Breaking the pH limitation by Mo modulated amorphous medium-entropy alloys as efficient advanced oxidation catalysts

Xilin Wu,Shun-Xing Liang,Lingjie Jia,Yufeng Liu,Yuexian Huang,Yujing Liu,Liang-Yu Chen,Yuanzheng Yang,Pingjun Tao

The inherent limitations of conventional metallic glass (MG) catalysts in adapting to complex water environments over a wide pH range stem from their monotonic active site, which is incapable of simultaneously fulfilling multiple functional purposes. Herein, we overcome the narrow range of pH adaptability of existing advanced oxidation catalysts by designing a series of quinary FeCoNiMoB medium-entropy alloys in amorphous structure (referred to as A-MEAs). In particular, the slight modulation of Mo to obtain Fe 25 Co 25 Ni 25 Mo 0.5 B 24.5 A-MEA with highest Gibbs free energy achieves a complete degradation of pollutants both at acidic and alkaline conditions in 10 min. This performance surpasses that of most traditional MGs and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) constrained by the composition limits for entropy maximization. Further insights reveal that in both cases, the multi-site synergistic effects of Mo-driven fast electron transfer of M (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) as active sites and surface-mediated reaction cycles of M 2 + /M 3+ contribute to the accelerated transformation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from peroxydisulfate (PDS) and the remarkable catalytic performance of A-MEAs. The radical evolution demonstrates that SO 4 ·‾ plays a major role under acidic conditions while O 2 ·‾ dominates the catalytic reactions under alkaline conditions. Accordingly, this work aims to fill the gap of A-MEAs for catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants and provide the design strategy of novel MEA catalysts.

Superaerophobic Ultrathin Ni–Mo Alloy Nanosheet Array from In Situ Topotactic Reduction for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Qian Zhang,Pengsong Li,Daojin Zhou,Zheng Chang,Yun Kuang,Xiaoming Sun

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has prospect to becoming clean and renewable technology for hydrogen production and Ni–Mo alloy is among the best HER catalysts in alkaline electrolytes. Here, an in situ topotactic reduction method to synthesize ultrathin 2D Ni–Mo alloy nanosheets for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is reported. Due to its ultrathin structure and tailored composition, the as-synthesized Ni–Mo alloy shows an overpotential of 35 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with a Tafel slope of 45 mV decade −1 , demonstrating a comparable intrinsic activity to state-of-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. Besides, the vertically aligned assemble structure of the 2D NiMo nanosheets on conductive substrate makes the electrode “superaerophobic,” thus leading to much faster bubble releasing during HER process and therefore shows faster mass transfer behavior at high current density as compared with drop drying Pt/C catalyst on the same substrate. Such in situ topotactic conversion finds a way to design and fabricate low-cost, earth-abundant non-noble metal based ultrathin 2D nanostructures for electrocatalytic issues.

Polyhedron BiVO4 co-doped by Mo and Y for visible light-driven photocatalytic overall water splitting

Wang Yifan,Wang Lele,Li Qi,Wu Jianning,Meng Guihua,Yang Shengchao,Liu Zhiyong,Tai Yanlong,Liu Jichang

Photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS) is a promising route for converting solar energy into green and sustainable energy. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal approach to fabricate polyhedron BiVO 4 by Mo and Yco-doping (MYB) photocatalysts with suitable band gap for POWS. The MYB exhibited enhanced visible light-driven POWS activities in comparison with that of as-prepared BiVO 4 , Y-BiVO 4 and M-BiVO 4 , with the maximum H 2 and O 2 evolution rate of 34.7 and 17.4 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 , respectively. The optimum activity of the catalyst was controlled by adjusting Mo content of MYB. The photodeposition of Pt shows that there are special separation reduction and oxidation centers on the surface of MYB. Electrochemical experiments further confirmed the enhanced charge separation of MYB. MYB photocatalyst has small particle size, unique polyhedral structure, large specific surface area and high (103) and (200) surface exposure, thus improving POWS performance, high electron transfer efficiency and effective separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Because of the doping of Mo and Y elements, the electronic structure of the catalyst is altered, enhancing light absorption and reducing the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pair. The current study revealed that the MYB products could serve as cost-effective and stable photocatalysts for POWS. Graphical Abstract

