Utilization of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) depolymerization products as binders for ballpoint pen ink: preparation, optimization, and performance evaluation

Kim Ri Myong,Ryang Il Song,Oh Jun Hyok,Kim Jong Nam,Kim Yong Il,Kim Guk Chan,Ho Kuang Min,Hong Son Il,Son Ryong Chol

This study presents a sustainable approach for upcycling waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into a functional binder for ballpoint pen ink. PET was depolymerized via glycerolysis under systematically optimized conditions: PET-to-glycerol mass ratio of 1:1.1, catalyst loading of 0.6 wt%, temperature of 230 °C, and reaction time of 4 h. Comprehensive characterization by FT-IR, HPLC, and GPC elucidated the structural features and molecular composition of the depolymerization products. FT-IR confirmed the presence of hydroxyl end groups and preservation of ester linkages, providing evidence for a transesterification-based depolymerization mechanism. GPC analysis revealed a number-average molecular weight (M n ) of approximately 1,800 g/mol, confirming successful cleavage of PET chains into oligomeric fragments suitable for binder applications. HPLC analysis of the reaction effluent further corroborated the proposed reaction pathway, offering insights into the by-products generated during depolymerization. The formulated ink exhibited excellent performance characteristics: appropriate viscosity, rapid drying (≤ 19 s), thermal stability across − 20 to 40 °C, UV resistance exceeding 72 h, and storage stability over 340 days. These properties meet critical industry standards, demonstrating the practical viability of the upcycled product. This study successfully establishes a practical route to converting PET waste into commercially valuable materials, providing a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional petrochemical binders in the stationery industry while contributing to plastic pollution reduction. Fabrication of PDMS-ZPZ-PET Multifunctional Fabric and Its Synergetic Enhancement of Superhydrophobicity, Broadband Microwave Absorption, and Photothermal Conversion

Zhenjie Wang,Runzheng Liu,Zhishuai Wang,Xiyu Song,Yuxuan Wang,Ruyi Xie

With the increasingly severe electromagnetic wave (EMW) pollution, developing comfortable and durable multifunctional electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) textiles has become an urgent need. In this work, a functional textile integrating superhydrophobicity, EWA performance, and photothermal property was successfully fabricated via the atomized spraying method. A ZIF-8/PPy/ZIF-8 (ZPZ) sandwich structure was constructed on polyester (PET) fabric, followed by surface modification with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the ZPZ structure, the middle PPy layer contributes to dielectric loss. ZIF-8 constructs a macroscopic multilevel scattering framework to optimize impedance matching, while it provides high-density polarization sites to enhance dielectric loss, which achieves broadband strong absorption. At a thickness of 3.4 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) is −54.55 dB and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) is 7.92 GHz. PDMS can not only adjust the complex impedance coefficient for electromagnetic wave absorption, but also offers a self-cleaning property and durable superhydrophobicity to protect the stability of the internal structure, capable of withstanding repeated washing, abrasion, and chemical erosion. Additionally, the conjugated molecular structure in PPy features abundant delocalized π electrons and a narrow band gap. PDMS-ZPZ-PET fabric demonstrates highly efficient and stable photothermal performance over multiple cycles. This simple and effective preparation method offers a research direction for the advancement of high-performance EWA textiles.

PET imaging-guided biomimetic nanoplatform reprograms the tumor immune microenvironment and disrupts stromal barriers to potentiate immunotherapy in malignancy

Yuan Feng,Wenyu Song,Zhaoguo Lin,Zihan Zhang,Wenzhu Hu,Xingyi Wang,Yueling Deng,Yongkang Gai,Zi Ye,Dawei Jiang,Xiaoli Lan,Xiao Zhang

