As a new type of polymer, water-driven polyurethane (PU) has attracted increasing attention of researchers; however, with the popularization of its application, the following infection problems limit their applications, especially in the biomedical field. Herein, a series of novel cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-based PUs were first synthesized by chemical cross-linking CNCs with triblock copolymer polylactide–poly (ethylene glycol)–polylactide (CNC-PU). After covalent binding with tannic acid (TA-CNC-PU), the silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were further introduced into the material by a reduction reaction (Ag/TA-CNC-PU). Finally, the prepared serial CNCs-based PU nanocomposites were fully characterized, including the microstructure, water contact angle, water uptake, thermal properties as well as antibacterial activity. Compared with CNC-PU, the obtained TA-CNC-PU and Ag/TA-CNC-PU were capable of lower glass transition temperatures and improved thermal stability. In addition, we found that the introduction of tannic acid and Ag NPs clearly increased the material hydrophobicity and antibacterial activity. In particular, the Ag/TA-CNC-PU had a better antibacterial effect onE. coli, while TA-CNC-PU had better inhibitory effect onS. aureusover a 24 h time period. Therefore, these novel CNCs-based PUs may be more beneficial for thermal processing and could potentially be developed into a new class of smart biomaterial material with good antibacterial properties by adjusting the ratio of TA or Ag NPs in their structures. Keywords:cellulose nanocrystals;polyurethane;tannic acid;Ag NPs;antibacterial activity

Developing fluorine-free superhydrophobic and biodegradable materials for oil/water separation has already become an irresistible trend. In this paper, we designed two biopolymer oil/water separation routes based on cellulose stearoyl ester (CSE), which was obtained via the acylation reaction between dissolving pulp and stearoyl chloride homogeneously. The CSE showed a superhydrophobic property, which could selectively adsorb oil from the oil/water mixture. Additionally, the CSE was emulsified with an oxidized starch (OS) solution, and the resulting latex was used to impregnate commercial, filter base paper, finally obtaining a hydrophobic and oleophilic membrane. The SEM revealed the membrane had hierarchical micro/nanostructures, while the water contact angle indicated the low surface energy of the membrane, all of which were attributed to the CSE. The membrane had high strength and long durability due to the addition of OS/CSE, and the separation efficiency was more than 99% even after ten repeated uses.Keywords:oil/water separation;adsorption;hydrophobic;membrane

Intimate coupling photocatalysis and biodegradation treatment technology is an emerging technology in the treatment of refractory organic matter, and the carrier plays an important role in this technology. In this paper, sugarcane cellulose was used as the basic skeleton, absorbent cotton was used as a reinforcing agent, anhydrous sodium sulfate was used as a pore-forming agent to prepare a cellulose porous support with good photocatalytic performance, and nano-TiO2was loaded onto it by a low-temperature bonding method. The results showed that the optimal preparation conditions of cellulose carriers were: cellulose mass fraction 1.0%; absorbent cotton 0.6 g; and Na2SO460 g. The SEM, EDS and XPS characterization further indicated that the nano-TiO2was uniformly loaded onto the cellulose support. The degradation experiments of Rhodamine B showed that the nano-TiO2-loaded composite supports had good photocatalytic performance. The degradation rate of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene was more than 92% after 6 cycles, and the experiment of adhering a large number of microorganisms on the carriers before and after the reaction showed that the cellulose-based carriers obtained the required photocatalytic performance and stability, which is a good cellulose porous carrier.Keywords:carrier;cellulose;degradation;photocatalysis;1,2,4-trichlorobenzene

Nano-cellulose is widely used in the fields of double-hydrophobic interface fabric, high-grade protective clothing, chemical industry and medicine. Although the research of nano-cellulose has received widespread attention, because of its strong intermolecular force, its dispersion in the medium is not ideal. In order to further increase the dispersion of nano-cellulose in the medium, one of the methods used is to weaken the hydrogen bonding between nano-cellulose by chemical route. In this work, nano-cellulose is simply modified by coupling agent in environment-friendly solvent. Different analytical methods are used to verify the successful modification of nano-cellulose. The results show that the dispersibility of the modified nano-cellulose in water is improved, and the thermal stability is enhanced in the range of 300–567℃. It is worth remarking that the transmittance of the modified nano-cellulose in visible light still remains above 85%. This study provides a feasible, simple and environmental-friendly strategy for developing the application of nano-cellulose, especially in the field of photopolymerization, radical polymerization and cross linking reaction.

