Ultra-small tin dioxide coated with double carbon to achieve low strains and stable sodium storage

Zhuo Yan,Xiaoqin Cheng,Huijun Li,Maosheng Lu,Xiaomin Wang

Tin dioxide as a kind of conversion-alloying-type anode material holds great promise for sodium ion anode material due to its large theoretical capacity, low working potential advantages, Nonetheless, its practical application been significantly hammered by the slow reaction kinetics and volume expansion problem during the cyclic process. Hence double carbon coating strategy and nanoengineering is employed to prepared SnO 2 @C/rGO composites as SIBs anodes. The ultra-small size of SnO 2 can significantly reduce the internal strain, shorten the ion diffusion distance, and improve the low-reversible conversion reaction and coulombic efficiency (CE). The structural design of the double carbon coated further improves the electrical conductivity and structural stability of the composite. It was demonstrated by XRD refinement that SnO 2 @C/rGO has low strain which enhances the reaction kinetics and realizes high reversible capacity during charging and discharging. The dual‑carbon structure is able to maintain the specific capacity of 316.8 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g after 1000 cycles, and at the same time, it has excellent rate performance (231.2 mAh/g at 5.0 A/g). This provides a new insight into the application of modified materials with double carbon coated to sodium-ion battery anode.

Combination of Pyrolysis and Physical Separation to Recover Copper and Tin from Waste Printed Circuit Boards

Wang Xun,Jiao Fen,Qin Wenqing,Li Zihan,Wang Na,Liu Wei,Yang Congren

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are an essential component in electronic waste (e-waste), and contain a number of valuable metals (e.g., Cu, Sn) as well as non-metal resources (e.g., brominated epoxy resin). Currently, most of the non-metals are disposed of in landfills, causing environmental problems. In this study, a combination of pyrolysis and physical separation is proposed to recover valuable resources, including both metals and non-metals, from WPCBs. The WPCBs were pyrolyzed at 700°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. Pyrolysis oil and gas can be reused as fuel for the pyrolysis of WPCBs. Metals like copper, tin, and iron in the pyrolysis residues were separated by selective crushing, sieving, gravity separation, and magnetic separation. Finally, rich copper (Cu 82.21%, Sn 1.47%), rich tin (Cu 53.20%, Sn 13.43%), rich iron (Fe > 63%), and non-metal products were obtained, and the total recoveries of copper, tin, and iron were 95%, 86%, and 76%, respectively.

Pt Supported on Carbon-coating Antimony Tin Oxide as Anode Catalyst for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

D.-H. Yang,X.-L. Sui,L. Zhao,G.-S. Huang,D.-M. Gu,Z.-B. Wang

A qualified support material for Pt must has numerous deposition sites for Pt nanoparticles and great electrical conductivity. Metal oxide materials are potential support materials for Pt nanoparticles. However, they have less deposition sites for Pt and worse electronic conductivity than carbon. Carbon over the surface of metal oxide materials can improve the above shortage. In this paper, antimony tin oxide (ATO) coated by carbon layer has been successfully prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method (PECVD). PECVD can provide a brief approach to enwrap metal oxide with carbon at low temperatures. Besides, it becomes easier to control the amount of carbon by the PECVD to create much more two-phase interface for Pt deposition. The carbon layer promotes the electronic conductivity of ATO and provides more deposition sites for platinum nanoparticles, which directly influence the size of Pt nanoparticles as well as the electrochemical active surface areas. The as-prepared catalyst exhibits excellent activity for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), which is twice of that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Meanwhile, it has better stability than the commercial Pt/C.

Ordered Mesoporous Tin Oxide Semiconductors with Large Pores and Crystallized Walls for High-Performance Gas Sensing

Xingyu Xiao,Liangliang Liu,Junhao Ma,Yuan Ren,Xiaowei Cheng,Yongheng Zhu,Dongyuan Zhao,Ahmed A. Elzatahry,Abdulaziz Alghamdi,Yonghui Deng

Owing to their distinct chemical and physical properties, mesoporous metal oxide semiconductors have shown great application potential in catalysis, electrochemistry, energy conversion, and energy storage. In this study, mesoporous crystalline SnO2 materials have been synthesized through an evaporation-induced co-assembly (EICA) method using poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene diblock copolymers as the template, tin chlorides as the tin sources, and tetrahydrofuran as the solvent. By controlling conditions of the co-assembly process and employing a carbon-supported thermal treatment strategy, highly ordered mesoporous SnO2 materials with a hexagonal mesostructure (space group P63/mmc) and crystalline pore walls can be obtained. The mesoporous SnO2 is employed for fabricating gas sensor nanodevices which exhibit an excellent sensing performance toward H2S with high sensitivity (170, 50 ppm) and superior stability, owing to its high surface area (98 m2/g), well-connected mesopores of ca. 18.0 nm, and high density of active sites in the crystalline pore walls. The chemical mechanism study reveals that both SO2 and SnS2 are generated during the gas sensing process on the SnO2-based sensors.

