Development of mercaptosuccinic anchored MOF through one-step preparation to enhance adsorption capacity and selectivity for Hg(II) and Pb(II)

Chen Wang,Guo Lin,Yunhao Xi,Xiteng Li,Zhen Huang,Shixing Wang,Jiling Zhao,Libo Zhang

A novel Zr-MOF adsorbent was synthesized by one-step method and was used to selectively adsorb Hg(II) and Pb(II) from wastewater. The adsorbent can reduce the concentration of mercury and lead to less than the national standard (Hg is 50 μg/L and Pb is 1 mg/L). The entire adsorption process conforms to the pseudo second-order kinetic and Hill isotherm models. At pH 4, the adsorbent removed more than 90% of mercury (to 22 μg/L) and lead (to 0.732 mg/L) in 10 min and 960 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 1080 mg/g and 510 mg/g, respectively. In addition, the practical application in wastewater proved that the adsorbent can selectively adsorb Hg(II) and Pb(II) from the mixed ion solution and it still meets national standards for wastewater discharge. The research of repeated experiments proves that the adsorbent can be used repeatedly. The adsorption mechanism was clarified by FTIR, XPS spectroscopy before and after adsorption, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In summary, the adsorbent is stable in aqueous solution and has great potential for the efficient removal of trace heavy metal ions (mercury and lead) in future treatment of wastewater.

Simultaneous detection of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry using a bismuth oxycarbide/nafion electrode

Yaxiao Zhang,Chao Li,Yingchun Su,Wei Mu,Xiaojun Han

Heavy metal pollution causes serious health threat to humanbeings. Herein we fabricated a novel bismuth oxycarbide (BOC) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the simultaneous detection of cadmium and lead ions using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The main factors influencing the detection performance, such as solution pH, deposition voltage and deposition time were optimized to be 4.5, −1.3v, and 700s, respectively. The detection limits for lead ions and cadmium ions were 4.30 μg/L and 3.97 μg/L, respectively. These detection limits are both lower than 5 μg/L for cadmium ions and 10 μg/L for lead ions national standards. The BOC modified GCE exhibits good selectivity and reliability for the detection of lead ions and cadmium ions. BOC/GCE may find great potential for heavy metal ions detection in real water sample.

Facile in situ synthesis of cellulose microcrystalline-manganese dioxide nanocomposite for effective removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from water

Fu Binbin,Xie Fencun

A novel cellulose microcrystalline-manganese dioxide nanocomposite (CMC-NMO) was synthesized by the redox reaction between potassium permanganate and ethanol based on cellulose microcrystalline. The cellulose microcrystalline (CMC) as support providing growth sites for the manganese dioxide nanowhiskers produced by the redox reaction and its application for Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal from aqueous was investigated. The characterization of as-synthesized material was revealed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Infrared-transform infrared (FITR) indicates that the incorporation of manganese oxide to CMC does not change the initial structure of it. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data show that the manganese dioxide nanowhiskers with a few nanometers are uniformly dispersed on the surface of cellulose. Kinetics experiments reveal that Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption on CMC-NMO is a fast process and pseudo-second-order model fits the adsorption better. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) obtained from the Langmuir model are 290.8 mg/g and 67.4 mg/g, respectively. The mechanism is mainly attributed to surface complexation and electrostatic attraction by energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. In addition, depth removal experiments show that the residual concentrations of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in natural water after adsorption are lower than 0.01 mg/L. The regeneration and cyclic utilizing studies indicate that CMC-NMO has good adsorption stability. Therefore, the results indicate that this material can be employed as a potential adsorbent for current serious Pb(II) and Cd(II) pollution caused by industrial emissions. Graphical abstract

An electrochemical sensor based on phytic acid functionalized polypyrrole/graphene oxide nanocomposites for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Hongxiu Dai,Nan Wang,Donglei Wang,Houyi Ma,Meng Lin

