Efficient Red Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes Realized by PEDOT:PSS-Free Ternary Blended Hole-Transport Layers with a Lowered Energy Barrier and Suppressed Leakage

Xinyu Zhang,Junlei Yin,Yuan Chen,Xingquan Zhu,Wenjie Lu,Zijian Guo,Chunyan Yang,Heng Zhang

Quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) have recently approached over 20% external quantum efficiency (EQE); however, maintaining sustained carrier balance remains challenging due to inefficient hole injection caused by the deep valence band of quantum dots. Inspired by bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) hole-transport layers (HTLs) that simultaneously enhance hole mobility and suppress electron leakage, we herein introduce a ternary polymer blended HTL composed of PTAA, TFB, and Poly-TPD. A staircase of nearly degenerate HOMO levels (∼5.20, ∼5.31, and ∼5.46 eV) funnels holes from ITO to QDs while simultaneously raising an energy barrier that blocks electron leakage. Furthermore, the omission of the PEDOT:PSS layer instantly boosts the transmittance of the PTAA:Poly-TPD:TFB film. Consequently, red QLEDs fabricated with this ternary blended HTL achieved a peak EQE of 26.01%, a maximum luminance of 378,700 cd/m2. The operational lifetime of the QLEDs with the ternary blended HTL was extended by 2.22 times compared to that of conventional control devices. Our work elucidates the critical role of HTL engineering in minimizing exciton quenching and provides a generalizable design strategy for high-efficiency electroluminescent devices.

A stretchable and adhesive composite hydrogel containing PEDOT:PSS for wide-range and precise motion sensing and electromagnetic interference shielding and as a triboelectric nanogenerator

Zixuan Zhou,Weizhong Yuan,Xiaoyun Xie

Flexible conductive hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and stable electrical conductivity are ideal candidates for bioelectronic devices. However, the development of modern electronic products has higher requirements in terms of functionality of the materials. Herein, a composite hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyacrylic acid (PAA) and the conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS was developed, and the addition of tannic acid (TA) made the hydrogel possess good adhesion. The hydrogel exhibits excellent flexibility (640%, 123.1 kJ m−3) and electrical conductivity and can be adhered to various substrates with an adhesion strength of 14.97 kPa. In addition, benefiting from its excellent electrical conductivity and high-water content, the PVA/PAA-PEDOT:PSS-TA conductive hydrogel has an excellent EMI shielding effect. The PVA/PAA-PEDOT:PSS-TA hydrogel sensor can not only successfully detect various signals from human motion, but also express sign language through electrical signals when it was attached to five fingers, which provides a new idea for its application as a flexible wearable device for the deaf or hard-of-hearing people who do not speak verbally and under special situations. Importantly, this hydrogel can also act as a flexible triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with an adjustable output voltage for energy harvesting. This work was expected to provide avenues for the development of new intelligent systems for health monitoring and energy harvesting.

Interfacial modulation strategy using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and ultrathin two-dimensional metal–organic framework nanosheets for wearable supercapacitors: Solution engineering

Binxuan Diao,Fuhao Jiang,Heqing Ye,Rui Wang,Hongjiang Li,Haoran Zhang,Sang Woo Joo,Chenhao Cong,Se Hyun Kim,Xinlin Li

Two-dimensional metal – organic frameworks (2D MOFs) hold great promise as electrochemically active materials. However, their application in MOF nanocomposite electrodes in solution engineering is limited by structural self-stacking and imperfect conductive pathways. In this study, we used meso -tetra(4-carboxyphenyl ) porphine (TCPP) with off-domain π-bonds to reconstitute Zn-TCPP (ZMOF) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) through an interfacial modulation strategy involving electrostatic coupling and hydrogen bonding, creating a conductive composite with a nanosheet structure. The negatively charged PSS and ZMOF formed a three-dimensional interconnected conductive network with excellent interfaces. The positively charged PEDOT, fine tuned with the lamellar structure, established strong π-π stacking interactions between the porphyrin and thiophene rings. ZMOF also induced changes in the PEDOT chain structure, weakening PSS entanglement and enhancing charge-transport properties. The specific capacitance of the prepared supercapacitor was as high as 967.8 F g −1 . Flexible supercapacitors produced on a large scale using dispensing printing technology exhibited an energy density of 1.85 μWh cm −2 and a power density of 7.08 μW cm −2 . This interfacial modulation strategy also exhibited excellent wearable properties, with 96 % capacitance retention at a 180° bending angle and stable cycling performance. This study presented a significant advancement in the functionalization of 2D materials, highlighting their potential for device-grade capacitive architectures.