The fibrotic tumor microenvironment (TME) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses a major obstacle to immunotherapy by restricting immune cell infiltration and promoting immune evasion. Here, we develop a biomimetic nanoplatform (CPZT) that combines homologous cancer cell membrane camouflage with pH-responsive drug delivery, enabling tumor-specific and sustained antifibrotic activity within the fibrotic TME. Encapsulation of the antifibrotic agent tranilast within a ZIF-8 core achieves spatiotemporally controlled extracellular matrix remodeling and cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) suppression. Mechanistically, CPZT disrupts TGF-β/Smad signaling by inhibiting Smad2 phosphorylation and downregulating key CAF markers (α-SMA, FAP, PDGFRα, and LRRC15), thereby reducing the secretion of immunosuppressive cytokines IL-6 and SFRP2, promoting vascular normalization (elevated CD31), decompressing the tumor stroma, and enhancing immune cell infiltration. When combined with PD-1 blockade or γδ T cell therapy, CPZT significantly enhances cytotoxic T cell infiltration and antitumor efficacy accordingly. Furthermore, multimodal PET imaging with tailored tracers ([ 68 Ga]Ga-FAPI-04, [ 68 Ga]Ga-GZP, and [ 68 Ga]Ga-LLP2A) enables noninvasive, dynamic visualization of stromal remodeling and immune activation, with imaging biomarkers correlating strongly with therapeutic responses. This approach addresses fibrosis-driven immunotherapy resistance and provides a precision-guided strategy for stromal–immune modulation in desmoplastic tumors, underscoring the translational potential of integrating biomimetic nanomedicine with functional molecular imaging.

Epoxidized Soybean Oil-Based Phosphorus-Containing Waterborne Polyurethane Coating for PET Rope With Enhanced Flame Retardancy and Mechanical Properties

Jingya Dai,Yusong Xu,Tao Zhang,Xianming Zhang

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is a promising surface finishing agent for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ropes used in marine operations, industrial lifting, outdoor activities, and agricultural settings. However, WPU exhibits poor flame retardancy, and developing a WPU coating that enhances the flame retardancy of PET ropes while maintaining good mechanical properties remains a challenge. Herein, we report PET ropes coated with flame-retardant waterborne polyurethane (FRWPU) synthesized from epoxidized soybean oil-based phosphorus-containing polyol and poly(propylene glycol). The breaking strength of FRWPU coated PET rope (PET–FRWPU) reaches 8092 N, which is more than twice that of pristine PET rope; the elongation at break reaches 82.30%, nearly twice that of pristine PET rope. The PET–FRWPU achieves a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test, and the time required for a vertical flame to burn through the horizontal rope is extended to 90 s, more than twice that of pristine PET rope. In the cone calorimetry test, the PET–FRWPU inhibits heat release and smoke release more effectively compared to the pristine PET rope. Moreover, the FRWPU coating can withstand 800 cycles of abrasion and bending tests. This study provides insights into the design and manufacture of flame-retardant coatings for PET ropes.

Facile preparation of RGO-TiO2-functionalized PET fabrics for the visible light-driven degradation of organic pollutions in water

Ruobing Yao,Yuting Xue,Cheng Zhang,Guangxian Zhang,Fang Xu,Yunxuan Weng

In order to protect the environment, it is very important to develop facile and repeatable methods to degrade organic pollutants in water. The reduced graphene oxide and (RGO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2)-functionalized polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics (RGO-TiO2-PET) were facilely prepared using a one-step hydrothermal method. The RGO-TiO2-PET exhibited remarkable photodegradation efficiency and excellent recyclability. From the results, RGO enhanced the catalytic degradation of rhodamine B by RGO-TiO2-PET under visible light irradiation. The degradation of RhB catalyzed by TiO2-PET was 63.57% after 180 min of degradation under visible light irradiation, while it increased to 93.28% catalyzed by 5% RGO-TiO2-PET. Moreover, RGO-TiO2-functionalized PET fabric exhibited wonderful reusability, since its photocatalytic activity did not significantly decrease after five photocatalysis cycles. The significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the enhanced absorption of dyes and light, and charge transfer from the conduction band of TiO2 to the empty electronic states of RGO.

