The flexible foam piezoresistive sensor demonstrates significant potential for wearable strain-sensing applications due to its substantial deformation capacity, excellent flexibility, and cost effectiveness. However, conventional flexible foam piezoresistive sensors often struggle to simultaneously achieve high sensitivity, a wide pressure detection range, fast response and long-term stability. This paper employed a glucose-based sugar-templating method to fabricate a fine-pore (50 μm) foam structure complemented by a dual-filler strategy to enhance overall performance. A robust porous conductive network was constructed by embedding zinc oxide (ZnO) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The resulting sensor exhibits outstanding piezoresistive properties, featuring a wide linear detection range (0–80% strain) and a high sensitivity of 9.02 kPa−1within the 0–10 kPa pressure range. It demonstrates rapid response/recovery times of 50/70 ms and maintains stable output performance even after 5000 compression cycles at 300 kPa. The sensor also exhibits negligible environmental interference and excellent long-term stability. When attached to finger joints, feet soles, or the throat, the sensor enables functions such as finger bending recognition, race-walking violation discrimination, gait analysis, and vocal fold vibration recognition, thereby demonstrating its considerable potential for application in human–computer interaction and human motion detection.

By means of chemical combination between the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer and Polyethersulfone (PES) layer, a kind of PDMS/PES composite membrane was prepared for separation of the light hydrocarbon components from the drilling mud. Meanwhile, its separation performance of the light-hydrocarbon components from the drilling mud was investigated and evaluated quantitatively. Results showed that the prepared PDMS/PES composite membrane had good mechanical performance, and it was resistant to corrosion of the water-based drilling mud. The PDMS/PES composite membrane can work stably at 5 MPa and 393 K. The responding time of the membrane to sudden change of the hydrocarbon gas content was less than one minute. For either single phase flow or gas-liquid two-phase flow, a high flow rate was recommended to avoid non-ideal flow patterns and to increase mass transfer in the feed channel of the membrane cell . Results in this work could be helpful for further application of the membrane technology in geological mud logging.

A novel method for making Parylene C-coated PDMS microfluidic chips is presented for the first time here. This method can maintain the vacuum-driven power of PDMS microfluidic chips for more than 30 days. Parylene C membrane has quite low permeability to water vapor and gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. In addition, Parylene C membrane is transparent and has chemical inertness. Thus, the detection of reaction results on the chip would not be affected. The investigated results showed that a thicker Parylene C membrane and a thicker PDMS microfluidic chip resulted in a longer vacuum holding time. Digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) analyses were used to verify that the new method would not influence the biochemical analyses in these microfluidic chips. Furthermore, the evacuation process and Parylene C coating process can be carried out at the same time, and the operation is quite easy. This new method prolongs greatly the storage lives of vacuum-driven PDMS microfluidic chips, and will make them become widely accepted in point-of-care diagnostics.

Superhydrophobic materials possess prospective applications of oily wastewater treatment due to their high efficiency and easy operation. Nevertheless, most superhydrophobic materials are difficult to separate oil-water emulsion, especially for highly viscous water-in-crude oil emulsion. Herein, a superhydrophobic wood with excellent Joule heat and demulsification was proposed by chemically treating the natural wood and subsequent coating of the carboxyl-modified carbon nanotubes (cCNTs) for providing conductive pathways, polyethylenimide (PEI) for supporting demulsification and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for hydrophobic modification. The fabricated superhydrophobic PDMS@PEI-cCNTs wood displayed a water contact angle of 155 o and great compression property with a nearly undamaged structure at a strain of 40 % after 50 compression tests, which could separate and recover oil from the oil-water mixture via absorption-extrusion process. Besides, due to the filtration and electrostatic interaction of the PDMS@PEI-cCNTs wood, the water-in-oil emulsion was demulsified quickly with a separation efficiency greater than 99.7 %. Meanwhile, the PDMS@PEI-cCNTs wood showed a good Joule heat capability, and the surface temperature reached 160 °C at 35 V of voltage within 120 s, which largely reduced the viscosity of water-in-crude oil emulsion. Thus, the PDMS@PEI-cCNTs wood was successful in separating the water-in-crude oil emulsion via Joule heat capability with a separation rate of 4.33 × 10 4 kg·m −3 ·h −1 and a separation efficiency of 93.4 %. The material developed in this study has wide range of applications in treating the stable crude oil-water emulsion with high viscosity.

