Tissue-Like Sodium Alginate-Coated 2D MXene-Based Flexible Temperature Sensors for Full-Range Temperature Monitoring

Lianjia Zhao,Xiyao Fu,Hao Xu,Yiqiang Zheng,Wei Han,Lili Wang

Temperature is a basic physical quantity that is essential to life and productivity. However, continuously and efficiently monitoring a full range of temperatures remains a serious challenge. Herein, a full-range (−20 to 100 °C) flexible temperature sensor is designed using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as an active conductive skeleton and sodium alginate hydrogel as a heat-sensitive coating layer. The sensor exhibits accurate and stable temperature response across the entire range, with a sensitivity of up to 3244% °C −1 . Moreover, it not only dynamically detects liquid nitrogen, but also effectively senses gradually approaching objects within a certain range. Lastly, a temperature monitoring system based on the sensor realizes the perfect monitoring of a cold-storage model. This work will inject new vitality into the development of temperature sensors.

Aggregation behavior of derivatives of sodium alginate and N-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside in aqueous solutions

Junhao Huang,Jiacheng Li,Yuhong Feng,Ke Li,Huiqiong Yan,Pengbo Gao,Ting Xiao,Chunxiu Wang

In this study, the aggregation of N-octyl-β- d -glucopyranoside (OGP) and cholesteryl grafted sodium alginate derivative (CSAD) in solutions was investigated by surface tension method, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that cholesteryl of CSAD and OGP were adsorbed competitively to the gas–solution interface. Four different conformations of complexes were found with the increasing of OGP concentration (C). When C   <   critical aggregation concentration (CAC), the OGP stimulates CSAD association. When CAC   <   C   <   critical micelle concentration (CMC), the OGP was stimulated by hydrophobic interaction, then it compounded CSAD to form polymer–surfactant complexes and some pearl-chain structure complexes. When CMC   <   C   <   adsorbed saturation concentration (C 2 ), the quantity of pearl-chain structure complexes increases, they interact to form core–shell structure complexes, and several core–shell structure complexes formed short string-structures by association of CSAD molecule. When C   >   C 2 , adsorption amount of OGP to CSAD reached saturation, OGP molecules formed small single OGP micelles , while the string-structures were dissolved because the cholesteryl among the micelles were replaced by the single OGP micelles.

Study on the blends of silk fibroin and sodium alginate: Hydrogen bond formation, structure and properties

Zongqian Wang,Haiwei Yang,Zun Zhu

Tremendous attention has been paid to the structure and properties of silk fibroin/sodium alginate (SF/SA) composite films . However, there is no report devoted to study the formation of hydrogen bonds and their effects on the structures and properties. Herein, SF/SA blends with different mass ratios were obtained and the technic of Gaussian multi-peaks-fitting of Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) was used to analyze their hydrogen bonds. From the results, the existence of the intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds was manifested, and the relative strength of the intermolecular hydrogen bond enhanced with the increase of SA content. The contribution of the intermolecular hydrogen bonding was as follows: OH⋯O (ether) > OH … π > OH⋯N. Meanwhile, the increase of intermolecular hydrogen bonding led to the increase of apparent viscosity of the SF/SA blend solutions. Moreover, the relationship between the hydrogen bond and properties (e.g, crystallinity , thermal stability, mechanical properties, morphology and etc.) of SF/SA composite films with different mass ratios were analyzed in detail.

High-strength polyacrylamide/sodium alginate-based hydrogel with extreme environmental tolerance for low-temperature strain sensing

