Polymer-based composites with effective heat dissipation and ideal electromagnetic interference shielding performance have gradually become an essential research focus in modern electronic industry. Herein, a method is reported by constructing 3D microscope continuous filler network into polyetherimide (PEI) matrix via incorporating function graphite nanoplatelets (GNP) with PEI microspheres , and then fillers are distributed beyond the domain area of polymer and leaded to continuous filler framework. The fabricated composites exhibit effective thermal conductivity (4.77 W m −1 K −1 ), great EMI effectiveness (42.7 dB), ideal electrical conductivity and profound thermal property . Different scale of polymer microspheres will also change the micro-architecture from “filler-wrapped polymer” structure to “polymer-wrapped filler” structure, resulting in various thermal performance and electrical property. Finite element simulation is further employed to explore the relationship between microsphere scale and heat transfer behavior. In a word, great comprehensive performance endows PEI composites broaden prospect on the potential applications in the fields of electronic equipment.

Quickly discriminating different segmented Baijiu can directly control its grade and indirectly affect the quality of the finished Baijiu. A fluorescence sensor array was constructed based on PEI-terminated silver nanoparticles and lanthanide metal ions (PEI@Ag NPs@Ln). Ag NPs were stably dispersed in the PEI-woven network, initially accompanied by excellent fluorescence signals. Organic molecules disrupted the PEI structure and dragged the Ag NPs out. The free Ag NPs sintered or aggregated with the diffusion, resulting in fluorescence quenching. The three lanthanide ions speed up the process, allowing different organic molecules to exhibit more distinct signals. Thus, this sensor was used to map 11 organic molecules’ fingerprints and to discriminate segmented Baijiu. The whole process takes only 2 min. With the assistance of pattern recognition, segmented Baijiu from three cellars were successfully discriminated. Fast, effective and simple are highlights, which opens up its practical application potential in the detection field.

Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions. Therefore, the removal of this contaminant from wastewater is of particular importance. Herein, a novel zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles based electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyethylenimine (PEI) nanofibrous composite membranes (NCMs) were prepared and characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA and other characterization techniques. The NCMs were tested for the adsorption of Cr(VI) from water. Results showed that the inclusion of PEI tailored the surface of the NCM to be superhydrophilic. The prepared electrospun NCM showed a high adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) (up to 403.5 mg·g −1 ) under ZIF-8 concentration of 5 wt%. More importantly, introducing ZIF-8 up to 5 % did not only increase the adsorption capacity but also enhanced the thermal stability, mechanical strength, and structure of the NCM. The experimental analysis of co-existing ions and the reusability of up to ten cycles showed that the optimized PAN/PEI@ZIF-8 NCM exhibited good selectivity and excellent stability for wastewater treatment. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm could be fitted well by the Langmuir model. Thermodynamics revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism was found to be mainly electrostatic attraction and reduction. This study demonstrated the potential of ZIF-8-incorporated PAN/PEI NCMs for the removal of Cr(VI) from water.

A novel electrochemical platform composed of water soluble polyethylene imine-reduced graphene oxide (PEI-rGO) composites and cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) based on layer-by-layer (LBL) technique has been triumphantly developed. The PEI-rGO composites could effectively improve the electron transfer ability between the assembled enzyme and the surface of electrode. Furthermore, LBL technique could immobilize more enzyme under mild conditions, which was benefit to keep the bioactivity of redox enzyme. TEM, UV–vis and FT-IR showed that the PEI-rGO composites behaved as individual nanosheet structure and were successfully prepared. The self-assembly process of (ChOx/PEI-rGO) n film was monitored by UV–vis spectroscopy, demonstrating that the ChOx had been immobilized orderly without denaturation. Owing to the good conductivity of the PEI-rGO composites, the electron transfer ability of the immobilized ChOx was greatly improved on glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The PEI/(ChOx/PEI-rGO) 3 /GCE showed excellent electrochemical performances toward the detection of cholesterol. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated electrode exhibited a wide linear range in the cholesterol concentration from 0.10 × 10 −6 to 9.331 × 10 −3 mol L −1 with a detection limit of 0.021 μmol L −1 estimated at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant ( K m ) was 0.0431 mmol L −1 . This result indicated that a good affinity between the immobilized ChOx and the cholesterol. Meanwhile, the biosensor presented good stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability with good recoveries for real sample detection.