Effective utilization of abundant solar energy can help alleviate the global energy shortage. In this work, a flexible sandwich structured transparent photothermal film was prepared by sequentially spray coating MXene conductive layer as core, and spin coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-Fe 3 O 4 protective layer as skin onto polycarbonate (PC) substrate. Due to the synergistic light-to-heat conversion effects of MXene and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, as well as the thermal insulation effect of PDMS layer that prevent heat from diffusing into air, the obtained PC/MXene/PDMS-Fe 3 O 4 films (PMPF 0.5 ) exhibited a satisfying photothermal conversion performance (72.6 °C at 100 mW/cm 2 ) with high visible transmittance exceeding 54%. Moreover, the PDMS-Fe 3 O 4 coating endowed the film with high hydrophobicity (120°), expanding its application in humid environment. Combing with these excellent photothermal performance, transparency, flexibility and hydrophobicity, PMPF film exhibits a highly potential using in space thermal management, such as greenhouses.

Polystyrene microspheres compounded with polyethylene glycol–based hydrogel (PS-PEG)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings were prepared using the physical blending method. The chemical structure, surface and interface properties, interlayer adhesion, and tensile properties were tested in this paper. Furthermore, the antifouling performance was evaluated through bovine serum albumin fluorescent protein adsorption testing, marine bacteria adhesion testing, and benthic diatom adhesion testing. The results showed that the coating performance was best when 20 wt% PS-PEG hydrogel was added. Its surface energy was only 19.21 mJ/m 2 , the maximum breaking strength was 1.24 MPa, the maximum elongation rate was 675 %, the elastic modulus was 2.53 MPa, and the anti-stripping rate was 100 %. In addition, the coating with added 20 wt% PS-PEG hydrogel bacterial adherence rate was 5.36 % and 2.45 % after rinsing and washing, respectively, and the removal rate was 54.29 %. In the benthic diatom adhesion test , the chlorophyll concentration a-value was only 0.0017 mg/L after washing with added 20 wt% hydrogel, and the protein desorption rate was 84.19 % higher than PDMS in the fluorescent protein adsorption test. This coating has the ‘low adhesion’ and ‘desorption’ characteristics in the three growth stages of biofouling. Meanwhile, the low surface energy of the silicone is stable, and the hydrogel also dynamically migrates to the surface to gradually form a hydration layer, both are synergistic. When 20 wt% PS-PEG hydrogel was added, the coating demonstrated excellent antifouling performance due to its high hydration layer, low surface energy, high elasticity, and high interlayer adhesion. This research is expected to contribute to the practical applications of hydrogel coatings in marine antifouling.

Wound dressings, an effective tool for repairing injured skin and protecting it from secondary damage, have been widely manufactured. However, the design of wound dressings with waterproofness, breathability, mechanical robustness, and excellent biocompatibility remains a challenge due to the imbalance between the multiple desirable properties. Herein, a strategy is proposed to fabricate biocompatible membranes via a facile one-step electrospinning method. Polydimethylsiloxane-based polyurethane is effectively prepared to form durable hydrophobic surfaces , resulting in a high degree of hydrophobicity (141.0° water contact angle). The porous structure is enhanced by adjusting the solution concentration and heat treatment temperature, resulting in an optimal water vapor transmission rate of 8.2 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . Additionally, the membrane exhibits a hydrostatic pressure of 52.3 kPa, which is approximately 14.1 times greater than that of PU fibrous membrane , and an enhanced tensile strength of 6.60 MPa. Moreover, the membrane can be utilized in a wide temperature range from − 123 °C to 160 °C due to its low glass transition temperature and exceptional thermal stability. Significantly, both in vitro and in vivo studies confirmed the remarkable biocompatibility and minimal toxicity to normal cells and mice skin. Our work presents a new approach to designing waterproof and breathable biomaterials with high mechanical strength , thereby enhancing their performance and functionality in the biomedical field, particularly in wound dressing applications.

To achieve high sensitivity and uniformity simultaneously in a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, this paper presents the preparation of a flexible and transparent three-dimensional (3D) ordered hemispherical array polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. This is achieved by self-assembling a single-layer polystyrene (PS) microsphere array on a silicon substrate. The liquid-liquid interface method is then used to transfer Ag nanoparticles onto the PDMS film, which includes open nanocavity arrays created by etching the PS microsphere array. An open nanocavity assistant soft SERS sample, “Ag@PDMS,” is then prepared. For electromagnetic simulation of our sample, we utilized Comsol software. It has been experimentally confirmed that the Ag@PDMS substrate with silver particles of 50 nm in size is capable of achieving the largest localized electromagnetic hot spots in space. The optimal sample, Ag@PDMS, exhibits ultra-high sensitivity towards Rhodamine 6 G (R6G) probe molecules, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10−15 mol/L, and an enhancement factor (EF) of ∼1012. Additionally, the substrate exhibits a highly uniform signal intensity for probe molecules, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of approximately 6.86%. Moreover, it is capable of detecting multiple molecules and can perform real detection on non-flat surfaces.

