A nanocellulose-based film with excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant activity was developed by adding Pickering emulsion which was stabilized by functionalized particles. First, TOCNC- g -PEI nanoparticles were prepared by grafting polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (TOCNCs) and used to stabilize oregano essential oil (OEO) Pickering emulsions. The contact angle of TOCNC- g -PEI nanoparticles was 79.7°, and the minimum inhibitory concentration against L.monocytogenes and E.coli was 0.50 mg/mL. Second, the emulsion droplets were stably dispersed in cellulose nanofibril (CNF) suspensions owing to the depletion stability of CNFs. Finally, the films were dried and emulsion droplets formed oil core/CNF shell microcapsules in active CNF films and completely encapsulated OEO in active CNF films. The inhibition rates of the film against L.monocytogenes and E.coli were 97.28% and 97.23%, respectively. The influence of Pickering emulsion on the active CNF films was discussed. The developed active CNF films have promising application in food preservation and active packaging.

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is the rod-like nano-object derived from natural cellulose with the features of low toxicity and good biocompatibility, widely used as the functional additive and nanomaterial in the biomedicine. Two negatively charged cellulose nanocrystals, CNC and TO-CNC (surface oxidized CNC), are prepared by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis and further surface oxidization. Based on electrostatic adsorption, five trace metal elements (TMEs) including cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) are loaded on the surface of two nanocrystals as the biocompatible nanocarriers. The adsorbed contents of TMEs on two nanocrystals are affected by their surface charge densities and the complexes can keep stability under three varied pH conditions. Two cell lines, viz. human nasopharyngeal cancer cell and normal human bronchial epithelial cell, are selected for the investigation of cytotoxity of these TME-loaded nanocrystals at the concentration range of 0.1–500 µg mL −1 . The high concentrations of TME-loaded nanocrystals will induce the inhibition of cells activity and proliferation, particularly for Pb 2+ - and Cd 2+ -loaded nanocrystals. The cancer cell generally exhibits more sensitivity of cytotoxity to these metal elements than the normal cell, which may be potentially used as the activity inhibitor for specific cells in the future study.

Cellulose is the most widely distributed polymer material in nature and is considered a low-cost, green and recyclable material. Because of its excellent mechanical, optical and thermal properties, people are interested in the research of cellulose-based flexible electronic devices. Among them, bacterial cellulose has a low fiber bundle size during the production process and is easier to process to obtain nanofibers. Hereby, in this study the composite thermoelectric film was prepared from bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs) and copper iodide (CuI), a low-toxicity thermoelectric material. Hydrophobic properties of the composite thermoelectric film were obtained by immersing in AKD emulsion. It showed good mechanical flexibility and high biocompatibility. CuI particles can be recovered successfully through cellulase simulating the degradation process, and the closed-loop of preparation-recycling can be completed. In addition, it achieves an open circuit voltage of 11.3 mV and output power of 2.76 nW at a temperature difference of 70 K. This work not only confirms the environmental protection of CuI/BCNF thermoelectric film, but also provides a strategy for the recycling of thermoelectric equipment.

Flexible sensors have attracted great research interest due to their applications in artificial intelligence, wearable electronics, and personal health management. However, due to the inherent brittleness of common hydrogels, preparing a hydrogel-based sensor integrated with excellent flexibility, self-recovery, and antifatigue properties still remains a challenge to date. In this study, a type of physically and chemically dual-cross-linked conductive hydrogels based on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN)-carrying carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polyacrylamide (PAAM) matrix via a facial one-pot free-radical polymerization is developed for multifunctional wearable sensing application. Inside the hierarchical gel network, TOCNs not only serve as the nanoreinforcement with a toughening effect but also efficiently assist the homogeneous distribution of CNTs in the hydrogel matrix. The optimized TOCN-CNT/PAAM hydrogel integrates high compressive (∼2.55 MPa at 60% strain) and tensile (∼0.15 MPa) strength, excellent intrinsic self-recovery property (recovery efficiency >92%), and antifatigue capacity under both cyclic stretching and pressing. The multifunctional sensors assembled by the hydrogel exhibit both high strain sensitivity (gauge factor ≈11.8 at 100–200% strain) and good pressure sensing ability over a large pressure range (0–140 kPa), which can effectively detect the subtle and large-scale human motions through repeatable and stable electrical signals even after 100 loading–unloading cycles. The comprehensive performance of the TOCN-CNT/PAAM hydrogel-based sensor is superior to those of most gel-based sensors previously reported, indicating its potential applications in multifunctional sensing devices for healthcare systems and human motion monitoring.

