Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which incorporate porous particles into polymer matrix, were a promising approach to overcome the inherent trade-off effect of polymeric membranes. Controllable and easily scalable membrane fabrication strategies remained a challenge for the development of defect-free pervaporation MMMs. In this work, to avoid defects formed by particle exposure in MMMs, forced surface segregation of ZIF-8 on a substrate was achieved by vapor-assisted non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Subsequently, ZIF-8 ‘islands’ on the substrate surface were sealed with PVA solution and defect-free dense MMMs were successfully prepared. The surface segregation of ZIF-8 was proved by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The prepared MMMs showed an increase in flux of 162% and an increase in separation factor of 299% compared to the pristine membranes. It was expected that this strategy of inducing particles to undergo forced surface segregation could be extended to the preparation of other membranes.

In this study, ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized using a simple method at room temperature. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles were then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) specific surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and zeta potential . Subsequent batch adsorption experiments evaluated the adsorption performance of ZIF-8 on tetracycline , examining key pa-rameters like reaction time, pH, temperature, and adsorbent dosage. The results revealed a removal rate for TC of up to 90.59%. The adsorption data aligned with the Sips model, showcasing a maximum adsorption capacity of 359.61 mg/g at 303K. Further, the adsorption kinetics adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 90 mg/g at 303K. The considerable specific surface area of ZIF-8, standing at 1674.169 m 2 /g, likely enhances the adsorption efficacy. Analysis using XRD and FTIR confirmed the adsorption of TC on the ma-terial's surface. Overall, the predominant driving forces behind the adsorption process were identified as electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking interactions.

Porous carbon materials derived from ZIF-8 have attracted extensive research attention on account of their large surface area, tunable mesoporosity and abundant nitrogen content. However, directly carbonized ZIF-8 usually suffers from a low electronic conductivity, poor wettability and relatively low mesoporosity, which severely restricts their capacitive performance. Herein, P-doped modified carbon materials derived from ZIF-8 (ZPCs) were synthesized by using nontoxic phytic acid as a phosphorus source, followed by carbonization at high temperature. Benefiting from its relatively high specific surface area of 911.7 m2g−1and higher ratio of mesopores, as well as N, O and P doping, ZPC-1000 delivers the largest specific capacity, up to 219.4 F g−1at 1 A g−1, among the prepared samples and an outstanding cycle span, retaining 100% capacity after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1. In this work, we highlight the strategy of constructing a synergistic effect between high mesoporosity and heteroatom doping, which can greatly boost the capacitive performance of carbon materials. Keywords:P doping;ZIF-8;porous carbon;capacitive performance

Enzymes immobilized in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great attention as a promising hybrid material. In the study, a novel biomimetic mineralization encapsulation process for a highly stable and easily reusable catalase (CAT)@ZIF-8 composite has been designed. This immobilization process provides a high enzyme loading of 70 wt %. The CAT@ZIF-8 composites exhibited a much lower K m value and better enzyme activity than those of free CAT, exhibiting good stability against enzymatic hydrolysis and protein denaturation under harsh conditions. The inhibitory effects of pesticides such as pH, temperature, solvent (i.e., methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide and tetrahydrofuran) and storage at room temperature (6 months) on the activity of free and immobilized catalase enzyme were investigated. The CAT@MOF composites also exhibited excellent reusability, an obvious advantage for treating a wastewater from food processing. The CAT@MOF developed is promising for the efficient removal of H 2 O 2 under harsh conditions.

Efficient removal of antibiotics from aqueous solution is of fundamental importance due to the increasingly severe antibiotic-related pollution. Herein, a high-performance Fe-ZIF-8-500 adsorbent was synthesized by Fe-doping strategy and subsequent activation with high-temperature. In order to evaluate the feasibility of Fe-ZIF-8-500 as an adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) removal, the adsorption properties of Fe-ZIF-8-500 were systematically explored. The results showed that the Fe-ZIF-8-500 exhibited ultrahigh adsorption capacity for TC with a record-high value of 867 mg g -1 . Additionally, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms for TC onto the Fe-ZIF-8-500 can be well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Freundlich model, respectively. The ultrahigh adsorption capacity of Fe-ZIF-8-500 can be explained by the synergistic effect of multi-affinities, i.e., surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding. After being used for four cycles the adsorption capacity of Fe-ZIF-8-500 remains a high level, demonstrating its outstanding reusability. The ultrahigh adsorption capacity, excellent reusability, satisfactory water stability and easy-preparation nature of Fe-ZIF-8-500 highlight its bright prospect for removing tetracycline pollutant from wastewater.

The practical application of ZIF-8 crystals is commonly limited by their powder form. In this work, natural balsa wood sheets were employed as substrate for dispersing and shaping ZIF-8 particles. By in situ growth method, ZIF-8 layer was coated on the aligned wood channels to construct ZIF-8/wood composites with a hierarchical structure. A good affinity and interfacial compatibility between ZIF-8 and wood lumens was observed. The wood channels enable high-speed water transport and the ZIF-8/wood composites were integrated into filtration systems for continuous wastewater treatment. At a 7.9 wt% ZIF-8 loading, the three-layered ZIF-8/wood filter (ZW-2) presented an effective treatable volume of 800 mL of 10 mg L −1 Cu 2+ solution. Moreover, ZW-2 exhibited an excellent recyclability and reusability. Such wood-based composite is renewable, low cost, and holds great potential for practical environmental remediation.