Preparation of PET/PE Bilayer Film From Recycled Waste Plastic Bottles: Synergistic Achievement of Radiation Cooling and Mechanical Toughness

Zhenyu Zhang,Xueqing Hu,Haosen Ma,Yu He,Yan Zhou,Xiangdong Liu,Yuming Yang

This study proposes a recycling strategy utilizing waste plastic bottles (PET bottle bodies and PE caps) to successfully fabricate a bilayer composite film, PET/(PE–TiO 2 ), which exhibits excellent passive radiative cooling performance and enhanced mechanical properties. The upper layer, consisting of highly reflective PET nanofibers fabricated via electrospinning, achieves a high solar reflectance (> 96%) across the solar spectrum (0.3–2.5 μm). The lower layer, a PE–TiO 2 composite prepared by melt blending, enhances the overall mechanical strength of the material. Systematic characterization demonstrates that the PET/(PE–TiO 2 ) bilayer film maintains high optical performance while significantly improving mechanical strength (breaking strength increased by > 5-fold) and thermal stability (decomposition temperature > 400°C). Both theoretical calculations and experimental validation confirm that the material achieves a net cooling power exceeding 100 W/m 2 under standard solar irradiation (1 kW/m 2 ). Practical applications demonstrate surface temperature reductions of approximately 10°C for the human body and 5.3°C for electronic devices. This work not only achieves efficient synergistic recycling and value-added utilization of PET and PE but also provides a new approach for developing low-cost, high-performance, and environmentally friendly passive cooling materials, with broad application prospects in personal thermal management, electronic thermal regulation, and building energy efficiency.

Electrooxidation of PET alkaline hydrolysate to formate and glycolate enabled by the synergistic interaction of Ag and NiFe-LDH

Yi Ma,Huan Ge,Yong Zhang,Ning Jian,Jialing Tang,Zongkun Hu,Jing Yu,Jordi Arbiol,Canhuang Li,Luming Li,Andreu Cabot,Junshan Li

Waste plastics present a significant threat to ecosystems and human health, necessitating efficient and cost-effective solutions for their conversion into high-value products. This study introduces a novel electrochemical reforming strategy to upgrade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into valuable chemicals, primarily formic acid, while simultaneously generating hydrogen. A highly efficient electrocatalyst composed of nano-arrays of silver and NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) is synthesized via a hydrothermal and photo-precipitation process on a nickel foam substrate. This advanced catalyst achieves selective electrochemical conversion of ethylene glycol (EG) as PET hydrolysate to formate and glycolate with Faradaic efficiencies of 85% and 13% at 1.5 V vs . the reversible hydrogen electrode, with a stable and high current density. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic interaction between Ag and NiFe-LDH optimizes the adsorption and desorption of key intermediates on the catalytic sites, resulting in superior activity, selectivity, and stability for the electrochemical EG oxidation reaction. These findings highlight the potential of this catalyst for sustainable plastic waste valorization and renewable hydrogen production.

Selective Co-Upcycling of Waste PET Plastic and Nitrate to Glycine via C–N Coupling on a WO3 Photocatalyst

Zongyang Ya,Dong Xu,Xiaohui Tang,Yu Zheng,Zixuan Zhang,Mei Li,Hua Wang,Shengbo Zhang

Photocatalytic conversion of polyols and nitrogen-containing small molecules into value-added chemicals via C–N coupling reaction represents a promising route for dual waste treatment of waste plastics and wastewater. However, precisely controlling the coupling pathway of key intermediates to achieve high product selectivity remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a WO3 photocatalyst that enables the highly selective synthesis of glycine from waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-derived ethylene glycol (EG) and nitrate, achieving a remarkable glycine yield of 1.87 mmol gcat–1 h–1 with 89% selectivity, which significantly outperforms conventional TiO2-based systems. Mechanistic studies indicate that the high selectivity stems from the distinct reaction pathway on WO3, where glycolaldehyde is stabilized as the key intermediate to efficient C–N coupling with NH4+ derived from NO3– reduction. This contrasts with the TiO2-catalyzed pathway that proceeds via the more oxidized glyoxal, which readily undergoes overoxidation to the byproduct formic acid. By using different plastic/biomass-derived feedstocks (methanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol), this process can be expanded to the scale synthesis of various C–N compounds. Preliminary techno-economic analysis and life-cycle assessments suggest the potential economic viability and environmental benefits of this process. This work establishes a sustainable photocatalytic strategy for the valorization of waste plastic and wastewater by regulating key intermediates to enable a selective C–N coupling pathway.

