This study successfully fabricated a WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (WO 3 /ZIS) composite photocatalyst via electrostatic self-assembly under acidic conditions (pH = 4.1). The effect of composite ratio on the material's structure and optoelectronic properties was systematically investigated using multiple characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. Photocatalytic mechanism studies were conducted using fluvastatin as a model pharmaceutical pollutant. Results confirm the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction in the WO 3 /ZIS composite. Increasing the proportion of ZnIn 2 S 4 during electrostatic self-assembly effectively enlarges the specific surface area, enhances visible-light absorption, and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated e − -h + pairs, thereby significantly improving photocatalytic performance. The WO 3 /ZIS-30 % composite material exhibited the most stable structure, the largest specific surface area, and the optimal light absorption capacity and charge carrier separation efficiency. Its degradation efficiency for fluvastatin reached 59.81 %, representing a 25.88 % improvement over WO 3 . Radical trapping experiments verify the simultaneous generation of ·OH and ·O 2 − radicals, and the concentrations of ·O 2 − and ·OH were 1.68 × 10 −5 mol/L and 1.61 × 10 −5 mol/Land their synergistic action considerably strengthens the oxidative power of the system. The Z-scheme heterojunction formed by electrostatic self-assembly facilitates spatial separation of photo generated charges and enables multi-radical oxidation, collectively boosting photocatalytic efficiency. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts suited for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water.

Photocatalytic upcycling of polylactic acid (PLA) via a two-step process-hydrothermal depolymerization to a lactic acid (LA)-rich hydrolysate followed by selective photocatalytic oxidation to form value-added chemicals-presents a sustainable pathway for plastic waste upgrading. However, the efficient activation of LA molecules and effective generation of key intermediates remain significant challenges. Herein, Pd nanoparticle-modified ZnIn 2 S 4 (Pd-ZIS) nanosheets were developed to promote selective conversion of PLA hydrolysate to acetic acid (AA). In situ FTIR spectral analysis indicates that Pd nanoparticles promote electron transfer and O 2 dissociation, accelerating the generation of hydroxyl radicals via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). Furthermore, in situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results reveal that Pd nanoparticles effectively activate the C α ─C COOH bond in LA molecules, promoting the formation of acetyl radical intermediates that subsequently couple with hydroxyl radicals to yield AA. Consequently, the optimized 0.5 wt% Pd-ZIS catalyst exhibits superior performance, achieving an AA production rate of 4.2 mmol g −1 h −1 with a selectivity of 88.7% and an apparent quantum yield of 1.31% ( λ = 380 nm). These performance metrics surpass those reported in most previous studies. This work offers novel insights into catalyst design for waste plastic upcycling, deepening the understanding of the mechanisms to effectively regulate the underlying complex reaction pathways.

ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 hybrid exhibits selective RhB photooxidation and electrocatalytic HER. • pH = 2 ZnIn 2 S 4 could thoroughly photobleached RhB via complete mineralization. • S-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 yielded Rh-110 intermediates via N-de-ethylation. • Strong interfacial interaction of heterojunction reduced ΔG H* and ΔG H2O* . RhB molecules could be selectively photodegraded over bare ZnIn 2 S 4 (advanced oxidation) and ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunctions (Rh-110 intermediates via N-de-ethylation). Adequate band structure, interface electric field and S-scheme charge transfer pathway generated more • O 2 – radicals with strong reducibility. Thus, the best R = 1:1 ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 one showed ∼ 93.4% of removal efficiency toward RhB within ∼ 20 min of visible light irradiation, and RhB completely transformed into Rh-110 after 5 min of irradiation. Strong interfacial interaction between ZnIn 2 S 4 and WS 2 allowed R = 1:1 ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 electrode with the smallest Tafel slope of ∼ 78.06 mV dec -1 and charge transfer resistance in alkaline KOH electrolyte, which thus enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and cycling durability of ZnIn 2 S 4 . The first-principle calculations demonstrated that the ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunction exerts a desirable H* adsorption–desorption kinetic. ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunction possesses superior dual functionality of selective photooxidation toward RhB and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, which is responsible for the S-scheme charge transfer and strong interfacial interaction. The first-principle calculations demonstrated its desirable H* adsorption–desorption kinetic. Download: Download high-res image (150KB) Download: Download full-size image

