A multi-target and responsive nanoplatform (MM/ZnS/ATV) combining H2S and atorvastatin for enhanced atherosclerosis therapy

Yinhong Xie,Mengchen Chi,Ruichen Dong,Sui Wu,Jinming Yang,Qin Wang,Junying Chen,Yajun Weng

Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the arterial walls. The pathological process of atherosclerosis mainly contains lipid metabolism disorder, endothelial dysfunction, and progressive inflammation. Given the complexity of pathological process, treatments based on a single target might have very limited therapeutic efficacy. Thus, developing a nanoplatform to obtain an enhanced multi-target therapy is promising. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) has various functions including anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and endothelial protection. In this study, a responsive multi-target nanoplatform (MM/ZnS/ATV) combining the functions of H 2 S and atorvastatin was developed. The acidic microenvironment of the plaque can accelerate ZnS hydrolysis to trigger H 2 S and atorvastatin release. The responsive H 2 S release from ZnS can overcome the shortcomings of rapid H 2 S release from H 2 S donors in vivo. Furthermore, the ZnS hydrolysis-mediated H + consumption in the microenvironment can reduce acidity to some extent. Results showed macrophage membranes (MM) coating reduced the phagocytosis of nanoparticles and increased the bioavailability. In vitro studies demonstrated that H 2 S release from MM/ZnS/ATV inhibited ROS-induced endothelial cell apoptosis and repaired the damaged endothelium. Moreover, atorvastatin released from MM/ZnS/ATV regulated lipid metabolism and reduced the blood lipid content. Both in vitro and in vivo studies confirmed MM/ZnS/ATV exhibited excellent therapeutic efficacy. Specifically, in vivo results showed that H 2 S combined with atorvastatin effectively reduced inflammatory infiltration, and promoted plaque regression and stabilization. Our study provides a promising strategy for atherosclerosis therapy.

Synergizing photothermal and pyroelectric effects: Coal gangue assisted simultaneous ZnS/CuS for degradation of mineral processing wastewater

Meng Li,Weiji Sun,Wangkai Hui,Lang Liu

Photocatalytic oxidation technology is a green and low carbon approach for degradation of mineral processing wastewater, which is extensively applied to ecological environment restoration. In this research, coal gangue-ZnS/CuS pyroelectric/photothermal composite photocatalyst is constructed by high temperature calcination method. The temperature difference between heat converted from light energy absorbed by CuS and the circulating condensate water provides the impelling force for the pyroelectric effect. The porous structure of coal gangue acts as a “heat capacitor”, which furnishes greater temperature fluctuation for pyroelectric effect. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups on the surface of coal gangue can availably adsorb oxygen and facilely form superoxide radicals with electrons. The degradation efficiency of xanthate is as high as 99.5 % within 50 min. This research has significant implications for designing and developing highly efficient photocatalysts for the degradation of mining wastewater.

ZIF-8 derived ZnS/ZnO type-II heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production and norfloxacin degradation

Boyang Qin,Jiao Chen,Fan Xu,Jinxin Zou,Wenfang Wang,Yu Lv,Luyu Tian,Lan Zhou,Jun Feng

Developing efficient heterojunction structures is of critical importance for boosting solar energy conversion in photocatalysis. Herein, a ZnS-ZnO heterojunction is fabricated via pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) followed by in-situ sulfidation. Due to the formation of heterojunction, the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers can be efficiently enhanced. As a result, the as-fabricated ZnS-ZnO heterojunction exhibited a H 2 O 2 formation rate of 6.88 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ , which is 3.75-fold that of ZnO. The mechanism revealed that •OH and •O 2 - were active species involved in the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production process. Moreover, the as-prepared samples have been successfully applied to degrade norfloxacin and exhibited excellent removal efficiency. This work provides an efficient route to develop highly efficient photocatalyst based on metal-organic frameworks (MOF).

