Magnetic graphene as modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe adsorbent for the determination of organochlorine pesticide residues in tobacco

Yan-Bo Luo,Xue Li,Xing-Yi Jiang,Bao-Dong Cai,Feng-Peng Zhu,Hong-Fei Zhang,Zai-Gen Chen,Yong-Qiang Pang,Yu-Qi Feng

In this study, magnetic graphene was used as modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) adsorbent for the determination of organochlorine pesticide (OCPs) residues in tobacco. To achieve the optimum conditions of modified QuEChERS procedure toward target analytes, several parameters affecting the clean-up efficiency including the amount of the adsorbent and clean-up time were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, a method for the determination of 26 OCPs residues in tobacco was established by coupling the modified QuEChERS procedure to on-line gel permeation chromatography–gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (on-line GPC–GC–MS 2 ). The limits of detection of proposed method for 26 OCPs residues ranged from 0.01275 to 3.150   ng/g. And good linearities of the proposed method were obtained with coefficients of determination ( R 2 ) greater than 0.9985 for all target analytes. Good reproducibility of method was obtained as intra- and inter-day precisions, the relative standard deviations were less than 11.1 and 15.0%, respectively. The apparent recoveries were in the range of 64–126% at different concentrations for real samples. Compared with the reported methods for the determination of OCPs residues in tobacco, the proposed method has the advantages of simple to operate, low cost and high clean-up ability. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the analysis of OCPs residues in real samples.

Highly Safe All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Battery Enabled by Interface Thermal Runaway Regulation Between Lithium Metal and Solid-State Electrolyte

Zijie Lin,Qiushi Yao,Shijie Yang,Hucheng Song,Zhiqian Yu,Zhihuan Li,Shimin Chen,Min Wang,Zixu Wang,Guangbin Zhang,Linglong Zhang,Zhongwei Yu,Xiaoying Song,Kan Zhou,Wei Li,Linwei Yu,Jun Xu,Kunji Chen

All-solid-state (ASS) Li-metal batteries are regarded as promising energy-storage devices due to their high energy density and improved safety. Recently, the interface thermal runaway issues between reactive Li-metal and solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have attracted increasing attention, but it has been less studied. Here, using in situ high-resolution thermal imaging, a significant stress-release period before the interface catches fire and burns between Li metal and Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) SSE is found that can provide opportunities for early thermal runaway warning for the batteries. Further, a highly safe ASS Li-metal battery without external pressure package is reported by constructing a stable heterogeneous interface layer (HIL) consisting of ALD-coated aluminum oxide and PECVD-deposited amorphous silicon (a-Si), which significantly reduces the interface exothermic reaction and suppresses the interface thermal runaway both theoretically and experimentally. The ASS Li-metal symmetric battery shows a long cycling stability both at RT and high temperature over 150 °C being at least 8-times higher than that of the one without HIL. The assembled Li-CO 2 battery is capable of 100 stable cycles with <3.2 V low charge potential at 500 mAg −1 at 150 °C. This work paves a way for the development of the next-generation safe and high-energy lithium batteries.

An Aqueous, Environmental-Friendly, and Flame-Retardant Biomass-Derived Binder for High-Safe, High-Rate, and Long-Life Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Shuang Ma,Daping Qiu,Long Zhang,Xuecheng Liu,Xiaolei Ren,Jinhang Dai,Xingxing Gu,Yanglong Hou

Lithium–sulfur batteries demonstrate significant potential as contenders for next-generation high-energy storage systems. However, the severe shuttle effect of polysulfides and the likelihood of thermal runaway using sulfur cathode and lithium anode result in swift performance deterioration and associated safety hazards, which significantly hinders their progress. Hence, this study develops a novel RB binder owning multifunctional properties, i.e., accommodating the sulfur cathode volume expansion, suppressing the lithium polysulfides shuttle and lithium dendrite growth, promoting Li + transfer and reaction kinetics, as well as reducing the sulfur cathode's flammability, to tackle the issues. By using such a novel and functional binder, the lithium–sulfur battery demonstrates a remarkable initial capacity of 1001.6 mAh g −1 at 1C, along with excellent capacity reversibility, achieving a capacity decay rate of merely 0.027% per cycle at a high rate of 4C. Moreover, even with an increased sulfur load of 5.0 mg cm −2 , it sustains an area capacity of ≈3 mAh cm −2 after 300 cycles at 0.5 C. This multifunctional water-soluble binder with flame retardancy provides a competitive choice for realizing high-rate, high-safety, and long-life lithium–sulfur batteries.