Micro/Nano-Structures Mediated Tunable Amplified Spontaneous Emission in Reduced-Dimensional Tin-Perovskites at Room Temperature

Ning Liu,Zicheng Li,Xinyu Duan,Zehui Zhou,Yuelan He,Yujie Liu,Cong Zou,Weidong Shen,Lijing Chen,Kun lv,Ping Chen,Beibei Xu,Jianrong Qiu

Large organic cations in reduced-dimensional perovskites (RDPs) can form quantum wells and block moisture and oxygen, improving the efficiency and stability of perovskite emitters. However, the strong Auger recombination in RDPs, especially 2D perovskite, raises the lasing threshold and presents a significant challenge for the realization of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at room temperature. In this study, PEA 2 SnI 4 perovskite nanosheets with varying sizes, stacking structures, and morphologies were successfully designed. A systematic investigation of their excited-state processes was conducted, establishing an optimization strategy centered on size/structure-dependent Auger recombination and regional-induced excitons recombination. This approach led to the achievement of low-threshold room-temperature ASE. Furthermore, by specific nano-structure design, abnormal value dependent Auger recombination strength was observed in PEA 2 FA n-1 Sn n I 3n+1 series with the lowering of threshold. It clarifies the decade-long controversy that the four-level structure, but not Auger recombination, plays a key role on the decrease of lasing threshold as n value increases in some cases. It enables the broadband tunable ASE from the visible to the near-infrared region. This work addresses the long-standing problem of achieving low-threshold, room-temperature ASE in RDPs. It will not only promote the development of RDP lasers, but also LEDs.

Lewis Base–Zwitterion Dual Additives Enable Efficient Blade-Coated Tin-lead Perovskite Solar Cells and Tandems

Yanghong Wu,Shiqiang Duan,Meng Li,Maoyuan Wu,Qiaoyan Ma,Peng Liu,Yuansong Lu,Zhengkai Xu,Anlu He,Mengen Ma,Shaohang Wu,Chong Liu,Jiandong Fan,Yaohua Mai

High-efficiency all-perovskite tandem solar cells are severely constrained by narrow-bandgap Sn-Pb subcells, which confront an inherent contradictory bottleneck: Sn 2+ -rich precursors undergo fast, unregulated crystallization during blade coating, yet Sn 2+ cations are easily oxidized to harmful Sn 4+ under ambient conditions. Conventional single additive materials can only address one of the two critical drawbacks instead of balancing both. Herein, we develop a dual-additive strategy combining Lewis-base amidinothiourea (FATU) and zwitterionic glycine hydrochloride (GlyHCl) with two core synergistic functions. FATU utilizes C═S and −NH 2 groups to preferentially chelate Sn 2+ , inhibiting its oxidation and pre-nucleation aggregation; GlyHCl simultaneously coordinates Pb 2+ and Sn 2+ to slow global crystallization kinetics and suppress heterogeneous nucleation. This dual synergy fabricates high-quality Cs 0.1 FA 0.5 MA 0.4 Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 films with over 800 nm large grains and minimized trap density. The blade-coated single-junction device reaches 21.02% PCE with V OC boosted from 0.797 to 0.850 V. When integrated with a 1.76 eV wide-bandgap top cell, the tandem achieves 27.84% peak efficiency (stabilized at 27.33%) and retains more than 75% initial efficiency after 680 h continuous MPP tracking. This work offers a practical pathway for scalable blade-coating production of high-performance all-perovskite tandem photovoltaics.

