To deal with the environmental pollution caused by dyes and heavy metals , it is vital to design and prepare adsorbents with efficient adsorption and removal capabilities for the regulated removal of contaminants in the environment. In this work, biomimetic apatite hydrogel beads inspired by the structure of petunia pollen were produced in order to efficiently remove lead ions (Pb 2+ ) and malachite green (MG) by adsorption. Utilizing an ionic cross-linking approach, magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (MHNPs) were encapsulated in sodium alginate gels to make hydrogel beads (MHSB) with the structure of petunia pollen. The MG and Pb 2+ adsorption capacities of MHNPs were 208.06 mg/g and 475.50 mg/g, respectively, demonstrating a satisfactory adsorption ability. In addition, the magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles/hydrogel microspheres demonstrated effective MG and Pb 2+ adsorption and removal in mixed adsorption studies, environmental water samples, and fruit juices, as well as in real application. Due to their sound adsorption capability and stability, magnetic MHNPs and MHSB are regarded as fairly promising composite materials for the adsorption and removal of dyes and heavy metal pollutants.

Versatile adsorptive materials that can efficiently capture anionic and cationic heavy metals are extremely significant in purification of complex wastewater systems. Herein, a new type of amine modified, biopolymer-derived core/shell-like adsorbents were employed in heavy metal anion and cation adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI), Pb(II), and Cu(II) were measured to be 497.1, 535.6, and 163.7 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbent also showed great performance in heavy metal cation adsorption in fixed bed column experiments. Additionally, removal efficiency and rapid adsorption kinetics on low concentration heavy metal pollutions for both anion and cations were well discussed to demonstrate the potential in real accidental heavy metal pollution. The prepared core/shell-like biopolymer adsorbents were demonstrated to be a kind of versatile adsorbent for both anionic and cationic heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions.

In this study, a safe, rapid, and environment-friendly green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using the alcohol extract of Radix Hedysari (RH–AgNPs) was developed, the alcohol extract of Radix Hedysari (RH) acted as the reducing agent, stabilizer, and modifier. The main components of RH were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The particle size and morphology of RH–AgNPs were optimized and characterized by a series of techniques. The size distribution, zeta potential, element distribution, and crystalline nature of RH–AgNPs were all determined. It was indicated that RH–AgNPs showed great sensitivity for lead ion (Pb2+) detection with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5 μM with a wide range of 10–500 μM. The selectivity was also explored for common metal ions. RH–AgNPs were then applied to the detection of Pb2+ in spiked Yellow River samples, and the possible mechanism is based on the crosslinking reaction between the hydroxide radical, carboxylate radical and Pb2+.

Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ are two typical metallic pollutants in food. Therefore, it is of great significance to establish a method which can simultaneously detect them. Here, an electrochemical sensor was established to simultaneously detect Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in food samples based on sensing electrode prepared by conductive carbon paper, rGO and CoZn·MOF (CP-rGO-CoZn·MOF). Under the optimized conditions, the proposed electrochemical sensor achieves simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ low to 0.565 nM (Cd 2+ ) and 0.588 nM (Pb 2+ ), respectively. Further selective experiments and repetitive experiments perform well. Spiked experiments find that the recovery rates of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in food samples are between 97.5% to 105.9% and 94.3%–109.6%, indicating the established electrochemical sensor owns a good response to the targets. Besides, relative standard deviations (RSD) of them are no more than 5.817%, showing its potential in practical applications.

