Construction of Interfacial P–Ni Bonding for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Performance of P-Doped C3N4/Ni Photocatalysts

Xiaochun Zheng,Yidi Wang,Shoutian Ren,Qixiao Gai,Wenjun Liu,Quanli Dong

Interface defects are one of the main factors for inefficient photoelectric conversion of nanocomposites, which is also suitable for the photocatalytic nanosystem containing photosensitizers and co-catalysts, so the efficient passivation of interface defects can enhance their photocatalytic performance. In this work, P-doped C3N4 (P–C3N4) was prepared by the thermal polymerization of urea with phytic acid as the P doping source. Then, the doped P atoms could act as anchoring sites for photodeposited Ni nanoparticles (NPs) on P–C3N4, and Ni–P–N bonds were spontaneously formed between Ni NPs and P–C3N4 with doped P as the bridging ligand. The optimal H2 evolution rate of P–C3N4/Ni-20 is 1.56 mmol g–1 h–1, which is 52.0 and 6.0 times that of C3N4 and C3N4/Ni-30, respectively, and even 2.0 times that of P–C3N4/Pt-2%. Its apparent quantum efficiency of 4.35% at 420 nm was 6.9 times that of reference C3N4/Ni-30 without P doping. The optimized interface transfer of carriers by the formed Ni–P–N bonds between P–C3N4 and Ni NPs was the main factor for the enhanced photocatalytic performance of C3N4.

Ni@NC@NiCo-LDH nanocomposites from a sacrificed template Ni@NC@ZIF-67 for high performance supercapacitor

Yuan Chen,Hao Guo,Fan Yang,Ning Wu,Junye Zhang,Liping Peng,Bingqing Liu,Zhilan Pan,Wu Yang

A metal porous carbon (Ni@NC) supported nickel/cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) (Ni@NC@NiCo-LDH) with a cauliflower morphology was synthesized by a successive double template method . At first a nickel metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) was prepared and used as a sacrifice template to produce metal porous carbon (Ni@NC). Then the prepared conductive porous carbon material was exploited as a substrate for in-situ growing of ZIF-67 on its surface. Lastly the obtained Ni@NC@ZIF-67 was further used as a sacrifice template to prepare the final electrode material Ni@NC@NiCo-LDH by Ni 2+ etching and co-precipitation. The cooperation of Ni@NC with excellent conductivity and NiCo-LDH with superior pseudocapacitive property yielded a synergistic effect , which effectively improved the electrochemical performance of the resulted electrode material. And the special flower morphology exposed more redox active sites and provided proper charge transport path for enhanced electrochemical performance. The prepared Ni@NC@NiCo-LDH exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1761.8 F·g −1 at the current density of 1 A·g −1 . The assembled Ni@NC@NiCo-LDH//AC asymmetric supercapacitor also displayed an acceptable energy density (39.27 Wh·kg −1 at the power density of 757.21 W·kg −1 ) and ultrahigh cycling stability (94.74% capacitance retention after 25000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ).

Selective aqueous-phase hydrogenation of furfural to cyclopentanol over Ni-based catalysts prepared from Ni-MOF composite

Haihong Xia,Jing Li,Changzhou Chen,Dichao Wu,Jurong Ren,Jianchun Jiang,Minghao Zhou

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an emerging class of porous materials exhibit some unique advantages, including controllable composition, a large surface area, high porosity, and so on. In this work, the spherical NiMo bimetal catalysts supported on porous carbon matrix were prepared using a simple wet impregnation method and studied for selective hydrogenation of furfural (FFA). Three different catalysts were investigated including Ni/C-Mo-BTC, Ni/C-Mo-DHTA and Ni/C-Mo-PTA. Of the catalysts studied the Ni/C-Mo-BTC catalyst could achieve the highest selectivity of CPL (up to 90%) under moderate reaction conditions (140 °C, 2 MPa, 2 h) in aqueous medium. In addition, other Ni-based catalysts (Ni/C-Fe, Ni/C-Zn, Ni/C-Cu, Ni/C-Ce) were also investigated to achieve yields of 20–70% under the same reaction conditions. The influence of temperature, H 2 pressure, time and solvent were investigated for the best performing catalyst. Based on the optimal reaction condition, various of furfural derivatives could also be effectively transferred to produce corresponding products. The detailed physicochemical characterization was carried out by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, NH 3 -TPD and Raman analysis. In the end, the optimal Ni/C-Mo0.4 catalyst could be recycled magnetically and efficiently applied in the next run for five consecutive recycling tests in the FFA hydrogenation to CPL. The results suggested Ni/C-Mo0.4 catalyst occurred to increasingly favor the formation of Ni-Mo alloys and suggested a metallic active site in FFA hydrogenation with the addition of element Mo. Mechanism study indicated that water was a key factor contributing to the formation of different desired products, which was responsible for the arrangement of furan compound.