PEDOT/PSS Heterointerface Enables Integrated Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Thermal Protection in Aerogel Composite

Ziwen Sun,Quan Yuan,Liwei Yan,Junyu Lu,Weiyi Ding,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

Traditional high-density thermal protection systems (TPSs) limit the maneuverability of hypersonic vehicles while lacking stealth capabilities. In this work, we propose a strategy to integrate electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal protection in an aerogel composite by introducing a PEDOT:PSS heterointerface via ethanol-assisted gel impregnation. Ethanol also functions as secondary doping, enabling tuning of the electromagnetic parameters of the aerogel by adjusting the doping level. This can achieve a balance between microwave attenuation and impedance matching in the aerogel, leading to excellent broadband microwave absorption with a minimum reflection loss of −37 dB at 30 mm thickness and an effective bandwidth of 13.3 GHz. During ablation, the PEDOT:PSS heterointerface can also induce a thermal blocking effect that can suppress the melting of high-silica fiber, helping maintain the three-dimensional skeletal support of fiber felt, thereby enhancing the aerogel composite’s resistance to oxyacetylene flame attack. Therefore, the aerogel composite exhibits a low linear ablation rate of 0.03 mm/s under 1 MW/m2 and, after 96 s of exposure to 1800 °C flame, maintains a backside temperature of only 61 °C. This work provides a feasible strategy for achieving integrated electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal protection in aerogel composites, which has potential for next-generation lightweight TPS applications.

Robust Neural Interfaces with Photopatternable, Bioadhesive, and Highly Conductive Hydrogels for Stable Chronic Neuromodulation

Ming Yang,Ping Chen,Xinyu Qu,Fuchi Zhang,Shan Ning,Li Ma,Kun Yang,Yuming Su,Jianfeng Zang,Wei Jiang,Ting Yu,Xiaochen Dong,Zhiqiang Luo

A robust neural interface with intimate electrical coupling between neural electrodes and neural tissues is critical for stable chronic neuromodulation. The development of bioadhesive hydrogel neural electrodes is a potential approach for tightly fixing the neural electrodes on the epineurium surface to construct a robust neural interface. Herein, we construct a photopatternable, antifouling, conductive (∼6 S cm–1), bioadhesive (interfacial toughness ∼100 J m–2), soft, and elastic (∼290% strain, Young’s modulus of 7.25 kPa) hydrogel to establish a robust neural interface for bioelectronics. The UV-sensitive zwitterionic monomer can facilitate the formation of an electrostatic-assembled conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS network, and it can be further photo-cross-linked into elastic polymer network. Such a semi-interpenetrating network endows the hydrogel electrodes with good conductivity. Especially, the photopatternable feature enables the facile microfabrication processes of multifunctional hydrogel (MH) interface with a characteristic size of 50 μm. The MH neural electrodes, which show improved performance of impedance, charge storage capacity, and charge injection capability, can produce effective electrical stimulation with high current density (1 mA cm–2) at ultralow voltages (±25 mV). The MH interface could realize high-efficient electrical communication at the chronic neural interface for stable recording and stimulation of a sciatic nerve in the rat model.

Simultaneous Improvement of Efficiency and Lifetime of Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with a Bilayer Hole Injection Layer Consisting of PEDOT:PSS and Solution-Processed WO3

Ling Chen,Shujie Wang,Dongdong Li,Yan Fang,Huaibin Shen,Linsong Li,Zuliang Du

Even though chemically stable metal oxides (MOs), as substitutes for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), have been successfully adopted for improving device stability in solution-processed quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), the efficiencies of QLEDs are at a relatively low level. In this work, a novel architecture of QLEDs has been introduced, in which inorganic/organic bilayer hole injection layers (HILs) were delicately designed by inserting an amorphous WO3 interlayer between PEDOT:PSS and the indium tin oxide anode. As a result, the efficiency and operational lifetime of QLEDs were improved simultaneously. The results show that the novel architecture QLEDs relative to conventional PEDOT:PSS-based QLEDs have an enhanced external quantum efficiency by a factor of 50%, increasing from 8.31 to 12.47%, meanwhile exhibit a relatively long operational lifetime (12 551 h) and high maximum brightness (>40 000 cd m–2) resulting from a better pathway for hole injection with staircase energy-level alignment of the HILs and reduction of surface roughness. Our results demonstrate that the novel architecture QLEDs using bilayer MO/PEDOT:PSS HILs can achieve long operational lifetime without sacrificing efficiency.