The development of efficient photocatalysts for solar-driven H 2 evolution relies on precise charge management. A novel ternary heterojunction photocatalyst, 1%Co@ZnIn 2 S 4 /UiO-66 (1%Co@ZU), was synthesized through a collaborative sequential self-assembly and photodeposition strategy. In photocatalytic water splitting for H 2 evolution, 1%Co@ZU achieved a H 2 evolution rate of 46.40 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , with apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 86.32% at 420 nm. An S-scheme heterojunction between UiO-66 (UiO) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) promoted efficient charge separation. Co S bonds directed the rapid transfer of electrons from ZIS to Co. Electrons were enriched on Co sites, and the energy barrier was reduced quickly. The optimal free energy of H* adsorption (ΔG H⁎ ) was 0.14 eV. This study demonstrates the crucial role of band alignment and interface design in high-performance photocatalytic systems for application in H 2 evolution and other energy conversion fields. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) H 2 S splitting offers a dual-functional strategy for sustainable hydrogen sulfide valorization and atmospheric remediation, but it is still hindered by sluggish charge dynamics and poor stability. Here, we pioneer a hierarchical ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP photoanode that synergistically integrates heterojunction engineering and surface cocatalyst modification to address these challenges. The enhanced photoinduced carrier separation is accomplished by ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 through accelerated charge transfer kinetics with role of built-in electric field and hybrid energy bands. Corresponding sulfur oxidization photocurrent density of 2.24 mA/cm 2 is achieved that is 8.30 folds higher than that of pristine ZnFe 2 O 4 . Subsequent modification with NiCoP nanoparticles further optimizes the surface electronic states, which include increased DOS and decreased R ct,trap , leading to accelerated charge injection dynamics and suppressed carrier recombination at the surface. Meanwhile, PEC stability of the heterojunction is increased to 77 % from 62 % stemmed from desulphurization role of NiCoP protective layer, that is extremely higher than 44 % of ZnFe 2 O 4 . The prime PEC sulfur oxidization reaction kinetics are displayed by ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP with charge transfer efficiency improved to 22.70 % from 2.45 %. Hence, sulfur oxidization photocurrent density of ZnFe 2 O 4 is enhanced to 3.44 mA/cm 2 from 0.27 mA/cm 2 with light absorption edge of 558 nm. This work not only demonstrates the highest reported PEC H 2 S splitting performance but also provides a universal design framework-combining bandgap engineering with surface state modulation—for developing robust photoelectrodes in toxic gas valorization systems.

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is of great practical significance to degrade persistent organic pollutants (POPs). However, it still faces challenges and always in pursuit to construct a photocatalyst system with efficient charge separation and strong redox capacity. Herein, a Z-scheme energy band configuration in a hierarchical heterostructure composed of two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) ZnO nanoparticles was fabricated for the degradation of tetracycline (TC)—one of the typical POPs. On the one hand, the Z-scheme heterojunction inhibits the recombination of charge carriers and preserves the strong redox capacity of ZnIn2S4 and ZnO. On the other hand, the hierarchical microstructure and the 2D/0D subunits endow the ZnIn2S4/ZnO photocatalyst with good light harvesting, intimate interface contact, and short charge transfer. As a result, the hybrid photocatalyst exhibited a high reaction rate constant of 0.074 min−1 for TC degradation, which is 5.4 and 2.8 times that of the pure ZnIn2S4 and ZnO, respectively. This work provides new insight into the integration of energy band engineering and morphology modulation to design advanced photocatalytic systems for POP treatment.

Ultrathin (ut) two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) nanosheets have exhibited great potential in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, ultrathin 2D/2D MoS2/ZnIn2S4 (ut-MoS2/ZIS) were designed and prepared via two steps of the in situ hydro/solvothermal method. Benefiting from the ultrathin structure and the large and intimate contact between ut-ZIS and MoS2, the charge transfer was increased and the recombination of photogenerated carriers was suppressed. It is also noteworthy that 4 wt % ut-MoS2/ZIS gave the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 221.71 μmol h–1under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), and the apparent quantum yield was measured to be 11.8% at 420 nm. Meanwhile, ut-MoS2/ZIS showed high stability after 16 h of irradiation. PL, TRPL spectrum, and photoelectrochemical measurement demonstrated that MoS2 cocatalyst playeds a vitally important role in the separation of charge carriers and proton reduction reaction. This work is expected to inspire the design and development of highly efficient ultrathin photocatalysts.

Due to the intrinsic chemically inert CO2 with the dissociation energy of C═O bond as high as 750 kJ mol–1, low efficiency and selectivity have become the most significant restraints for the practical application of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Renewing the electronic structure of adsorbed CO2 on the catalyst surface through a rational catalyst design is crucial to achieving performance improvement. Herein, we prepared ZnIn2S4 and Cu-substituted ZnIn2S4 containing both Lewis acid and Lewis base sites as a model system for investigating the activation of CO2 by M–S chemical bonds (M represents a metal site). The Cu–S chemical bond can effectively activate CO2 as a vital electron channel and lower the Gibbs free energy for generating the essential intermediate *COOH. Besides, the Cu0.7-ZnIn2S4 sample displays 74.8% selectivity for reducing CO2 to CO with a rate of 47.2 μmol g–1 h–1, roughly 7.14 times that of ZnIn2S4.