Heavy metals may coexist with pesticides in farmland through wastewater irrigation, application of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, or unappropriated waste disposal. Heavy metals are toxic to soil microorganism, which may influence the environmental behavior of pesticides subsequently. In this study, the influence of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ on the degradation of α-cypermethrin and its metabolites, 3-phenoxphenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) and 3-(2’,2’-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (DCCA), were investigated through soil incubation experiment. It was found heavy metals like Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ will inhibit the degradation of α-cypermethrin, especially at high concentrations. Pb 2+ has a stronger inhibitory effect on the degradation of α-cypermethrin than Cd 2+ in the same concentration. With the presence of 10 mg/kg Pb 2+ , the half-life of α-cypermethrin increased from 41.1 to 99.9 days, even the half-life was 129.3 days with 50 mg/kg of Pb 2+ . Besides, heavy metals influenced the chiral selective degradation of α-cypermethrin. The enantiomer fraction was near 0.5 when 10 mg/kg of heavy metals existed. Furthermore, the adverse effects of heavy metals on soil urease, catalase, and sucrase activity were assayed. In tested concentrations (10 and 50 mg kg -1 ), the heavy metals result in strong inhibition of the activity of the enzymes present on soil, jeopardizing the biodegradation by the microbiome and which may inhibit the degradation of α-cypermethrin.

A new colorimetric sensor for Pb 2 + based on bimetallic (Eu-Tb) lanthanide (Ln) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was developed for field screen analysis of lead-polluted environmental water. The Ln-MOFs were prepared by using a simple and fast synthetic method, with Tb 3 + /Eu 3 + and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC) as precursors. The color of the luminescent Ln-MOFs could be fine-tuned from green to red by doping the MOFs with different ratios of Tb 3 + /Eu 3 + , and a specific MOFs Tb 1.7 Eu 0.3 (BDC) 3 ·(H 2 O) 4 was synthesized and employed as the sensing probe. With the existence of Pb 2 + in an appropriate concentration range with a certain amount of Tb 1.7 Eu 0.3 (BDC) 3 ·(H 2 O) 4 , the emission color of the MOFs changed from red-orange to green, which could be visually observed by the naked eyes. This colorimetric sensing method turned out to be simple, rapid, cost-effective and highly selective, without any requirement for complicated instrumentation. Furthermore, lead-polluted environmental water samples were analyzed for Pb 2 + , illustrating the promising perspective of the developed method for field screen analysis.

Integrating MnO2 with carbon is a reliable strategy to improve capacitive deionization (CDI) performance by leveraging the unique properties of both components (i.e., MnO2 and carbon). However, the influences of preliminary functionalization of carbon (e.g., nitrogen doping, KOH activation) and pairing of cathodes and anodes on the CDI performance have yet to be systematically explored. Herein, we prepared a group of MnO2-decorated mesoporous carbon composites with nitrogen as a dopant (i.e., MK-NMCS, K-NMCS, NMCS, and CS), and systematically evaluated the desalination performance of various cathode//anode pairs in a hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) for capturing Na+, Cu2+, and Pb2+, respectively. Of all electrodes, the MK-NMCS//K-NMCS pair demonstrates the optimum desalination performance based on salt adsorption capacity (SAC) and cycling stability, offering a SAC of 25.4 mg g–1 and a SAC retention of 102.4% after 50 consecutive charge–discharge cycles at 1.2 V in 500 ppm of NaCl solution. In addition, the MK-NMCS//K-NMCS electrodes also show the maximum ion adsorption capacity (IAC) toward Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions compared to other cathode//anode pairs, attaining an IAC of 37.0 and 30.0 mg Cu2+ per gram electrode materials at 1.2 V in 500 and 200 ppm of Cu2+ solutions, respectively (cf. 32.2 mg of Pb2+ per gram of electrode materials in 200 ppm of Pb2+ solution). Besides, these electrodes exhibit excellent cycling stability when applied in removing each heavy metal ion separately, with IAC retentions of 90.0 and 98.5% after 50 cycles toward Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions, respectively. Mechanical analysis reveals that both heavy metals are likely to be sequestered via capacitive electrosorption by carbon, intercalation with MnO2, and surface complexation at the external surface of the [MnO6] octahedral layers. Our results demonstrated a great potential of the MnO2-decorated N-doped carbon//prefunctionalized carbon pairs, in particular, the MK-NMCS//K-NMCS electrode pair for capturing heavy metal ions via HCDI platforms. Such prefunctionalization and pairing strategies are very promising for screening high-performance composite electrodes for wastewater remediation.