Dual activation of a zinc salt and solvent-tuned dissolution enable efficient neutral hydrolysis of PET and its blends

Xuan Zhao,Shun Zhang,Jiaying Xu,Chengfeng Shen,Yifan Liu,Xuehui Liu,Zhishan Su,Shimei Xu,Yu-Zhong Wang

Neutral hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste to terephthalic acid (TPA) is a promising but very challenging recycling method due to the weak nucleophilicity of water. While some metal catalysts were reported to accelerate neutral hydrolysis under high-concentration conditions, the resulting acidic environment at elevated temperature often leads to actual acid hydrolysis rather than true neutral hydrolysis. Herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient neutral hydrolysis by coupling the activation effect of the metal salt zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)2) with the solvent effect of γ-valerolactone (GVL)/H2O. Mechanistic studies reveal that Zn(OTf)2 activates both water (through triflate–water interactions) and PET ester groups (via Zn2+ coordination). Meanwhile, GVL shifts the reaction from a heterogeneous to a homogeneous system and enables the non-destructive separation of other components from PET by utilizing their own physical properties and different solubilities in GVL for PET blends. This work offers a new insight into catalytic solvent systems and provides an efficient and sustainable method for the recovery of PET waste.

Highly Efficient Tannic Acid (TA) -Iron Ion (Fe3+) Modification of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Fibers for High-Performance Polymer Composites

Zeguang Yang,Zhi Gao,Hongwei He,Lan Jia,Fuyong Liu,Wenwen Yu,Yonggang Li

The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers surfaces were modified by complexing tannic acid (TA)-iron ions (Fe3+) to form a metal skeleton structure on the fibers. In this system a large number of phenolic hydroxyl groups, epoxy groups and other active groups on the fibers surfaces can stabilize the metal skeleton structure and enhance the interfacial peeling performance between the fibers and the composite rubber matrix. The modified PET fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties. The results showed that the peeling strength between the modified fibers and the rubber matrix was increased 45%. This method has the advantages of simple operation, mild conditions and low cost, which provides a new idea for the preparation of rubber/polyester fiber composites with excellent mechanical properties.

Facile fabrication of PTFE/PET composite membrane with reinforced hydrophilic and antifouling properties for sustainable decentralized water system purification

Ludi Song,Yujie Fang,Xin Chen,Ziyuan Zhou,Liping Chen,Jun Yang,Ying Li,Yaqin Wu,Haitao Zhu,Lin Zhang,Congjie Gao

Decentralized water supply in rural regions remains a substantial challenge due to complex natural, technical, and economic constraints. Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) systems represent a promising approach for achieving sustainable water purification in such decentralized supply scenarios. This study developed a facile fabrication strategy for crosslinking PTFE/PET composite membranes (c-PTFE/PET) with reinforced hydrophilicity to improve the water permeance and antifouling performance. After acetalization between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glutaraldehyde (GA), the c-PTFE/PET membrane exhibited superhydrophilicity, likely driven by abundant hydroxyl groups and increased surface roughness. Density functional theory calculations revealed that strong interactions between the PVA-GA complex layer and H 2 O molecules promoted the formation of a dense hydration layer. Compared with conventional PTFE/PET composite membrane, the enhanced properties rendered c-PTFE/PET membrane proficient not only in water permeance (3.17 times), but also outstanding antifouling performance against humic acid and bovine serum albumin solution. Moreover, field application of the resulting GDM system equipped with c-PTFE/PET membrane, with a treatment capacity of 10 m 3 day −1 , demonstrated improved effluent quality, reduced microbial community diversity, and elevated economic efficiency. The c-PTFE/PET membrane also maintained its hydrophilicity after prolonged exposure to chemical environments. This work presents a cost-effective, easily implementable, and highly efficient approach for household water purification in underdeveloped regions.