Dongxue Sun,Shijie Chen,Jinlong Li,Guozhe Sui,Dongxuan Guo,Ning Liu,Renjiang Lv,Shuang Sui

In this study, ZnO/ZnS/g-C 3 N 4 composite materials were successfully synthesized via a combination of hydrothermal treatment and calcination for the electrochemical detection of ascorbic acid (AA). A systematic experimental design was implemented to evaluate the influence of key parameters, including the amount of ZnS added, the loading ratio of ZnO/ZnS onto g-C 3 N 4 , and the pH conditions during detection, on sensor performance. Comprehensive material characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy transmission electron microscopy X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, providing detailed insights into the composites’ microstructure, crystallinity, elemental composition, and chemical bonding. The sensor exhibited excellent performance for AA detection, with a broad linear detection range of 20–5000 μM, a low detection limit of 1.2 μmol/L (S/N = 3), and high recovery rates between 98.23% and 105.02%, accompanied by low relative standard deviations (1.56–3.12%). Furthermore, application of the sensor in cyclic voltammetry analysis of commercial vitamin C tablets yielded accurate and reliable results, confirming its strong stability, anti-interference capacity, and reproducibility.

Rapid thermally driven color-switching in dual cation-modified InP/ZnS quantum dots for visible fluorescence thermometers

Shuaitao Qin,Maoyuan Huang,Bo Tan,Haiyang Li,Jun Wang,Shiliang Mei,Wanlu Zhang,Pengfei Tian,Ruiqian Guo

Indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs), as an environmentally benign semiconductor material, exhibit significant potential in optoelectronic devices. The incorporation of metal ions is a widely adopted strategy to modulate the optical properties of InP QDs, thereby expanding their application scope. In this study, rapid thermochromic response was achieved in InP/ZnS QDs through dual cation (Nd 3+ &Mn 2+ ) modification. The introduction of Mn 2+ endowed the QDs with dual emission characteristics, while Nd 3+ stabilized the intrinsic emission at the pure blue wavelength of 470 nm by suppressing QD growth via interface anchoring. Investigations revealed that temperature elevation activated the carrier re-excitation process, leading to enhanced intrinsic emission and enabling dynamic fluorescence color switching from orange-yellow to blue. Leveraging this property, a ratiometric fluorescence thermometer with a detection range of 293–533 K and a response time of <5 s was developed. Furthermore, variable-power excitation experiments elucidated the saturation behavior of Mn 2+ impurity emission, corroborating the competitive mechanism between intrinsic and impurity emissions. This work provides novel insights into the multifunctional fluorescence modulation of cadmium-free QDs, with significant implications for smart sensing and eco-friendly display technologies.

Zn-Doped SnO2 NPs as Electron Transport Layer in Green CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes

Li Luo,Zhen Fan,Zhaobin Zhang,Danyang Liu,Guofa Li,Lishuang Wang,Bingsuo Zou

SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been used as an electron transport layer (ETL) in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) to achieve stable and high-performance devices. However, SnO2 NPs with high electron mobility cause the problem of imbalanced charge injection and transport in QLEDs. Meanwhile, the SnO2 NPs synthesized at low temperature have hydroxyl (−OH) groups, which could damage the performance of QLEDs. Here, Zn doping was applied to modulate the properties of SnO2 NPs and achieve better carrier balance in green CdSe/ZnS QLED. The maximum current efficiency (CE) of QLED with 5 wt % Zn-doped SnO2 NPs is 2.3-fold higher than that of SnO2-based QLED. In addition, a small-molecule 4,4′-bis(carbazole-9-yl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBP)-mixed poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) layer was used as a hole transport layer to facilitate the hole injection and charge balance. As a result, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.03% is obtained for the best performance device. The T50 lifetime at a luminance of 100 cd/m2, for a device based on 5 wt % Zn-doped SnO2 ETL, is 9141 h, which is 2.29-fold longer than the reference one. This work provides a new strategy to obtain high-performance and stable display arrays.

