Two-dimensional (2D/2D) heterojunction photocatalysts hold great promise for solar-driven antibacterial disinfection owing to their unique interfacial architectures and tunable electronic properties. However, insufficient interfacial electronic coupling and ineffective charge separation still hinder their practical performance. Here, a sulfur-doped g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3 C 2 Tx-MXene (SCN/MXene) 2D/2D heterojunction is rationally designed to enable efficient charge separation and transfer, delivering superior solar-driven antibacterial activity with remarkable stability. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that sulfur doping modulates the electronic structure of g-C 3 N 4 , elevates its Fermi level, and strengthens interfacial electronic coupling with Ti 3 C 2 Tx-MXene, thereby enhancing the built-in electric field and facilitating charge transfer across the interface. Moreover, S-doping induces interfacial charge redistribution, enhancing O 2 adsorption and activation at Ti sites and thereby accelerating the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consequently, SCN/MXene achieves nearly complete inactivation of Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus within 60 min under solar irradiation, outperforming most of the state-of-the-art photocatalysts.

Improving the electrocatalytic performance by modulating the surface and interface electronic structure of noble metals is still a research hotspot in electrocatalysis . Herein, we prepared the heterogeneous catalyst based on the well-dispersed PdCu nanoalloy and the N -doped Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene support (PdCu/N-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via in situ growth of PdCu nanoparticles on the fantastic N-Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets. By exploring the electrocatalytic properties of ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), the composition optimized Pd 1 Cu 1 /N-Ti 3 C 2 T x delivers higher mass activity/specific activity/intrinsic activity (2200.7 mA mg Pd -1 /13.1 mA cm −2 /2.2 s −1 ), anti-poisoning ability and stability than those of Pd/N-Ti 3 C 2 T x , Pd 1 Cu 1 /Ti 3 C 2 T x and commercial Pd/C, which can be attributed to the modified surface electronic features of Pd by the participation of Cu atoms and N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene , as well as the “metal-carrier” effect between the PdCu nanoalloy and N-Ti 3 C 2 T x heterogeneous interface. Furthermore, the conductivity of N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene can be improved by N -doping, and the abundant terminal groups (-O, –OH, -F and N) on the N-Ti 3 C 2 T x surface can promote the electron exchange between PdCu and N-Ti 3 C 2 T x . This work provides an effective strategy for engineering heterogeneous electrocatalysts for enhanced electrocatalytic EOR by adjusting the interfacial electronic structure of noble metals.

As the candidates for large-scale hydrogen storage , liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) exhibit evident advantages in hydrogen storage density and convenience of storage and transportation. Among them, NECZ (N-ethylcarbazole)/12H-NECZ (dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole) is considered as a typical system with the lower hydrogenation/dehydrogenation temperature. However, the low dehydrogenation efficiency restrict its commercial applications. In this work, the single-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was employed as the support to load the Pt nanoparticles for the 12H-NECZ dehydrogenation reaction. The effect of transition metals , loading amounts and morphologies of catalysts were analyzed. It was found that the 3 wt% Pt/S–Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with 100% conversion, 91.55% selectivity of NECZ and 5.62 wt% hydrogen release amount at 453 K, 101.325 kPa for 7 h. The product distributions and kinetics analysis suggested that the elementary reaction from 4H-NECZ to NECZ was the rate-limiting step. The selectivity of NECZ is sensitive to the dehydrogenation temperature. Combined with the XRD , SEM , HRTEM , XPS , BET and FT-IR results, it could be indicated that the special two-dimension structure of S–Ti 3 C 2 T x and electronic effect between Pt and S–Ti 3 C 2 T x enhanced the dehydrogenation efficiency of 12H-NECZ. The measurements of cyclic dehydrogenation indicated that the Pt/S–Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibited good stability after 42 h. This work brought a new strategy for the design of efficient catalysts using two-dimensional materials in the applications of the liquid organic storage hydrogen technology .

The advent of hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors has generated enormous research interest due to their outstanding biocompatibility. However, developing hydrogel-based strain sensors with high gauge factor, wide detection range and multifunctional integration is still challenging. Here, a novel multifunctional hydrogel-based strain sensor is composed of two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides (Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene) and Polyacrylamide- co -Poly- N -hydroxyethylene acrylamide/Carboxy Methyl Cellulose-Fe 3+ dual network structure (PAAm-PHEMAA/CMC-Fe 3+ ) with multiple hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions. The dual network design endowed the hydrogel-based human motion sensor with fast rebound and high tensile properties , enabling it to exhibit high sensitivity (response time ∼120 ms and gauge factor ∼1.62), and a wide detection range (0–700%), including joint movements as well as more subtle human motions (facial micro-expression changes and speech). More importantly, the hydrogel-based strain sensor exhibited excellent EMI (41 dB, X-band) and UV shielding properties (365 nm, 100%, 0.5 mm) due to the synergy of porous structure, moderate conductivity, and ionic solution environment. Moreover, it demonstrated robust adhesion (29 kPa), high shape adaptability, and self-healing capability. This innovative multi-functional flexible sensor design provides guidance for the development, research and application of high-performance flexible wearable materials.

