Triple-synergistic BNNSs@PDA/ODA/TiO₂-reinforced silicone-epoxy coatings with enhanced mechanical robustness and marine corrosion protection

Shuai Su,Hanzati Abulikemu,Rongcao Yu,Shengnan Hu,Fengyuan Shu,Bing Lei,Xin Yuan

Superhydrophobic nanofiller-modified organic coatings are widely used for metal corrosion protection but face critical bottlenecks: poor interfacial compatibility with resin matrices, insufficient hydrophobic durability under harsh conditions, and a trade-off between hydrophobicity and mechanical strength. To address these issues, this study developed a triple-synergistic modification strategy to synthesize a novel superhydrophobic filler (BNNSs@PDA/ODA/TiO₂) for reinforcing silicone epoxy (SE) coatings. Polydopamine (PDA) acts as a bionic bridge for multi-point anchoring, octadecylamine (ODA) forms a 3D hydrophobic network, and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) enables micropore filling and enhanced crosslinking. The BNNSs@PDA/ODA/TiO₂-SE composite coating exhibits significantly improved mechanical properties, including enhanced storage modulus, glass transition temperature, and crosslinking density, with interfacial chemical bonding being the dominant driver for performance enhancement. In simulated marine environments, the composite coating shows excellent long-term corrosion resistance, maintaining strong protective capability after prolonged immersion and effectively inhibiting corrosion at scratch sites. A coupled “diffusion-electrochemical reaction” model verifies that the superhydrophobic labyrinth effect and interfacial bonding synergistically inhibit corrosion mechanisms. This work provides a scalable design strategy for high-performance composite coatings integrating mechanical robustness and long-term corrosion protection, addressing the practical demand for durable coatings in harsh environments such as marine engineering and shipbuilding.

Plant-wearable fluorescent hydrogel patch based on PDA-PEI copolymer dots for on-site visual detection of glyphosate

Shuqi Wang,Shuzhen Zheng,Hongzhi Lu,Changsheng Wang,Shoufang Xu

Background Glyphosate (GLY) residues are difficult to remove from agricultural products and pose potential risks to food safety, making their sensitive detection highly desirable. In this study, a Cu 2+ -mediated ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform was constructed for the sensitive detection of GLY by physically mixing polydopamine-polyethyleneimine copolymer dots (PDA-PEI CPDs) with terephthalic acid (PTA) based on a competitive coordination strategy. Results Cu 2+ coordinated with the amino groups on the surface of CPDs and the carboxyl groups of PTA to form a CPDs-PTA-Cu 2+ complex. This process quenched the green fluorescence of CPDs at 530 nm while generating a new blue emission at 450 nm. Upon the addition of GLY, competitive coordination between GLY and Cu 2+ disrupted the complex, resulting in fluorescence recovery at 530 nm and fluorescence quenching at 450 nm, thereby producing a ratiometric fluorescence response. The sensor shows linear ranges of 0-80 μg/mL for GLY (LOD = 5.73 ng/mL). To meet the requirements of on-site applications, a CPDs-Cu 2+ @sodium alginate hydrogel was further prepared. Under 365 nm excitation, the hydrogel responded to GLY through single-emission fluorescence recovery at 530 nm. The hydrogel enabled smartphone-assisted RGB quantitative analysis and in situ semi-quantitative screening of GLY on vegetable surfaces using a wearable hydrogel patch. Significance By integrating solution-phase ratiometric fluorescence quantification with hydrogel-based visual readout, a simple and portable sensing platform was established for accurate GLY determination and visual screening of surface residues.