ZnS@ZIF-8 core-shell nanoparticles incorporated with ICG and TPZ to enable H2S-amplified synergistic therapy

Chao Fang,Dong Cen,Yifan Wang,Yongjun Wu,Xiujun Cai,Xiang Li,Gaorong Han

Abnormal tumor microenvironment, such as hypoxia, interstitial hypertension and low pH, leads to unexpected resistance for current tumor treatment. The development of versatile drug delivery systems which present responsive characteristics to tumor microenvironment (TME) has been extensively carried out, but remains challenging. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) coated ZnS nanoparticles have been designed and prepared for co-delivery of ICG/TPZ molecules, denoted as ZSZIT, for H 2 S-amplified synergistic therapy. Methods: The ZSZ nanoparticles were characterized using SEM, TEM and XRD. The in vitro viabilities of cancer cells cultured with ZSZIT under normoxia/hypoxia conditions were evaluated by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. In addition, in vivo anti-tumor effect was also performed using male Balb/c nude mice as animal model. Results: ZSZIT shows cascade PDT and hypoxia-activated chemotherapeutic effect under an 808nm NIR irradiation. Meanwhile, ZSZIT degrades under tumor acidic environment, and H 2 S produced by ZnS cores could inhibit the expression of catalase, which subsequently favors the hypoxia and antitumor effect of TPZ drug. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate the H 2 S-sensitized synergistic antitumor effect based on cascade PDT/chemotherapy. Conclusion: This cascade H 2 S-sensitized synergistic nanoplatform has enabled more effective and lasting anticancer treatment.

Temperature dependence photoluminescence properties of ZnSe-based core-shell quantum dots

Tingting Zhang,Qing Ma,Qingping Li,Lanting Huang,Yuqiong Feng,Hongwei Duan,Xinlei Chen,Qinghua Li,Xiao Jin,Jinke Bai,Jinke Bai,Bing Xu,Bing Xu

Heavy metal-free ZnSe-based core-shell quantum dots (QDs) are promising emitting material for achieving violet-blue luminescence. Investigating the temperature-dependent variations in the photoluminescence (PL) properties of ZnSe-based QDs will enhance our understanding of the intrinsic factors that influence their diverse luminescence characteristics. Here we select the optimally synthesized ZnSe core QDs with three diameters (4.1, 5.2, and 8.3 nm) and ZnSe/ZnS core-shell QDs to study their temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties. As the sample temperature is increased, the PL intensity decreases, the emission energy redshifts, and the spectral become broader. We observe a reduction in the exciton- longitudinal optical (LO)-phonon coupling constant from 21.7 meV to 16.1 meV as the diameter of ZnSe core QDs increased from 4.1 nm to 8.3 nm. This decrease is associated with a narrower homogeneous broadening of the emission spectrum. Besides, the epitaxial growth of a ZnS wide bandgap shells onto the ZnSe core QDs can effectively isolate the photogenerated excitons away from the inorganic-organic interface, thus reducing the PL peak width and increasing the exciton binding energy of the QDs. Our research provides a valuable addition to the existing studies on the photoluminescence properties of ZnSe-based core-shell QDs.

Color-tunable Gd-Zn-Cu-In-S/ZnS quantum dots for dual modality magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging

Guo Weisheng,Yang Weitao,Wang Yu,Sun Xiaolian,Liu Zhongyun,Zhang Bingbo,Chang Jin,Chen Xiaoyuan

Inorganic nanoparticles have been introduced into biological systems as useful probes for in vitro diagnosis and in vivo imaging, due to their relatively small size and exceptional physical and chemical properties. A new kind of colortunable Gd-Zn-Cu-In-S/ZnS (GZCIS/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) with stable crystal structure has been successfully synthesized and utilized for magnetic resonance (MR) and fluorescence dual modality imaging. This strategy allows successful fabrication of GZCIS/ZnS QDs by incorporating Gd into ZCIS/ZnS QDs to achieve great MR enhancement without compromising the fluorescence properties of the initial ZCIS/ZnS QDs. The as-prepared GZCIS/ZnS QDs show high T 1 MR contrast as well as “color-tunable” photoluminescence (PL) in the range of 550–725 nm by adjusting the Zn/Cu feeding ratio with high PL quantum yield (QY). The GZCIS/ZnS QDs were transferred into water via a bovine serum albumin (BSA) coating strategy. The resulting Cd-free GZCIS/ZnS QDs reveal negligible cytotoxicity on both HeLa and A549 cells. Both fluorescence and MR imaging studies were successfully performed in vitro and in vivo . The results demonstrated that GZCIS/ZnS QDs could be a dual-modal contrast agent to simultaneously produce strong MR contrast enhancement as well as fluorescence emission for in vivo imaging.