Frequently used aqueous electrolytes in MXene-based Zn-ion hybrid microsupercapacitors (MSCs) limit their cycling and rate stability. The use of metal and nonmetal additives in electrolytes for the performance improvement of Zn-ion MSCs is considered a valid method. Herein, we propose an additive assisted Zn(CF3SO3)2 electrolyte as a redox-active electrolyte to prepare a flexible MXene-based Zn-ion hybrid MSC by a facile spraying method, and it consists of a conductive Ti3C2Tx–LiCl current collector and a Ti3C2Tx–DMSO cathode. In the process of the current density change (from 5 A cm−3 to 30 A cm−3 and then to 5 A cm−3), the capacity retention of the as-fabricated MSC with K3Co(CN)6 additive is over 99.0%, which is higher than 96.7% for the MSC with CKNSe additive and 82.3% for the MSC without an additive. Moreover, the designed MSC with the redox-active K3Co(CN)6 electrolyte exhibits a maximal capacitance retention of 70% after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the flexible Zn-ion MSC with the Ti3C2Tx MXene cathode and a redox-active electrolyte was used to power a Ti3C2Tx based pressure sensor; the excellent press response of the integrated system not only provides insights into the development of large capacity and long-period stable energy storage devices, but also paves a new way for the development of capacitor-sensor integrated systems.

As a controllable, simple method with few side effects, near-infrared (NIR) light-based photothermal therapy (PTT) has been proven an effective cancer therapeutic approach. However, PTT-induced inflammation is a potential negative factor. And the overexpressed heat shock proteins (HSPs) by cancer cells can protect them from hyperthermia during PTT. In this work, small-size Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with high photothermal conversion efficiency in the region of NIR, high cargo loading capability and good free radical scavenging capability were chosen for cancer PTT and anti-inflammation. And (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) was applied to form EGCG/Fe metal-polyphenol nanodots on the nanosheets. EGCG being released in acid cancer cells could reduce the expression of HSPs and could be used for anti-inflammation. As a result, the complex nanosheets named MXene@EGCG could achieve enhanced cancer PTT and be anti-inflammatory. Both in vitro and in vivo studies proved the good photothermal ability of MXene@EGCG and demonstrated that it could inhibit the expression of HSPs in tumor cells and relieve PTT-induced inflammation. Therefore, the nanosheets show good results in tumor ablation with a low level of inflammation, which provides another possibility for cancer therapy. Statement of significance Photothermal therapy (PTT)-induced inflammation plays an essential role in some important stages of tumor development and is unfavorable for cancer treatment. And hyperthermia leads to the overexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in cancer cells, which limits the therapeutic effect of PTT. Therefore, we coated small-size Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)/Fe metal-polyphenol nanodots and named them as MXene@EGCG. This system shows a good photothermal conversion efficiency at 808 nm. And it can release EGCG in cancer cells to inhibit the expression of HSPs, thus achieving an enhanced cancer PTT. Both MXene and EGCG can also diminish the PTT-trigged inflammation. Both in vitro and in vivo studies prove the good anti-cancer PTT effect and anti-inflammation capability of MXene@EGCG.

The accessibility of photogenerated charge transfer channels and the activity of catalytic reaction sites are critical for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a 3D porous N-doped Ti3C2Tx MXene matrix confining Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles (N-TCT@CZS) was fabricated via electrostatic absorption, thermal nitridation, and in situ growth processes, forming a stable heterojunction with excellent photocatalytic HER activity. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses indicated that N dopants could induce more unsaturated structures and increase the abundance of active sites, while the 3D N-TCT MXene matrix with a stable scaffold configuration and interconnected porous channels could promote charge transfer kinetics, which synergistically realizes electronic structure modulation and spatial configuration design of photocatalysts. Besides, the Cd–N bonds between the N-TCT MXene and CZS enhance the interfacial interaction and expedite the directional interfacial charge transfer, thus substantially boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Consequently, the optimal N-TCT@CZS-3 nanohybrid photocatalyst possesses a superior photocatalytic HER rate of 10.90 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 4.8 times higher than that of the pristine CZS nanoparticles. This work proposes an applicable avenue for designing and fabricating novel functional 3D MXene-supported semiconductor materials for solar energy conversion.

Lightweight high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with excellent thermal conductivity and outstanding EMI shielding performances are highly satisfactory for modern integrated electronic and telecommunication systems in the fields of military, aerospace, smart and wearable electronics, and artificial intelligence. Herein, we prepared a cellular MXene@silver nanowire (Ag NW) composite film by a simple vacuum-assisted filtration process induced by potassium ions and freeze-drying after rapid pre-freezing with liquid nitrogen. The construction of the cellular structure can effectively improve the shielding effectiveness. Upon introducing the Ag NWs in the system, the interconnection networks were constructed for the MXene@Ag NW composite film, which significantly improved the electrical and thermal conductivity, further enhancing EMI shielding performance. The composite film with 80 wt% Ag NWs can deliver a high conductivity of 1245 S cm−1, ultrahigh EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of 81.11 dB in the X-band, and a high thermal conductivity of 26.19 W m−1 K−1. The prepared MXene@Ag NW cellular composite film has the advantages of high shielding efficiency and good thermal conductivity, which has important application value in manufacturing lightweight, high shielding efficiency materials and avoiding heat accumulation of electronic devices.

