Ionogels are considered promising electrolytes for safe lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their low flammability, good thermal stability, and wide electrochemical stability window. Conventional ionic liquid-based ionogels, however, face two main challenges; poor mechanical property and low Li-ion transfer number. In this work, a novel solvate ionogel electrolyte (SIGE) based on an organic–inorganic double network (DN) is designed and fabricated through nonhydrolytic sol–gel reaction and in situ polymerization processes. The unprecedented SIGE possesses high toughness (bearing the deformation under the pressure of 80 MPa without damage), high Li-ion transfer number of 0.43, and excellent Li-metal compatibility. As expected, the LiFePO 4 /Li cell using the newly developed SIGE delivers a high capacity retention of 95.2% over 500 cycles, and the average Coulombic efficiency is as high as 99.8%. Moreover, the Ni-rich LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)/Li cell based on the modified SIGE achieves a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.4%, which outperforms previous solid/quasi-solid-state NCM811-based LIBs. Interestingly, the SIGE-based pouch cells are workable under extreme conditions (e.g., severely deforming or clipping into segments). In terms of those unusual features, the as-obtained SIGE holds great promise for next-generation flexible and safe energy-storage devices.

Tetraborate pillared Li–Al layered double hydroxide was synthesized for the first time by a mechano-hydrothermal process in which gibbsite (Al(OH) 3 ) sample was first activated by a ball milling, followed by hydrothermal treatment with Li 2 B 4 O 7 in water at 95°C. Activation of gibbsite Al(OH) 3 induced by mechanochemical process was essential for the formation of thin disk-like Li–Al LDH intercalated with borate anion. When in excess the activated Al(OH) 3 was transformed into bayerite phase during the hydrothermal process.

W-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 electrolytes with composition of Li 7-2x La 3 Zr 2-x W x O 12 (LLZWO, x = 0-0.55) were prepared by conventional solid state reaction. The incorporation of W proves beneficial to stabilization of cubic phase and densification of the ceramic, resulting in relative density of 96% and ionic conductivity of 6.6 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C. Further analysis indicates that the LLZWO is not only chemically but also electrochemically (at least up to 4.5 V) stable against Li metal anodes. The batteries consisting of Li/LLZWO/Electrolyte-soaked separator/LiNi 0.33 Mn 0.33 Co 0.33 O 2 at 25 °C exhibit the capacity of 142 mAh g −1 at a constant current of 15 mA g −1 at the first discharge, which could run for 20 cycles with capacity retention of 94%. These results indicate that the W-doped LLZO ceramics are promising electrolytes for solid state lithium ion batteries.

Hollow ordered porous carbon spheres (HOPCS) with a hierarchical structure were prepared by templating with hollow ordered mesoporous silica spheres (HOMSS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that HOPCS exhibited a spherical hollow morphology. High-resolution TEM, small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) and N 2 sorption measurements confirmed that HOPCS inversely replicated the unconnected hexagonal-stacked pore structure of HOMSS, and possessed ordered porosity. HOPCS exhibited a higher storage capacity for Li + ion battery (LIB) of 527.6 mA h/g, and good cycling performance. A large capacity loss during the first discharge–charge cycle was found attributed to the high content of micropores. The cycling performance was derived from the hierarchical structure.

Li-doped MgO nanoplates were prepared by a sol–gel technique using magnesium nitrate hexahydrate and lithium nitrate as starting materials. The structures and morphologies of the as-obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The influence of lithium doping on the antibacterial properties of nano-MgO was also investigated by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and bactericidal efficacy against Escherichia coli ( E. coli , ATCC 25922). It can be concluded that an appropriate amount of lithium doping can significantly enhance the antibacterial activity of nano-MgO, which can be attributed to an increase of defect concentration (oxygen vacancy) and basicity of nano-MgO, in favor of the generation and stabilization of active oxygen in MgO solution.

Ba(1-2x)LixAlxTiO3 (x = 0, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 mol%) ceramics were prepared by a conventional sintering method. The effects of Li+ and Al3+ content on the crystalline structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BT ceramic were investigated. A better incorporation of Li+ and Al3+ ions recently occurs in our system without any impurity at x≤1.5 mol%. Ba(1-2x)LixAlxTiO3 ceramic can generate a large piezoelectric constant of d33 = 276 pC/N at x = 1.5 mol%. According to the dielectric properties results, the high piezoelectricity is possible from the suppressed energy barrier of second-like order transition induced by the incorporation of Li+ and Al3+ ions.

In this study, we introduced a solvent-free mechanochemical route to synthesize Li–Al layered double hydroxide through a two-step grinding of LiOH and Al(OH) 3 , in which the mixture powder with Li/Al molar ratio at 1/2 was first dry ground for 2 h and then wet ground for another 1 h with water addition without any heating operation. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The products possessed highly crystalline of Li–Al LDH phase with no evident impure phases, presenting an easy and effective preparation of Li–Al LDH by using solvent-free mechanochemical approach.

