Bimetallic MOF-Based Fibrous Device for Noninvasive Bilirubin Sensing

Zihan Lu,Zhijia Xiao,Jinlong Wang,Zhe Zhao,Jiayuan Huang,Jizhai Cui,Yongfeng Mei,Gaoshan Huang

Noninvasive and real-time detection of bilirubin concentration enables rapid assessment of liver health status and the diagnosis of jaundice-related diseases. Herein, the study proposes a strategy to uniformly grow bimetallic FeCo metal–organic framework (MOF) films onto the surface of carbonized electrospun nanofibers via a stepwise growth strategy involving an induction effect of oxide nanomembrane prepared by atomic layer deposition, to realize high-performance flexible nanofiber bilirubin sensors. Compared with monometallic MOF, the FeCo bimetallic MOF can attain a larger specific surface area, thus augmenting the exposed active sites. Furthermore, the synergistic interaction between the bimetallic active sites on the MOF film and the carbonized nanofibers enhances the electronic conduction network, thereby significantly enhancing the catalytic activity of the flexible electrode for bilirubin. The current nanofibers sensor exhibits excellent performance in bilirubin detection, in terms of high sensitivity, large linear detection range, and low detection limit. The synthesis of bimetallic MOF films on flexible fibers holds promise for the development of highly sensitive electrodes for wearable bilirubin detection devices.

Pyrolytic synthesis and luminescence of porous lanthanide Eu-MOF

Guangya Jin,Zhijian Liu,Hongfa Sun,Zhiyong Tian

A lanthanide metal coordination polymer [Eu 2 (BDC) 3 (DMSO)(H 2 O)] was synthesized by the reaction of europium oxide with benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (H 2 BDC) in a mixed solution of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water under hydrothermal conditions. The crystal structure of Eu 2 (BDC) 3 (DMSO)(H 2 O) was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermo-gravimetric analysis of Eu 2 (BDC) 3 (DMSO)(H 2 O) indicated that coordinated DMSO and H 2 O molecules could be removed to create Eu 2 (BDC) 3 (DMSO)(H 2 O)-py with permanent microporosity, which was also verified by powder XRD (PXRD) and elemental analysis. Both Eu 2 (BDC) 3 (DMSO)(H 2 O) and Eu 2 (BDC) 3 (DMSO)(H 2 O)-py showed mainly Eu-based luminescence and had characteristic emissions in the range 550–700 nm. Cu-MOF-derived Cu2V2O7@C nanofilm for electrochromic properties

Dong Jinxiu,Cui Shichuang,Wang Fei,Wei Wei,Yin Ziluo,Zhang Yuqing,Zhu Quanyao

Electrochromism (EC) is a color control technique for providing visual information, in which vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) is a promising material for electrochromic applications due to its excellent ionic intercalation/deintercalation properties and cathodic/anodic color-changing properties. However, its poor cycling stability and color change response rate limit its practical application. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) combine the rigidity and flexibility of inorganic–organic materials and can meet the requirements of EC materials such as cycle stability, electrical conductivity, and stress-interference resistance. We report here a strategy to modify V 2 O 5 with Cu-MOF. Cu-doped V 2 O 5 and carbon skeleton (Cu 2 V 2 O 7 @C) composites were prepared for electrochromism. In this scheme, Cu doping can facilitate lithium ion migration by broadening and stabilizing the structure of V 2 O 5 , and the distribution of the carbon skeleton can broaden the contact of the active material with the electrolyte and improve the electron conduction. Combining these merits, it exhibits excellent long-term cycle stability (the capacity retention rate reaches 91.78% after 2000 cycles), the light transmission modulation is greatly improved compared with V 2 O 5 (Δ T  = 69%, doubled), and the response time is reduced by 30.43%. This study provides a new perspective for improving the light modulation ability and long-term use stability of vanadium oxide EC materials and promotes the development of MOF materials in the field of electrochromism.