The research of using bio-based nanocellulose to construct novel structures with tailored functions has attracted wide attention over the past few years. Unlike most of the studies starting with hydrophilic nanoscaled cellulose, undecenoate cellulose esters (UCEs) with different degrees of substitution (DSs) are used in this report to construct (super)hydrophobic coatings. UCE1.9 with a DS of 1.9 is composed of spherical nanoparticles (NPs), which have an average size of 112.8 nm. A crystalline cellulose core is present within UCE1.9 according to solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Self-assembly turned UCE1.9 NPs into microparticles (MPs) via a solvent-exchange process. The self-assembled UCE1.9 MPs dispersed in ethanol are well distributed on diverse substrates by spray coating to form superhydrophobic surfaces with micro/nanoscale hierarchical structures, which showed static water contact angles larger than 150° and sliding angles less than 10°. The prepared superhydrophobic surface holds its original superhydrophobicity when exposed to acidic or alkaline conditions and high temperatures. Moreover, UCE3 NPs constructed by UCE3 molecule chains with a DS of 3 tremendously enhanced the mechanical stability after addition into UCE1.9 MPs coatings, which was evaluated through sandpaper rubbing and tape peeling tests. Thus, these novel (super)hydrophobic coatings derived from sustainable cellulose are promising candidates for constructing biodegradable superhydrophobic materials.

Because of a weak interface-bonding force between metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and substrates and the loss of customization in structural designs owing to the lack of the regulation of ion sites, MOFs tend to escape from the constructed composite template. In this study, the as-prepared 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized algae cellulose nanofibers (TACFs) were used to chelate metal ions at controllable sites and subsequently firmly entangle the assembled MOF crystals. The distribution of ions and synthesized MOFs inside the gel was monitored using Raman imaging technology, which provided an intuitive approach for visually observing the ions and MOF distribution. Using this technology, the synthesized customizable TACFs@ZIF-67 aerogels exhibited a high specific surface area (734.7 m 2 /g), low density (6.18 mg/cm 3 ), controlled particle distribution, good underwater structural stability, and excellent adsorption of dyes. This study provides a way for solving the dispersion problem of MOFs in nanofibrous aerogels using Raman imaging technology-assisted microcosmic fixed-point design.

Green bio-flocculants from renewable biomass resources have received the widespread attention for wastewater treatment, which are promising alternatives to petroleum-based synthetic flocculants. In this paper, sustainable cationic cellulose bio-flocculants with various amino group contents were successfully prepared by a feasible chemical crosslinking with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The flocculation performances of diverse PEI-grafting cellulose (CE-PEI) were evaluated to purify turbid Kaolin suspension. Further, the flocculation kinetics and flocculation mechanism were investigated. Benefiting from the high surface positive charges and supramolecular structure, CE-PEI bio-flocculants with amino group contents of 17.5 mmol/g displayed the best turbidity removal efficiency. The residual turbidity of Kaolin suspension decreased from the initial 480–8.6 NTU, a 98.2% reduction with CE-PEI dosage of 0.15 mg/mL, sedimentation time of 30 min at pH 7.0. Flocculation kinetic results indicated that interaction of aggregation and collision between CE-PEI bio-flocculants and Kaolin particles was sufficient for the flocculation process at the optimal CE-PEI dosage. Moreover, charge neutralization was the dominant mechanism for the flocculation of CE-PEI on Kaolin. Thus, this work not only exploits a promising application of cellulose as a bio-flocculant, but also provides a feasible approach to efficiently purify high turbidity wastewater. Graphic abstract

Different modification process routes are used to improve the modified cellulose nanocrystalline (MCNC) with higher fatty acid by esterification reaction and graft polymerization to obtain certain hydrophobic properties. Two preparation methods, product structure and surface activity, are compared and explored. Experimental results show that the modified product is still at the nanometer level and basically retains the crystal structure of the raw cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC). The energy consumption of the two preparation methods is low; however, the esterification method with co-reactant requires short reaction time, and the degree of substitution of the product is high. The modified product prepared by grafting polymerization method has a high HLB value and amphiphilicity, which can effectively reduce the surface tension of water. Therefore, it can be used as a green and environmentally friendly surface-active substance. Keywords:CNC;esterification reaction;graft copolymerization;hydrophobic modification