Natural active polysaccharides are attracting increased attention from pharmaceutical industries for their valuable biological activities. However, the application of polysaccharides has been restricted due to their relatively large molecular weight, complex structure, and instability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged to help deliver cargo to specific locations, achieving the objectives of eliminating the potential damage to the body, protecting the drugs, and improving therapeutic effectiveness. Here, a pH-responsive zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) was synthesized to encapsulated three sulfated polysaccharides (heparin, fucan sulfate, fucosylated chondroitin sulfate) and a non-sulfated polysaccharide, hyaluronic acid. The resulting [email protected] biocomposites showed differences in terms of morphology, particle size, encapsulation, and release efficiency. These biocomposites retained antithrombotic activity and the framework ZIF-8 effectively protected these polysaccharides from degradation and prolonged shelf-life of the anticoagulants from the unfavorable environment.

Electrochemical deposition is a facile technique to fabricate metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based materials in a short reaction time under mild conditions. In this work, novel necklace-like zeolitic imidazole framework@multiwalled carbon nanotubes (ZIF-8@MWCNTs) composite was synthesized by electrochemical method for the first time and then used as precursor for subsequent carbonization and acid treatment. The resultant porous carbon material (C-ZIF-8@MWCNTs) maintained the necklace-like structure with a high surface area of 1063.2 m 2 g −1 . When used as electrode material for supercapacitor , the C-ZIF-8@MWCNTs demonstrated a high specific capacitance of 259.2 F g −1 at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 . Further, the capacitance retention could reach 92% after 5000 cycles under the current density of 15 A g −1 . Due to the large specific surface area of the porous carbon derived from ZIF-8 and the intrinsic high conductivity, the C-ZIF-8@MWCNTs displayed good rate ability and cycle performance. The current work can expand the method to synthesize functional MOFs-based materials for advanced applications.

As one of the most essential semiconductors, ZnO has been widely used for solar cells, photocatalysis, environmental remediation, etc. Doping and morphology control of ZnO can significantly improve the efficiency of its photocatalytic performance. Tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) is widely used in medical and veterinary fields. Its excess use harms the environment and human health. Herein, we have successfully prepared Cu2O-doped ZnO with a porous structure by calcination using ZIF-8 as the precursor. After exposure to visible light (λ >420 nm) for 75 min, these photocatalysts exhibited a reasonable TC degradation rate (∼83.6%). Compared with ZnO, the Cu2O-doped ZnO introduces a p–n heterojunction and increases oxygen vacancies, which reduces the band gap and electron–hole recombination. Therefore, the photocatalytic efficiency for TC and PEC performance have been improved.

A zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) derivative was synthesized and developed as the corrosion inhibitor of copper in 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution, and its inhibition performance was investigated by electrochemical measurement and surface analysis . Results show that the ZIF-8 derivative could effectively inhibit copper from corrosion, and the inhibition efficiency was 87.2% at an optimal ZIF-8 derivative concentration of 45 mg/L. The corrosion inhibition mechanism of the ZIF-8 derivative could be explained as follows: the amino functional groups and the π-system formed by aromatic rings of the ZIF-8 derivative were tightly adsorbed on the copper substrates, which systematically formed a hydrophobic film, thereby effectively inhibiting the corrosion caused by aggressive ions.

The preparation of highly active and stable catalysts for syngas conversion is a major challenge for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Herein, we report a strategy to prepare a highly dispersed Co-embedded porous carbon nanocage (CoPCN) structure derived from a core–shell metal–organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursor. High Co loading (over wt 30%) is achieved while maintaining an optimal dispersion and particle size of the active Co phase when a ZIF-8@ZIF-67 is pyrolyzed at 920 °C. Besides, the porous channels and hollow structures of the CoPCN strengthen the diffusion of reactants and the hydrocarbon product, enhancing the C5+ selectivity and CO conversion. The CoPCN shows high stability in FTS with a CO conversion of 18.3%, 80.2% selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons (C5+), and 8.9% selectivity for short-chain hydrocarbons (C2–C4) after 100 h time on stream. Compared with other MOF-derived FTS catalysts, CoPCN-920 can achieve higher C5+ selectivity at a lower reaction temperature. The present work uncovers the relationship between the porous structure and catalytic performance, providing an efficient method to prepare promising materials for enhanced FTS stability, activity, and selectivity.

Deeply understanding the structure and electrical properties of ZIF-8 is very important due to many practical applications of porous materials . We present the crystal structure and microstructure details of ZIF-8 prepared in three different solvents. The solvents play an important role on grain growth of ZIF-8, furthermore, a small fraction of monoclinic phase can be found in the ZIF-8s prepared in water or in amonium hydroxide. Radio-frequency dielectric and impedance spectra studies of dynamic dielectric response of ZIF-8s indicate two additional dielectric relaxation processes associated with the introduced water molecules in as-prepared samples. The dielectric response can be described by the combination of the dc conductivity, the universal dielectric response, the Cole-Cole relation and intrinsic response. The results exhibit the solvents make an important influence on the electrical properties due to different contents water in ZIF-8s. Our results will pave a way to modify the dielectric property of ZIF-based dielectrics in radio-frequency applications.
