers of researches working on membrane electrode assembly(MEA) fed with pure water due to their poor electrical conductivity. In this work, antimony doped tin oxide(ATO) has been employed as conductive supports where NiFe layered double hydroxide uniformly dispersed[named NiFe-LDH(layered double hydroxide)/ATO]. The catalysts have been synthesized by a one-step co-precipitation method, and then NiFe-LDH/ATO-air plasma was obtained through mild air plasma treatment. According to XPS analysis, binding energies of Ni 2 p and Fe 2 p were shifted negatively. Moreover, a new signal of low oxygen coordination appeared on O 1 s spectrum after air plasma treatment. These XPS results indicated that oxygen vacancies(O v ) were generated after air plasma treatment. Electrochemical measurement indicated that the vacancy-rich NiFe-LDH/ATO-air plasma exhibited better performance than NiFe-LDH/ATO not only in 1 mol/L KOH solutions but also in an alkaline polymer electrolyte water electrolyzer(APEWE) fed with deionized water. This work provides a feasible way to design practical catalysts used in electrochemical energy conversion systems by choosing corrosion resistance supports and defect engineering.

Nitrate intercalation suppresses Fe active-site dissolution in NiFe-LDH for durable industrial alkaline oxygen evolution

Zhang Yingzhen,Han Shibo,Huang Jianying,Cai Weilong,Ng Yun Hau,Chen I-Wen Peter,Lai Yuekun

The practical deployment of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is fundamentally limited by the instability of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts caused by continuous dissolution of active metal sites under harsh operating conditions. Herein, we report a strategy for stabilizing NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) via weak Brönsted base intercalation, which tunes the interlayer spacing and interfacial electronic structure. Through the intercalation of weakly basic nitrate anions (NO 3 − ), a nitrate-modified NiFe-LDH (NiFe-NO 3 ) is constructed, which effectively suppresses Fe dissolution by stabilizing high-valence Ni/Fe species during operation. As a result, NiFe-NO 3 exhibits exceptional durability, maintaining stable operation at 1000 mA cm −2 in 30 wt% KOH at 80 °C for over 500 h with an ultralow degradation rate of 0.04 mV·h −1 (retention rate of electrochemical activity was 99.1%), representing a ∼12-fold lifetime improvement over pristine NiFe-LDH. Mechanistic studies reveal that NO 3 − intercalation induces synergistic effects including slight interlayer expansion, electronic redistribution, and regulation of interlayer Brönsted basicity, which collectively stabilize high-valence Ni/Fe species and preserve the oxyhydroxide active phase during OER. This work demonstrates that Brönsted base intercalation provides an effective strategy to suppress active-site dissolution and offers new insights for the design of durable OER catalysts for industrial alkaline water electrolysis (AWE).

LDH-Enhanced Degradation of PFASs: Influence of Reactant Configurations within Nanoconfined Spaces on Hydrated Electron Transport

Jingyi Feng,Hao Lu,Jing Hua,Na Sun,Jing Jiang,Kun Qian,Qi Yu,Anfei He,Haoting Tian

Hydrated electron (eaq–) reduction is an efficient pathway for degrading per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Nanoconfined spaces can shield eaq– from quenchers in bulk solution and shorten diffusion distances, thereby enhancing utilization efficiency. However, the role of eaq– precursors and PFASs configurations within nanoconfined domains in governing eaq– transport remains unclear. In this study, polyindole (Pind) was synthesized within layered double hydroxide (LDH) interlayers as an eaq– precursor, while perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was simultaneously enriched through electrostatic interaction. Although the eaq– yield increased with Pind loading, the PFOA degradation rate followed a unimodal trend, reaching a maximum at 27.2% Pind loading, where complete degradation was achieved within 3 h. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed stronger hydrophobic interactions among Pind molecules than between Pind and PFOA, leading to a configuration where PFOA surrounded Pind aggregates. With increasing Pind loading, this arrangement forced more eaq– to travel longer distances to attack C–F bonds, reducing their utilization efficiency despite higher overall yields. This “yield-transport” self-antagonism underscores the critical role of nanoconfined configurations in eaq– transport and utilization efficiency and provides mechanistic insights for the rational design and optimization of nanoconfinement systems.