Surface reconstructed layer with bulk high-valence Mo doping to achieve long-life LiMn2O4 cathode material

Wangqiong Xu,Beituo Liu,Shubiao Xia,Lijuan Chen,Ruijuan Qi,Qiling Li,Shimei Guo,Feixiang Cheng,Rong Huang,Zhe Li

Mo doping plays a striking role in the stability enhancement of LiMn 2 O 4 cathode materials. However, the underlying microscopic mechanism is still unclear. Here, we elucidate that the relationship between the atomic position of Mo doping in LiMn 2 O 4 and the stability enhancement of Mo-doped LiMn 2 O 4 by utilizing the spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM). It exhibits that the part of Mo 6+ ions occupy empty Mn 16c site to form a surface reconstructed layer of rock-salt like phase on the outermost surface and other Mo 6+ ions dope into the Mn octahedral 16d sites to form LiMo x Mn 2-x O 4 in bulk, which is beneficial for inhibiting the parasitic side reactions. Concomitantly, this dual modification of bulk structure and surface can significantly enhance electrode reversibility and Li + diffusion. As a result, excellent long cycling stability of the as-designed optimal LiMo 0.01 Mn 1.99 O 4 after 1500 cycles with 61.61 % capacity retention at 10 C (1 C = 148 mAh g −1 ) is presented, with an initial discharge capacity of 88.30 mAh g −1 . Our research provides a clever approach for regulating the surface structure/bulk architecture in LiMn 2 O 4 cathode materials.

Constructing crystalline NiCo2O4/amorphous MoNiCo-LDH through high valence Mo doping for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors

Juan Lei,Yan Zhang,Yujing Wang,Xiaoli Ren,Lijun Cheng,Qinqin He,Shuang Wang

In this work, high valence Mo was introduced to prepare amorphous MNC-LDH (MoNiCo-LDH) for constructing crystalline NCO/amorphous MNC-LDH (crystalline NiCo2O4/amorphous MoNiCo-LDH) composite. The prepared sample exhibited a three-dimensional pompom-like structure composed of ultrathin nanoflakes and a hybrid interface between crystalline and amorphous phase, which benefited good electrochemical performance. The synthesized material showed a specific capacity of 841 C/g at 1 A/g, while retaining 82.3% of its initial capacity at 20 A/g. The assembled NCO/MNC-LDH//AC HSC device exhibited an energy density of 58 Wh/kg when the power density was 850 W/kg. It is noteworthy that even at a power density of 8500 W/kg, an energy density of 37.1 Wh/kg could be sustained. The NCO/MNC-LDH//AC retained 76.3% of its initial specific capacitance and 100% coulombic efficiency after 20000 consecutive charge and discharge cycles, demonstrating excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the ability of two HSCs connected in series to operate small fans and light up LED lights in various colors indicated the practical applications potential. Therefore, the synthesized NCO/MNC-LDH in this work is a favorable candidate material for supercapacitors, which has guiding significance for designing crystalline/amorphous composite materials for energy storage applications.

Mo-doped Ni/NiO as a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Zhong Wang,Xinjia Tan,Chuhan Wang,Guojian Li,Shuang Yuan

Ni/NiO is regarded as an ideal candidate material to replace noble metal catalysts due to its good corrosion resistance and excellent hydrogen evolution activity. However, the poor stability of Ni/NiO catalyst in the process of long-term water electrolysis limits its large-scale application. In this study, a facile hydrothermal method was used to successfully synthesize highly active and stable nanoparticulate Mo–Ni/NiO catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) shows that Mo doping can optimize the charge transfer of Ni/NiO, reduce the d-band center and accelerate the H* dissociation from the catalyst surface. COMSOL numerical simulation further confirmed that the granular structure can enhance the ion concentration and promote H 2 generation. Electrochemical tests showed that the overpotential of Mo–Ni/NiO was only 45 mV when the current density was 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution, which was much lower than 158 mV of Ni/NiO. Furthermore, Mo–Ni/NiO exhibited superior stability when operated at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for 150 h with a reduction of overpotential of only 2 mV. This work provides a simple method for improving the HER activity of catalysts with Mo doping, which provides a new idea for designing catalysts with high activity, excellent stability and low cost.

Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance of Graphdiyne-Alkyne Phosphating Mo–Metal-Organic Frameworks Heterojunction

Meijuan Ding,Mei Li,Jingzhi Wang,Zhiliang Jin

Herein, the application of graphdiyne (GDY) in photocatalytic splitting of water and hydrogen evolution is explored. In this article, GDY is prepared by ball milling using calcium carbide as raw material, and it is compounded with phosphating Mo–metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), to explore the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance and hydrogen evolution mechanism of composite catalysts. In the results, it is shown that the P–Mo–MOFs (PMF)/G-25 composite photocatalyst has the best hydrogen evolution activity, and the hydrogen evolution rate is highest at pH = 9, reaching 1668.5 μmol g −1 h −1 . Through the four-cycle hydrogen evolution cycle stability test, the PMF/G-25 composites still has good hydrogen evolution stability. It is shown that the combination of phosphating Mo–MOFs and GDY can enhance the hydrogen evolution activity and has excellent hydrogen evolution performance. In the Mott–Schottky test, it is found that PMF and GDY are n-type semiconductors. The conduction and valence values are −0.56 and 1.10 eV for GDY, and −0.68 and 0.97 eV for PMF, respectively. The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is analyzed, and it is speculated that S-Scheme heterojunction is formed between PMF and GDY to further promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Mo-Modified Zirconium Phosphate Solid Acid Catalysts for Sustainable Biodiesel Production from Low-Value Acidic Oils

Qiaofei Zhang,Yuanyuan Hou,Yiming Zhang,Wenlei Xie,Jiangbo Li,Lihong Guo,Hongjuan Bai

Graphical Heterogeneous Mo/ZrP solid acid catalysts with high specific surface area, hierarchically porosity, and strong acidity are developed by intercalating layered ZrP with Mo precursors. Such catalyst exhibits high resistance to water and FFAs, excellent reusability, and good capacity of simultaneous esterification and transesterification. The strong interaction between Mo and ZrP support enhances Mo dispersion and prevents leaching. To develop robust solid acid catalysts for the simultaneous transesterification and esterification of low-value oils into biodiesel, a Mo-modified zirconium phosphate (Mo/ZrP) catalyst was prepared via the intercalation of Mo precursors into layered ZrP using an impregnation method. N 2 adsorption-desorption, NH 3 -TPD, and Py-FTIR analyses indicated that the 40%Mo/ZrP catalyst possesses a high specific surface area, hierarchically porous structures, and strong acidic properties. Such catalyst demonstrates outstanding performance, achieving 97% oil conversion under the optimal reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst shows not only high resistance to free fatty acid (FFA) and water, but good reusability, maintaining oil conversion of >85% after five reuse cycles. This performance meets the requirements for biodiesel production from low-quality oil feedstocks containing moisture and FFA. As evidenced by XRD, UV–vis-DRS, and H 2 -TPR results, the intercalation of Mo species can induce strong interactions between the layered ZrP and Mo, enhancing catalytic stability by preventing the leaching of acidic Mo species. Additionally, the synergistic effect between Brønsted and Lewis acid sites contributes to excellent co-catalysis ability for simultaneous transesterification and esterification in acidic oil conversion.

Regulating N-doped biochar with Fe-Mo heterojunctions as cathode in long-life zinc-air battery

Xiao-ru Meng,Shuai Gao,Nianxi Liu,Pei-dong Wu,Zhen Fang

Carbonaceous electrode loaded nano Mo 2 C-Fe 3 N@NCF was synthesized by solvothermal and pyrolysis from soybean straw for high-performance zinc-air batteries (ZABs). The empowered ZAB achieved 1.51 V open-circuit voltage, 88.40 mW cm −2 power density and over 1150 h cycle life. Density functional theory analysis indicates that charge transfer from Mo 2 C-Fe 3 N heterogeneous structure to N-doped biochar can significantly reduce the reaction barrier for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions, enhancing the adsorption of oxygen intermediates. Cellulose-derived carbon provides a large specific surface area, and N-doping enhances the conductivity of the resultant biochar, which both play a crucial role in the efficient loading of Fe and Mo active sites. This work inspires the design and application of interfacial engineering on low-cost biochar carriers.