(Ni,Co)Se@Ni(OH)2 heterojunction nanosheets as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Yunmei Du,Huimin Zhao,Wensi Wang,Yu Yang,Minghui Wang,Shaoxiang Li,Yanru Liu,Lei Wang

A heterogeneous structure formed by coupling two or more phases can reinforce the activity of active sites and expedite electron transfer, which is conducive to boosting its electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we designed nickel foam supported (NiCo2)Se@Ni(OH)2 (NCS@NH) heterojunction nanosheets by a two-step method. First of all, the NiCo2S4@Ni(OH)2 (NiCo2S4@NH) nanosheets coated on nickel foam were acquired via a hydrothermal method. In the selenization treatment that followed, NiCo2S4@NH was converted into NCS@NH heterogeneous nanosheets in which the selenide nanoparticles decorated on the surface of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets formed heterojunction interfaces, and the heterogeneous structure could accelerate electron transfer, thus improving the catalytic activity. The Ni(OH)2 nanosheets can adequately contact the electrolyte and promote the decomposition of water. Meanwhile, the thickness of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets gradually decreases with the increase of Co doping (1.5–2.5 mmol), consequently affecting the HER properties. Notably, when the amount of Co salt added is 2 mmol, NCS@NH exhibited superior HER properties (with a voltage of 253 mV at 100 mA cm−2) and excellent stability for 24 h.

Pure Acetylene Semihydrogenation over Ni–Cu Bimetallic Catalysts: Effect of the Cu/Ni Ratio on Catalytic Performance

Shuzhen Zhou,Lihua Kang,Xuening Zhou,Zhu Xu,Mingyuan Zhu

Ethylene is an important chemical raw material and with the increasing consumption of petroleum resources, the production of ethylene through the calcium carbide acetylene route has important research significance. In this work, a series of bimetallic catalysts with different Cu/Ni molar ratios are prepared by co-impregnation method for the hydrogenation of calcium carbide acetylene to ethylene. The introduction of an appropriate amount of Cu effectively inhibits not only the formation of ethane and green oil, thus increasing the selectivity of ethylene, but also the formation of carbon deposits, which improves the stability of the catalyst. The ethylene selectivity of the Ni–Cu bimetallic catalyst increases from 45% to 63% compared with the Ni monometallic counterpart and the acetylene conversion still can reach 100% at the optimal conditions of 250 °C, 8000 mL·g−1·h−1and V(H2)/V(C2H2) = 3. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the metal particles were highly dispersed on the support, High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and H2-Temperature programmed reduction proved that there was an interaction between Ni and Cu, combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations results, Cu transferred electrons to Ni changed the Ni electron cloud density in NiCuxcatalysts, thus reducing the adsorption of acetylene and ethylene, which is favorable to ethylene selectivity. Keywords:Ni–Cu;calcium carbide acetylene;selective hydrogenation;ethylene

Wenhu Yang,Hao Guo,Liguo Yue,Qi Li,Mengni Xu,Longwen Zhang,Tian Fan,Wu Yang

In this present paper, a novel layered multi-metal sulphide was reported as a positive electrode material with abundant electroactive sites and redox reaction centres. Molybdenum and sulfur elements were introduced into the metal-organic frameworks (M-MOF: M = Ni, Co and Ni/Co) to synthesize layered MMoS x by a hydrothermal method . The electrochemical performance comparison of MOFs and six electrode materials demonstrated that NiCoMoS x electrode materials had the best electrochemical performance and the highest specific capacitance. The highest specific capacitance could reach 2595 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . The NiCoMoS x electrode material also had an excellent cycle stability with a retention rate of 90.8% after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles. In addition, the as-assembled NiCoMoS x //AC assymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device exhibited a maximum energy density of 48.2 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 807.2 W kg −1 , and the capacity retention rate after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles was 91.6%. This electrochemical performance indicated that this kind of material had a good market development prospect.

