As a discarded byproduct of jujube ( Z . jujuba ), its seeds contain various biological components. Response surface methodology was used to optimize ultrasound-assisted heating extraction conditions of polysaccharides from Z . jujuba cv . Ruoqiangzao seeds (ZJSPs). The optimal parameters were as follows: temperature 83.1 °C, time 100 min, ultrasonic power 140 W, and water-material ratio 33.5 mL/g, allowed a maximum yield of 1.97%. One main fraction (ZJSPs-1) was successfully purified by ion-exchange and gel-permeation chromatography. With a molecular weight of 342 kDa, ZJSPs-1 was composed of arabinose, glucose, xylose, galactose and rhamnose. The presence of pyranose-form sugars as well as both α- and β-configurations was validated by FT-IR and 1 H NMR. TG/DSC indicated that ZJSPs-1 has a favorable thermal stability. XRD suggested that ZJSPs-1 exhibited both crystalline and amorphous portions. ZJSPs-1 was in aggregates of homogenous-dense honeycomb like structures observed by SEM and AFM. ZJSPs-1 possessed antitumor activities against HeLa cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner at 24 and 48 h with IC 50 of 164.6 and 87.1 μg/mL, respectively. Fluorescent microscopic and flow cytometry revealed that ZJSPs-1 inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cells through apoptosis. Z . jujuba seeds are good sources for antitumor polysaccharides in pharmaceutical and food industries.

The Ag 2 CO 3 /Cu-BiVO 4 (ACCB) Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a combined hydrothermal and deposition method to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for efficient degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). Compared with conventional photocatalysts, the as-prepared Z -scheme heterojunction effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers via a Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. Systematic characterizations including XRD, SEM, and XPS verified the successful preparation of the ACCB Z -scheme heterojunction and the incorporation of Cu, both of which play key roles in enhancing PDS activation and NOR degradation. Photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrated that ACCB-100 exhibited optimal performance among the ACCB catalyst series under visible light irradiation, achieving a NOR degradation efficiency of 95.68% within 120 min, which was significantly superior to those of the pristine single-component materials. Further cyclic degradation experiments showed that ACCB-100 still retained a degradation efficiency of 88.62% after five cycles, indicating its excellent photocatalytic stability. Simultaneously, radical trapping experiments and ESR analyses demonstrated that h + , ·O 2 − , ·OH and SO 4 ·- were the active species involved in the photocatalytic degradation of NOR.

Rational design of Z-scheme heterojunction is known to be a good strategy for promoting photogenerated charge efficient separation. In this paper, a direct Z-scheme Ag 2 O/Bi 2 MoO 6 heterostructured microspheres with good interfacial properties were successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis-coprecipitation-calcination decomposition. Various techniques such as Transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) were used to reveal the structure, morphology, composition, electrochemical and optical properties of the target product. The catalytic activity of the as-prepared composite was evaluated by visible light degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and transient photocurrent. As expected, the results showed that 1:5 Ag 2 O/Bi 2 MoO 6 exhibited the optimal catalytic performance. And the visible degradation efficiency is up to 86% in 90 min, which was 2.69 times higher than that of Bi 2 MoO 6 (32%). And 1:5 Ag 2 O/Bi 2 MoO 6 exhibited the highest photocurrent efficiency (0.8 μA/cm 2 ). Meanwhile, the efficiency of 1:5Ag 2 O/Bi 2 MoO 6 keep 90% after four cycles. The enhanced activity can be attributed to the formation of a good interfacial contact between Ag 2 O and Bi 2 MoO 6 . In addition, hole and superoxide were identified as the main active species. Eventually a possible direct Z-scheme mechanism was proposed to explain enhanced performance. This work may provide a new perspective for the rational design of excellent Bi 2 MoO 6 -based Z-scheme heterojunctions for environmental remediation.

The present work demonstrates the synthesis of the microsphere composite photocatalyst Bi 3 O 4 Br/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (BOB/NMILT) system, and the physicochemical properties of the material were analyzed by various characterization means. Further, the photocatalytic performance of the BOB/NMILT system was evaluated by degrading tetracycline (TC) under simulated sunlight. The degradation rate of TC using BOB/NMILT-5 reached 88.5% within 90 min. The degradation rate is 6.5 times and 3 times higher than that of individual catalysts NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (NMILT) and Bi 3 O 4 Br, respectively. The improvement in photocatalytic activity of composites mainly benefited from the construction of heterojunctions , which effectively inhibited the recombination of carriers. Importantly, the role of h + and •O 2 − was found to be significant in the reaction of TC. Cumulatively, a Z-scheme photocatalytic degradation mechanism of tetracycline on the BOB/NMILT composite system was proposed. The proposal of this system is of great significance for the future development of photocatalytic materials that can degrade tetracycline.