Development of stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces with multifunctional flame-retardant microspheres for safe, high-voltage, and high-energy-density lithium batteries

Hao Yu,Guoqing Liu,Hao Jia,Tao Zhu,Xinxin Dong,Wei Liu,Xiaoyu Gu,Shuheng Wang,Sheng Zhang

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) organic solid electrolyte is regarded as one of the important research directions of next-generation battery technology due to its good electrode interface compatibility, mechanical flexibility, and economic processability. However, the low ionic conductivity, limited electrochemical stability, and flammability of PEO have restricted its large-scale application. This work reports the synthesis of multifunctional flame-retardant microspheres (HCCP-THEIC, HT) using hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC), and subsequently incorporation into PEO. It has been demonstrated that the crystallinity of PEO is reduced under the synergistic effect of physical hindrance from HT and the weak intermolecular hydrogen-bond interactions between HT and PEO. This promotes the dissociation of lithium salts, leading to an increase in the mobility and concentration of free Li + , thereby expanding the electrochemical window to 4.7 V. More importantly, HT stabilizes the electrode-electrolyte interface, promotes the formation of stabilized constituents in both the SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) and CEI (cathode electrolyte interphase) layers, and effectively suppresses lithium dendrites growth. The LiNi₀.₈Mn₀.₁Co₀.₁O₂ (NCM811)//Li cell retains 77.4 % of its capacity after 100 cycles at 4.3 V and 0.5C. Additionally, HT enhances fire safety through free radical scavenging and condensed-phase carbonization, reducing the heat release of pouch batteries by approximately 10 %. This simple and scalable HT synthesis offers a promising approach for producing safe, high-performance, and stable all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

An extremely safe and flexible zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor based on a scalable, thin and high-performance hierarchical structured gel electrolyte

Shangdong Qin,Chao Wan,Mingwei Xu,Jun Huang,Kui Chen,Qinqin Xu,Shizhao Li,Fazhi Zhang,Yuanlong Guo,Yang You,Haibo Xie

High performance and low cost energy storage electronic equipments, together with flexibility and safety, is a major progress in portable and wearable electronics. Unfortunately, flexible batteries are greatly limited due to their inherent cost and safety drawbacks. Herein, we build an extremely safe and flexible quasi-solid-state zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZHSC) by a scalable, thin, and high-performance hierarchical gel electrolyte including the electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) matrix, polyacrylamide (PAM) and zinc salt. Benefiting from the unique interface and superior electrochemical performance of the well-designed electrolyte, the flexible ZHSC achieves a high energy density and power density (132.5 Wh kg −1 and 1244.4 W kg −1 , respectively), high specific capacity (106.0 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g) and prominent cycling stability (100% capacity retention after 15 000 cycles at 10.0 A/g). More importantly, the quasi-solid-state ZHSC exhibits an extreme safety and a high wearability outperforming traditional flexible batteries and can continuously work in various extreme conditions, such as hammering, burning, washing, cutting, bending and piercing. It is believed that this hierarchical structured gel electrolyte provides a new platform and pave the way for flexible and wearable electronics with high performance and safety.

Biomimetic construction of hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrids towards efficient fire-safe epoxy nanocomposites with enhanced thermal conductivity and mechanical properties

Richeng Lian,Yunpeng Jiang,Haocun Guan,Jiahui Cui,Qingyao Gao,Lei Liu,Xilei Chen,Chuanmei Jiao

Developing high-performance MXene-based polymer nanocomposites through a biomimetic method has been a research hotspot. However, it is still an intractable challenge to achieve MXene-based polymer nanocomposites with efficient fire safety, excellent thermal conductivity, and enhanced mechanical properties. Here, inspired by the adhesion of mussels, the hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrid was fabricated by a self-assembly strategy and then employed to prepare epoxy resin (EP) nanocomposites. It has been found that MXene@PDA@CoFeOx can display excellent dispersion and interfacial compatibility in EP matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that only 2.0 wt% MXene@PDA@CoFeOx results in excellent thermal stability and char yield (31.29 wt%) of EP under a nitrogen atmosphere. Combustion tests show that the 2.0 wt% MXene@PDA@CoFeOx confers efficient fire safety to EP. Remarkably, the EP-2.0%MXene@PDA@CoFeOx can obtain an attractive UL-94 rating of V0. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), smoke factor (SF), and peak CO production rate (pCO) of EP-2.0%MXene@PDA@CoFeOx are dramatically decreased by 33.38%, 55.41%, and 36.84% in comparison to those of virgin EP, respectively. The efficient fire safety of EP nanocomposites is mainly attributed to the barrier effect, dilution effect, and catalytic carbonization effect of hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx. Furthermore, the MXene@PDA@CoFeOx enables EP to boast enhanced thermal conductivity (improved by 69.14%), impact strength (improved by 13.38%), and flexural strength (improved by 17.60%). This work offers a feasible biomimetic method for fabricating hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrids and preparing efficient fire-safe EP nanocomposites with excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical performance.