Zinc-air batteries with high theoretical energy density have gained tremendous research interest as one of the candidate energy storage devices for flexible and portable electronic devices. Improving the performance of solid-state batteries (such as work stability, service life, etc.) has become a significant problem at present, and the choice of the ideal flexible solid electrolyte material as a “bridge” plays a vital role in flexible batteries. In this work, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based cellulose composite hydrogel electrolyte (HGE) was synthesized by carboxyl modified nanocellulose (C-CNFs), and the optimum adding amount of C-CNFs was screened. The PVA-based cellulose composite HGE had excellent environmental stability and high ion migration efficiency. After standing and full exposure for 48 h at room temperature, the mass loss was only 21.4%, and the initial ion conductivity reaches 3.12 × 10 −1 S·cm −1 . In addition, the composite HGE had a specific improvement in thermal stability and tensile mechanical properties. The assembled flexible zinc-air battery (F-ZAB) showed excellent cycle life and discharge capacity. What's more, the F-ZAB can work continuously and stably at a bending angle of 180° with high flexibility and safety.

Herein, a TEMPO-oxidized cellulose-grafted-polystyrene hypercrosslinked polymer (TOC-PS-HCP) was synthesized facilely by TEMPO oxidation , grafting copolymerization and post crosslinking route. Based on the structural characterization, it was confirmed that TOC-PS-HCP mainly consisted of polystyrene chain on cellulose and rigid crosslinked bridge. Additionally, the as-prepared TOC-PS-HCP displayed appropriate hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 102.44°) and high specific surface area (S BET = 601.20 m 2 ·g ‐ −1 ), which could efficiently recover ethylbenzene and styrene from PO/SM wastewater. The adsorption experiment was conducted to study the recovery performance for ethylbenzene and styrene in the aqueous phase. The results showed that TOC-PS-HCP could recover ethylbenzene and styrene quickly by adsorption process, and maintain a stable recovery rate both in different aqueous conditions and recycle experiments. The adsorption experiment in the simulated wastewater solution showed that TOC-PS-HCP exhibited the greater affinity for ethylbenzene and styrene than other substrates. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the efficient recovery of ethylbenzene and styrene was suggested on the basis of experimental and theoretical results, which may be associated with van der Waals force and π-π stacking.

Because of a weak interface-bonding force between metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and substrates and the loss of customization in structural designs owing to the lack of the regulation of ion sites, MOFs tend to escape from the constructed composite template. In this study, the as-prepared 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized algae cellulose nanofibers (TACFs) were used to chelate metal ions at controllable sites and subsequently firmly entangle the assembled MOF crystals. The distribution of ions and synthesized MOFs inside the gel was monitored using Raman imaging technology, which provided an intuitive approach for visually observing the ions and MOF distribution. Using this technology, the synthesized customizable TACFs@ZIF-67 aerogels exhibited a high specific surface area (734.7 m 2 /g), low density (6.18 mg/cm 3 ), controlled particle distribution, good underwater structural stability, and excellent adsorption of dyes. This study provides a way for solving the dispersion problem of MOFs in nanofibrous aerogels using Raman imaging technology-assisted microcosmic fixed-point design.