Flexible ZnS Nanosphere/Porous PDMS Films with Vivid Color and Self-Cleaning for Effective Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling

Lei Wang,Yadi Wang,Haotong Wu,Zitong Sui,Xu Zhu,Ning Ma,Xinyue Zhang

The growing frequency of extreme summer heat events has intensified interest in passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy thermal management strategy. However, most PDRC materials are limited to white or light colors, restricting their aesthetic integration and application versatility. Here, we report colored and superhydrophobic PDRC films based on a hierarchically porous-particle binary architecture. Uniform zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanospheres are spray-coated as noniridescent structural colorants onto porous polydimethylsiloxane (P-PDMS) substrates with submicrometer to micrometer-sized pores. Benefiting from this structural design, the films exhibit a solar reflectance of 73.8% over 0.3 to 2.5 μm and a high longwave infrared emissivity of 92.4% within the atmospheric window. Under outdoor conditions, the ZnS/P-PDMS films achieve a stable temperature reduction of approximately 1–6 °C below ambient temperature. In addition, the films feature superhydrophobic surfaces with self-cleaning capability. Notably, the temperature response and wettability can be largely retained after representative environmental challenges, including alkaline immersion at pH 14, heating at 90 °C, ultraviolet exposure at 365 nm, and water scouring. The simple fabrication process and environmentally benign materials highlight the potential of this approach for large-scale production and practical PDRC applications.

Construction of a pH-responsive nanopesticide Pro@ZnS@CMCS and its triple synergistic mechanism against sclerotinia stem rot

Yunyou Lv,Chunfeng Zhang,Yu Lu,Ting Wang,Peiyao Wu,Jie Liu

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum threatens crop production worldwide. Conventional prochloraz (Pro) suffers from photolysis, low utilization, and pollution. We developed a pH-responsive nanopesticide, Pro@ZnS@CMCS (PZC), using mesoporous ZnS to load Pro and coating it with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). In the acidic microenvironment (pH ≈ 3) formed during fungal infection, the CMCS shell protonates and decomposes, enabling precise Pro release. Concurrently, the decomposition process consumes H + to modulate the pH of the infection microenvironment and disrupts the homeostasis of fungal oxalate metabolism. The exposed ZnS and residual CMCS synergistically enhance antibacterial activity, resulting in a triple mechanism of drug release, pH regulation, and multi-component action. PZC released 3.7-fold more Pro at pH 3 than pH 7. It improved leaf adhesion and rainfastness, with higher retention than free Pro. PZC exhibited an inhibition rate of 98.16% against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , which was significantly higher than that of free Pro (30.23%). Transcriptomic analysis revealed that PZC treatment inhibits Sclerotinia sclerotiorum by inducing a “synergistic multiple stress” mechanism. This mechanism involves the simultaneous activation of stress responses, including catabolism, and the systemic inhibition of fundamental growth functions such as ribosome biogenesis, ultimately resulting in the collapse of its metabolic homeostasis. PZC also exhibited excellent biocompatibility with non-target organisms. This work offers a strategy for intelligent nanopesticides enabling targeted delivery, reduced dosage, higher efficacy, and environmental compatibility.

In-situ grown core-shell CdMoO4@ZnS structures form S-scheme heterojunction for detecting tert-butylhydroquinone in food

Linzi Huang,Xiaoqian Sun,Kunxiang Deng,Yuan Chen,Dan Guo,Xinyi Li,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a widely used antioxidant for extending food shelf life, requires strict content control to ensure food safety. Here, we constructed a core-shell CdMoO 4 @ZnS S-scheme heterojunction via in situ growth for highly sensitive detection of TBHQ. Compared with our previously reported heterojunction sensors, this system achieves synergistic enhancement through polyvinylpyrrolidone-mediated morphology regulation and optimal shell-thickness engineering, effectively mitigating limitations in charge separation and stability. The developed photoelectrochemical sensor exhibits a wide dual-range detection capability (0.015–20 μM and 20–190 μM) with an ultralow detection limit of 1.8 nM. The exceptional sensing performance was elucidated by density functional theory calculations and redox potential analysis. Furthermore, the sensor achieves excellent recovery rates (97.05% - 104.23%) in real-sample analyses and retains more than 91.33% of its initial response after 8 weeks of storage, highlighting its strong potential for practical food-safety monitoring applications.
