In this work, a tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)-grafted metal-organic framework material (MIL-101) was synthesized. The introduction of TEPA increased the abundance of functional groups on the MIL-101. As a powdery adsorbent, MIL-101-TEPA can be difficult to separate. In order to solve this problem, we combined MIL-101-TEPA with sodium alginate (SA) and injected the mixture into a CaCl2solution to solidify the powder into beads with a particle size of 3 mm. The easily recovered adsorbent was applied to the adsorption of Pb(II) from water. The structure and characterization of the adsorbent were investigated through scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We also optimized the adsorption conditions. The results of the study showed that the adsorption process was chemisorptive and endothermic in nature. The maximum adsorption capacity of the composite beads was 558.6 mg/g. Meanwhile MIL-101-TEPA@CA showed good repeatable utilization. Keywords:sodium alginate;functional MIL-101;composite beads;adsorption;Pb(II)

Paper-based lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) are an interesting on site technique for detecting heavy metals. Pb(II) is one of the toxic heavy metals in polluted environmental water. This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of three Fe3O4-based nanoadsorbents that show different performance to Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), As(V), Zn(II), Fe(III), Ca(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), and Al(III) when a GO or an amino group is introduced. Compared with Fe3O4, Fe3O4-GO showed higher adsorption percentage to many heavy metal ions under slightly acid condition. The negative surface on Fe3O4@NH2 had favourable interactions for four main divalent metal ion adsorption, which followed the order: Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Hg(II) > Cd(II). Combined with antibody-functionalized AuNPs showed high affinity and specificity toward Pb(II), an Fe3O4@NH2-based LFIA with five times greater sensitivity for detecting Pb(II) in lake water was developed. The cut-off value of this Fe3O4@NH2-combined LFIA method for detection Pb(II) in lake water was 20 ng/mL and the detection result for 10 ng/mL Pb(II) was obviously observable by the naked eye or a strip reader machine. This detection strategy could be readily adapted for other small molecules or biomolecules as an ultrasensitive screening tool.

An electrochemical sensor was developed for detecting heavy metal ions by using a phytic acid functionalized polypyrrole (PPy)/graphene oxide (GO) modified electrode. PPy/GO nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization. The PPy/GO nanocomposites were functionalized with phytic acid (PA) molecules by electrostatic attraction. The structural features of the fabricated nanocomposites were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The PA/PPy/GO modified electrode exhibited high electrochemical conductivity, and produced a remarkable increase in peak current compared with the PPy/GO and PA/GO modified electrodes. The developed sensor was used for the electrochemical analysis of various trace metal ions by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode demonstrated to measure Cd(II) and Pb(II) with a linear working range of 5–150 μg/L. This work demonstrated a simple, rapid and high performing electrochemical strategy for high-sensitivity detection of heavy metal ions.

Recently, ordered mesoporous carbon has displayed attractive performance in electrochemical catalysis and sensing, benefiting from its rich and tunable pore texture. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on a three-dimensionally interconnected mesoporous graphene framework (MGF) was developed for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. Attributable to the abundant three-dimensional mesopores and good electrical conductivity of MGF, as well as the synergistic effect of Nafion and in-situ plated bismuth films, a highly sensitive determination of mixed metals at a Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE is achieved. The proposed sensor exhibits wide linear responses for Cd(II) and Pb(II), ranging from 2–70 μg L −1 and 0.5–110 μg L −1 , respectively. The detection limits are about 0.5 and 0.1 μg L −1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively, which are about 6 and 100 times lower than the drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE has been applied for the detection of mixed metals in real water samples. The satisfying recoveries (87.5-109.2%) and relative standard deviations (RSD, 3.7-8.6%) make the proposed electrode a promising candidate for rapid and on-site monitoring of environmental metallic pollutants.