Recently, nanosized cellulose materials extraction is extensively interesting from the sources of sustainable materials. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) extraction through green bio-based materials featured as promising interest in the field of science. In this study, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was applied to examine its effectiveness in pretreating the Ficus natalensis barkcloth cellulose (FNBC) for CNF production before 2,2,6,6,-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation. The pretreatment performance of DMSO was evaluated based on the structural and morphological changes. DMSO pretreated FNBC attained the most dramatic morphological changes as compared to untreated cellulose samples. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) shows that there is an extensive structural disruption of FNBC during the pretreatment process, which could be because of outstanding ability to eliminate non-cellulosic materials and amorphous regions from the FNBC, confirmed by the X-ray diffractometry (XRD) showing higher crystallinity values, as well as higher thermal stabilities values of pretreated FNBC samples, were also noted. Overall, this study revealed a tremendously effective and pioneer pretreatment method for fractionating FNBC, to stimulate the successive extraction of cellulose nanofibrils. Furthermore, based on the cellulose and CNF characterizations, this study showed that F. natalensis barkcloth could be considered as an alternative source of cellulose for potential value-added industrial applications such as the food industry, paper making, and biomedicines. In this work, a novel BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi 2 S 3 photocatalyst was designed to efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) with high photocatalytical activity and good stability over a wide pH range. Compared with Cu-doped Bi 2 S 3 , Bi 2 S 3 , BiOCl, BiOCl/Bi 2 S 3 , and Cu-doped BiOCl, the photocatalytical degradation rate of CIP (97.1% at 20 mg/L) over BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi 2 S 3 was enhanced by about 84.77, 44.23, 2.95, 2.27, and 1.96 times within 20 min, respectively. Notably, the BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi 2 S 3 photocatalyst also displayed high photocatalytical performance in the degradation of other antibiotics including norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and tetracycline (40 mL, 20 mg/L; 88.3%, 100%, and 95.2% of degradation rate within 30 min, respectively) under visible light irradiation. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance technique indicated that superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) played crucial roles in the photocatalytic degradation of CIP. Finally, the possible CIP degradation pathways was proposed by detecting the CIP intermediates in photocatalytical reaction process.

Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is the most effective real-time detection method for aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ). Here, we constructed a nanozyme-strip based on MnO 2 nanosheets (MnO 2 NSs) as a catalytic label for detection of AFB 1 . By taking advantage of the MnO 2 -TMB catalytic amplified system, the new test achieves rapid detection with high sensitivity and ultrawide range. The limit of detection of the assay was 15 pg mL −1 , which was over 100-fold lower than the maximum limit set by the European Union (EU) of AFB 1 in foods. In addition, the strip test could offer 7 dynamic detection ranges, spanning 4 orders of magnitude, which could cater to the varieties of limits on AFB 1 residues in foods and feeds set by different countries. The estimated recoveries were in the range of 85.67%-106.38% with coefficients of variations (CVs) less than 9.68%. Overall, the developed approach is a rapid, reliable, sensitive and widely available tool for on-site detection of AFB 1 .

Reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH), holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ), are considered as the main active substances involved in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of the photon energy on the generation of these species has never been examined in detail. In this study, the photocatalytic production of ·OH, h + and ·O 2 − over niobium pentoxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) was investigated as a function of the excitation wavelength. The ESR results clearly show that all three active species can be generated at 355 nm for both pure and C-doped Nb 2 O 5 . At 532 nm, which is well beyond the absorption edge of Nb 2 O 5 (399 nm), only h + and •O 2 − are produced over pure Nb 2 O 5 , while at the same time all three species can be produced over C-doped Nb 2 O 5 . The results of the trapping experiments indicate that •O 2 − and h + are the main reactive species that are responsible for the photocatalytic degradation. The photogenerated holes play a crucial role in the wavelength range of 365–420 nm but become less active with increasing wavelength. •O 2 − shows little dependence on wavelength and is consistently active at all wavelengths between 365 and 630 nm, in particular, for C-doped Nb 2 O 5 . It is concluded that the presence of localized states within the forbidden gap has a profound impact on the photocatalytic activity in the visible-wavelength region.

Medical dressings require good antibacterial and mechanical properties. Polyvinyl alcohol based medical dressings are commercially available, and the antimicrobial properties of chitosan and cerium ions are known, and nanocellulose possesses excellent comprehensive properties, such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan/cerium-nanocellulose (PVA-Cs/Ce-CNF) composite hydrogels are prepared by a freeze-thaw method and characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. It is expected to improve antibacterial activity of the composite hydrogels by adding a small amount of cerium, and their biological activity will not be affected. In addition, the effects of chitosan/cerium (Cs/Ce) complexes and nanocellulose with different contents on properties are investigated. The results show that PVA-Cs/Ce-CNF composite hydrogels have a 3D, highly porous structure with distributed pores of 8–30µm, good skin viscosity, efficient ability to absorb fluid, and suitable water vapor transmission rate of 2000—2500 g m −2 day −1 . Two hydrogels in specific ratio show good strong tensile strength of 132.6 and 130.1 kPa respectively, and their elongation at break are over 400%. The PVA-Cs/Ce-CNF composite hydrogels are non-toxic, and they have inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . These results suggest that the PVA-Cs/Ce-CNF composite hydrogels have great potential as medical dressings.