One-step potentiostatic electrodeposition of Ni–Se–Mo film on Ni foam for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Ying Gao,Hanwei He,Wenyu Tan,Yizhi Peng,Xiaomei Dai,Yihui Wu

Exploring efficient, abundant, low-cost and stable materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desired but still a challenging task. Herein, Ni–Se–Mo electrocatalysts supported on nickel foam (NF) substrate were synthesized by a facile one-step electrodeposition method. The Ni–Se–Mo film presents high electrocatalytic activity and stability toward HER, with a low overpotential of 101 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH medium. Such excellent HER performance of Ni–Se–Mo film induced by the synergistic effects from Mo-doped Ni–Se film leads to the fast electron transfer . This work provides the validity of interface engineering strategy in preparing highly efficient transition metal chalcogenides based HER electrocatalysts.

Overlooked oxidative role of Ni(III) in the enhanced mineralization of Ni(II)–EDTA complex by ozonation

Yang Zong,Wenjie Ji,Yu Xie,Deli Wu

The mineralization of organic pollutant by O 3 is prone to be restricted by the accumulative production of oxalate (OA) that is recalcitrant to the attack of hydroxyl radical ( OH). Herein, it was interestingly found that the presence of 0.5 mM Ni(II) enhanced the mineralization efficiency of EDTA by O 3 under alkaline conditions by 22.8%, with the promoting effect of Ni(II) augmented as the increasing loading of Ni(II). Based on the results from scavenging experiment, chemical probe detection and XPS characterization, it was verified that except for the commonly recognized reactive oxidants (i.e., OH and O 3 ) in EDTA mineralization, the overlooked Ni(III) species (i.e., NiOOH) also played an indispensable role in enhancing the mineralization of EDTA. The Ni(III) species was formed via the oxidation of decomplexed Ni(II) by OH and in turn collaborated with OH to decompose EDTA. More importantly, the generated Ni(III) species exerted higher affinity towards OH and O 3 -resistent oxalate, hence elevating EDTA mineralization. This study elucidated the significant role of Ni(III) species in promoting the mineralization efficiency of EDTA, and also proposed a new insight into elevating the treatment performance of ozonation via the collaborative oxidation mechanism-co-mediated by OH and Ni(III) species.

Activating Ni nanoparticles into Ni single atoms by N doping for high-performance electrochemical sensing of glucose

Hang Yin,Xiao Bai,Ziyin Yang

N doping is an effective strategy for regulating the electrocatalytic activity of nanomaterials. However, the mechanism of N doping enhancing electrocatalysis is still unclear. In view of the important role of N doping in inducing the preparation of metal single atoms, could the effect of N doping on electrocatalytic activity be caused by metal single atoms? In the work, two types of nanocomposites were prepared by anchoring Ni nanoparticles into carbon nanomaterials (C) and N doped carbon nanomaterials (NC), respectively. Electrochemical studies found that N doping significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic activity of Ni nanoparticles for glucose oxidation. Further studies show that NC was loaded with not only Ni nanoparticles, but also Ni single atoms (NiSA), which are usually easily overlooked. Moreover, it is interesting to find that NiSA exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation, even stronger than Ni nanoparticles. The sensor based on NiSA/NC could detect glucose from 0.0008 mM to 1.124 mM with a high sensitivity of 799.43 µA mM −1 ·cm −2 and a low detection limit of 0.22 µM. Therefore, it can be inferred that the reason N doping boosting the electrocatalytic activity may be attributed to the presence of NiSA. This work not only provides a new perspective to explain the mechanism of N doping on electrocatalysis, but also for the first time demonstrated the excellent electrocatalytic ability of NiSA toward glucose oxidation.