Polyethylenimine (PEI) impregnated MCM-48 samples without calcination (MCM-48-W) whose pores are covered with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB with long-alkyl chains) were verified to be more efficient CO2 adsorbents than PEI impregnated conventional MCM-48 samples. The samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Also, CO2 adsorption behaviors including adsorption capacity, adsorption thermodynamics, and adsorbent stability were studied to reveal the CO2 adsorption performance on as-synthesized PEI supported materials. The experimental results indicated that the CO2 adsorption and amine efficiency of MCM-48-W were always higher than those of conventional MCM-48 samples at the same PEI loading. MCM-48-W impregnated with 40 wt % PEI (MCM-48-W(40)) exhibited 2.59 mmol·g–1 of CO2 adsorption capacity (6.9 mmol CO2/g PEI), the highest amine efficiency ever reported for MCM-48 impregnated PEI in pure CO2, which may be because the existence of long-alkyl chains improved the dispersion of PEI loading. We presented a simple strategy with the advantages of less consumption of PEI and omission of the calcination step for the improvement of PEI dispersion on MCM-48 with long-alkyl chains template for high efficiency CO2 adsorption.

Heteroaggregation between magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and cells is a crucial precondition for the harvesting and separation of algae from the aquatic environment . However, separation mechanisms have not been fully elaborated in previous studies, especially regarding cyanobacteria coated with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The present study was conducted to investigate the interaction between PEI-coated iron-oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and M. aeruginosa as a function of cell type (FACHB-1343 and FACHB-905) and cells with/without extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The results demonstrated that harvesting efficiency (HE) varied with the different cell types with/without EPS surrounding the cyanobacteria. The PEI-coated IONPs showed higher HE for M9 than for M1 with the same mass ratio of NPs/cyanobacteria. Furthermore, EPS significantly affected the HE because of their heterogeneous composition, which was interpreted by spectral analysis and the DLVO theory. Overall, this study provides guidance on cyanobacteria harvesting with different environmental conditions when employing magnetic separation technology.

Bone damage results from the imbalance of bone homeostasis maintained by osteoblast-regulated bone formation and osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Conventional drug therapy and gene therapy may not optimally regulate the bone remodeling process due to the unitary pharmacological mechanism of drug and the safety and targeting of gene vectors. In the present study, multifunctional fluorescent alendronate-polyethyleneimine carbon dots (Alen-PEI CDs) are innovatively synthesized, which have excellent biocompatibility, selective bone targeting, gene carrying capacity, and anti-bone absorption effect. As gene vectors, bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2) gene-loaded Alen-PEI CDs greatly enhance osteoblast differentiation and bone regeneration. Notably, Alen-PEI CDs are found to directly inhibit the formation and function of osteoclasts, effectively attenuating the LPS-induced skull osteolysis in mice. Furthermore, their cumulative toxicity is lower than that of Alen, indicating their potential as an anti-bone resorptive nanodrug. These results show that the bone-targeting Alen-PEI CDs significantly reverse the imbalance of bone homeostasis through a dual-directional mechanism—directly suppressing bone resorption and indirectly inducing bone formation by transfection of osteogenic therapeutic genes. Overall, the study expands the application for carbon dots in biomedicine, providing new insights for the further development of novel selectively targeted multifunctional nanodrugs for the treatment of bone-destructive diseases.

A silicon dioxide/polytetrafluoroethylene/polyethyleneimine/polyphenylene sulfide (SiO2/PTFE/PEI/PPS) composite filter medium with three-dimensional network structures was fabricated by using PPS nonwoven as the substrate which was widely employed as a cleanable filter medium. The PTFE/PEI bilayers were firstly coated on the surfaces of the PPS fibers through the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique ten times, followed by the deposition of SiO2nanoparticles, yielding the SiO2/(PTFE/PEI)10/PPS composite material. The contents of the PTFE component were easily controlled by adjusting the number of self-assembled PTFE/PEI bilayers. As compared with the pure PPS nonwoven, the obtained SiO2/(PTFE/PEI)10/PPS composite material exhibits better mechanical properties and enhanced wear, oxidation and heat resistance. When employed as a filter material, the SiO2/(PTFE/PEI)10/PPS composite filter medium exhibited excellent filtration performance for fine particulate. The PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 μm) filtration efficiency reached up to 99.55%. The superior filtration efficiency possessed by the SiO2/(PTFE/PEI)10/PPS composite filter medium was due to the uniformly modified PTFE layers, which played a dual role in fine particulate filtration. On the one hand, the PTFE layers not only increase the specific surface area and pore volume of the composite filter material but also narrow the spaces between the fibers, which were conducive to forming the dust cake quickly, resulting in intercepting the fine particles more efficiently than the pure PPS filter medium. On the other hand, the PTFE layers have low surface energy, which is in favor of the detachment of dust cake during pulse-jet cleaning, showing superior reusability. Thanks to the three-dimensional network structures of the SiO2/(PTFE/PEI)10/PPS composite filter medium, the pressure drop during filtration was low. Keywords:polytetrafluoroethylene;polyphenylene sulfide;filter medium;PM2.5;layer-by-layer self-assembly

