Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized by solution chemistry method with n-hexanol as solvent. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope and X-ray powder diffraction, and the growth kinetics was studied by Lifshitz, Slyozov and Wagner model. The effects of temperature, the addition of deionized water and the concentration of zinc acetate dihydrate on the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles were investigated. The results show that the nucleation and growth of ZnO nanoparticles were promoted by the addition of small amount of water, and the size of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles could be controlled by changing the amount of water addition and the concentration of zinc acetate dihydrate.

ZnO semiconductors have been widely used as photocatalysts. However, the weak photodegradation under solar light restrains their further application. In this study, porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which has a high specific surface, was combined with ZnO nanorods to fabricate ZnO@ZIF-8 core–shell heterostructures, with the ZnO nanorods and ZIF-8 as the core and the shell, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed that the ZnO nanorods were wrapped by a ZIF-8 shell. The pore size distribution of these ZnO@ZIF-8 nanocomposites included micropores, mesopores, and macropores. Moreover, a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis showed an increase compared with the ZnO nanorods in the overall specific surface area. Due to a synergistic effect of ZnO and ZIF-8, the as-synthesized ZnO@ZIF-8 heterostructures exhibited high photocatalytic activity and completely degraded methylene blue in ∼4.5 min under solar light irradiation. Furthermore, stability experiments proved that the as-prepared ZnO@ZIF-8 nanocomposites retain over 95% of their photocatalytic activity after four cycles.

In this paper, high-yield graphene (GRZ) and visible light-driven photocatalyst graphene/ZnO (GR/ZnO) composite were efficiently prepared by combining ball-milling and liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) under mild conditions, in which ZnO-PVA (ZnO modified by polyvinyl alcohol) played a crucial intensification role. The addition of ZnO-PVA in ball-milling process could increase the yield of graphene from 16.7% to 32.9% compared with that without ZnO-PVA. High yield of graphene, obtaining GR/ZnO composite conveniently along with the ease of ZnO-PVA particles removal from graphene solution are the unique features of this approach. A series of characterizations such as UV–vis, SEM, TEM, EDS , XRD , Raman, XPS, EIS were carried out to explore the structure, morphology and characteristics of graphene and GR/ZnO composite, as well as the exfoliation mechanism of graphite and photocatalytic mechanism of GR/ZnO. Moreover, the as-prepared GR/ZnO showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity under simulated sunlight irradiation, in which 74.3% of methylene blue (MB) and 95.5% of Rhodamine B (RhB) was decomposed after 180 min. The relatively low-cost, simple and efficient preparation method of graphene and GR/ZnO composite is promising for large-scale application.

Nowadays, metal oxide-based electromagnetic wave absorbing materials have aroused widely attentions in the application of telecommunication and electronics due to their selectable mechanical and outstanding dielectric properties. Herein, the binary ZnO/NiCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal reaction and the electromagnetic wave absorption properties of the composites were investigated in detail. As a result, benefiting from the dielectric loss, the as-obtained ZnO/NiCo 2 O 4 -7 samples possessed a minimum reflection loss value of −33.49 dB at 18.0 GHz with the thickness of 4.99 mm. This work indicates that ZnO/NiCo 2 O 4 composites have the promising candidate applications in electromagnetic wave absorption materials in the future.

Three different ZnO nanostructures (nanorods/flowers/spheres) were prepared through facile hydrothermal method or water bath, whose sensing properties to NO 2 were investigated in detail at room temperature activated by UV light (365 nm LED). The sensing results showed that ZnO nanospheres exhibit the highest response of 29.4–5 ppm NO 2 , which can be attributed to their biggest specific surface area and the most amount of adsorbed oxygen species on the surface. In contrast, ZnO nanorods show the fastest response and recovery speed (9 and 18 s to 5 ppm NO 2 , respectively) due to their highest crystallinity, least surface defects and unidirectional electron transfer path, which is much faster than most reported literatures. With regard to the ZnO nanoflowers, both the gas-sensing response and the response and recovery speed are between ZnO nanorods and ZnO nanospheres. Furthermore, the stability, selectivity, and the moisture resistance of three different ZnO nanostructures were also researched.

In this paper, a ZnO array is first prepared on the conductive glass by hydrothermal method, and then a seed layer of CuO nanoparticles is deposited on the surface of ZnO nanorods to form a core–shell ZnO/CuO nanoarray. Following, the dendritic CuO nanorods are grown on ZnO nanorods by hydrothermal method, constructing a three-dimensional ZnO/CuO nano-heterogeneous hierarchical structure array and applied in photoelectrochemical cell. Our three-dimensional ZnO/CuO nano-heterogeneous hierarchical structure shows obvious absorption of visible light from 500 to 900 nm. The current–time curves reveal that the photocurrent is greatly enhanced after dendritic CuO grows on the ZnO nanorod array. Furthermore, the charge dynamics processes in the core–shell ZnO/CuO nano-heterostructure array and the three-dimensional ZnO/CuO nano-heterostructure array are studied by comparing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and intensity modulation photocurrent (photovoltage) spectroscopy. Although the photo-generated charge transfer rate in the ZnO/CuO core–shell structure is slightly faster than the three-dimensional ZnO/CuO hierarchical structure, the recombination life of the photo-generated charge is increased by nearly two orders of magnitude in the three-dimensional ZnO/CuO nano-heterostructure array. The three-dimensional ZnO/CuO nano-heterostructure array has a good potential application in the field of photoelectric conversion devices and photocatalysis.