Interfacial Mo–O–W Bonds Improve the Photodegradation Performance of a Bi2MoO6/WO3 Z-Scheme Heterojunction

Hongjiao Song,Binbin Hu,Yulong Zhou,Ye Wu,Jibao Wu,Hongsong Tian,Qifeng Liang,Yongsheng Tan,Zebo Fang,Lirui Yu,Huili Li,Shunhang Wei

Interface engineering has been proven to be a promising strategy for regulating carrier transport. Herein, an interfacial Mo–O–W bond was constructed between Bi2MoO6 nanospheres and WO3 quantum dots. It served as a fast transfer channel for interfacial photogenerated carriers, resulting in the formation of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction. The Z-scheme heterojunction not only maximized the redox ability but also exhibited enhanced separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Thereby, it exhibited excellent degradation activity and reusability for different simulated pollutants (levofloxacin, rhodamine B, and methylene blue) under LED irradiation, and its photocatalytic rate is approximately doubled. Unexpectedly, a considerable amount of H2O2 was formed via a direct one-step two-electron oxygen reduction reaction process, which played a significant role in the photodegradation process, even surpassing the role of electrons/holes as active species. Furthermore, the photodegradation pathway of levofloxacin by the Z-scheme heterojunction was analyzed. This study could provide insights into establishing an interfacial chemical bond, modulating charge transfer, and the photodegradation mechanism.

NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxides Modified with Co–Mo Nitride for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Seawater

Xu Zhang,Baochang Gao,Yuan Tian,Yu Shi,Guowei Li,Zhiguo Zhang,Chengwei Han,Li Sun,Jingru Zhang,Bo Liu,Hongwei Zhang,Guangyu Bai

Direct electrolysis of seawater offers a promising pathway for sustainable hydrogen production while avoiding the issues caused by freshwater shortages. However, the sluggish four-electron transfer kinetics and the competitive adsorption of Cl– ions of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during seawater electrolysis remain as key challenges in designing effective catalysts. Herein, leveraging the electron-absorbing properties of molybdenum cobalt nitride (CoN/Mo2N) to modulate the electronic structure of nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH), a nanoscale hierarchical heterostructure of NiFe-LDH coated on CoN/Mo2N (CoN/Mo2N/LDH) was engineered to achieve highly efficient OER. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that the heterointerface facilitates charge transport kinetics. Additionally, charge density analysis and adsorption energy calculations confirm that the NiFe-LDH preferentially adsorbs OH– over Cl– in alkaline seawater. The CoN/Mo2N/LDH nanostructure requires only 249 mV overpotential to achieve 500 mA·cm–2 in 6 M KOH + seawater, maintaining 94.8% of its initial activity over 10 days of continuous operation. This work elucidates the electron-absorption-driven modulation of electronic structures in nitride-regulated LDH nanomaterials, enabling their application in industrial-scale seawater electrolysis. The tailored nanoscale design achieves simultaneous high-efficiency oxygen evolution and exceptional stability, advancing scalable green hydrogen production from seawater.

Adsorption mechanism of trimethyl-pyridin and kerosene on chalcopyrite and molybdenite in Cu-Mo bulk flotation

Wanting Yang,Zhuoyue Lan,Xiong Li,Yunchuan Li,Hang Li,Yunxiang Du

To efficiently enrich fine copper-molybdenum ore, a pioneering method was employed by utilizing MCO (trimethyl-pyridin) and kerosene as high-efficiency composite collectors in the flotation process. Micro-flotation and actual ore flotation tests demonstrated that the composite collector manifested superior collection capacity and selectivity compared to using a single collector. Furthermore, the inclusion of kerosene reduced collector consumption, thereby lowering overall reagent costs. TOC test results indicated that the composite collector possesses a high adsorption quantity on the mineral surface. Additionally, contact angle measurements demonstrated that the composite collector significantly enhanced the surface hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. FT-IR, XPS, and ToF-SIMS analyses were conducted to investigate the adsorption mechanism. The results illustrated that MCO adsorbed to mineral surfaces by forming complexes with Cu atoms in chalcopyrite and Mo atoms in molybdenite, respectively. The primary interaction between kerosene and copper-molybdenum ore involved hydrophobic attraction with kerosene physically adhering to the mineral surface to form hydrophobic aggregates. Hence, this study presented an effective procedural approach for the flotation of fine copper-molybdenum ore.