Construction of a Layered-Cavity Structure via Spin-Coating a PEDOT:PSS/PEO/SWCNT Suspension onto PBAT/MWCNT Electrospun Films and the Enhanced Electromagnetic Shielding Performance

Min Zhao,Fahu Yang,Dinggao Wang,Chao Zhang,Shaomin Zhou,Lin Li,Zhongming Li,Haili Zhao,Tao Chen

The development of porous films with biodegradability, high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and thermal conducting performance for advanced electronics is urgent. Herein, a superthin and flexible film composed of PBAT/MWCNT and PEDOT:PSS/PEO/SWCNT is fabricated through combining electrospinning and spin-coating. In this work, the content of PEO and SWCNT should be controlled to 1 and 10 wt % for achieving the optimal layered-cavity structure within the film, guaranteeing the proper flow ability of the suspension. The robustly constructed layered-cavity structure within the film allows the electromagnetic waves to suffer multiple reflections, which enhances the EMI shielding performance. Meanwhile, the structure also plays an important role in promoting the electric and heat conduction of the film. Consequently, the film with a thickness of 0.14 mm exhibits the most optimal EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of 26.02 dB, electrical conductivity of 40.371 S/m, and thermal diffusion coefficient of 0.124 mm2/s. The EMI SE/thickness is about 185.86 dB/mm, attaining a cutting-edge level compared to reported polymer-based films. Besides, the PEO or SWCNT content should be controlled, and the two-side spin-coating is also needed for thicker films. This work offers a method to develop superthin biodegradable films with excellent performance, positioning it as a strong alternative for flexible electronics.

High-Sensitivity Flexible Sensors Based on Island-Bridge Configuration for Real-Time Posture Monitoring Systems

Ning Ding,Yan Bai,Zhen You,Shiyan Wang,Longlu Wang,Weiwei Zhao,Yuhui Feng,Feifei Lin,Yuzhe Chen,Xiang Zou,Xiaoyuan Jia,Mengyue Jiang,Wen Lv,Shujuan Liu,Qiang Zhao

High-sensitivity, flexible sensors are crucial for precise posture monitoring in wearable electronics. Conventional single conductive network hydrogels suffer from limited strain-impedance response due to isolated conductive fillers. Herein, we propose a novel conjugative effect-assisted internal island-bridge mechanism to construct a sophisticated binary conductive network through p−π stacking and electrostatic interaction between MXene islands and PEDOT:PSS bridges. This island-bridge configuration enables effective disruption and restoration during deformation, overcoming the limitations of single conductive networks. Optimized PVA/MXene/PEDOT:PSS (PMP) hydrogels achieve remarkable 188% increase in conductivity (σ = 21.09 S cm–1) and 98% improvement in sensitivity (GF = 2.31). This exceptional strain-impedance response allows for precise detection of complex joint movements. Furthermore, we developed a lightweight (31 g), low-power (40 mW) wearable posture monitoring system (WPMS) integrating PMP sensors with wireless communication modules for real-time health management through postural analysis and correction. This work presents a theoretical framework for designing high-sensitivity flexible sensors based on island-bridge configurations, advancing the intersection of healthcare and wearable electronics.

A Multilayer Interlaced Ag Nanosheet Film Prepared by an Electrodeposition Method on a PPy@PEDOT:PSS Film: A Strategy to Prepare Sensitive Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates

Xueqin Wang,Anjiang Lu,Zhongchen Bai,Tianwen Xu

A highly sensitive multilayer interlaced silver (Ag) nanosheet (MISN) film was prepared on a PPy@PEDOT:PSS film via an electrodeposition method for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. After the PPy@PEDOT:PSS film was pretreated with ascorbic acid solution, many sparse Ag nanoparticles (NPs) could be directly reduced on the surface of the PPy@PEDOT:PSS film in AgNO3 solution. Then, the MISN film was directionally grown along the surface of sparse Ag NPs by using an electrochemical galvanostatic method to form a Ag/PPy@PEDOT:PSS film for a SERS substrate. The results indicated that with the increase in electrodeposition time, the density of Ag nanosheets was also increased for boosting the SERS effect. Accordingly, owing to the directional growth of Ag NPs, the increase in the length–width ratio of single Ag nanosheets would further promote the SERS signal of the substrate. Moreover, the maximum enhancement factor of the SERS substrate could reach to 12,478, and the minimum limit of detection of melamine solution was down to 5.42 ng/mL. The SERS sensitivity of the Ag nanosheet film reached 100.65. This method of preparing the SERS substrate provides a novel and robust strategy for the low-cost and high-sensitivity detection in biomedicine, drugs, and food.

