Efficient Removal of Methyl Orange and Alizarin Red S from pH-Unregulated Aqueous Solution by the Catechol–Amine Resin Composite Using Hydrocellulose as Precursor
We report a novel composite absorbent prepared by the simple method that catechol-amine resin coats the hydrocellulose based on the adhesion property like polydopamine. The composite which contains many chelating groups on its surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The obtained adsorbents were investigated to remove Methyl Orange (MO) and Alizarin Red S (AR) from pH-unregulated aqueous system by batch experiments, including the affected factors of adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature. Results showed the adsorption processes belonged to the chemisorption and exhibited a spontaneous and endothermic nature. Besides, the removal performances fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetic model very well. The maximum adsorption amounts of MO and AR were 189.39 and 284.09 mg/g at 303 K, respectively. The difference about adsorption amounts may be caused by the strong effect of π–π conjugation and hydrogen bonding between adsorbent and AR. Furthermore, the adsorption processes exhibited a spontaneous and endothermic nature. The recycling test indicated that the adsorbent stayed stable for the removal of both dyes by desorbed three times. Accordingly, the adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and rapid removal rate should be a promising material for the removal of anionic dyes from sewage.
Magnetic field-assisted surface engineering technology for active regulation of Fe3O4 medium to enable the laccase electrochemical biosensing of catechol with visible stripe patterns
Background Catechol (CC), a prevalent phenolic compound, is a byproduct in various agricultural, chemical, and industrial processes. CC detection is crucial for safeguarding water quality and plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall quality of life of individuals. Electrochemical biosensors exhibit rapid responses, have small sizes, and can be used for real-time monitoring. Therefore, the development of a fast and sensitive electrochemical biosensor for CC detection is crucial. Result In this study, a laccase-based electrochemical biosensor for detection of CC is successfully developed using Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as medium and optimized by applying a magnetic field. This research proposes a unique strategy for biosensor enhancement by actively controlling the distribution of magnetic materials on the electrode surface through the application of a magnetic field, resulting in a visibly alternating stripe pattern. This approach effectively disperses magnetic particles, preventing their aggregation and reducing the boundary layer thickness, enhancing the electrochemical response of the biosensor. After fabrication condition optimization, CC is successfully detected using this biosensor. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent performance with a wide linear detection range of 10–1000 μM, a low detection limit of 1.25 μM, and a sensitivity of 7.9 μA/mM. The fabricated sensor exhibits good selectivity and reliable detection in real water samples. In addition, the laccase-based sensor has the potential for the fast and accurate monitoring of CC in olive oil. Significance The magnetic field optimization in this study significantly improved the performance of the electrochemical biosensor for detecting CC in environmental samples. Overall, the sensor developed in this study has the potential for fast and accurate monitoring of CC in environmental samples, highlighting the potential importance of a magnetic field environment in improving the performance of catechol electrochemical biosensors.
Study on the application of reduced graphene oxide and multiwall carbon nanotubes hybrid materials for simultaneous determination of catechol, hydroquinone, p-cresol and nitrite
In this paper, the reduced graphene oxide and multiwall carbon nanotubes hybrid materials (RGO–MWNTs) were prepared and a strategy for detecting environmental contaminations was proposed on the basis of RGO–MWNTs modified electrode. The hybrid materials were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N 2 sorption–desorption isotherms. Due to the excellent catalytic activity, enhanced electrical conductivity and high surface area of the RGO–MWNTs, the simultaneous measurement of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), p-cresol (PC) and nitrite (NO 2 − ) with four well-separate peaks was achieved at the RGO–MWNTs modified electrode. The linear response ranges for HQ, CC, PC and NO 2 − were 8.0–391.0 μM, 5.5–540.0 μM, 5.0–430.0 μM and 75.0–6060.0 μM, correspondingly, and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 2.6 μM, 1.8 μM, 1.6 μM and 25.0 μM, respectively. The outstanding film forming ability of RGO–MWNTs hybrid materials endowed the modified electrode enhanced stability. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor was applied for the simultaneous determination of HQ, CC, PC and NO 2 − in the river water sample.
Integrating High-resolution Bioassay Profiling with Affinity-based Ligand Fishing for Unveiling Galloylated Derivatives as Novel Catechol-O-methyltransferase Inhibitors in Paeonia lactiflora Pall.