An electrochemical sensor was developed for detecting heavy metal ions by using a phytic acid functionalized polypyrrole (PPy)/graphene oxide (GO) modified electrode. PPy/GO nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization. The PPy/GO nanocomposites were functionalized with phytic acid (PA) molecules by electrostatic attraction. The structural features of the fabricated nanocomposites were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The PA/PPy/GO modified electrode exhibited high electrochemical conductivity, and produced a remarkable increase in peak current compared with the PPy/GO and PA/GO modified electrodes. The developed sensor was used for the electrochemical analysis of various trace metal ions by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode demonstrated to measure Cd(II) and Pb(II) with a linear working range of 5–150   μg/L. This work demonstrated a simple, rapid and high performing electrochemical strategy for high-sensitivity detection of heavy metal ions.

An efficient electrochemical sensor based on three-dimensionally interconnected mesoporous graphene framework for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Lili Xiao,Biwei Wang,Li Ji,Fu Wang,Qunhui Yuan,Guangzhi Hu,Angang Dong,Wei Gan

Recently, ordered mesoporous carbon has displayed attractive performance in electrochemical catalysis and sensing, benefiting from its rich and tunable pore texture. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on a three-dimensionally interconnected mesoporous graphene framework (MGF) was developed for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. Attributable to the abundant three-dimensional mesopores and good electrical conductivity of MGF, as well as the synergistic effect of Nafion and in-situ plated bismuth films, a highly sensitive determination of mixed metals at a Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE is achieved. The proposed sensor exhibits wide linear responses for Cd(II) and Pb(II), ranging from 2–70   μg   L −1 and 0.5–110   μg   L −1 , respectively. The detection limits are about 0.5 and 0.1   μg   L −1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively, which are about 6 and 100 times lower than the drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE has been applied for the detection of mixed metals in real water samples. The satisfying recoveries (87.5-109.2%) and relative standard deviations (RSD, 3.7-8.6%) make the proposed electrode a promising candidate for rapid and on-site monitoring of environmental metallic pollutants.

Simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol by a hierarchical porous PU@PDA@MSNs sponge with reversible “shape memory” effect

Shucheng Liu,Jianming Pan,Jun Cao,Xiaohui Dai,Minjia Meng,Runrun Wu,Juntong Yao,Yongsheng Yan

A hierarchical porous PU@PDA@MSNs sponge with reversible “shape memory” effect was employed in this investigation for the simultaneous adsorption of Pb(II) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). Our strategy was based on facile conjugation of carboxyl groups modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to poly(dopamine) (PDA) coated polyurethane (PU) sponge (PU@PDA), and the as-prepared PU@PDA@MSNs sponge possessed the advantages of less operation time, convenient adsorbent collection and regeneration owing to its reversible “shape memory” effect. In single system, Pb(II) and TCP adsorption were implemented at pH   =   6.0, and their max monolayer adsorption amount at 298   k were 104.2   mg   g −1 and 184.2   mg   g −1 , respectively. However, the binary system exhibited that the coexistence of Pb(II) and TCP could obviously accelerate jointly adsorption at low concentrations, due to partial complexation between Pb(II) and TCP during the 10–30   mg   L −1 of Pb(II) and TCP. While at higher concentrations, TCP adsorption was inhibited in relation to the competition from Pb(II), but Pb(II) adsorption was scarcely affected due to its smaller size and strong complexation with amino groups from PU@PDA@MSNs sponge. The PU@PDA sponge could be simply recycled and maintained stability after seven adsorption/desorption cycles in the regeneration steps.