Exploitation of atomic-level principles to optimize the charge transfer on ultrathin 2D heterostructures is an emerging frontier in relieving the energy and environmental crisis. Herein, a facile “topological-atom-extraction” protocol is disclosed, i.e., selective extraction of Zn from ultrathin half-unit-cell ZnIn 2 S 4 (HZIS) can embed thin In 2 O 3 domain into 1.60 nm thick HZIS layer to create an atomically thin in-plane In 2 O 3 /HZIS heterostructure. Thanks to the optimal distance and capability of charge separation, the in-plane In 2 O 3 /HZIS heterostructure is among the best ZnIn 2 S 4 -based CO 2 reduction reaction (CRR) photocatalysts, and indeed demonstrates a significant increase (from 6.8- to 128-fold) in CO production rate compared with those of out-plane ZIS@In 2 O 3 and out-plane In 2 O 3 -HZIS calcined heterostructures. Density Functional Theory simulation reveals that whereas the out-plane heterostructure has a much smaller ∆q of 0.2–0.25 e, the in-plane heterostructure with “zero distance contact” has an optimal ∆q of 1.05 e between In 2 O 3 and HZIS that induces remarkable charge redistribution on the in-plane heterojunction interface and creates local electric field confined within the ultrathin layer. The charge redistribution efficiently directs the charge-carrier separation in S-scheme photocatalytic system and endows long-lifetime carrier to CRR active HZIS. The findings demonstrate the strong versatility of engineering atomic-level heterojunctions for efficient catalysts design.

In this paper, a novel Au/g-C 3 N 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 plasma photocatalyst heterojunction composite with 3D hierarchical microarchitecture has been successfully constructed by integrating Au/g-C 3 N 4 plasmonic photocatalyst composite with 3D ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet through a simple hydrothermal process. The Au nanoparticles were firstly anchored on the surface of pristine g-C 3 N 4 material to get Au/g-C 3 N 4 plasmonic photocatalyst. Ascribing to the surface plasmon resonance of Au nanoparticles , the obtained Au/g-C 3 N 4 plasmonic photocatalyst shows a significant improved photocatalytic activity toward hydrogen production from water with visible light response comparing with pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Further combining Au/g-C 3 N 4 plasmonic photocatalyst with 3D ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet to construct a heterojunction composite. Owing to the synergistic effect of the surface plasmon resonance of Au nanoparticles in Au/g-C 3 N 4 and the heterojunction structure in the interface of Au/g-C 3 N 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , the prepared Au/g-C 3 N 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 plasma photocatalyst heterojunction composite shows an excellent photocatalytic activity toward hydrogen production from water with visible light response, which is around 7.0 and 6.3 times higher than that of the pristine C 3 N 4 and Znln 2 S 4 nanosheet, respectively. The present work might provide some insights for exploring other efficient heterojunction photocatalysts with excellent properties.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a significant green oxidant for environment and new energy, especially for Fenton-like system. Onsite production and sustainable consumption of H 2 O 2 are the two critical challenges. Here, a fantastic 2D/1D hierarchical layered ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 heterojunction is reported as an efficient catalyst for in- situ H 2 O 2 production via 2-electrons oxygen reduction (ORR) process and be rapidly activated to high concentration hydroxyl radical (•OH) for water purification under visible light irradiation. The high-quality catalyst enables superior H 2 O 2 production rate of 1530.59 μmol h −1 g −1 with an external quantum efficiency of 10.39% illuminated at 400 nm, is much higher than that of reported photocatalysts. The bimetallic sulfide ZnIn 2 S 4 can effectively promote the activation of H 2 O 2 due to the unsaturation of sulfur atoms, so that the wastewater containing tetracycline (50 ppm) can be degraded by 90% only within 60 min by ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 via this cascade reaction. This work provides a novel strategy and ZnIn 2 S 4 -based catalyst for photocatalytic Fenton-like reaction.

The directional synthesis of transition metal phosphides was considered to be an effective strategy to solve the overdependence of noble metals on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) reactions. Inspiringly, this work reported a facile method for constructing hollow Co 2 P nanocages (Co 2 P NCGs) that derived from ZIF-67 by calcining and phosphiding procedure in nitrogen atmosphere to act as non-noble metal cocatalysts. Followed with further coating thin-layered ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) on the surface of Co 2 P NCGs through a hydrothermal reaction , the hierarchical robust Co 2 P/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanocages (Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs) were then delicately fabricated as efficient photocatalysts for PHE reactions. The uniquely hollow structure of Co 2 P NCGs largely diffused the photogenerated chargers that induced from ZIS and the closely interfacial contact significantly promoted the separation and transfer of electrons from ZIS to Co 2 P according to density functional theory (DFT) calculation, synergistically resulting in an efficient hydrogen generation performance. PHE results showed that an efficient H 2 evolution rate of 7.93 mmol/g/h over 10% Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs was achieved, about 10 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . More importantly, the hierarchically hollow Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs exhibited ascendant PHE activity in comparison with that of 1% noble metal (Pt, Au, Ag) loaded ZnIn 2 S 4 with superior sustainability, all indicating the efficient and stable photocatalysts of Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs for PHE reactions.