Lab-on-Fiber Operando Deciphering of a MOF Electrocatalyst

Tiansheng Huang,Li-Peng Sun,Xiangping Li,Bai-Ou Guan

Despite the great success in deploying metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as efficient electrocatalysts, the low adoption of operando methods hinders the understanding of underlying mechanism. By leveraging the subtle refractive index evolution, including both the real and the imaginary parts, an entirely new concept of a lab-on-fiber operando method and its feasibility for “pristine-immersion-operando-post analysis” of electrocatalyts are demonstrated. Concurrent collection of absorption spectra and surface plasmon resonance is achieved by engineering fiber-optic waveguides to simultaneously induce guided light attenuation and plasmonic coupling. In situ-formed Co hydroxide and oxide reactive intermediates in zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) electrocatalyst are optically identified, which shows its underlying self-reconstruction conversions at different stages during electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reactions, and address the gap in knowledge concerning whether ZIF-67 is a precatalyst for real catalyst production. This illuminating operando method offers intriguing opportunities to collect all the observables in a single fiber, provides an exciting potential of a new class of device with long-sought integration and miniaturization capability, and is expected to enable the electrocatalysis community to conquer challenges with conducting multimodal operando experiments outside the laboratory.

PEI grafted defective MOF-808 for enhanced boron removal

Xiaoyu Wang,Hanlin Shao,Zhihao Chen,Xiaoshuang Yin,Yun Chen,Ying Liu,Wenzhong Yang

Herein, we presented a facile method for enhanced boron removal based on PEI-grafted defective MOF-808 (D-MOF-808/PEI). The rich Zr OH bonds, amino-functionalized surface, and exposed metal defects of D-MOF-808/PEI endow it with the high adsorption capacity of boron. Due to the ligand exchange at metal defects and boron-imine/amine groups complexation, D-MOF-808/PEI exhibits exceptional selectivity for boron with the saturation adsorption of 95.30 mmol·g −1 at 45 °C. Additionally, negligible interference from other coexistent ions and excellent reusability promote the application of D-MOF-808/PEI practically for the rapid and high selectivity removal of boron from complex environmental samples. This work furnishes a promising strategy for boron contamination and expands the application potential of defective MOF-based adsorbents for environmental remediation.

MOF-Modified Microrollers for Bioimaging and Sustained Antibiotic Delivery

Yukun Zhong,Junkai Zhang,Lijun Fang,U Kei Cheang

Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by neurosurgery or intrathecal injection of contaminated cerebrospinal fluid are a common and difficult complication. Drug-delivery microrobots are among the latest solutions proposed for antibacterial applications. However, there is a lack of research into developing microrobots with the ability to sustain antibody delivery while can move efficiently in the CNS. Here, biocompatible antibacterial metal–organic framework (MOF)-modified microrollers (MMRs) to combat CNS infections are proposed. The MMRs are iron-based metal–organic framework (NH2-MIL-101(Fe)) modified for enhanced adsorption and Fe/Al coated for magnetic actuation and biocompatibility. The MMRs have demonstrated a faster and unhindered magnetically actuated motion on the uneven biological tissue surface in an organ-on-a-chip that mimicked the CNS compared to it on smooth surface. CFD results consistently align with the experimental findings. The MMRs can be loaded with rhodamine 6G for bioimaging, allowing them to be imaged through sections of the main human tissues by fluorescence microscopy, or tetracycline hydrochloride for antibiotic delivery, allowing them to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms by sustained release of antibiotics for 9 days. This study provides a strategy to integrate high-capacity adsorption material with magnetically actuated locomotion for long-term targeted antibacterial applications in biological environments.