Ionogel electrolytes based on gel scaffolds and ionic liquids (ILs) have garnered widespread attention for their processing compatibility, non-flammability, and exceptional thermal/electrochemical properties. While there have been many studies demonstrating the effectiveness of the bisalt approach in stabilizing lithium metal anode , the precise impact of skeleton-constrained dual-anion ionogels on interface modulation remains somewhat obscured and deserves further attention. Herein, we formulate a Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO)-incorporated dual-anion ionogel to reveal the solvation chemistry in the presence of LLZTO and detail the Li + transport mechanism and effect on the interfacial chemistries of Li-metal. The impact of inorganic substances on the solvation structure in IL-based solid electrolytes and their role in forming the SEI layer on lithium metal was unveiled. To be specific, the introduction of fillers exert a selective modulating influence on the anions species in the Li + -solvated shell and fine-tunes the local Li + environment, thereby fostering a more robust interfacial layer. Modified ion environment in ionogels enables a preferable shift from vehicular to structural Li + transport, whereby a high Li ion conductivity (1.24×10 −3 S/cm) and high Li ion transference number of 0.42 is achieved. The synergistic solvent coordination and adjustment of the electrode-electrolyte interface enable the LiFePO 4 |PIL-10|Li cells to cycle steadily with capacity retention of 95.4 % after 500 cycles at 1C and 25 °C. The strategy of promoting transport mechanisms holds promise for designing the next-generation solid-state lithium metal batteries with high energy density .

The discovery of Nb-W-O materials years ago marks the milestone of charging a lithium-ion battery in minutes. Nevertheless, for many applications, charging lithium-ion battery within one minute is urgently demanded, the bottleneck of which largely lies in the lack of fundamental understanding of Li + storage mechanisms in these materials. Herein, by visualizing Li + intercalated into representative Nb 16 W 5 O 55 , we find that the fast-charging nature of such material originates from an interesting rate-dependent lattice relaxation process associated with the Jahn-Teller effect. Furthermore, in situ electron microscopy further reveals a directional, [010]-preferred Li + transport mechanism in Nb 16 W 5 O 55 crystals being the “bottleneck” toward fast charging that deprives the entry of any desolvated Li + through the prevailing non-(010) surfaces. Hence, we propose a machine learning-assisted interface engineering strategy to swiftly collect desolvated Li + and relocate them to (010) surfaces for their fast intercalation. As a result, a capacity of ≈ 116 mAh g −1 (68.5% of the theoretical capacity) at 80 C (45 s) is achieved when coupled with a Li negative electrode.

MXenes are promising cathodes for Li–CO2 batteries owing to their high electrical conductivity and efficient CO2 activation function. However, the effects of adsorption and electronic structures of MXene on the full life cycle of Li–CO2 batteries have been rarely investigated. Here, we employ a coregulation approach to enhance the adsorption–decomposition of lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) by introducing Zn and Cl surface groups onto the Ti3C2 MXene (Zn–Ti3C2Cl2) catalyst. The incorporation of Cl surface groups enhances Li2CO3 adsorption on the MXene catalyst surface, resulting in the formation of small-sized and uniform Li2CO3. Additionally, the introduction of Zn shifts the d-band centers of titanium and promotes CO2 evolution reaction (CO2ER) activity, thereby facilitating the decomposition of discharge products. As a result, the Li–CO2 battery based on the Zn–Ti3C2Cl2 catalyst exhibits an ultralow overpotential (0.72 V) at 200 mA g–1 and stable cycling for up to 1500 h. This work validates the efficacy of promoting reversibility in Li–CO2 batteries by adjusting the adsorption-decomposition process.

Li-CO₂ batteries promise ultrahigh theoretical energy densities but face efficiency limitations owing to the sluggish decomposition of stable Li 2 CO 3 . Redirecting the redox pathway toward Li 2 C 2 O 4 overcomes this challenge, but its metastability leads to facile conversion to Li 2 CO 3 during discharge. Herein, subsurface electronic confinement is engineered in Mo-based catalysts, leveraging electron-deficient boron (B) as electron traps in the subsurface atomic layers to tailor their interfacial electronic landscapes. This design elevates the Mo d-band and intensifies the hybridization between the Mo d-orbitals and O p-orbitals of oxalate. Strengthening the Mo-O interaction stabilizes Li 2 C 2 O 4 against decomposition. The highly reversible and stable redox chemistry enabled by MoB results in an exceptional cycling stability and energy efficiency across a wide temperature range, with an expanded practical viability. At 70 µA cm −2 , the MoB-based battery is cycled for >1400 h with a high energy efficiency of >85%. The energy efficiency even remains at >90% for ≈150 h at a high temperature (90 °C). This study pioneers a material design framework for use in stabilizing metastable products within Li-CO 2 batteries, advancing their applicabilities in extreme environments, such as deep-earth exploration, by revealing the role of subsurface charge redistribution in steering reaction pathways.

Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries are considered an important candidate for the next generation of energy storage systems due to their ultra-high theoretical energy density (11 586 mA h g−1), but their slow kinetic reactions, high overpotential and cyclic instability seriously limit their practical applications. In this study, sulfur modified Mo2C (S@Mo2C) cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis by sulfur (S) doping to optimize the electronic structure and catalytic activity of Mo2C (Mo2C). Experiments show that S@Mo2C exhibits significantly improved electrochemical performance compared to commercial Mo2C: its specific capacity is up to 3955 mA h g−1 (commercial material only 508 mA h g−1), the charge and discharge overpotential is reduced to 0.26 V (53.6%), and the capacity retention rate remains 77.8% after 250 cycles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the introduction of sulfur induced the formation of a heterostructure of MoS2/MoS3 in the Mo2C lattice, which enhanced the conductivity and oxygen reduction/precipitation (ORR/OER) activity of the material. In addition, sulfur doping promotes the formation of highly conductive amorphous Li2O2 and effectively inhibits the accumulation of insulating ring Li2O2, thus significantly improving the cycle stability and energy efficiency of the battery. This study provides a new structural regulation strategy for the design of high efficiency lithium oxygen battery catalysts.