Portable electrochemical detection of lactate in Sepsis serum based on PB@PDA/LOX modified screen printed carbon electrodes

Wei Wang,Yi Zheng,Ran Xia,uqiao Cheng,Shunan Lv,Nuo Xu,Xueyin Shi,Haiying Ji,Weiwei Li

Sepsis induces excessive inflammation and immune dysfunction via infection, often progressing to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Serum lactate is a key biomarker for evaluating tissue perfusion, oxygen metabolism, and prognosis in sepsis, making rapid, accurate, and portable lactate detection critical for sepsis management. To address this, we developed a portable screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with a PB@PDA/LOX composite. PB nanoparticles enhance electrocatalysis to accelerate electron transfer and reduce oxidation overpotential, enabling the sensor to exhibit a linear response (2–1000 μmol/L, LOD = 1.195 μM) that matches lactate levels in pretreated sepsis serum; its low oxidation potential (~0.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl) also avoids interference from coexisting substances. Glutaraldehyde (via dual-terminal aldehyde bridging) immobilizes LOX, while PDA forms a stable “substrate-PB-PDA-LOX” structure-this provides a biomimetic microenvironment to prevent LOX inactivation, reduces non-specific protein adsorption, and extends detection lifetime. The mass-produced SPCE (1 cm × 2 cm, low cost) integrates with compact detectors for “drop-and-detect” functionality, with detection time < 5 min. Via multi-component synergy, this modified electrode overcomes limitations of existing sensors (stability, sensitivity, anti-interference, portability) and offers an efficient lactate detection tool for sepsis patient assessment and animal model mechanism studies.

Fast solar-heating sponge with TEMPO-modified PDA coating for rapid recovery of highly-viscous oil on water

Jichen Huang,Xiaoyun Sun,Jinfeng Mei,Xudong Zheng,Zhongyu Li

A novel solar-heating sponge with high photothermal conversion efficiency was prepared for rapid cleanup of offshore oil spills. The sponge was fabricated by coating a modified polydopamine (PDA) layer on a thermal conductive sponge containing nanotubes (CNTs), followed by a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer. The modified PDA layer was copolymerized using 2,2,6,6- tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl free radical (TEMPO) and dopamine. The resulting sponge exhibits a UV-Vis sunlight adsorption efficiency as high as 93.0 %, and can be heated to 92 ℃ within 90 s under 1 sun irradiation. The adsorption capacity of the sponge for crude oil reached 733 wt%. Additionally, the high elasticity and stability endows the sponge excellent regenerability. Its adsorption capacity, water contact angle and surface morphology all remain unchanged after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. For continuous oil spill remediation, the crude oil cleaning rate can attain 30 g/(g·min). The high photothermal efficiency, rapid adsorption efficiency and excellent regenerability suggest the sponge to be a potential candidate for treatment of viscous oil spills.

Insights into the catalytic activity and recyclability of Pt deposited on PDA encapsulated porous silica toward hydrosilylation reaction

Zhiqing Liu,Zepan Sun,Haifeng Zhang,Yajing Pan,Pei Liu,Chonggang Wu,Tao Hu

Mussel inspired polydopamine (PDA) has been extensively applied as a linker in noble metal based heterogeneous catalysts to promote either metal dispersion or metal-support interaction. Herein, three heterogeneous Pt catalysts were first prepared by depositing Pt on PDA encapsulated porous silica (SiO 2 -PDA-Pt) with different PDA coating degree and their catalytic activity toward two model hydrosilylation reactions between methyldichlorosilane and a non-polar 1-octene and a polar allyl cyanide were investigated. Meanwhile, stability and recyclability of these catalysts were also explored. Results show that PDA coating degree may directly influence both Pt loading and its oxidation state, which then resultantly tailor the activity of the supported catalysts. The SiO 2 -PDA-Pt catalysts all showed excellent activity even after six catalytic rounds even though a gradual loss of Pt species were observed. Among them, the activity of the one with lowest PDA coating exhibited both higher activity and better recyclability, which is mainly ascribed to a higher content and retention of more active low valent Pt 0 species that may be well stabilized by proper PDA coating.