Novel Multifunctional Zn-MOF for Synergistic Inhibition of Coronaviruses

Jiahao Li,Yuting Zhao,Jiadi Liu,Peng Li,Da An,Yi Pei,Bin Li,Xiaofeng Zheng,Yufan Feng,Hua Wu,Yanke Shan,Fei Liu

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a dual role in cellular processes, serving as essential signaling molecules at moderate levels but inducing oxidative stress and cell death in excess. Coronavirus infections significantly elevate intracellular ROS, disrupting cellular antioxidant defenses and promoting viral replication. Given the challenges posed by coronaviruses, including their high pathogenicity and cross-species transmission, new antiviral strategies are urgently needed. This study reports a newly designed zinc-based metal–organic framework (Zn-MOF) material, NJAU1, featuring a 2-fold interpenetrating helical porous structure synthesized through aqueous self-assembly technology. NJAU1 was characterized using advanced analytical techniques and demonstrated broad-spectrum antiviral activity against various coronaviruses, including PEDV, TGEV, and PDCoV. The underlying antiviral mechanisms of NJAU1 involve direct viral particle inactivation, inhibition of viral internalization and replication, ROS scavenging, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, as well as Zn2+-mediated modulation of ferroptosis and apoptosis. This work highlights NJAU1 as a promising multifunctional antiviral material that offers a novel approach to the prevention and treatment of coronavirus infections.

Enhanced triethylamine sensing performance of Fe-doped Co-MOF

Meng Tian,Baijing Li,Jianbo Sun

Triethylamine (TEA) finds extensive and critical applications across diverse domains including industrial manufacturing, pharmaceutical research and development, and agricultural cultivation. However, owing to its hazardous attributes such as toxicity and flammability, the detection of TEA has emerged as a pivotal step in safeguarding personal safety, mitigating environmental pollution, and elevating food safety standards. In the present study, Fe-doped cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanomaterials were successfully synthesized via a facile and efficient hydrothermal approach. Gas-sensing measurements reveal that the 5 at% Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 exhibits optimal performance, featuring an optimal operating temperature of 220°C and a response value sixfold that of the pure Co 3 O 4 sensor (21). Notably, the 5 at% Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 demonstrates rapid response and recovery time (32 s/34 s). Utilizing characterization techniques such as XPS and Fe-doped infrared spectroscopy for intermediate analysis, this work investigates the mechanism by which doping-induced charge transfer effects modulate the gas-sensing properties of the materials. Fe doping significantly enhances the gas-sensing activity, selectivity, and stability of cobalt-based MOF-derived materials by tailoring their local electronic structures. This discovery provides valuable theoretical underpinnings and experimental insights for the design of high-performance TEA gas sensors.

Lamellar MOF/MXene membranes for high-performance antibiotic desalination

Rui Zhang,Xiaohe Tian,Hongyi Wan,Xiangyu Liu,Keming Zhang,Haishan Huan,Tianhe Gu,Yueyangchao Yu,Shaofei Wang

Antibiotic desalination is a crucial purification process that selectively removes salts from antibiotic-containing streams to enhance product stability and reduce downstream processing costs. While 2D metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes offer molecular sieving potential, their aqueous instability due to weak van der Waals stacking limits practical implementation. We address this chemical engineering challenge via electrostatically dominated assembly of positively charged ZnBDC-NH 2 MOF nanosheets (+40 mV) and negatively charged MXene (−25 mV). This strategy synergizes MOF’s size-exclusion pores with MXene’s fast water-transport nanochannels, while interfacial hydrogen bonding enhances structural robustness. The optimized membrane achieves exceptional antibiotic desalination performance: 97.59 % chloramphenicol rejection and an unprecedented water permeance of 269.3 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , while maintaining stability over 120 h. At a comparable antibiotic rejection level, this water permeance is approximately 5–10 times higher than that of most previously reported membranes. Crucially, it demonstrates superior antibiotic/salt selectivity and maintains performance across varied feed concentrations. This work establishes a scalable electrostatic assembly platform for next-generation membranes in practical antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Large-Area Fabrication of Robust, Foldable MOF/ANF Membrane

Xue Zheng,Xiaoyan Ma,Zhenbo Yuan,Xichun Zhang,Rui Zhai,Runyu Duan,Xiaoming Song,Chao Teng,Yahong Zhou,Lei Jiang