In situ condensation reaction modulates crystallization kinetics of tin-lead perovskites for high-efficiency photovoltaic devices

Cui Yan,Mingzhe Zhu,Jiakang Zhang,Wenjian Yan,Lin Ma,Jinxian Yang,He Sun,Haokun Jiang,Tao Wang,Zhongmin Zhou

While the regulation of crystallization kinetics is crucial for achieving high-performance tin–lead perovskites (ABX 3 ), current strategies have primarily focused on metal-halide coordination. In this study, we introduced L-tryptophan (L-Trp) as a multifunctional additive into the perovskite precursor solution to modulate crystallization kinetics through targeted interactions with the A-site organic cation. Along with experimental evidence (e.g., 1 H NMR, mass spectrometry), transition state calculations revealed that L-Trp targeted formamidinium iodide (FAI) through a trace-water-mediated in-situ condensation reaction and generated L-TrpHI and L-TrpFA. The solvation of these L-Trp derivatives with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which retarded DMSO desorption during annealing, effectively slowed the crystallization kinetics of perovskites. This tailored crystallization regulation yielded uniform perovskite films with improved crystallization quality. Furthermore, L-Trp derivatives strongly coordinated with Sn 2+ , which inhibited its oxidation and passivated defect states, thus suppressing non-radiative recombination. The optimized surface electronic structure of the perovskites further facilitated charge extraction and transport. As a result, the modified perovskite solar cells achieved a champion power conversion efficiency of 23.72%, with remarkable long-term operational stability, retaining 90% of their initial efficiency after 1350 h under continuous one-sun illumination. Mediated by trace water, the in-situ reaction between L-Trp and FAI generates L-Trp derivatives, which can undergo solvation with DMSO to delay the crystallization kinetics, thereby providing Sn-Pb PSCs with an efficiency of 23.72%. Influence of Cycloalkane Carboxylic Acid Ring Size on Tribological Properties of TiN Coatings Under Lubricated Conditions

Xiaojing Fu,Yaping Fan,Guoxian Jiang,Changsheng Zheng,Yong Wan

This study aimed to investigate the tribological properties and lubrication mechanisms of three cycloalkane carboxylic acids (cyclopropane, cyclobutane, and cyclopentane) as additives in PAO4 base oil. The testing was conducted in a TiN/steel tribosystem under ball-on-flat reciprocating sliding motion with a maximum contact pressure of 0.9 GPa. Notably, cyclopropane carboxylic acid exhibited excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties, achieving a microscale coefficient of friction of 0.008 and a wear rate of only 7.0 × 10−8mm3/N·m. XPS and Raman analyses of the tribofilms revealed that all three cycloalkane carboxylic acids underwent tribochemical reactions during frictional motion to form carbon-based tribofilms with varying contents. Moreover, cyclopropane carboxylic acid exhibited significant tribochemical reactions, forming carbon-based tribofilm with superior tribological properties. This behavior can be attributed to the stability and size of the carbon ring in cycloalkane, which influences its dissociation and the formation of carbon-based tribofilm under high-temperature and contact stress conditions.

Synthesis, structure, optoelectronic properties and stability of the lead-free tin-based organic-inorganic hybrid material

Jiaxing Qi,Zixiao Qin,Yangchun Mo,Yani Xue,Xiaopeng Wei,Jilin Wang,Fei Long

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have emerged as promising materials, benefiting from their affordable production, synthetic simplicity, and superior optoelectronic properties. In this study, diisopropylamine was selected as the A-site organic ligand to construct tin-based halide organic–inorganic hybrid crystals, and synthesized two tin-based organic-inorganic hybrid single crystals, (C 6 H 16 N) 2 SnCl 6 and (C 6 H 16 N) 2 SnBr 6 , using the solvent evaporation method. A series of characterizations, including single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, were conducted on both single crystals. The test results show that (C 6 H 16 N) 2 SnCl 6 belongs to P2 1 /n in the monoclinic system, and (C 6 H 16 N) 2 SnBr 6 belongs to the Pca2 1 space group in the orthorhombic system. The cations of both crystals were [C 6 H 16 N] + , and the anions were [SnCl 6 ] 2− and [SnBr 6 ] 2− respectively. Both belong to the zero-dimensional perovskite single crystals with octahedral coordination. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy studies indicated the presence of [C 6 H 16 N] + , [SnCl 6 ] 2− and [SnBr 6 ] 2− . The good thermal stabilities of the two crystals are 180 °C and 190 °C respectively. The band gap of (C 6 H 16 N) 2 SnCl 6 was 3.98 eV, and that of (C 6 H 16 N) 2 SnBr 6 was approximately 2.78 eV. Both belong to wide band gap semiconductor materials. This research contributes to the advancement of environmentally benign, thermally stable organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Tackling the Scaling Relations in Ammonia Synthesis through Light-Driven Catalysis over LiH-Mediated Ru/TiN