High-performance, intrinsically fire-safe, single-component epoxy resins and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites based on two phosphorus-derived imidazoliums

Jingsheng Wang,Xi Chen,Jun Wang,Shuang Yang,Kaiwen Chen,Lu Zhu,Siqi Huo,Pingan Song,Hao Wang

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite is a kind of lightweight material with excellent comprehensive properties, but low production efficiency and inherent flammability have become two crucial limitations for its further application. Herein, two phosphorus-derived imidazoliums (CEPM-1 and CEPM-2) were synthesized by aqueous self-assembly, and applied to flame-retardant, one-component epoxy resins (EPs). Moreover, the well-designed EPs (EP/CEPM-1–25 and EP/CEPM-2–20) were used as resin matrixes for CFRP. Both EPs featured superior latency and modest-temperature fast curing, especially EP/CEPM-1-25, which had a long shelf life of 30 days and can gel within 20 min at 150 °C. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 classification of EP/CEPM-1-25 were 33.0% and V-0, indicative of superior flame retardancy. The total smoke production and maximum smoke density of EP/CEPM-1-25 displayed 37.7 and 72.1% reductions relative to those of the control EP sample cured by imidazole, demonstrating improved smoke suppression. EP/CEPM-2-20 also displayed satisfactory fire safety, but slightly inferior to EP/CEPM-1-25. As expected, the CFRP composites based on EP/CEPM-1-25 and EP/CEPM-2-20 showed high LOIs (42.5 and 39.0%) and UL-94 V-0 classification due to the inhibition of P-containing groups in CEPM-1 and CEPM-2 on the wick effect. Therefore, this work proposes a facile and ‘green’ methodology to create high-performance, intrinsically fire-safe single-component EPs and CFRP composites.

A magnetic hyperbranched polyamide amine-based quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe method for the detection of organophosphorus pesticide residues

Jun Wang,Zhao-Li Mou,Hui-Ling Duan,Shi-Yao Ma,Jing Zhang,Zhi-Qi Zhang

Magnetic hyperbranched polyamide amine (MHPA) was successfully prepared and applied as a QuEChERS adsorbent to the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC–MS) detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in orange juice. Abundant in amino types and the structure of hyperbranched organic chains make MHPA to possess the clean-up function integrating classic clean-up agent primary secondary amine (PSA) with C 18 modified silica, and the magnetic property makes the operation easier and more time-saving. Compared the performance with classical clean-up agents of PSA and C 18 , better results were obtained with MHPA as adsorbent for the detection of 11 OPPs. Recoveries ranged from 75.2 to 116.2% with the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.1–18.9% and the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.74–8.16 ng/g. Results showed that using MHPA as adsorbent for QuEChERS sample preparation is an effective alternative with simplicity and rapidity.

Low-temperature preparation of novel fluoro-fluoro semi-interpenetrating polymer networks as a strong, tough and safe polymer binder for PBX

Chao Deng,HuiHui Liu,YuTao Cui,XiaoNan Zhu,YongPing Bai,Zhen Hu

This work provides an energy saving strategy for strengthening and toughening fluoroelastomer (linear F2314) by using liquid fluorine rubber (HTLF-700). A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks based on the F2314 and the crosslinked HTLF-700 (namely F23-CLF-X semi-IPNs) were firstly prepared at low temperatures and characterized using FTIR , SEM, EDS , TGA , DSC , DMA and tensile testing et al. The as-prepared F23-CLF-30 semi-IPNs film possessed well interpenetrating co-continuous phases and thus exhibited prominent mechanical performance with the higher tensile strength (33.0 MPa), the larger elongation at break (165.0%), the better mechanical stability at high and low temperature shock and the higher high-temperature creep resistance compared with the F2314. Meanwhile, the arc Brazilian test indicates that F23-CLF semi-IPNs could be a promising candidate as a polymer binder for polymer bonded explosive (PBX).

The safe Laccase@ZIF-8-prodrug system with GSH redox cycle for effective targeted cancer therapy with low off-target toxicity

Yu Zhou,Chengyu Zhang,Yuefei Wang,Jiaxing Zhang,Xiaohui Yan,Shengping You,Wei Qi,Rongxin Su,Zhimin He

