Methods of large-scale controllable production of uniform monodispersed spherical nanoparticles have been one of the research directions of scientists in recent years. In this paper, we report an azeotropic distillation-induced evaporation self-assembly method as a universal method, and monodispersed hydrophobic ordered mesoporous silica nanospheres (MHSs) were successfully synthesized by this method, using triethoxymethylsilane (MTES) as the silica precursor and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. SEM and TEM images showed good monodispersity, sphericity, and uniform diameter. Meanwhile, SAXS and N2adsorption–desorption measurements demonstrated a highly ordered lamellar mesostructure with a large pore volume. The model drug, curcumin was successfully encapsulated in MHSs for drug delivery testing, and their adsorption capacity was 3.45 mg g−1, which greatly improved the stability of curcumin. The release time when net release rate of curcumin reached 50% was extended to 6 days. Keywords:drug delivery;curcumin;azeotropic distillation;self-assembly;hydrophobic;mesoporous silica nanospheres

A new type of acrylate zinc fluorinated polymer (AZFP) is designed and successfully prepared through grafting basic zinc 4-hydroxycinnamate onto the side chain of acrylate fluorinated polymers via dehydration reaction. The Zn(II) (COO–Zn–COO) in the polymer can hydrolyze in seawater so as to slowly release green antibacterial p -coumaric acid ( p -CA) and simultaneously expose hydrophobic fluorinated side chains to form a fluorinated micro/nanostructure surface with excellent antifouling properties. In addition, lab results reveal that fouling organisms such as E. coli , bovine serum albumin (BSA), and chlorella are hard to adhere to and colonize on the polymer surface. Significantly, marine field tests demonstrate that the polymer has an excellent static anti-biofouling performance for over 240 days without resorting to adding any biocidal or toxic agents. This work provides a novel synergistic strategy for coordinating multiple green antifouling mechanisms to work together effectively, which would aid the development of environmentally friendly antifouling polymers.

For improving the mechanical strength of controlled release fertilizer (CRF) hydrogels, a novel material ofChlorellawas employed as a bio-based filler to prepare chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads with physical crosslink method. Here, the synthesis mechanism was investigated, and the chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads exhibited enhanced mechanical stability under centrifugation and sonication than pure chitosan hydrogel beads.Chlorellabrought more abundant functional groups to original chitosan hydrogel, hence, chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads represented greater sensitivity and controllable response to external factors including pH, salt solution, temperature. In distilled water, the hydrogel beads with 40 wt%Chlorellareached the largest water absorption ratio of 42.92 g/g. Moreover, the mechanism and kinetics process of swelling behavior of the chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads were evaluated, and the loading and releasing of humic acid by the hydrogel beads as a carrier material were pH-dependent and adjustable, which exhibit the potential of chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads in the field of controlled release carrier biomaterials. Keywords:hydrogel;controlled release;swelling;Chlorella;pH sensitivity

Large tablet controlled-release fertilizers (LCRFs) can significantly improve nutrient utilization and reduce coating costs. However, traditional petrochemical coating materials are expensive and non-renewable. Furthermore, conventional heat-curing coating process is both time and energy consuming and severely impairs the controlled-release characteristics of LCRFs. To solve above problems, green processes using renewable biomaterials have become the research hotspot for the new generation of LCRFs. In this work, bio-based polyurethane acrylate (BPUA), synthesized from castor oil, was used to coat large tablet by an innovative UV-curing process for controlled-release fertilizer to overcome the drawbacks of the heat-curing process. Furthermore, BPUA was modified with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and thiol grafted nanosilica (TNS) to prepare dense and superhydrophobic biopolymer-coated large tablet controlled-release fertilizer (DSBCF). The DSBCF exhibited remarkable controlled-release characteristics with a nitrogen release longevity of nearly 120 days, requiring only 4% of the coating materials. This research provides an efficient UV-curing strategy to manufacture energy saving, superior performance and biopolymer-coated LCRFs. It can solve bottlenecks that limit the development of coated fertilizers and provide theoretical and technical support for the green upgrade of the industry.