The persistent challenge of removing viscous oil on water surfaces continues to pose a major concern and requires immediate attention. Here, a novel solution has been introduced in the form of a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic PDMS/SiO2aerogel fabric gathering device (SFGD). The SFGD is based on the adhesive and kinematic viscosity properties of oil, enabling self-driven collection of floating oil on the water surface. The SFGD is able to spontaneously capture the floating oil, selectively filter it, and sustainably collect it into its porous fabric interior through the synergistic effects of surface tension, gravity, and liquid pressure. This eliminates the need for auxiliary operations such as pumping, pouring, or squeezing. The SFGD demonstrates exceptional average recovery efficiencies of 94% for oils with viscosities ranging from 10 to 1000 mPa·s at room temperature, including dimethylsilicone oil, soybean oil, and machine oil. With its facile design, ease of fabrication, high recovery efficiency, excellent reclaiming capabilities, and scalability for multiple oil mixtures, the SFGD represents a significant advancement in the separation of immiscible oil/water mixtures of various viscosities and brings the separation process one step closer to practical application.

In this study, the effective large-scale deicing based on the interfacial toughness-tuning strategy of an ultraviolet-curable PDMS coating was developed. Methacrylate groups were grafted on the hydroxyl-terminated PDMS molecular chains to endow PDMS the response to UV irradiation. Then the precursor was doped with different proportions of silicon dioxide nanoparticle (SiO 2 NP) to tune the interfacial toughness between the coating and the ice layer. The PDMS coating was fabricated through manual spraying and the polymerization under UV irradiation. The effects of the amounts of the methacrylate groups and SiO 2 NP on the deicing properties of UV-curable PDMS coatings were investigated systematically. In addition, it was found that the large-scale deicing performance of the PDMS coating with 10% SiO 2 NP improved when lowering the ambient temperature, which was mainly related to the increase of the shear modulus and thermal residual stress on the interface and might indicate attractive advantage on the extremely cold environment. Meanwhile, the durability and the adaptability to different substrates of the PDMS coating were also examined for the verification of the possible practical application. In summary, the effective large-scale deicing based on the interfacial toughness tuning of a UV-curable PDMS coating was achieved and the coating showed great potential for practice.

Paper with simultaneous fire-resistance and hydrophobicity have greatly potential applications in the fields of packing, storage and delivering information, which attracts increasing attention recently. Different from the traditional cellulose-based paper which is extremely easily damaged by water and fire, a new type of highly flexible, fire-resistant and hydrophobic paper based on Si 3 N 4 nanowires and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is reported. Specially, the Si 3 N 4 @PDMS core-shell nanowires with 3D interlocking structure are designed, in which the Si 3 N 4 nanowires act as the inorganic fire-resistant frameworks and the PDMS shell with low surface energy provides the hydrophobic surface . The Si 3 N 4 @PDMS core-shell nanowires are intertwined and interlaced to form a highly flexible Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper. The tensile strength of Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper is 6.19 MPa, indicating the good mechanical property. The obtained Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper has the characteristics of writability, fire-resistance and hydrophobicity. The high thermal stability of Si 3 N 4 nanowires makes Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper exhibit excellent fire resistance. No obvious change is observed for the commercial paper with Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper as the fire-shielding layer after heating for 30 min. In addition, the contact angles of water droplets are all greater than 110° over the surfaces of Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper after mechanical damages, chemical corrosions and thermal treatments. Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper can be used in oil/water separation and oil collection. More importantly, Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper can be used for writing without being damaged by fire or water. The present work may inspire the development and application of functional paper and is expected to become a breakthrough in the traditional paper industry.

Superhydrophobic conductive materials have attracted much attention because of their wide applications in oil–water separation, electromagnetic shielding, and human motion detection. Herein, we adopt a facile method to prepare a superhydrophobic conductive fabric. In brief, the composite fabric is composed of a cheap and elastic textile base, an interface layer polydopamine (PDA), functional layer aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) and Cu nanoparticles, and low surface energy materials such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In this method, we encapsulate Cu nanoparticles on the surface of ACNTs, which improves the electrical conductivity of the fabric. PDMS could not only protect the indicated Cu nanoparticles from oxidation but also endow the fabric with superhydrophobicity and thus corrosion resistance. The results show that the PDA/ACNTs/Cu/PDMS fabric can maintain good electrical conductivity and excellent chemical stability and mechanical durability even after bending (500 times), solution immersion, and water washing. Furthermore, the combination of superhydrophobicity and electrical conductivity endows the PDA/ACNTs/Cu/PDMS fabric with an excellent electrocaloric effect and deicing performance. More interestingly, the prepared fabric can also be used to monitor human movements. This superhydrophobic conductive fabric has potential application prospects as waterproof materials, wearable electronics, heaters, and in other fields.