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibition is a critical therapeutic strategy for Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet clinical inhibitors face limitations in bioavailability and hepatotoxicity, driving demand for novel natural scaffolds. In this study, we developed an integrated analytical platform by coupling high-resolution bioassay profiling (HRBP) and affinity-based ligand fishing system to effectively characterize bioactive compounds targeting COMT in Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (the most frequently used core herb in tradition Chinese medicine prescriptions for PD treatment). Parallel High-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection and tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-MS/MS) coupled with nanofractionation enabled real-time bioactivity mapping via 384-well COMT inhibition assays, while semi-preparative liquid chromatography was employed to further identify co-eluted components. HRBP and immobilized COMT ligand fishing identified 16 and 21 candidates, respectively, with 5 overlapping bioactive markers. Notably, the potent inhibitors galloylpaeoniflorin (IC 50 = 16.2 ± 3.4 μM) and 1,2,3,4,6-O-pentagalloylglucose (IC 50 = 3.1 ± 0.5 μM) exhibited comparable potency to the positive control morin (IC 50 = 10.1 ± 0.7 μM). Molecular docking results further revealed the critical interactions and binding sites between the active compounds and COMT. The validated platform demonstrates significant potential for rapid discovery of plant-derived enzyme inhibitors, bridging advanced separation, bioactivity screening, and mechanistic validation in neurodegenerative therapeutic development.
One-step catechol-based biomimetic strategy to fabricate organic-inorganic hybrid coatings on PTFE flat membrane for the improvement of hydrophilicity and fouling resistance
Recently, plant polyphenols had been proved to be potential candidates for dopamine because of their low-cost and similar coating ability. In this paper, a facile method was developed to modify the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) flat microfiltration (MF) membrane via the co-deposition of catechol (CA) and silane coupling agent for the improvements of hydrophilicity and anti-fouling property. The membrane performance can be tuned by changing the concentration of silane coupling agent. After using this cheap and simple modification method, the PTFE flat membrane was endowed with excellent hydrophilicity, high water permeation flux and superior anti-fouling property. Moreover, interestingly, a colorless membrane was obtained by this method. Then, the anti-fouling test was conducted on the modified PTFE flat membranes. The as-prepared hydrophilic PTFE flat membranes possess excellent bovine serum albumin (BSA) fouling resistance. Finally, the surface stability of the modified membrane was studied and the modified membrane shows excellent stability under the acidic condition but weak to strong alkali.
[Ni(en)3](NO3)2 as precursor to synthesis of highly dispersed Ni on HMS for the catalytic of 1, 2-cyclohexanediol to catechol
A bimetallic Ni-Pt catalyst (6Ni-Pt-HMS) was designed for the dehydrogenation of 1,2-cyclohexanediol (CHD) to catechol. The hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) as support, loaded with platinum and nickel by one-pot and incipient-wetness impregnation method, respectively. [Ni(en) 3 ](NO 3 ) 2 is used as the precursor of nickel. The physi-cochemical properties of the catalysts were examined by XRD, BET, SEM and TEM techniques. The effect of ethylenediamine on nickel dispersion during impregnation was studied by comparing with the traditional precursor (nickel nitrate). FTIR and TGA results showed that the presence of ethylenediamine modifies the behavior of nickel during impregnation and calcination . The activity and stability of the catalysts were evaluated on a fixed-bed, revealing the influence of mesoporous structure, ethylenediamine, and platinum on reaction. The 6Ni-Pt-HMS catalyst, with the conversion of CHD is 100 %, the selectivity of catechol as high as 99.7 % with the liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) is 9 h −1 , and a long-term stability. The deactivation mechanism of the spent catalyst was analyzed by BET, TGA, SEM, TEM-EDX and ICP-OES.
An ordered one-step colorimetric sensor for the selective determination of catechol based on the polyacrylic acid-coated cerium oxide with laccase-like activity
A one-step colorimetric sensing platform had been constructed for catechol determination based on polyacrylic acid-coated cerium oxide (PAA-CeO2) with a significant laccase-like activity. Compared with the traditional nanozyme-based colorimetric determination methods for catechol, the PAA-CeO2 nanozyme with laccase-like activity did not require biotoxic and poor stability H2O2 in this method. PAA-CeO2 could directly catalyze the oxidation of catechol to o-quinone in the presence of dissolved O2, and the oxidation product was coupled with 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AAP) to form a pink product at the maximum absorption of 512 nm (OD512). By utilizing the relationship between the concentration of catechol and the OD512 intensity to achieve sensitivity quantitative analysis and visual determination of catechol in an ordered and one-step reaction, which provided a dynamic range from 0.5 to 50 μmol L−1 within a low detection limit of 0.121 μmol L−1. In addition, this colorimetric sensing platform based on PAA-CeO2 had satisfactory repeatability and stability, which could be used for the catalytic degradation of other phenolic compounds in the environment to ensure public health and environmental safety.