Xuecui Song,Jing Guo,Yihang Zhang,Mengya Liu,Wei Chen,Xinbin Ji,Fucheng Guan

Conductive hydrogels are ideal materials for fabricating flexible electronic devices, but their limited mechanical strength and susceptibility to dehydration and freezing constrain their application in challenging environments. This study successfully developed an environmentally adaptive polyacrylamide/alginate/Zn²⁺/Li⁺ (PAAm/Alg/Zn²⁺/Li⁺, D -PAZL) dual-network hydrogel with high mechanical strength by combining a pre-drying densification strategy with a dual metal salt permeation strategy. The resulting hydrogel showed excellent tensile strength (1.05 MPa), electrical conductivity (5.16 S/m), long-term water retention (retaining ∼73.34 % of its initial mass after 168 h at 25°C and 50 % relative humidity), freeze resistance (<-40°C), and antibacterial activity (inhibition zone diameter: E. coli = 5.3 mm, S. aureus = 5.4 mm). Notably, the incorporation of highly hygroscopic LiBr endows the hydrogel with moisture self-regenerating capabilities, enabling dehydrated hydrogels to autonomously capture moisture from the environment and achieve sustained water retention. The strain sensor constructed from D -PAZL 30 hydrogel exhibits high sensitivity (GF=3.72), rapid response/recovery times (298 ms/303 ms), and long-term cycling stability (>120 tensile cycles after 30 days of exposure in open environments), making it suitable for monitoring human activities across various scales. More importantly, the sensor maintains excellent sensing performance at −40°C (conductivity: 4.37 S/m, GF = 1.95) and can accurately transmit rescue signals via Morse code. This work provides a novel design strategy for developing flexible electronic devices suitable for extreme environments, opening new avenues for wearable technology and communication fields.

Carbon dots grafted polyvinylidene fluoride and sodium alginate composite membrane for fluorescent detection of Fe3+ ions

Wenyuan Xie,Pengfei Li,Ming Yin,Jiali Ding,Tian Tian,Bin Yang,Shi Chen,Yang Zhang,Defeng Wu,Chunhong Wang

Ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) detection in biological and aqueous systems demands sensitive and rapid analytical tools. Although carbon dots (CDs) serve as effective fluorescent probes for Fe 3+ , CDs-based membrane sensors combining fast response with high sensitivity remain underdeveloped. We engineered a CDs-grafted polyvinylidene fluoride/sodium alginate composite membrane (CD- g -PVDF/SA) via phase inversion and surface grafting for Fe 3+ monitoring. The membrane demonstrated linear fluorescence quenching proportional to Fe 3+ concentration to 600 μM (R 2  = 0.995) with a detection limit of 0.10 μM. Significant quenching occurred within 1 min, facilitated by the porous architecture and carboxyl-rich surface that enhanced Fe 3+ accumulation through chelation. This enabled rapid electron transfer from CDs to bound Fe 3+ . The sensor showed Fe 3+ selectivity against interferents in complex matrices, including real water samples. EDTA-mediated Fe 3+ elution fully restored fluorescence, confirming reusability for over fifity cycles. CD- g -PVDF/SA membranes thus offer a robust platform for reliable Fe 3+ detection in environmental and biological applications.

Acid-treated sodium alginate-based composite gel microspheres toward methylene blue removal: Fabrication and mechanistic insights

Hongxing Shi,Qian Zhao,Mingjie Han,Yin Li,Limin Wang,Jiying Men

Dye-contaminated wastewater from the textile and dyeing industries poses severe environmental and health risks due to the persistence and toxicity of synthetic dyes. To address this issue, sodium alginate (SA)-based composite gel microspheres were fabricated via ionic crosslinking with calcium chloride followed by acid exchange to enhance structural stability and adsorption performance. Two types of functionalized adsorbents were synthesized and optimized: SA modified, and with stearyltrimethylammonium chloride (SA/S-H) and SA co -functionalized with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (SA/S/PS-H). Comprehensive characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful preparation and compositional uniformity of the adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics for methylene blue (MB) followed the pseudo-second-order model, reaching equilibrium within 6 h, while isotherm data fitted the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model. Notably, the incorporation of PSSS significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity; at 45 °C, SA/S/PS-H achieved a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 900.91 mg/g, compared to 612.61 mg/g for SA/S-H. The dominant adsorption mechanisms were identified as electrostatic attraction, micropore filling and hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, the microspheres showed excellent reusability despite the interference of co-existing cations. This study presents a simple and scalable approach for constructing high-performance bio-based adsorbents with significant potential for sustainable and practical treatment of dye-laden wastewater.