Conversion of Phosphogypsum into Porous Calcium Silicate Hydrate for the Removal and Recycling of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from Wastewater

Gangan Wang,Chaoyi Chen,Junqi Li,Yuanpei Lan,Xin Lin,Jiahang Chen

The discharge of lead and cadmium wastewater, along with the pollution caused by phosphogypsum, represents a particularly urgent environmental issue. This study employed a straightforward hydrothermal method to convert phosphogypsum into porous calcium silicate hydrate (P-CSH), which was then used to remove and recover Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of P-CSH for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were notably high at 989.3 mg/g and 290.3 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Due to identical adsorption sites on P-CSH for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), competitive interaction occurred when both ions were present simultaneously. Additionally, the adsorption efficacy was minimally impacted by the presence of common coexisting cations in wastewater. The dominant mechanisms for removing Pb(II) and Cd(II) via P-CSH were chemical precipitation and surface complexation. Moreover, the adsorbed heavy metals were efficiently separated and reclaimed from the wastewater through a stepwise desorption process. The primary components of the residue from stepwise desorption were quartz and amorphous SiO2. Following dissolution via pressurized alkaline leaching, this residue could be recycled for synthesizing P-CSH. This research offered a new strategy for the resourceful use of phosphogypsum and heavy metal wastewater.

Layer-by-layer assembly of nanocomposite interlayers on a kaolin substrate for enhancing membrane performance of Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal

Wei Zhou,Pute Wu,Lin Zhang,Shengyu Yao,Delan Zhu,Yaohui Cai

Developing an ultra-thin polyamide selective layer with sufficient mechanical robustness on a highly porous ceramic substrate is challenging for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater. We synthesized a reliable ceramic-polyamide membrane by assembling nanocomposite interlayers of alumina and carbon black on the kaolin substrate. The surface morphology, pore size distribution, and roughness of ceramic substrates were improved by introducing the nanocomposite interlayer. The corresponding optimized water flux , Pb(II), and Cd(II) removal efficiency are 2.75 L m −2 h −1 , 98.44%, and 97.51%, respectively, which are better than those of the polyamide films constructed directly on the ceramic substrate. This facile structure provides more active sites for forming ultrathin polyamide layers with satisfactory mechanical robustness. This paper provides a new perspective for fabricating efficient heavy metal ions filters.

Kinetics and Size Effects on Adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) Onto Polyethylene, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene Terephthalate Microplastic Particles

Han Xiaoxin,Wang Shiyu,Yu Xue,Vogt Rolf D.,Feng Jianfeng,Zhai Lifang,Ma Weiqi,Zhu Lin,Lu Xueqiang

Due to its small size, large specific surface area and hydrophobicity, microplastics, and the adsorbed contaminants may together cause potential negative effects on ecosystems and human beings. In this study, kinetics and size effects on adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) onto PE, PP and PET microplastic particles were explored. Results indicated that the PE and PET microplastics have the higher adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) than that for PP microplastic. The adsorption capacity was affected by microplastic types and metal species. Among the three metals, Pb(II) had the largest adsorption amount on microplastic particles, especially on PET particles. Moreover, the adsorption capacities of microplastics increase with the decrease of particle size. The metal adsorption capacity of <0.9 mm microplastics is greater than that of 0.9–2 mm and 2–5 mm microplastics. The size effect on metal adsorption was largest for PE microplastic. More attention should be paid in case of the coexistence of heavy metals and tiny PE and PET microplastics in the environment.

Easy to recycle ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid)-modified carboxymethyl cellulose beads for efficient Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal from water

Linrui Li,Peisen Huang,Yubo Pan,Xianyong Hong,Yu Tao,Zhihui Wang,Mingxing Shi,Yu Xia,Mingzhu Xia,Fenghe Wang,Fengyun Wang,Wu Lei