Low MWCO non-polyamide nanofiltration membranes synthesized in aqueous by coupling with catechol-amine chemistry and the oxidation-induced self-polymerization of m-phenylenediamine
Catechol-amine coatings offer versatile routes for surface modifications and nanofiltration (NF) membrane preparations. However, the formation of the selective layer is time-consuming and often deficient, rendering it unsuitable for large-scale applications. In this work, oxidation-induced self-polymerization and catechol-amine chemistry were combined to rapidly construct nanofiltration membranes in an aqueous medium . M -phenylenediamine (MPD) underwent oxidation and self-polymerized on a polysulfone (PSF) support. The addition of sodium periodate facilitated the subsequent tannic acid (TA) coating. The catechol-amine reaction between oxidized TA and poly-MPD forms crosslinked poly TA-MPD complexes, offering the resulting membrane a high selectivity. The role of NaIO 4 in the selective layer formation and the influences of the synthesis parameters on the membrane performance were discussed. Utilizing the facile method enabled the achievement of a low molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) NF membrane (180 Da). The membrane exhibited a high water permeance (10.9 Lm −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and good salt rejections (93 % for Na 2 SO 4 ). The filtration of the bovine serum acid (BSA) solution demonstrated the membrane has good antifouling performance with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 95.1 %. The proposed method offers a straightforward and rapid approach to fabricating low MWCO NF membranes in an aqueous medium, which has potential in large-scale applications.
A novel fluorescent probe involving a graphene quantum dot–enzyme hybrid system for the analysis of hydroquinone in the presence of toxic resorcinol and catechol
An efficient method for the analysis of hydroquinone at trace levels in water samples has been developed in the form of a fluorescent probe based on graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The analytical variable, fluorescence quenching, was generated from the formation of benzoquinone intermediates, which formed during the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone by horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In general, the reaction mechanism involved hydroquinone, as an electron acceptor, which affected the surface state of GQDs via an electron transfer effect. The water-soluble GQDs were directly prepared by the pyrolysis of citric acid and with the use of the mentioned hybrid enzyme system, the detection limit for hydroquinone was as low as 8.4 × 10−8 M. Furthermore, this analysis was almost unaffected by other phenol and quinine compounds, such as phenol, resorcinol and other quinines, and therefore, the developed GQD method produced satisfactory results for the analysis of hydroquinone in several different lake water samples.
Gold nanoparticle–graphene nanohybrid bridged 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol and nitrite
In this report, gold nanoparticle–graphene nanohybrids (Au–GR) and 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT–SH) were synthesized. And a novel hybrid material MWCNT–SH@Au–GR was obtained by the interaction between gold nanoparticles of two dimensional (2D) Au–GR and SH groups of 1D MWCNT–SH. Due to the synergistic effects between MWCNT–SH and Au–GR and excellent film forming ability of MWCNT–SH@Au–GR, the obtained MWCNT–SH@Au–GR was used as a modifier to fabricate a chemically modified electrode for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), resorcinol (RC) and nitrite (NO2−). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the morphology of MWCNT–SH@Au–GR. The electrochemical behavior of the sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques. Results showed that it was feasible to simultaneously measure HQ, CC, RC and NO2−. The linear response ranges for HQ, CC, RC and NO2− were 54.5–1250.5 μM, 11.0–126.0 μM, 43.5–778.5 μM and 86.0–7500.0 μM and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 4.17 μM, 1.00 μM, 7.80 μM and 23.5 μM, respectively.
A novel electrochemical sensor for the selective determination of hydroquinone and catechol using synergic effect of electropolymerized nicotinic acid film and Cd-doped ZnWO4 nanoneedle
A sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on poly-(nicotinic acid) (PNA) film and Cd-doped ZnWO 4 (Cd-ZnWO 4 ) nanoneedles organic-inorganic nanocomposite modified carbon paste electrodes (PNA(ii)/Cd(0.02)-ZnWO 4 /CPE) is successfully constructed and applied to study the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical techniques are used to characterize the composition , morphology and electrochemical properties of the modified electrode . The sensor exhibits strong electrocatalytical activity towards the oxidation of HQ and CC for the higher specific surface area of Cd-ZnWO 4 nanoneedles, fluent electron transfer capacity and the synergistic effect of inorganic Cd-ZnWO 4 and organic PNA. Wide linear ranges are obtained as 1–56 μM for HQ and 2–35 μM for CC, with the detection limits of 0.17 μM and 0.03 μM, in the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) determination of HQ and CC, respectively. Satisfactory repeatability, stability and anti-interference performance are also achieved on PNA (ii)/Cd(0.02)-ZnWO 4 /CPE. Meanwhile, the proposed sensor realizes the detection of CC and HQ spiked in local tap water samples successfully.