The high-value utilization of steel pickling waste liquid (SPWL) is an important direction in the resourceful utilization of hazardous waste. In this study, nano-Fe 3 O 4 prepared from SPWL (S-Fe 3 O 4 ) was hydrothermally compounded with MnO 2 as Fe 3 O 4 -MnO 2 (SFM), which were compared with Fe 3 O 4 -MnO 2 (CFM) prepared by chemical reagents. The synthetic materials were evaluated by SEM, VSM, BET, XRD, and zeta potential, the results show that the spherical S-Fe 3 O 4 was encapsulated by spiny spherical shell-like MnO 2 , and the SFM has a high saturation magnetization and specific surface area (159.91 m 2 /g). The adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption effect of SFM on Pb 2+ is highly similar to that of CFM. The maximal adsorption capacity of SFM reached 129.74 mg/g under ideal composite ratio and pH conditions, and the adsorption process was unaffected by competing heavy metal ions coexisting in the environment. Moreover, the high saturation magnetization strength of the SFM makes it simple to separate materials under a magnetic field. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models provided a good description of the Pb 2+ adsorption on SFM. XPS and FTIR analysis provided evidence that the adsorbent surface has a high concentration of -OH functional groups, and that O atoms serve as Pb 2+ binding sites, suggesting that ion exchange occurs during the SFM adsorption process. In this paper, we developed a cheap SFM with high adsorption performance and provided a novel approach to the high-value application of SPWL.

Probing the interaction mechanism between organic molecules and material surfaces in the presence of metal ions is of great importance in many fields, such as mineral flotation. The collectability of benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) to a spodumene (LiAl(SiO3)2) mineral surface during mineral flotation could be enhanced with the addition of metal ion activators—Pb2+ ions. Pb2+ ions could be added as either Pb–BHA complex formed by premixing Pb2+ ions and BHA molecules at a given ratio or sequential addition of Pb2+ ions and BHA molecules. However, the complete understanding of the interaction mechanisms (e.g., adhesion) between BHA and the spodumene mineral surface in the presence of Pb2+ ions remains very limited. In this study, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to measure the intermolecular forces between BHA and the spodumene mineral surface in aqueous solutions. A BHA model molecule, that is, N-hydroxy-4-mercaptobenzamide (MBHA), was synthesized to prepare a BHA-functionalized AFM probe for force measurements. Two model systems (i.e., a Pb–BHA complex interacting with the spodumene mineral surface (model I) and BHA with a Pb2+-activated spodumene surface (model II)) were investigated for comparing the role of Pb2+ in BHA–mineral adhesion. The adhesion measured for model I (23.7 mN/m) is much higher than that of model II (12.5 mN/m), as further supported by the adsorption energies obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculation results showed a higher adsorption energy for model I (∼188.58 kJ/mol) than model II (∼128.16 kJ/mol), which is due to the better spodumene flotation recovery for the Pb–BHA complex as a collector than the sequential addition of Pb2+ and BHA. This work provides useful information on the intermolecular interactions between chemical additives and mineral surfaces in complex mineral flotation processes, and the methodology can be readily extended to other related interfacial processes such as membrane technology, water treatment, oil production, and bioengineering processes.