Preparation of extractant-containing pickering emulsion hydrogel from gelatin/sodium alginate composite materials for Zn2+ adsorption

Fu AiWei,Liang Yaodong,He Yongjun

In the field of aqueous metal ion removal, conventional metal ion extraction methods often face limitations such as low separation efficiency and leaching of extractants, leading to secondary environmental contamination. This study used the Pickering emulsion templating method, with gelatin/sodium alginate complexes as stabilizing particles, to fabricate a Pickering emulsion hydrogel (PEHG) loaded with the zinc extractant di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204). The resulting hydrogel system not only improves emulsion stability but also effectively sequesters Zn 2 ⁺ ions from aqueous solutions. The structure of the materials was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The influence of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial zinc concentration, and contact time on adsorption capacity was investigated by the study. Results showed that at pH 4, the PEHG exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.47 mg g⁻ 1 for Zn 2 ⁺. The adsorption behavior follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and fits the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm, suggesting a chemisorption-dominated mechanism. This corresponds to monolayer adsorption of a single solute from dilute solution onto heterogeneous surfaces. The adsorbent retains over 80% removal efficiency through five regeneration cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability. This study establishes a theoretical framework for preparing extractant-incorporated Pickering emulsion hydrogel microspheres using gelatin/sodium alginate composites. We developed an environmentally friendly and cost-effective adsorbent for heavy metal ions.

Biochar–Cellulose–Sodium Alginate Composite Hydrogel (BCSA) for Methylene Blue Removal: Performance Evaluation and Mechanistic Investigation

Yangyang Zhao,Yu Chang,Rui Li,Tingting Zhang,Chang Xu,Peiyao Sun,Li Liang,Ying Li

To develop efficient and reusable adsorbents for cationic dye removal from dyeing wastewater, this study aimed to develop a novel composite hydrogel adsorbent and systematically investigate its adsorption performance, optimal preparation conditions, and multimechanistic adsorption behavior for methylene blue (MB). We developed BCSA, a composite hydrogel composed of biochar, cellulose, and sodium alginate, as an efficient adsorbent for MB removal. The adsorption performance and underlying mechanism of MB adsorption onto BCSA were systematically explored via batch adsorption experiments, kinetic/isotherm/thermodynamic model fitting, multiple characterization techniques (SEM, BET, FTIR, XPS), and interference/reusability assays. The cellulose content was found to exert a significant influence on the adsorption performance. The optimal adsorption properties were achieved when the mass ratio of biochar to sodium alginate to cellulose was fixed at 2:2:0–2 (based on 2 g: 2 g: 0–2 g of the three components) in 100 mL of deionized water. BCSA exhibited a high adsorption capacity (∼360 mg/g at 298.15 K and pH 11) and maintained an excellent performance over a broad pH range (4–11). Kinetic investigations demonstrated that the adsorption process conformed to the PFO model, and the equilibrium data were most appropriately characterized by the Temkin isotherm. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption. Increased ionic strength (NaCl, Na2SO4) and the presence of a competing dye (RhB) reduced MB uptake, yet BCSA retained significant capacity under competitive conditions. Notably, BCSA exhibited outstanding reusability, retaining more than 85% of its original adsorption capacity following four consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles. Characterization and mechanistic studies indicated that MB removal involved multiple synergistic mechanisms including pore filling, electrostatic interactions, cation exchange, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interactions. These results highlighted BCSA as a highly efficient, cost-effective, and reusable adsorbent, exhibiting considerable potential for MB elimination in aqueous environments and providing a feasible and novel material design strategy for the development of high-performance composite hydrogel adsorbents for industrial cationic dye wastewater treatment.

Phytic acid/sodium alginate/silicon dioxide composite aerogel with high thermal stability and excellent flame retardancy

Wenjie Cao,Junlang Zhang,Lu Sun,Bo Chen,Kongjun Ma,Yizhao Li

This study presents the preparation of a novel composite aerogel material with superior thermal insulation and flame-retardant properties. Using fly ash-based silica aerogel particles as fillers, sodium alginate (SA) as the skeleton, and phytic acid (PA) as the flame retardant, PA/SA/SiO 2 (PSS) composite aerogels were successfully synthesized through a sol-gel process followed by freeze-drying. The PSS aerogels were characterized for their thermal properties using hot-disk thermal analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests, and other analytical techniques. The experimental results demonstrated that the composite aerogel exhibited low thermal conductivity, ranging from 0.0330 to 0.0380 W m −1 K −1 . The PSS composite aerogels achieved a maximum limiting oxygen index of 50.3%, and all samples satisfied the UL-94 V-0 rating with immediate self-extinguishing behavior. Physical cross-linking of PA, SA, and SiO 2 within the composite structure was confirmed through additional analyses. These all indicated the potential of the prepared aerogels for applications in building thermal insulation, high-temperature thermal protection, and fire-resistant materials.