There are vast reserves of foliage in nature, which is an inexhaustible precious resource. In this study, the chemical components of five foliage types (pine needles, black locust tree leaves, bamboo leaves, elm leaves and poplar leaves) were analyzed, including cellulose content, hemicellulose content, and lignin content. The bio-enzymatic method was then used to prepare cellulose nanoparticles (CNPs) from these five kinds of leaves, and the prepared CNPs were analyzed using TEM, FTIR, FESEM, and XRD. The results showed that the content of hemicellulose in bamboo leaves was the highest, and the lignin content in the other four leaves was the highest. The cellulose content in the five kinds of foliage was arranged from large to small as pine needles (20.5%), bamboo leaves (19.5%), black locust leaves (18.0%), elm leaves (17.6%), and poplar leaves (15.5%). TEM images showed that the CNPs prepared by the five kinds of foliage reached the nanometer level in width and the micrometer level in length; therefore, the CNPs prepared in this study belonged to cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The results of FTIR and XRD showed that CNFs prepared by the enzyme treatment exhibited a typical crystalline structure of cellulose II. The degree of crystallinity (DOC) of CNFs prepared from pine needle, poplar leaves, and bamboo leaves are 78.46%, 77.39%, and 81.51%, respectively. FESEM results showed that the CNFs prepared from pine needles, poplar leaves and bamboo leaves by enzymatic method presents a three-dimensional (3D) network structure, and their widths are 31 nm, 36 nm, and 37 nm, respectively. This study provides a meaningful reference for broadening the use of foliage types and improving their added value. Keywords:foliage;cellulose nanoparticles;bio-enzyme

Hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose is one of the most important processes for the conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Besides cellulose, lignin is the third of the main components of native lignocellulose . It is essential to understand the role of lignin in the depolymerization process of cellulose using lignocellulose as raw material. Here, the role of lignin was studied by using a lignin dimer model with a β-O-4 linkage and an organsolv lignin as the additive, respectively, for depolymerization of cellulose via oxidation-hydrolysis method. The results showed that both lignin dimer model and organsolv lignin substantially promoted the oxidation of cellulose and increased the yield of glucose. 30.01% yield of glucose was given for microcrystalline cellulose in present of 10% organsolv lignin, compared to 22.64% glucose yield for pure microcrystalline cellulose. Additionally, the mechanism of the promotion effect of lignin on the oxidation of cellulose process was proposed.

Antibiotic abuse resulted in the emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens, which pose a severe threat to public health. It is urgent to develop antibiotic substitutes to kill multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens effectively. Herein, the antibacterial dialdehyde nanocrystalline cellulose (DNC) was prepared and characterized. The antibacterial activity and biosafety of DNC were studied. With the increasing content of aldehyde groups, DNC exhibited high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive pathogens in vitro. DNC3 significantly reduced the amounts of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on the skin of infected mice models, which showed low cytotoxicity, excellent skin compatibility, and no acute oral toxicity. DNC exhibited potentials as antibiotic substitutes to fight against multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as ingredients in salves to treat skin infection and other on-skin applications.

Hydrogel materials with high water content and good biocompatibility are drawing more and more attention now, especially for biomedical use. However, it still remains a challenge to construct hydrogel fibers with enough strength and toughness for practical applications. Herein, we report a bio-inspired lotus-fiber-mimetic spiral structure hydrogel bacterial cellulose fiber with high strength, high toughness, high stretchability, and energy dissipation, named biomimetic hydrogel fiber (BHF). The spiral-like structure endows BHF with excellent stretchability through plastic deformation and local failure, assisted by the breaking–reforming nature of the hydrogen bonding network among cellulose nanofibers. With the high strength, high stretchability, high energy dissipation, high hydrophilicity, porous structure, and excellent biocompatibility, BHF is a promising hydrogel fiber for biomedicine. The outstanding stretchability and energy dissipation of BHF allow it to absorb energy from the tissue deformation around a wound and effectively protect the wound from rupture, which makes BHF an ideal surgical suture.