This study proposes a green and simple strategy for efficiently removing heavy metals from wastewater by activating biochar with eggshell and in-situ generating CaO/Ca(OH) 2 . Characterization results revealed that the composite carbon material (BCEg15) successfully incorporated CaO/Ca(OH) 2 active sites compared to the raw biochar (BC). Additionally, eggshell activation increased the specific surface area and pore volume of BCEg15 by 4.36 and 6.80 times, respectively, compared to BC. These structural enhancements increased the maximum adsorption capacity of BCEg15 for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ by 20.68 and 42 times, respectively, compared to BC. Importantly, the loading of CaO and Ca(OH) 2 significantly enhanced the ion exchange and mineral precipitation capacities of the biochar. For instance, compared to BC, the adsorption capacities of BCEg15 attributed to ion exchange (Q e ) for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ rose by 403.12 mg/g and 197.65 mg/g, respectively, while the adsorption capacities attributed to mineral precipitation (Q p ) increased by 19.60 times and 45.20 times, respectively. BCEg15 demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining adsorption capacities of 461.18 mg/g for Pb 2+ and 265.26 mg/g for Cd 2+ after five cycles. Additionally, BCEg15 outperformed commercial activated carbon in treating heavy metals from desulfurization wastewater from coal-fired power plants, achieving a removal efficiency of 99.98 % compared to 48.22 %. The primary mechanisms by which BCEg15 removes Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were identified as ion exchange, mineral precipitation, complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups, and interactions with π electrons. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to delve deeper into the microscopic mechanisms of adsorption. The findings showed that the O-top site of CaO exhibited the greatest stability for heavy metal adsorption. Electron density difference maps and partial density of states (PDOS) results revealed a denser electron cloud and greater orbital overlap between CaO and Pb 2+ compared to Cd 2+ , suggesting a higher affinity and adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ , consistent with the experimental findings. This study presents an effective method for preparing adsorbents capable of removing Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ from wastewater and offers theoretical insights into the adsorption mechanisms of metal oxide-incorporated biochar.

Lead is a toxic heavy metal that is highly harmful to humans. Developing fast, efficient, and separable materials to treat lead-contaminated wastewater is challenging. In this paper, Cu-based MOF composite (SCC-CuMOF) was prepared by in-situ growth method and used for the removal of Pb 2+ from aqueous solutions. The obtained materials were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The effects of pH, coexisting ions, contact time, initial ion concentration, and temperature on the removal of Pb 2+ were investigated. SCC-CuMOF exhibited excellent adsorption performance on Pb 2+ . Adsorption of Pb 2+ on SCC-CuMOF were in accordance with the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The adsorption thermodynamic study suggested that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The results revealed that Pb 2+ might be adsorbed onto SCC-CuMOF via ion exchange and coordination interaction. In general, SCC-CuMOF has the potential to remove Pb 2+ from wastewater rapidly and efficiently.

Two new lead(II) borate-sulfate mixed-anion compounds, namely, Pb 4 (BO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) and Pb 2 [(BO 2 )(OH)](SO 4 ), have been prepared by using high-temperature melt method or hydrothermal reaction . These compounds exhibit two different types of 3D structures composed of the same anionic units of BO 3 triangles and SO 4 tetrahedra which are interconnected by lead(II) cations. In Pb 4 (BO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ), the lead(II) ions are bridged by borate anions into 3D [Pb 4 (BO 3 ) 2 ] 2+ architectures with 1D tunnels of 8-member rings along the a -axis, which are filled by the sulfate anions. In Pb 2 [(BO 2 )(OH)](SO 4 ), the lead(II) ions are interconnected by borate and sulfate anions into 2D Pb-B-O and Pb-S-O layers parallel to the ab plane, respectively, and these layers are further condensed into the 3D lead(II) borate-sulfate framework. TGA and DSC studies indicate that Pb 4 (BO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) is congruently melting with a melting point of 689 °C whereas Pb 2 [(BO 2 )(OH)](SO 4 ) decomposes at approximately 335 °C. UV/Vis/NIR optical diffuse reflectance spectrum measurements reveal the optical band gaps of 4.03 and 4.08 eV for Pb 4 (BO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) and Pb 2 [(BO 2 )(OH)](SO 4 ), respectively. Furthermore, the electronic structures of Pb 4 (BO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) have also been calculated.