Nanotechnology has been widely used in cancer treatment but only a small fraction (0.7 %) of the administered nanoparticle was delivered into a solid tumor, while the remaining fraction causes off-target toxicity in healthy tissues. The activation of prodrugs by exogenous enzymes can be used as an effective anticancer strategy to reduce systemic toxicity. In this study, the [email protected] imidazolate framework-8 ( [email protected] ) enzyme-activated prodrug system was created based on the high catalytic activity of LA in an acidic environment and the pH response (pH∼5.5) of ZIF-8. Quercetin (QU) was selected as the prodrug, which is non-toxic and even beneficial without being activated by LA. LA could be precisely released in the acidic tumor microenvironment for activating nontoxic QU successfully to produce toxic oxidized quercetin (OQU), and the LA was steady loaded on the [email protected] under physiological conditions (pH∼7.4). Especially, the high concentrations of glutathione (GSH) in tumors could accelerate the oxidation of QU by LA. Meanwhile, GSH could be consumed continuously by the reduction of OQU for regenerating QU, thus a LA-QU-GSH redox was formed ingeniously. Therefore, the synergistic effect of OQU toxicity and GSH depletion induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and tumor cell apoptosis. Overall, the [email protected] prodrug system provides ideas for safe and effective cancer treatment with low off-target toxicity.

A Safe Flexible Self-Powered Wristband System by Integrating Defective MnO2–x Nanosheet-Based Zinc-Ion Batteries with Perovskite Solar Cells

Jiangqi Zhao,Zhengjie Xu,Zhan Zhou,Shibo Xi,Yunpeng Xia,Qingyong Zhang,Lanqin Huang,Liang Mei,Yue Jiang,Jinwei Gao,Zhiyuan Zeng,Chaoliang Tan

The booming market of portable and wearable electronics has aroused the requests for advanced flexible self-powered energy systems featuring both excellent performance and high safety. Herein, we report a safe, flexible, self-powered wristband system by integrating high-performance zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) with perovskite solar cells (PSCs). ZIBs were first fabricated on the basis of a defective MnO2–x nanosheet-grown carbon cloth (MnO2–x@CC), which was obtained via the simple lithium treatment of the MnO2 nanosheets to slightly expand the interlayer spacing and generate rich oxygen vacancies. When used as a ZIB cathode, the MnO2–x@CC with a ultrahigh mass loading (up to 25.5 mg cm–2) exhibits a much enhanced specific capacity (3.63 mAh cm–2 at current density of 3.93 mA cm–2), rate performance, and long cycle stability (no obvious degradation after 5000 cycles) than those of the MnO2@CC. Importantly, the MnO2–x@CC-based quasi-solid-state ZIB not only achieves excellent flexibility and an ultrahigh energy density of 5.11 mWh cm–2 (59.42 mWh cm–3) but also presents a high safety under a wide temperature range and various severe conditions. More importantly, the flexible ZIBs can be integrated with flexible PSCs to construct a safe, self-powered wristband, which is able to harvest light energy and power a commercial smart bracelet. This work sheds light on the development of high-performance ZIB cathodes and thus offers a good strategy to construct wearable self-powered energy systems for wearable electronics.

Highly stretchable, non-flammable and notch-insensitive intrinsic self-healing solid-state polymer electrolyte for stable and safe flexible lithium batteries

Cheng Wang,RuiJing Li,Peng Chen,Yongsheng Fu,XinYan Ma,Tao Shen,Baojing Zhou,Ke Chen,JiaJun Fu,Xiaofang Bao,Wuwei Yan,Yong Yang

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with superior self-healing capacity are urgently required for next-generation flexible energy storage devices. Herein, a highly stretchable (extensibility > 4000% and stress > 130 kPa), non-flammable and notch-insensitive intrinsic self-healing solid-state polymer electrolyte (SHSPE) was prepared based on the combination of a poly(HFBM-co-SBMA) network, imidazole-based ionic liquid (EMI–TFSI) and LiTFSI. The incorporation of the imidazole cation and fluorine atom contributed to the formation of supramolecular bonds (ion–dipole interactions) inside the electrolyte framework, thus endowing SHSPE with prominent self-healing ability (recovery time < 60 min, 25 °C). Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the large electrostatic attraction of SO3− towards Li+ liberated it from trapping in the ionic reservoir of TFSI− and EMI+, thereby resulting in a superior tLi+ (0.37). The electrochemical window of SHSPE achieved was 4.9 V vs. Li+/Li, which well satisfies the demand for safe lithium batteries. The optimized SHSPE3 presented excellent interfacial compatible property with a lithium electrode and record adhesion strength (weight loading > 200 g). The as-assembled Li/SHSPE3/LiFePO4 battery delivered a high discharge capacity of 144.8 mA h g−1 at 0.2C, and its capacity retention ratio reached 82% after 100 cycles with a coulombic efficiency of 97%. In particular, the mechanical properties and conductivity of SHSPE3 could fully recover after repeated damage, conferring the derived soft-pack battery excellent anti-fatigue capability. The use of intrinsic self-healing principles in the field of SPEs provides new insight for developing reliable and safe flexible electronic devices.