A hierarchical porous PU@PDA@MSNs sponge with reversible “shape memory” effect was employed in this investigation for the simultaneous adsorption of Pb(II) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). Our strategy was based on facile conjugation of carboxyl groups modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to poly(dopamine) (PDA) coated polyurethane (PU) sponge (PU@PDA), and the as-prepared PU@PDA@MSNs sponge possessed the advantages of less operation time, convenient adsorbent collection and regeneration owing to its reversible “shape memory” effect. In single system, Pb(II) and TCP adsorption were implemented at pH = 6.0, and their max monolayer adsorption amount at 298 k were 104.2 mg g −1 and 184.2 mg g −1 , respectively. However, the binary system exhibited that the coexistence of Pb(II) and TCP could obviously accelerate jointly adsorption at low concentrations, due to partial complexation between Pb(II) and TCP during the 10–30 mg L −1 of Pb(II) and TCP. While at higher concentrations, TCP adsorption was inhibited in relation to the competition from Pb(II), but Pb(II) adsorption was scarcely affected due to its smaller size and strong complexation with amino groups from PU@PDA@MSNs sponge. The PU@PDA sponge could be simply recycled and maintained stability after seven adsorption/desorption cycles in the regeneration steps.

The discharge of lead and cadmium wastewater, along with the pollution caused by phosphogypsum, represents a particularly urgent environmental issue. This study employed a straightforward hydrothermal method to convert phosphogypsum into porous calcium silicate hydrate (P-CSH), which was then used to remove and recover Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of P-CSH for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were notably high at 989.3 mg/g and 290.3 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Due to identical adsorption sites on P-CSH for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), competitive interaction occurred when both ions were present simultaneously. Additionally, the adsorption efficacy was minimally impacted by the presence of common coexisting cations in wastewater. The dominant mechanisms for removing Pb(II) and Cd(II) via P-CSH were chemical precipitation and surface complexation. Moreover, the adsorbed heavy metals were efficiently separated and reclaimed from the wastewater through a stepwise desorption process. The primary components of the residue from stepwise desorption were quartz and amorphous SiO2. Following dissolution via pressurized alkaline leaching, this residue could be recycled for synthesizing P-CSH. This research offered a new strategy for the resourceful use of phosphogypsum and heavy metal wastewater.

Developing an ultra-thin polyamide selective layer with sufficient mechanical robustness on a highly porous ceramic substrate is challenging for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater. We synthesized a reliable ceramic-polyamide membrane by assembling nanocomposite interlayers of alumina and carbon black on the kaolin substrate. The surface morphology, pore size distribution, and roughness of ceramic substrates were improved by introducing the nanocomposite interlayer. The corresponding optimized water flux , Pb(II), and Cd(II) removal efficiency are 2.75 L m −2 h −1 , 98.44%, and 97.51%, respectively, which are better than those of the polyamide films constructed directly on the ceramic substrate. This facile structure provides more active sites for forming ultrathin polyamide layers with satisfactory mechanical robustness. This paper provides a new perspective for fabricating efficient heavy metal ions filters.

Due to its small size, large specific surface area and hydrophobicity, microplastics, and the adsorbed contaminants may together cause potential negative effects on ecosystems and human beings. In this study, kinetics and size effects on adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) onto PE, PP and PET microplastic particles were explored. Results indicated that the PE and PET microplastics have the higher adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) than that for PP microplastic. The adsorption capacity was affected by microplastic types and metal species. Among the three metals, Pb(II) had the largest adsorption amount on microplastic particles, especially on PET particles. Moreover, the adsorption capacities of microplastics increase with the decrease of particle size. The metal adsorption capacity of <0.9 mm microplastics is greater than that of 0.9–2 mm and 2–5 mm microplastics. The size effect on metal adsorption was largest for PE microplastic. More attention should be paid in case of the coexistence of heavy metals and tiny PE and PET microplastics in the environment.

Water pollution by heavy metals poses severe threats to ecosystems and human health. While adsorption offers a promising remediation strategy, the practical application of conventional powdered adsorbents is hampered by poor recyclability, handling difficulties, and limited scalability. To address these challenges, we report a novel adsorbent fabricated by crosslinking carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMP), a chelating agent with superior heavy metal affinity. This adsorbent (EDT-CMC) exhibits adsorption capacities of 640.4 ± 9.4 mg/g for Pb 2+ and 401.2 ± 8.2 mg/g for Cd 2+ at 298 K, representing increases of 95.8 ± 7.9% and 96.6 ± 10.5%, respectively, compared to EDTMP-absent adsorbents. Systematic investigations of adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were conducted, complemented by comprehensive characterizations (XRD, FT-IR, SEM, XPS). The material demonstrates good tolerance to pH variations and competing ions, along with promising performance in fixed-bed column and recyclability studies, underscoring its potential for practical applications. Mechanistic studies reveal that surface complexation and ion exchange are the primary drivers of metal removal, with electrostatic interactions playing a secondary role, a conclusion further validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work offers two key advancements, the first being a spherical bead-like architecture that overcomes the recyclability and handling limitations of traditional powdered adsorbents, enabling practical fixed-bed applications, and the second is a comprehensive mechanistic elucidation combining experimental characterizations with DFT calculations, providing molecular-level insights into the adsorption process. Overall, EDT-CMC was expected to be an effective adsorbent to apply in the field of heavy metal removal.