Nanofiltration membrane with good separation performance can effectively remove dyes from wastewater. A new type of composite membrane (TiO 2 /PEI/PDA-SMA/PES), which possesses excellent dye/salt separation property, was facilely manufactured by a combined strategy of mixing styrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) with polyethersulfone (PES), polydopamine (PDA) coating, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 )/polyethylenimine (PEI) co-deposition and cross-linking. The as-prepared membranes were characterized using SEM, AFM , FTIR , surface zeta potential , water permeability and contact angle measurement. The effect of TiO 2 content on permeability and retention of membrane was discussed. Results demonstrate that TiO 2 /PEI/PDA-SMA/PES membrane is hydrophilic and positively charged, and it exhibits high permeability for pure water (73.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), reasonable retention to dyes (98.6%, 92.3% and 90.4% for Congo Red, Rhodamine B and Crystal violet, respectively) and satisfactory transport to salts (39.5, 36.4, 30.6 and 29.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 for Na 2 SO 4 , NaCl, MgSO 4 and MgCl 2 , respectively). In addition, the membrane shows a great antifouling performance and long-term stability during the filtration of dye/salt simulated wastewaters. Further, the membrane is used to treat actual textile wastewater. It also shows good separation performance (permeability 10.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , COD retention 98.2%, and color retention 99.7%). Perhaps it is fit for potential treatment of textile wastewater.

The development of molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) has promoted applications of membrane-based separation technology, which has shown considerable advantages in water treatment, chemical separation and drug purification. Herein, imitated core–shell PEI@SiO2-based enoxacin-imprinted nanocomposite membranes (SPEIMs) were developed by mixing polyethylenimene-modified silica nanoparticles with polyvinylidene fluoride powder under freezing operation. As a typical and hazardous water pollutant, enoxacin was selected as the template molecule. Morphology and chemical characterizations were explored for an insightful analysis of the obtained membranes. Based on the organic–inorganic hybrid strategy, the as-prepared SPEIMs exhibited superior selectivity towards the target (enoxacin). Satisfactory adsorption performance (55.94 mg g−1), permeability (3.22 for norfloxacin/enoxacin and 7.07 for ciprofloxacin/enoxacin) and regeneration performance (90.31%) were achieved onto SPEIMs. The products and methods obtained in this work would potentially enrich the applications of MIMs in pollution control and biochemical separation.

The nondestructive functionalization of aramid fiber is an important research direction. In this study, a kind of benzimidazole-contained aramid fiber, Poly- p -phenylene-benzimidazole-terephthalamide (PBIA) fiber, was modified by the coordination of benzimidazole unit in fiber structure with Fe 3+ . Further, the coordinatively unsaturated sites of Fe 3+ endow the modified fiber with active sites for the grafting of PEI. Model compound of PBIA unit, PBA, was utilized to confirm the whole process of modification. In comparison with that of the untreated fiber, the IFSS value of fiber with PEI grafted has an increase by 47%, owing to the chemical bond formed on the fiber/epoxy interface and the better wettability of resin to fiber. In all, the study presents a nondestructive functionalization of aramid fiber and can be employed in the modification of other benzimidazole-contained substrates.

The greatest crux in the combination of chemotherapy and gene therapy is the construction of a feasible and biocompatible carrier for loading the therapeutic drug and gene simultaneously. Here, a new amphiphilic bifunctional pullulan derivative (named as PDP) synthesized by grafting lipophilic desoxycholic acid and low-molecular weight (1 kDa) branched polyethylenimine onto the backbone of pullulan was evaluated as a nano-carrier for the co-delivery of drug and gene for potential cancer therapy. PDP exhibited good blood compatibility and low cytotoxicity in the hemolysis and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays, respectively. By self-assembly process, the amphiphilic PDP polymer formed cationic core-shell nanomicelles in aqueous solution with an average diameter of 160.8 nm and a zeta potential of approximate 28 mV. The PDP micelles had relative higher drug encapsulation efficiency (84.05%) and loading capacity (7.64%) for doxorubicin (DOX), an effective anti-tumor drug, demonstrating sustained drug release profile and good DNA-binding ability. The flow cytometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that PDP/DOX micelles could be successfully internalized by MCF-7 cells, and presenting higher cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells than that of free DOX. Furthermore, PDP micelles could efficiently transport tumor suppressor gene p53 into MCF-7 cells, and the expressed exogenous p53 protein induced MCF-7 cells to die. More excitedly, in comparison with single DOX or p53 delivery, the co-delivery of DOX and gene p53 using PDP micelles displayed higher cytotoxicity, induced higher apoptosis rate of tumor cells and blocked more effectively the migration of cancer cells in vitro . In tumor-bearing mice, co-delivery of DOX and p53 also exhibited enhanced antitumor efficacy as compared with single delivery of DOX or p53 alone. In summary, these results demonstrated that it is highly promising to use cationic PDP micelles for effectively co-delivering functional gene and chemotherapeutic agent, and thus improving antitumor efficacy and systemic toxicity.