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold huge potential in salinity gradient energy harvesting for the significant permeability. However, the MOF-based membranes suffer severely in real application due to the poor flexibility and small preparation area. Here, a large-area, roubst and foldable MOF/aramid nanofiber (ANF) heterogeneous membrane (≈137 cm 2 , ≈4.8 µm thickness) is successfully prepared based on a construction strategy proposed by in situ growth of continuous rigid MOF particles on both sides of flexible polymer substrates. ANF with abundant reactive groups are compounded with metal ions and 2-methylimidazole ligands to ensure the interfacial stability of MOFs on ANF membranes. The foldable membrane with high tensile strength (≈151.87 MPa) and fracture strain (≈9.9%) behaves excellent ion selectivity of 0.85 and power conversion density of 59.61 W m −2 under 500-fold salinity gradient due to abundant angstrom/nano-scale channels and surface electronegativity, which is at a high level compared to most of currently reported MOF-based materials. Notably, the heterogeneous membrane holds excellent power generation stability after continuous testing for 14 days. With ANF as the substrate, the selection of different MOF particles can still achieve efficient salinity gradient energy conversion. This construction methodology provides a practical solution for flexible, large-area and free-standing MOF-based nanofluidic membranes for osmotic energy conversion.

Zixian Liang,Jiahao Zhang,Qinyi Cao,Wanyuan Li,Yuting Dai,Yining Zhao,Leyan Ou,Dapeng Lei,Kunfeng Liu,Zonghua Luo,Ze Xiong,Guihua Jiang,Yin Ning,Jizhuang Wang,Jinyao Tang,Dan Li

Micro/nanorobots (MNRs) have demonstrated immense potential in the biomedical field, particularly magnetic-controlled MNRs, due to their non-invasive operation, high controllability, and excellent penetration abilities. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal for micro-robot design due to their high payload capacity and responsiveness. But creating customizable MOF-based micro-robots presents challenges. This study presents a novel method combining micro/nanofabrication and biphasic interfacial crystallization to construct customizable MOF-based magnetically manipulated microwheel-robots (MMWRs). By incorporating magnetic nanoparticles in situ , these MMWRs exhibit excellent magnetic responsiveness, performing various motions—such as standing, lying, rotating, tumbling, and rolling—under adjustable magnetic fields, enabling precise control and complex task execution. Furthermore, lipase-loaded MMWRs efficiently degrade tributyrin, with motion-induced diffusion and a pH-responsive feedback mechanism enhancing lipase release and degradation efficiency. Positron emission tomography with computed tomography imaging confirmed the potential of MMWRs in a simulated pipeline scenario. The customizable MOF-based micro-robots pave the way for advancements in environmental degradation and disease treatment.

Portable sensing of hydrogen peroxide using MOF-based nanozymes

LingFeng Yang,Zuyao Fu,Jing Xie,Zhaoyang Ding

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is extensively used in water treatment and food preservation for its pathogen-killing efficacy. Excessive H 2 O 2 intake, however, can lead to poisoning with symptoms such as abdominal pain and breathing difficulties. Additionally, small amounts of H 2 O 2 may be generated during food preservation, necessitating careful control to meet safety regulations. Real-time detection of H 2 O 2 is crucial for process safety and compliance. In this study, a Zr-MOF-based colorimetric fluorescent nanozyme sensor (NH 2 -UiO-67(Zr/Cu)) along with a smartphone-assisted portable device were developed for detecting H 2 O 2 . The sensor, NH 2 -UiO-67(Zr/Cu), combines the stable structural properties of Zr-MOF with ligand-generated fluorescence and exhibits peroxidase-like activity. The sensor demonstrated a detection range of 0–1000 μM, with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.0057 μM for the colorimetric assay and 0.0020 μM for the fluorescence assay. Additionally, we designed and developed a portable, smartphone-assisted device using 3D printing technology. This device offers a detection range of 0–750 μM, with LODs of 0.0093 μM in colorimetric mode and 0.0311 μM in fluorescence mode. The developed colorimetric fluorescent nanozyme sensor and portable device show significant potential for the rapid on-site detection of H 2 O 2 , offering a more convenient and reliable approach for quick identification of analytes in practical applications.