In this study, the nanocomposites from biomass (soybean straw) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), denoted as B/LDHs, were fabricated using the mechanical-hydrothermal method. The obtained B/LDHs nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, FT-IR, and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. Adsorption of the heavy-metal ions Pb( ii ) on the B/LDHs was determined at 25°C and pH 6.0 using a batch technique. The experimental results demonstrated that biomass contributed to the sorption process. The pseudo-second-order, Langmuir, and Freundlich models well fitted the sorption process, indicating chemisorption and monolayer adsorption were the main adsorption mechanisms. Meanwhile, it is found that there is an obvious effect of adsorbent concentration in the studied adsorption system. In comparison with soybean straw and Mg–Al LDHs, the B/LDHs nanocomposites exhibit significantly enhanced sorption capacities. It is evident from this study that the construction of B/LDHs nanocomposites is an effective strategy for improving the sorption capacity of LDHs, and the modified LDH-based adsorbent shows a good potential in the removal of heavy metals from water. More importantly, it solves the problem of a large number of agricultural waste disposals. And, it achieved the goal of a win-win situation.

The removal of lead(II) from wastewater is conducive to reduce the risk of harmful metals to the environment and people. A magnetic organic framework adsorbent (Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -HT-COF) with high selectivity, repeatability and facile solid–liquid separation was devised through the condensation process of hexachlorocyclo-triphosphazene, trithiocyanuric acid and Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 . At 298 K and pH = 5.0, the adsorbent showed remarkable Pb(II) adsorption capability. The removal rate reached 95.64 % at 10 min and the maximum adsorption capacity was 411.80 mg/g. The partition coefficient ( K Q ) of Pb(II) among the seven coexisting ions was 34079 mL/g and the adsorption efficiency was 97.15 %, indicating that the adsorbent can accurately capture Pb(II) from wastewater containing multiple ions. The PSO kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models agreed with Pb(II) adsorption on Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -HT-COF, demonstrating that Pb(II) was removed by monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption was a spontaneous exothermic process using thermodynamic analysis. In addition, the adsorbent was able to maintain 91.77 % adsorption efficiency for Pb(II) after four adsorption–desorption cycles. Zeta potential and XPS analysis revealed that Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -HT-COF removed Pb(II) by electrostatic attraction and chelation. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to simulate the adsorption process, and the effects of different types of atoms on adsorption were discussed. The results demonstrate that the chelation and electrostatic interaction between Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -HT-COF and lead(II) ions were involved in the selective adsorption. The novel magnetic COF has a lot of potential for removing heavy metal Pb(II).

Background Toxic metals such as Pb(II) and Cd(II) have thrown great threat to human health. Adsorption has been drawn more attention due to its low-cost, easy process and extensive raw materials. However, high efficient and environmental-friendly adsorbents are still in great need. Furthermore, the quantitatively adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) and Cd(II) remain unclear. MgO-loaded lotus stem biochar was proposed as a highly efficient adsorbent to removal aqueous Pb(II) and Cd(II). Methods MgO-loaded biochar was prepared by using lotus stalk as a precursor to be pyrolyzed with MgCl 2 impregnation. Adsorption isotherms , kinetics, thermodynamics experiments were carried out. SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, etc. were employed to characterize the adsorbent before and after adsorption. Significant findings The adsorption capacities of MgO-loaded biochar for Pb(II) and Cd(II) reached 1379.54 mg/g and 404.04 mg/g, respectively, which were 5 and 20 times higher than that of the original biochar. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics indicated that the adsorption process was a chemisorption-based heat absorption reaction, and the characterization results showed the main adsorption mechanisms were ascribed to ion-exchange, precipitation, surface complexation between biochar and Pb(II)/Cd(II) ions, in which the ion exchange mechanism was quantitatively confirmed. Finally, MgO-loaded biochar has been proved to be an efficient adsorbent.