Dual-shell n-OD@PDA phase-change microcapsule reinforced superhydrophobic coatings with enhanced photothermal anti-/de-icing performance

Bochen Jiang,Lie Wen,Xiaojing Sui,Mengyu Lei,Yanhua Lei,Jiangdong Cao,Tao Liu,Jiacheng Cui,Jingyang Ren,Yu Gu,Zhongzhou Cui,Jiantao Wang

Photothermal superhydrophobic coatings hold great potential for anti-icing/de-icing, but are severely limited by strong dependence on solar illumination and poor stability in dark or low-light environments. Herein, a multifunctional superhydrophobic coating reinforced with dual‑shell phase‑change microcapsules (n‑OD@PDA) is fabricated for synergistic passive anti‑icing and active de‑icing applications. The microcapsules consist of an n-octadecane core for latent heat storage, a SiO₂ inner shell for structural stability, and a polydopamine outer shell enabling broadband photothermal conversion. Incorporated into a fluorinated epoxy matrix, the resulting coating exhibits a hierarchical micro-/nanostructure with excellent superhydrophobicity (Contact angle 151°, Sliding angle 2°). Under 1 Sun irradiation, the coating rapidly heats to 63°C, representing a 96.3% enhancement compared with PDA-free systems. Owing to the phase-change heat storage and release, stable thermal regulation is maintained even under weak or no illumination. At -20°C, the freezing time of water droplets is prolonged by approximately 25 times, and the coating possesses ultra-low ice adhesion strength (10-15 kPa) and rapid de-icing/defrosting performance. This work provides a promising all-weather strategy for high-efficiency anti-/de-icing coatings in harsh low-temperature environments. Experimental and First-Principles Investigation of PDA@KNN/P(VDF-TrFE) Composite Films: Interfacial Effects and Piezoelectric Enhancement

Quanbin Ma,Zhihua Zheng,Rui Li,Shi Feng,Juqi Wang,Haoyang Chen,Hongjun Qian,Fangping Ouyang,Xiaolong Yao,Shishang Guo

Flexible piezoelectric sensors with high output and long-term stability are critically limited by low polar phase content and inefficient interfacial electromechanical coupling in polymer-based systems. Here, we report a high-performance flexible piezoelectric sensor based on a PDA-engineered PDA@KNN/P(VDF-TrFE) electrospun composite, achieving simultaneous enhancement of β-phase crystallinity, interfacial stress transfer, and piezoelectric output. Owing to the bioinspired PDA interfacial layer and electrospinning-induced chain alignment, the optimized composite exhibits an ultrahigh β-phase fraction of 85.5%, significantly higher than pristine P(VDF-TrFE) (∼51%). The piezoelectric sensor delivers a high output voltage of 30 V, an ultrasensitive pressure response of 0.48 V·kPa–1, and excellent durability with <3% signal degradation over 3000 loading cycles, outperforming most reported PVDF-based piezoelectric sensors. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that PDA-mediated interfacial coupling significantly lowers the interfacial formation energy (−3.27 eV), induces directional charge transfer, and reduces the work function, thereby enhancing interfacial polarization and electromechanical response. Furthermore, the sensor is successfully integrated into a self-powered smart wrist pressure monitoring system, enabling real-time detection of mechanical stimuli during fitness training. This work demonstrates a performance-driven interfacial engineering strategy for high-output, durable, and lead-free flexible piezoelectric sensors, with strong potential for wearable electronics and self-powered sensing applications.

A dual-modal ROS generator based on multifunctional PDA–MnO2@Ce6 nanozymes for synergistic chemo-photodynamic antibacterial therapy

Anni Cui,Ying Bao,Haitao Xu,Xin Mu,Xiahua Zhong,Wynn Wee,Fanqi Wu,Guiye Shan

The rapid emergence of drug-resistant bacteria has attracted great attention to exploring advanced antibacterial methods. However, single-modal antibacterial therapy cannot easily eliminate drug-resistant bacteria completely due to its low efficacy. Therefore, it is essential to achieve multi-modal antibacterial therapy effectively. Herein, a dual-modal ROS generator was designed based on photosensitive PDA–MnO2@Ce6/liposome (PMCL) nanozymes for synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy. PMCL nanozymes adhere to bacteria through liposome–membrane fusion. Meanwhile, PMCL catalyzes endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) under laser irradiation. Furthermore, the photothermal effect can accelerate the generation of ROS. Based on dual-enzyme activities (mimicking peroxidase and catalase) and photodynamic properties, PMCL achieves powerful antibacterial efficacy and mature bacterial biofilm eradication. With the synergistic chemo-photodynamic effects, bacterial populations decrease by >99.76% against Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. Notably, the synergistic antibacterial properties of PMCL nanozymes are further explored using a mouse wound model of S. aureus infection. This work fabricated an efficient dual-modal ROS generator to kill bacteria, further providing a new strategy for treating wound infection.