The ZnO/Ag composite photocatalysts were prepared via the deposition of Ag on the surface of the grassy ZnO by a simple immersion reduction method. The dosage of Ag in the composites was adjusted by the concentration of Ag ions , immersion time and the content of the reducing agent. The grassy ZnO substrate presented a hexagonal wurtzite structure and a uniform dispersion. The band gap of the ZnO/Ag composites was decreased than that of grassy ZnO due to the surface plasma resonance (SPR) effect caused by Ag modification. The photocurrent response of the composites with proper amount of Ag loading was greatly improved by the SPR effect of Ag and subsequently enhanced light absorption, which resulted in the separation of electron-hole pairs in the near-surface region of the neighboring semiconductor. The ZnO/Ag composites had excellent photocatalytic efficiency in decolorization of RhB under UV irradiation.

Surface modification is a simple and effective means to promote the sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors. Marigold-shaped ZnO nanoflowers are fabricated via a simple precipitation reaction and subsequently catalytically modified with RuO2 on the surface through an ethylene glycol solvothermal treatment. The experimental results have proven that a very low content of Ru on the surface of ZnO exists in an oxidized state. However, the gas response of the sensor based on RuO2-modified ZnO is remarkably improved by 17 times to 100 ppm acetone with the decrease of optimal operating temperature from 219 °C–172 °C and reduction in recovery time from 79–52 s. The sensing enhancement mechanism of surface modification can be attributed to the formation of massive small heterostructure between p-type RuO2 ultrasmall nanoparticles and n-type ZnO as well as the catalytic effect of Ru4+ and a rougher surface.

The details of catechol interacting with the ZnO surfaces are critical for understanding how the organic chromophores anchor on and hence functionalize the ZnO materials. In this work, we apply low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the adsorption state and interface charge transfer of catechol on a ZnO(10-10) surface. For the molecules deposited at liquid nitrogen temperature, the fully-protonated (FP) status prevails in the isolated molecules despite the synergistic formation of half-protonated (HP) and fully-deprotonated (FD) ones. However, annealing to elevated temperature drives all the molecules to assemble into either linear or a c(2 × 2) superstructure composed of only FD catechols. Such spontaneous deprotonation of catechol is different from the predicted water-assisted process and plays critical roles in switching the catechol from electron acceptors to electron donors relative to the ZnO surface. These results may bring new insights into the design of optoelectronic and biomedical applications of the ZnO-organic compositional system.

In this study, a new process for preparing nanorod arrays was developed. The prepared nanorod array structure is innovative and the components of the prepared nanorod array can be replaced and expanded. The magnetron sputtering has been used to deposit the TiO 2 and ZnO seed layer, which could promote the growth of nanorod arrays and is conducive to the improvement of the array morphology and structure, thereby enhancing the photovoltaic properties of the materials. The TiO 2 /ZnO nanorod array heterojunction materials were prepared using a secondary hydrothermal method combined with magnetron sputtering. The microscopic morphology, crystal structure, absorption spectrum, reflection spectrum, and photoelectrochemical performance of the samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, UV–vis spectrophotometry, and electrochemical workstation, respectively. The experimental results show that the prepared TiO 2 /ZnO nanorod array heterojunctions exhibit a typical bilayer nanorod array structure with high crystallization; the TiO 2 /ZnO nanorod heterojunction array has a higher degradation efficiency with a 98% degradation rate of methylene blue (80 min), where there are only 84.5% and 89.6% of methylene blue degraded by the TiO 2 and ZnO nanorod arrays, respectively. The photoelectrochemical properties and photocatalytic ability of the TiO 2 /ZnO nanorod array heterojunctions are significantly superior to those of the single-component ZnO or TiO 2 nanorod arrays. SnO 2 /TiO 2 nanorod heterojunction arrays and SnO 2 /ZnO nanorod heterojunction arrays were also prepared using this process, indicating promising application prospects.

The p–n heterojunction nanocatalyst was successfully synthesized by decorating the surface of ZnO nanorods with CuO by using a low-temperature synthesis method. It was used as the driving force for the removal of tetracycline (TC) in water with mechanical stirring. Different ratios of ZnO/CuO piezoelectric nanocatalysts were examined. The nanoscale ZnO/CuO catalyst achieved a 98% removal rate of TC in water after 120 min. The main active species for TC degradation were identified as hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2–) by quenching experiments. The piezoelectric current generated by ZnO/CuO-1.5 was found to be 3.1 and 6.2 times higher than those of pure ZnO and CuO, respectively, due to the formation of a p–n heterojunction structure and built-in electric field situation. The facile and low-temperature synthesis process of the ZnO/CuO nanocatalyst with superior removal rates provides practical support for large-scale application in wastewater treatment.

Trimethylphenol is an organic toxic byproduct of industrial process, which is difficult to be eliminated through conventional degradation without harsh conditions. In this work, a sulfite-based oxidation process activated by ZnO-embedded hydrogel was studied for the degradation of 2,4,6-trimethylphenols in the ambient conditions. The ZnO/Na 2 SO 3 oxidative system can effectively degrade trimethylphenol via the generation of radicals such as \({\rm{S}}{{\rm{O}}_4}^{. - }\) , OH · , and \({\rm{S}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^{. - }\) . The presence of hydrogel matrix facilitates the distribution and recyclability of ZnO catalysts while maintaining high degradation kinetics and little leaching of metal ions. Results suggest the promising potential of ZnO-hydrogel in wastewater treatment with good performance in terms of pH sensitivity, anion interference, recyclability, etc. The combination of ZnO catalysts, hydrogel, and sulfite-based advanced oxidation process may provide essential support for the current treatment of alkylated phenols with strong potential in the commercial scale-ups.