Sodium Alginate Mediated Route for the Synthesis of Monodisperse Silver Nanoparticles Using Glucose as Reducing Agents

Dong Chunfa,Zhang Xianglin,Cai Hao,Cao Chuanliang

A simple and environmentally friendly method was developed for preparing colloidal silver nanoparticles in aqueous solutions using silver nitrate, sodium alginate and glucose as silver precursor, capping agents and reducing agents, respectively. The formation of silver nanoparticles was observed by the change of color from colorless to yellow. The silver nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The TEM images show that the particles are small, well dispersed and spherical in shape with a narrow distribution from 3 nm to 12 nm. The XRD demonstrates that the obtained metallic nanoparticles are single crystalline silver nanoparticles. The effects of the reaction time, the reaction temperature and the concentration of silver ion and reducing agent on the particle size were investigated by the UV-vis spectra. The present process is an excellent candidate for the preparation of silver nanoparticles because it is simple, free-pollutant, inexpensive and easy to perform. The method may be extended to other noble metals, such as Au, Pd and Pt, for medicinal, industrial and technological applications.

A Panax notoginseng saponins-loaded carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized sodium alginate/poloxamer hydrogel for intrauterine adhesions therapy

Haoting Niu,Shuo Tang,Moyong Li,Lilu Guo,Lulu Qin,Liuyun Jiang,Anji Chen,Xiang Hu

A novel multifunctional double-network hydrogel composed of carboxymethyl chitosan-oxidized sodium alginate-poloxamer (PF127) loaded with Panax notoginseng saponins (OSA/CM/PF127@PNS) was developed for intrauterine adhesion therapy. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed acetalation crosslinking between OSA and CMC, as evidenced by characteristic imine peak (1636 cm⁻ 1 ). SEM observations revealed the hydrogel possessed a porous microstructure, with robust self-healing capability validated (by rheological cyclic strain tests), a maximum swelling ratio of 1155%, and sustained PNS release reaching 52.2% at 24 h. In vitro degradation studies indicated the stability under physiological pH (7.4) was enhanced due to the dual-crosslinked network. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibited potent antibacterial activity (> 90% inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus ), antioxidant capacity, and excellent hemocompatibility (< 5% hemolysis). The hydrogel showed exceptional biocompatibility in cellular assays. Notably, PNS loading significantly suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF- α , IL-1 β , IL-6) at the mRNA level and inhibited NF- κ B signaling at the protein level. Furthermore, it promoted angiogenesis in vitro, evidenced by upregulated angiogenesis-related proteins. Therapeutically, the hydrogel significantly accelerated wound healing in a murine model (> 90% closure by day 9) and effectively promoted endometrial regeneration in a rat IUA model. This work provides a novel and promising strategy based on natural polymer-based hydrogels, demonstrating its potential for the treatment of intrauterine adhesions and regenerative medicine.

Injectable sodium alginate hydrogel loaded with plant polyphenol-functionalized silver nanoparticles for bacteria-infected wound healing

Qinsheng Hu,Yong Nie,Jun Xiang,Jinwei Xie,Haibo Si,Donghai Li,Shaoyun Zhang,Mei Li,Shishu Huang

A novel injectable hydrogel dressing (GA@AgNPs-SA) with long-term antimicrobial effect is developed that can accelerate the closure of bacteria-infected wounds. The hydrogel dressing was prepared by cross-linking sodium alginate molecular chains and gallic acid functionalized silver nanoparticles (GA@AgNPs) via calcium ions to form a three-dimensional network. The hydrogel dressing demonstrates excellent biocompatibility and can achieve a sustainable release of silver ions, ensuring a long-term antibacterial activity and inhibiting biofilm formation. Moreover, an in vivo study demonstrates that the GA@AgNPs-SA hydrogel can effectively decrease the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α to alleviate the inflammatory response, and promote angiogenesis by upregulating CD31, α-SMA and VEGF expression, thus significantly accelerating the repair of infected wounds. Given these interesting properties, this antibacterial hydrogel has great potential for application in the clinical care of bacteria-infected wounds.