AgPd nanocages sandwiched between a MXene nanosheet and PDA layer for photothermally improved catalytic activity and antibacterial properties

Jie Jin,Shanshan Wu,Jing Wang,Yunqi Xu,Shouhu Xuan,Qunling Fang

In this work, a MXene@AgPd/polydopamine (PDA) nanosheet with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency was successfully synthesized by a simple redox-oxidative polymerization method. Interestingly, AgPd bimetallic nanocrystals sandwiched between a MXene nanosheet and PDA layer have cage-like nanostructure, which is favorable for high catalytic efficiency and antibacterial performance. Importantly, the MXene@AgPd/PDA nanosheet exhibits good catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (1.2 min−1 mg−1) and the catalytic dynamics can be improved by about 1.2 times under NIR (near-infrared light, 808 nm, and 2.5 W cm−2) irradiation. As the PDA shell is well protected, the MXene@AgPd/PDA nanosheet retained more than 90% catalytic activity after 6 cycles. In addition, due to the presence of the Ag component, the MXene@AgPd/PDA nanosheet exhibited good antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria. Under near-infrared light irradiation, its antibacterial activity was further enhanced due to the NIR photothermal effect.

Ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductive epoxy composites by cellulose-supported GnPs@PDA skeleton under stress-induced orientation strategy

Jiangang Zhou,Congzhen Xie,Rui Wang,Huasong Xu,Bin Gou,Hao Yang,Licheng Li

Designing anisotropic thermally conductive networks in thermal management materials can effectively exploit the high in-plane thermal conductivity of two-dimensional fillers to achieve high heat transfer efficiency along the predetermined direction, which is the hotspot for thermal management materials. However, constructing such an interconnected network with an orderly alignment structure through thermally conductive fillers has proved challenging. In this study, a high-density cellulose-supported GnPs@PDA skeleton with an interconnected and ordered structure was successfully prepared through the stress-induced strategy. After embedding into the epoxy resin , the EP/CGP composites with 22.1 vol% filler content exhibit an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 8.39 W/mK under a 75 % compression ratio, which is 12.3 times higher than that without compression. The enhancement of thermal conductivity for EP/CGP composites under the stress-induced orientation strategy is illustrated by the finite element analysis and metal foam theory. Furthermore, the transient heat transmission processes of the composites are recorded to verify their prospect in thermal management applications. This novel approach sheds light on the fabrication of thermally conductive networks with interconnected and ordered structures for next-generation thermal management materials.

Rational designed ZIF-8@PDA@PDMS composite sponge for efficient and sustainable particulate matter filtering under harsh environment

Yukui Gou,Yuanye Hao,Weilong Cai,Jianying Huang,Yuekun Lai

Particulate matter (PM) is a significant danger to both environment and human health. Despite the development of a series of air filters, they do not work well in harsh environment such as high temperature, high humidity or long-time filtration. To make a three-dimensional (3D) particle capture device, a sacrificial template approach was used to manufacture polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge, and then zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) was grown in situ on the 3D network of PDMS sponge. The removal efficiency of PM 2.5 or PM 10 is greater than 99.8% because of the high specific surface area and porous network structure of PDMS sponge, as well as the large number of metal sites of ZIF-8. In addition, the sponge filter has long-term filtration stability and still achieves excellent performance after 65 h of filtration. The composite sponge can adapt to harsh environments such as high temperature (250 °C) and high humidity (90% RH). Composite sponge filter has a regular shape, and it may be customized to any shape as required. This study provides a new idea for designing 3D high-efficiency air filters that can adapt to harsh environments.