The widespread application of dyes and heavy metals causes increasing environmental pollution. One effective way to mitigate environmental pollution is to use semiconductor photocatalysts for redox purification of pollutants. Heterostructured photocatalysts can reduce the electron–hole recombination rate and improve light utilization. In this work, a novel SnO2/In3–xS4 composite with oxygen vacancy defect-mediated Z-scheme heterostructure is constructed for the first time by a one-pot method, in which SnO2 ultrasmall nanocrystals are decorated on nanopetals of flower-like In3–xS4. Material analyses show that the as-built three-dimensional hierarchical architecture is able to essentially increase the specific surface area and thus the active sites of the products. More importantly, the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction between the oxygen vacancy-induced SnO2 defect level and the In3–xS4 band structure not only promotes the separation of photogenerated charges but also makes them more reactive. Through the optimization of the composition ratio between the two phases, the visible-light-driven photocatalytic reaction rates of rhodamine B degradation and Cr(VI) reduction for the developed SnO2/In3–xS4 composite photocatalyst are 12.8 and 6.3 times of bare In3–xS4 and 32.0 and 76.0 times of bare SnO2, respectively. This work should provide a promising implication for designing new high-performance composite photocatalysts.

In the present research, ZnS/WO 3 composites were prepared by coprecipitation method to construct the Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with high efficiency electron separation for the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI). Compared with WO 3 and ZnS, the visible light absorption, photoreduction ability and photocatalytic activity of ZnS/WO 3 composites were improved. The ZnS/WO 3 composites show higher photoreduction U(VI) performance under visible light irradiation with the maximum extraction capacity of U(VI) at 1.52 g g −1 . The ZnS/WO 3 composites exhibit high uranium reduction ability under natural light with removal efficiency reaching 93.4 %. In-situ monitoring experiments and DFT calculations were designed to explore the mechanism and pathway of photoelectron transfer in the reduction process from U(VI) to U(IV). The results show that ZnS/WO 3 has an internal electric field to form a Z-scheme electron transfer , and uranium reduction is a dual-electron transfer pathway. In addition, the band gap regulation mechanism of binary composite semiconductor materials is deeply discussed.

Photocatalysis technology is considered an effective way to solve the problem of water pollution and energy shortage, and is hinged on the development of the photocatalyst . In this study, p-type semiconductor AgFeO 2 and the n-type photocatalyst Ag 3 VO 4 formed a p-n junction via a simple hydrothermal method . Compared with pure Ag 3 VO 4 , the 4 % AgFeO 2 -modified Ag 3 VO 4 photocatalyst (AgVFe-4) exhibited the best photocatalytic activity: the photodegradation rate of RhB reached 95.1 % within 60 min and possessed good photostability under UV–visible light irradiation. The physical and chemical properties of AgVFe-4 indicated that the composite structure showed a larger special surface area, much lower intensity of photoluminescence , and higher photogenerated carriers separation efficiency. The p-type AgFeO 2 and n-type Ag 3 VO 4 could form the p-n junction structure. Based on the analysis of reactive agents, the h + , •O 2 − and •OH were the main active species during organic pollutions photodegradation, and the photocatalysis process followed the Z-scheme mechanism. Meanwhile, some silver element in the photocatalyst was reduced into Ag 0 , which could act as the recombination center of the photogenerated carriers, further improving the photocatalytic performance. This work may arouse an increasing interest in designing more Z-scheme silver-based p-n junction heterojunction photocatalysts.

Because of the unique advantages, ultrasound (US) has become a popular technology for water organic treatment. In order to compensate for the disadvantages of expensive equipment and large energy input caused by US, researchers combine US with iron-based sono-catalyst to realize the rapid and efficient degradation of pollutants. Aiming at the ultrasonic hot spot and sonoluminescence effect, in this work, Z-type heterojunction sono-catalyst Fe II -MIL-88B/GO/P25 (Fe II -MGP) was synthesized for TC-HCl removal. The physicochemical properties of the material were characterized by SEM, XRD , XPS and BET. The addition of GO contributed to the formation of the Z-Scheme heterojunction. At the optimal reaction conditions determined by influential factor experiments (ultrasonic power of 100 W, sono-catalyst dose of 0.3 g/L, H 2 O 2 dose of 20 mM and pH 5), in only 7 min, 83.3 % of TC-HCl was removed, and the TOC degradation efficiency reached 52.2 %. The contrast experiment demonstrated that the US/Fe II -MGP/H 2 O 2 system had the best pollutant removal performance. After three repeated experiments, the removal efficiency decreased by only 6 %. ∙OH was identified as the major radical from the quenching experiments and technical EPR. UV–vis and Mott-Schottky measurements suggested that the possible carrier transfer paths followed the Z-Scheme heterojunction model.