Evolution of Ni coordination configuration during one-pot pyrolysis synthesis of Ni-g-C3N4 single atom catalyst

Hao Wang,Jiangwen Liao,Jiajun Zhong,Yunpeng Liu,Lei Yao,Lixiong Qian,Yuecheng Lai,Xin Wang,Yikun Li,Jianxin Song,Xueqing Xing,Guang Mo,Zhongjun Chen,Zhonghua Wu

In this paper, the unclear Ni atom coordination structure evolution in one-pot pyrolysis method synthesizing Ni single atom catalyst using graphitic carbon nitride as support (Ni-g-C 3 N 4 ) was deeply discussed. In-situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectra and other assisted methods were used to characterize the structural evolution. The results demonstrate that the pyrolysis process can be divided into three stages. In the first stage from room temperature to 183 °C (Stage I), the NiCl 2 ⋅6H 2 O was mixed with the supporting material (dicyandiamide) to form the precursor with Ni-(H 2 O) 6 octahedral coordination configuration. In the second stage from 183 to 350 °C (Stage II), the H 2 O molecules have been removed and the supporting material was converted to melamine. The melamine molecules were polycondensed to melem during 308–350 °C. The intermediates labeled Ni-melamine and Ni-melem was formed with Ni-N 4 planar quadrilateral coordination configuration. In the third stage from 350 to 600 °C (Stage III ), the supporting material (melem) was gradually converted to g-C 3 N 4 , and the Ni-N 4 coordination configurations were replaced by Ni-N 6 planar hexagon coordination configuration one by one. The three Ni coordination configurations were further confirmed by Reverse Monte Carlo simulations and ab initio calculations .

Improvement Effect of Ni to Pd-Ni/SBA-15 Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde to Hydrocinnamaldehyde

Shiying Han,Yunfei Liu,Jiang Li,Rui Li,Fulong Yuan,Yujun Zhu

A series of Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts supported on SBA-15 (0.2%Pd-x%Ni/SBA-15, x = 0.4, 0.7, and 1.2) were prepared through the impregnation method combined with the NaBH4reduction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the prepared catalysts. All the synthesized catalysts were evaluated for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). The addition of Ni obviously enhanced the CAL conversion and selectivity of C=C hydrogenation to hydrocinnamaldehyde (HALD) over the 0.2%Pd-x%Ni/SBA-15 catalysts. Meanwhile, 0.2%Pd-1.2%Ni/SBA-15 showed the best performance with 96.3% conversion and 87.8% selectivity toward HALD. This improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect between the Pd and Ni nanoparticles, enhancing the dispersion of Pd metal particles and increasing the content of surface Pd0species. In addition, the influences of a few reaction factors including H2pressure, reaction temperature, and reaction time were studied over 0.2%Pd-1.2%Ni/SBA-15.Keywords:selective hydrogenation;cinnamaldehyde;hydrocinnamaldehyde;synergistic effect;Pd-Ni/SBA-15

Hongyan Chen,Yani Ai,Fan Liu,Xing Chang,Yuan Xue,Qi Huang,Chi Wang,Hualin Lin,Sheng Han

Hierarchical nanoarchitecture and composition can offer preponderances for enhancing pseudocapacitor performances. This paper reports on the three-dimensional hierarchical carbon-coated Ni–Mn layered double hydroxide on nickel foam (LNC) electrode material prepared via a facile two-step hydrothermal reaction. The resulting performance of the LNC composite material has high specific capacitance (1916   F   g −1 ) and good cycling stability (91% retention after 5000 charge–discharge cycles). Moreover, the material can be directly used as an integrated flexible electrode with excellent rate capability (79.5% retention at 10   A   g −1 ), which is significant in practical applications and large-scale syntheses. Furthermore, the LNC materials acting as a positive electrode for the asymmetric supercapacitor also exhibit high specific capacitance of 120.67   F   g −1 at 0.5   A   g −1 and excellent cycling stability with 84.2% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at a current density of 5   A   g −1 .