A Novel PDMS-Based Flexible Thermoelectric Generator Fabricated by Ag2Se and PEDOT:PSS/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with High Output Performance Optimized by Embedded Eutectic Gallium–Indium Electrodes

Rui Guo,Weipeng Shi,Rui Guo,Chenyu Yang,Yi Chen,Yonghua Wang,Danfeng Cui,Dan Liu,Chenyang Xue

Flexible thermoelectric generators (FTEGs), which can overcome the energy supply limitations of wearable devices, have received considerable attention. However, the use of toxic Te-based materials and fracture-prone electrodes constrains the application of FTEGs. In this study, a novel Ag2Se and Poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) FTEG with a high output performance and good flexibility is developed. The thermoelectric columns formulated in the work are environmentally friendly and reliable. The key enabler of this work is the use of embedded EGaIn electrodes, which increase the temperature difference collected by the thermoelectric column, thereby improving the FTEG output performance. Additionally, the embedded EGaIn electrodes could be directly printed on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds without wax paper, which simplifies the preparation process of FTEGs and enhances the fabrication efficiency. The FTEG with embedded electrodes exhibits the highest output power density of 25.83 μW/cm2and the highest output power of 10.95 μW at ΔT= 15 K. The latter is 31.6% higher than that of silver-based FTEGs and 2.5% higher than that of covered EGaIn-based FTEGs. Moreover, the prepared FTEG has an excellent flexibility (>1500 bends) and output power stability (>30 days). At high humidity and high temperature, the prepared FTEG maintains good performance. These results demonstrate that the prepared FTEGs can be used as a stable and environmentally friendly energy supply for wearable devices.

All-in-one flexible paper-based self-powered energy and display system employing complementary properties of printed PEDOT:PSS/PANI:PSS dual-electrode with a dual-sided triboelectric nanogenerator

Guodong Liu,Yaoli Wang,Qingjun Meng,Zhijian Li,Zijian Wang,Zhuoqing Zhang,Hanbin Liu

A Self-powered energy and display system (SPEDS) has been developed by integrating functionalities of energy harvesting , storage, and multicolor display, heralding innovative solutions for integrated electronic devices. An all-in-one multi-information SPEDS is proposed through incorporating a multicolor electrochromic supercapacitor device (ESCD) with a dual-sided triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), all screen-printed on a paper substrate. The synergistic enhancement in the conductive, capacitive, and electrochromic performance is realized by exploiting the complementary properties of PEDOT:PSS/PANI:PSS to form a simplified structure of ESCD, in which the electrode and electrochromic layers are integrated into one shared layer, resulting in a wide color gamut and an enhanced capacitive performance of 3.4 mF/cm². Electrochromic electrodes having identical composition exhibit independent color changes at the anode and cathode , thereby featuring a combined color display indicating multi energy-related information. Moreover, the conductive layer fabricated through patterned printing on the paper substrate, serves as both the electrode layer for TENG and the interconnect circuitry with the prepared ESCD. Furthermore, a double-sided TENG was realized by exploiting the triboelectric properties of the paper substrate and then a self-powered energy display wristband was constructed, exemplifying a novelty application utilizing the multi-information indicator properties for energy display derived from the dual-sided friction power generation .

Solution-Processed Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Anode Interface Layer for High-Performance Organic Photodiodes

Jianhua Xiao,Yang Wang,Huiling Tai,Yadong Jiang,Lijun Tang

The solution-processing technology of organic photodiodes (OPDs) stands as a core advantage distinguishing them from conventional silicon-based devices, offering several design opportunities for macroscopic structural innovations such as special-shaped, large-area, and flexible architectures. The anode interface layer (AIL), an indispensable component in OPD, is highly desired for processing techniques and physicochemical compatibility to meet the demands of high-performance devices. However, viable alternatives to the commercial material PEDOT:PSS remain scarce, with the narrow selection pool of solution-processed AIL materials. Here, a novel solution-processed organic–inorganic hybrid AIL (D149:Cu) is developed with tunable physicochemical properties, which combines the stability/high carrier mobility of inorganic components with the biocompatibility/flexibility of organic counterparts. The D149:Cu layer optimizes interfacial contact and energy level alignment, effectively enhancing photo-generated hole transport while suppressing dark-state electron injection from external circuit, thereby enabling OPDs with lower dark current (4.96 × 10 −9 vs 1.19 × 10 −7 A cm −2 ) and higher specific detectivity (9.09 × 10 12 vs 1.62 × 10 12 Jones) compared to PEDOT:PSS counterparts. Moreover, flexible D149:Cu-based OPD (≈51 µm-thick) is demonstrated, showing exceptional operational stability under mechanical flexing of 1500 bending cycles. This work alleviates the selection limitations of AILs in optoelectronic devices.