Zhang Xibo,Tao Haolan,Wang Yefei,Zhao Yang,Wang Yuting,He Teng,Guo Jianping,Lian Cheng,Chang Fei

Photothermal catalysis offers a promising pathway for sustainable ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. However, its performance is constrained by intrinsic scaling relations between dinitrogen activation and subsequent hydrogenation steps. To overcome this long-standing bottleneck, we design a Ru-LiH/TiN catalyst that enables a light-driven reaction cascade, wherein lithium hydride (LiH) serves as a dynamic “nitrogen mediator”. Under ambient pressure and illumination at 3.3 W·cm –2 , the catalyst achieves an unprecedented NH 3 production rate of 5574.3 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 (equivalent to 428.8 mmol·g Ru –1 ·h –1 ), representing a 31-fold improvement over its thermal-catalytic counterpart and a 52-fold enhancement relative to Ru/TiN. Notably, the Ru-LiH/TiN exhibits robust catalytic stability over 50 h, in stark contrast to the rapid deactivation (<1 h) commonly observed in thermal catalysis due to NH x ( x = 1–3) accumulation-induced adsorbate poisoning. Mechanistic studies reveal a relayed photothermal catalysis mechanism: photogenerated hot electrons facilitate N 2 activation on Ru sites, followed by nitrogen transfer to the LiH-TiN interface to form destabilized [Li–Ti–N-H] intermediates; subsequently, photoexcited LiH liberates reactive hydrogen species that participate in nitrogen hydrogenation. This work presents a new strategy that simultaneously weakens the strong adsorption of NH x on the catalyst and enables efficient NH 3 production under mild conditions.

Lewis acid dilution suppresses non-radiative recombination in near-infrared-responsive tin poly(heptazine imide) photocatalysis

Yuchun Wen,Guoqiang Zhang,Hui Li,Peixin Zhang,Chuanxin He,Hongwei Mi

A novel near-infrared-responsive Sn-PHI has been developed. • Revealing the microscopic mechanism of the Lewis acid dilution effect for the first time. • Breaking the trade-off between broad spectrum absorption and high crystallinity. Tin poly(heptazine imide) shows superior light absorption over traditional alkali/alkaline earth metal counterparts. Tin(II) chloride (SnCl 2 ) is a convenient tin source but its strong Lewis acidity introduces structural defects that cause non-radiative recombination of photogenerated carriers. To address this issue, we dilute the Lewis acidity of SnCl 2 using five types of chloride salts. Taking LiCl as an example, molecular dynamics simulations confirm that the introduction of LiCl transforms the coordination environment of Sn 2 + from N-dominated to Cl - -dominated, reducing the Sn–N coordination number, thereby validating the Lewis acidity dilution effect. Experimentally, appropriate LiCl addition buffers SnCl 2 Lewis acidity, suppresses excessive and deep nitrogen vacancies, and thus significantly suppresses non-radiative recombination. This Lewis acidity dilution strategy resolves the contradiction between framework integrity and broadband light absorption, paving the way for novel crystalline carbon nitride photocatalysts with broad-spectrum response. Homogenizing Electron and Hole Transport Layers in Tin Perovskite Solar Cells to Enhance Photocurrent and Voltage

Qinyu Ning,Donghao Miao,Mingyu Ma,Zihao Zhu,Yi Chen,Yuchen Ding,Wenzhuo Li,Wei Zhou,Yuedong Shi,Zhijun Ning,Qixi Mi

Tin perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) are considered as a sustainable alternative to their lead-containing counterparts, offering an ideal bandgap, a more stable crystal structure, and better semiconducting properties. However, the fabrication of efficient and able TPSCs has been a challenging task. Among the main components of TPSCs, herein, we investigated the transport layers and their interface with the perovskite layer. Several microscopy techniques revealed inhomogeneity in the common hole transport layer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and the electron transport layer (ETL), indene-C60 bisadduct (ICBA). A hydrogen-bond donor molecule d-sorbitol modified the microstructure of PEDOT:PSS, increasing its conductivity and the crystallization density of the overlying perovskite layer. Blending 1% poly(methyl methacrylate) into ICBA rendered a uniform ETL, which facilitated electron transport across its interface with tin perovskite. The photocurrent density, open-circuit voltage, and fill factor of the TPSCs were all enhanced to achieve a power conversion efficiency of 15.8% and excellent short-term stability. Our findings address an often-neglected aspect of device fabrication and provide a new approach to boosting the performance and reproducibility of TPSCs.