Water pollution by heavy metals poses severe threats to ecosystems and human health. While adsorption offers a promising remediation strategy, the practical application of conventional powdered adsorbents is hampered by poor recyclability, handling difficulties, and limited scalability. To address these challenges, we report a novel adsorbent fabricated by crosslinking carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMP), a chelating agent with superior heavy metal affinity. This adsorbent (EDT-CMC) exhibits adsorption capacities of 640.4 ± 9.4 mg/g for Pb 2+ and 401.2 ± 8.2 mg/g for Cd 2+ at 298 K, representing increases of 95.8 ± 7.9% and 96.6 ± 10.5%, respectively, compared to EDTMP-absent adsorbents. Systematic investigations of adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were conducted, complemented by comprehensive characterizations (XRD, FT-IR, SEM, XPS). The material demonstrates good tolerance to pH variations and competing ions, along with promising performance in fixed-bed column and recyclability studies, underscoring its potential for practical applications. Mechanistic studies reveal that surface complexation and ion exchange are the primary drivers of metal removal, with electrostatic interactions playing a secondary role, a conclusion further validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work offers two key advancements, the first being a spherical bead-like architecture that overcomes the recyclability and handling limitations of traditional powdered adsorbents, enabling practical fixed-bed applications, and the second is a comprehensive mechanistic elucidation combining experimental characterizations with DFT calculations, providing molecular-level insights into the adsorption process. Overall, EDT-CMC was expected to be an effective adsorbent to apply in the field of heavy metal removal.

Multiple transfer pathways and dense high-energy sites enable high-capacity, ultra-fast, and efficient Pb(II) capture by porous silicate architecture

Han Li,Qile Zhao,Huan Zhang,Jinfang Wu,Zexu Zhang,Yue Yin,Wenbo Wang,Fang Guo

Adsorption techniques are crucial for removing high and trace levels of heavy metal pollutants from water, enabling effective pollution control without causing secondary contamination. Achieving “all-rounder” adsorbents with high capacity, efficiency, speed, and cost-effectiveness is challenging. Materials with structural defects, firm surface charges, and porous structures are ideal for rapid and efficient mass transfer. Herein, using a “homologous transformation” strategy, we converted abundant kaolin into 4A and Na-P1 zeolites-based porous silicate adsorbents with enhanced surface active sites and optimized adsorption pathways. Site energy analysis confirmed that these upgraded structures have high-density, high-energy adsorption sites, facilitating rapid Pb(II) removal from water. These zeolite-based adsorbents exhibit exceptional Pb(II) adsorption capacities (416.60 mg/g for 4A and 400.21 mg/g for Na-P1) and ultra-fast initial rate constants (409.84 and 617.28, which are 174.62 and 263.01 times greater than those of kaolinite; and 56.56 and 85.19 times greater than those of commercial activated carbon, respectively). DFT calculations verified strong adsorption forces for Pb(II) (adsorption energy: −0.52 eV). Removal efficiencies reached 99.75 % for 4A and 99.96 % for Na-P1 zeolite-based adsorbents, ensuring treated water is safe and supports seed germination and plant root growth. These adsorbents also perform well in the presence of interfering ions like Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II). After 10 regeneration cycles, they retain over 73 % of their original capacity, demonstrating an optimal balance among capacity, speed, efficiency, and interference resistance, aligning with sustainable development principles of “from nature, for nature”.

Preparation of composite soybean straw-based materials by LDHs modifying as a solid sorbent for removal of Pb(ii) from water samples

Fengrong Zhang,Binghan Zhang,Dandan Han,Lishun Wu,Wanguo Hou

In this study, the nanocomposites from biomass (soybean straw) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), denoted as B/LDHs, were fabricated using the mechanical-hydrothermal method. The obtained B/LDHs nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, FT-IR, and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. Adsorption of the heavy-metal ions Pb( ii ) on the B/LDHs was determined at 25°C and pH 6.0 using a batch technique. The experimental results demonstrated that biomass contributed to the sorption process. The pseudo-second-order, Langmuir, and Freundlich models well fitted the sorption process, indicating chemisorption and monolayer adsorption were the main adsorption mechanisms. Meanwhile, it is found that there is an obvious effect of adsorbent concentration in the studied adsorption system. In comparison with soybean straw and Mg–Al LDHs, the B/LDHs nanocomposites exhibit significantly enhanced sorption capacities. It is evident from this study that the construction of B/LDHs nanocomposites is an effective strategy for improving the sorption capacity of LDHs, and the modified LDH-based adsorbent shows a good potential in the removal of heavy metals from water. More importantly, it solves the problem of a large number of agricultural waste disposals. And, it achieved the goal of a win-win situation.