A Dual Strategy of Viscosity Modulation and Directional Freezing toward Multifunctional ZnMgAl-LDH/Chitosan Hybrid Aerogels

Zhi Yang,Biao Li,Zhiwen Liu,Qian Xu,Mengyao Li,Daying Zhang,Yunning Chen,Jingbin Han

Aerogels, as highly efficient thermal insulation materials, exhibit significant potential for applications in building exterior insulation, power battery thermal protection, and aerospace thermal management. However, conventional polymer aerogels possess inherent limitations in thermal insulation performance, mechanical compressive strength, and flame-retardant safety, which impede their widespread engineering adoption. Herein, we propose a synergistic fabrication strategy integrating directional freezing and viscosity modulation. By precisely regulating the temperature gradient and incorporating layered double hydroxides (ZnMgAl-LDH) to tune the viscosity of hydrogel precursors, we enhanced the viscous resistance during ice crystal growth, thereby refining ice crystal dimensions. A honeycomb-like ZnMgAl-LDH/chitosan (CS) inorganic–organic hybrid aerogel with tunable pore size distribution was successfully constructed. The superlattice interface of ZnMgAl-LDH and the organic–inorganic hybrid interface synergistically reinforce phonon scattering (covering both long and short wavelengths), effectively suppressing solid thermal conduction and significantly improving the aerogel’s thermal insulation performance. Compared with pure CS aerogel, the hybrid aerogel with optimized pore size displays a lower thermal conductivity (0.03735–0.03936 W/(m·K)) and reduces the surface temperature by 6.9 °C under identical conditions. Moreover, the honeycomb microstructure endows the hybrid aerogel with excellent compressive resilience, retaining 72.4% stress after 50 compression cycles and achieving a compressive modulus 9 times higher than that of pure CS aerogel. Its flame-retardant performance is remarkably enhanced, with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) increasing from 21.5% to 41.4% (meeting high flame-retardant standards) and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) decreasing by 74.9%. Additionally, the hybrid aerogel exhibits superior hydrophobicity and environmental durability, highlighting its great potential for practical engineering applications.

Synergy of Ru and NiAl-LDH for efficient selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds under visible light

Ye Cai,Jingjing Zhang,Yilei Zhang,Jinghua Sun,Mengting Gao,Pengqi Zhu

The Ru/NiAl-LDH catalyst was designed for the selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds under visible light irradiation and mild conditions (55 °C, atmospheric H₂), and it achieved 99% conversion of phenol with 99% selectivity to cyclohexanol. XPS and DFT calculations confirmed that Ni 2+ in the NiAl-LDH support donates electrons to the Ru center, creating an electron-rich Ru site that enhances H 2 activation. In situ DRIFT studies verified that visible-light irradiation promotes the heterolytic dissociation and adsorption of H 2 on Ru active sites. Additionally, surface hydroxyl groups on the NiAl-LDH facilitate phenol adsorption and concentration near active sites. The catalyst demonstrated broad applicability to substituted phenolic compounds and excellent recyclability over multiple cycles. The synergistic effect between the electron-rich Ru sites and the hydroxyl groups on the NiAl-LDH surface ensures highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol.

NiFe-PBA seed-layer induced growth of NiFe-LDH nanosheets for efficient aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Yi Li,Yong Tang,Yujing Wang,Junyin Chen,Chun Huang,Jianwei Zhao,Lirong Qin

In this study, a single-crystalline NiFe-PBA film was first electrodeposited onto a nickel foam substrate, followed by a secondary electrodeposition step to grow NiFe-LDH nanosheets on the film. This composite structure facilitates electron transfer from NiFe-LDH to NiFe-PBA, thereby enhancing the electrical conductivity of the electrode material. Meanwhile, the high specific surface area of NiFe-LDH nanosheets provides more active sites. As a result, the fabricated aqueous zinc-ion battery achieves a specific capacity of 133.5 mAh/g at a current density of 0.3 A/g. In addition, the capacitance contribution of the NiFe-PBA electrode material was only 6%, while that of the NiFe-PBA@NiFe-LDH electrode material increased to 18% at a sweep rate of 10 mV/s. These findings demonstrate that the NiFe-PBA@NiFe-LDH composite is a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, offering a novel strategy for the development of high-performance cathodes in this field.