Two-dimensional nanomaterials have exhibited considerable potential for gas sensing applications in recent years owing to their unique physical and chemical properties such as a large surface-to-volume ratio, abundant edge sites, versatile surface chemistry, etc. Herein, we demonstrate a two-dimensional Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposite gas sensor for ammonia detection at room temperature. MoS2 nanosheets are grown on an etched Ti3C2TX MXene surface by a hydrothermal method, and rectangular TiO2 particles are derived from Ti3C2TX MXene in the hydrothermal process. Meanwhile, nanocomposites with different Ti3C2TX MXene additions are also designed for gas sensing performance comparison. Such a novel hierarchical structure based gas sensor (MTM-0.2 sensor) exhibits fast response/recovery time and excellent long-term stability to ammonia. Meanwhile, outstanding selectivity to ammonia against triethylamine, trimethylamine, n-butanol, acetone, formaldehyde, and nitrogen dioxide at room temperature is also shown. The sensor shows 1.79-fold and 2.75-fold enhancement in the gas sensing response toward 100 ppm ammonia compared with the pristine Ti3C2TX MXene and MoS2 gas sensors, respectively. And its detection limit for ammonia is 500 ppb. The sensing mechanisms of the Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposites toward ammonia are attributed to the layered nanostructure, p–n heterojunction created at the interface of p-type Ti3C2TX MXene and n-type MoS2. Finally, density-functional theory (DFT) is performed to investigate the adsorption behavior and charge transfer of ammonia molecules on the surface of the nanocomposite. The synthesized Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposite can be regarded as a promising candidate for high-performance ammonia detection at room temperature.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold their promise in renewable next-generation energy storage technologies due to low cost and high theoretical energy. Herein, a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-carbon nanocage-sulfur (MXene/CNC/S) cathode is synthesized by a simple process with high conductivity and outstanding performance in Li-S batteries. The cathode with an unusually high sulfur content of 80% demonstrates an eminent initial specific capacity of 1275.5 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 C and retains 823.8 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles, showing a high retention rate of 64.6%. Besides, it exhibits a great conductive feature for rate performance, delivering 630.5 mAh·g −1 capacity when the current rises to 4 C. In this composition electrode, the excellent electrochemical performance indicates that MXene can effectively adsorb polysulfides to help batteries achieve long-term cyclic performance. On the other hand, the introduction of CNC strongly improves the specific surface area of the cathode and constructs a high conductive network to reduce the stacking of MXene, thus exhibiting better rate performance and increasing utilization of sulfur. Our work holds future technological significance as it could accelerate progress towards lithium-sulfur batteries with high sulfur content and less pricy conductive materials.

As a promising photoanode material, TiO 2 confronts two challenges, weak visible light absorption and low catalytic activity for water oxidation , which limit its photoelectrochemical performance toward water oxidation. Doping and co-catalyst deposition provide effective ways to extending the light-absorption spectral range and accelerating the water-oxidation kinetics, respectively. Herein, an efficient TiO 2 -based photoelectrode for water oxidation is prepared by Fe doping and electrophoretic Ti 3 C 2 T x deposition. The Fe doping effectively extends the light absorption of TiO 2 toward visible region. Owing to the excellent water oxidation activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x , its deposition greatly accelerates the water-oxidation kinetics, which in turn enhances the photocarrier separation and injection efficiencies. The well-designed Fe-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibits a photoelectrochemical current density of 1.23 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is much higher than those of Fe-TiO 2 . The maximum IPCE value is enhanced from 64.7% of Fe-TiO 2 to 92.8% of Fe-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x at 380 nm. Our findings provide an effective way to fabricate efficient photoanode for water oxidation and are helpful to understanding the photoelectrochemical performance of hybrid nanostructures.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising energy materials due to their considerable theoretical capacity, but they also suffer from inherent poor electrical conductivity and agglomeration problems. In this study, a composite electrode material with a unique structure was synthesized by in situ growth of nanoscale NiVAl-LDH on the surface of few-layered Ti3C2Tx–MXene. The strong interfacial connection and enhanced electronic coupling between the two components enhance the structural stability and electrical conductivity of the material, significantly enhancing its redox kinetics. Moreover, this composite structure effectively prevents the aggregation and restacking of Ti3C2Tx–MXene and NiVAl-LDH nanosheets, ensuring the complete exposure of active sites. Demonstrating exceptional electrochemical capabilities, the composite electrode showcases a distinct capacitance of 186.7 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, it maintains an impressive 84.7% of its capacitance after enduring 5000 charge–discharge cycles at a high current density of 10 A g−1. The assembled asymmetrical supercapacitor device demonstrates a respectable energy density of 51.6 W h kg−1 at a power density of 800.0 W kg−1, as well as excellent cycling stability (89.1% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g−1).