How to achieve high-speed directional migration and separation of photogenerated carriers at heterointerfaces is still an important factor restricting efficient photocatalytic reactions. Herein, hierarchical columnar ZnIn 2 S 4 /BiVO 4 (ZIS/BVO) Z-scheme composite with photogenerated carriers highway in heterogeneous interface are designed by an in situ technique. Ultrathin ZIS nanosheets are uniformly grown upright on the surface of mulberry-like BVO pillars. The confined built-in electric field and Z-scheme heterojunction in ZIS/BVO are verified in detailed by synchronous illumination X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, theoretical calculation, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, and high-resolution TEM. The photogenerated electrons in the conduction band (CB) of BVO migrate to the valence band (VB) of ZIS through heterojunction, whereas holes in the VB of BVO and electrons in the CB of ZIS maintain the original high redox capability. These holes and electrons with high redox capability react with H 2 O and O 2 to generate more OH and O 2 − , respectively, achieving enhanced photocatalytic mineralization antibiotic properties. The mineralization rate of antibiotics in the optimized ZIS/BVO material are 4.4 and 1.8 times higher than that of pure BVO and ZIS, respectively.

Semiconductor photocatalysis can be regarded as one of effective strategies to overcome the great challenges encountered with conventional technologies for environmental remediation. In this research, Z-scheme heterostructure composed of core–shell Au@TiO 2 nanoparticles and flower-like Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets has been successfully prepared through the reverse micelle sol–gel method followed by a hydrothermal process. The structural characteristics, chemical compositions and photoelectrochemical properties of this ternary composite photocatalyst (Au@TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 ) were further investigated in detail. Benefitted from the synergy of the heterojunction construction and metallic surface plasmon resonance effect, the Au@TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 with an optimal mass ratio of Au@TiO 2 to Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of antibiotics under visible-light irradiation, in which the degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) could be up to 96.9% and 95.0% within 75 min, respectively. The reaction rate constant for SMX and TC degradation was calculated to be around 0.0425 min −1 and 0.0314 min −1 , which has 7.2 times and 1.9 times enhancement compared with single Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. In addition, the cyclic stability and photocatalytic mechanism of Au@TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 were further verified. Our primary results provide a feasible strategy to develop core–shell heterostructured photocatalysts with superior performance for the efficient removal of low-concentration antibiotics in water.

The development of efficient and stable photocatalysts to solve environmental issues is essential and remains a big challenge. In this work, flower-like CoNiFe-LDH is deposited in situ on g-C3N4 nanosheets, successfully constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction CoNiFe-LDH/g-C3N4 photocatalyst for the photoreduction of CO2 and photodegradation of MB dye. The synthesized nanohybrid shows superior photocatalytic CO2 performance (42.04 μmol g−1 h−1) and fast photodegradation MB performance (0.1057 min−1). The improved photocatalytic performance was attributed to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction with matched energy bands, and the intimate heterojunction contact interface, which significantly enhanced the interfacial charge transfer rate and improved the separation efficiency of electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on PL, photocurrent responses, EIS, and EPR experiments. This work can shed light on further application for environmental problems of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Construction of heterostructure is an efficient approach to improve the photocatalytic performance of catalysts. Herein, the Bi 6 Fe 1.5 Co 0.5 Ti 3 O 18 (BFCTO) nanoplates are successfully loaded on g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets by a facile chemical process for the first time. The photocatalytic activity of all g-C 3 N 4 /BFCTO catalysts are measured by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. The results display that g-C 3 N 4 /BFCTO heterojunctions exhibit greatly improved photocatalytic activity compared with corresponding bare g-C 3 N 4 and BFCTO catalysts. Based on the experimental results of photocurrent responses, EIS and ESR, it is clearly demonstrated that the improved activity is attributed to the formation of Z-scheme photocatalyst. The g-C 3 N 4 /BFCTO-2 heterojunction showed the optimal photocatalytic activity with the photodegradation efficiency of 84.9% within 20 min. We hope that the work can provide a new insight for exploring Bi n +1 Fe n −3 Ti 3 O 3 n +3 -based Z-scheme heterojunction for pollutant degradation and environment restoration.