Agriculture lands have low fertilizer retention owing to porosity and irrigation, whereas a significant portion of fertilizer is lost through denitrification, volatilization, surface run-off, and leaching, causing losses of nutrients to air and ground/surface water. Urea fertilizer readily enhances the agricultural yield but also deteriorates the quality of fertile soils. To combat such problems, researchers are seeking to formulate controlled-release or slow-release fertilizers. We used chitosan microspheres as a carrier to encapsulate urea through emulsification and cross-linking techniques to reduce the wastage of urea fertilizer due to evaporation and water flow. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize chitosan microspheres and urea-loaded microspheres. Chitosan microspheres and urea-loaded microspheres were authenticated by FT-IR, showing 89% of urea successfully incorporated with chitosan microspheres. Then an experiment was run to compare the effects on plant growth, antioxidant and metabolite contents with and without added nitrogen fertilizer. Various amounts of urea per pot were applied to Chinese cabbage, including T1 0.5433 g, T2 0.6033 g, T3 0.8033 g, CK 0.00, while the same content of urea in chitosan microspheres as T4, T5, T6, and T0 (no urea), respectively. The results indicated that chitosan microspheres-based controlled release nitrogen fertilizers (Cm-CRNFs) had higher seed germination (96%), plant height (17.04 cm), number of leaves (11.00), and leaf length (110.19 mm) as compared to urea and control treatments. In addition, Cm-CRNFs treatment enhanced net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, fluorescence, dark respiration rate, total sugar, proteins, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Overall, Cm-CRNFs showed promising results in all treatments for all tested physiochemical and growth parameters. It is concluded that controlled release urea fertilizers based on chitosan microspheres can be developed with a simple process. The fertilizers are biocompatible, economically viable, and environment-friendly, and have the potential to prolong the release of macronutrients and micronutrients for plant growth.

A hydrogel comprising covalently modified carboxylated pullulan and concanavalin A (CPUL-ConA) was prepared with glucose-sensitivity in a simulated small intestinal fluid containing glucose. The acarbose-encapsulated CPUL-ConA (Acar/CPUL-ConA) hydrogel, with an acarbose encapsulation ratio of 0.63, was prepared by immersing the dried CPUL-ConA hydrogel in an acarbose/PBS (pH 7.2) solution. In the simulated gastric fluid, less than 20% acarbose was released from the Acar/CPUL-ConA hydrogel, which could be beneficial to protecting the stomach. In contrast, more than 80% acarbose was smartly controlled released from the Acar/CPUL-ConA hydrogel in the simulated small intestine fluid containing glucose. Scanning electron microscopy provided further evidence of the smart release of acarbose from the Acar/CPUL-ConA hydrogel in simulated gastrointestinal fluids, which is advantageous to inhibiting α-glucosidase activity and subsequently reducing the postprandial blood glucose levels, as well as helpful for reducing the gastrointestinal dysfunction of acarbose. Rheological analysis indicated that the Acar/CPUL-ConA hydrogel showed characteristics of chemical crosslinked hydrogels. There was no obvious shear thinning behavior, suggesting that the Acar/CPUL-ConA hydrogel could be stable under gastric and intestinal peristalsis. Therefore, the Acar/CPUL-ConA hydrogel is anticipated to improve the therapeutic efficacy of postprandial hyperglycemia and type 2 diabetes.

The prevention of wound infection has remained to be a critical step for facilitating wound healing following the application of wound dressing. To overcome such challenge, nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) with high specific surface area, excellent biocompatibility, high mechanical strength and strong adsorption capacity was developed into a novel controlled release system for antimicrobial therapy. In general, n-HAP was loaded with a model antibiotic, tetracycline hydrochloride and was subsequently encapsulated inside chitosan/gelatin polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) nanofibers with a typical core-shell geometry. Firstly, the encapsulation of either tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) or n-HAP led to the slight shrinkage of fiber diameter and enhancement in the thermotropic stability of PEC nanofiber. Secondly, the good water retention and air transmission properties of PEC was not impaired by the inclusion of n-HAP and TCH. Finally, the n-HAP reinforced PEC nanofiber membrane with encapsulated tetracycline hydrochloride has achieved the effect of long-term drug release, thereby improving the antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus , a common pathogen. Based on the good water retention, high rigidity, long term sustained drug release and prolonged antibacterial therapeutic efficacy, n-HAP reinforced PEC nanofiber membranes will serve as a promising platform for developing into novel antimicrobial wound dressings.

The development of effective vaccines and delivery systems in aquaculture is a long-term challenge for controlling emerging and reemerging infections. Cost-efficient and advanced nanoparticle vaccines are of tremendous applicability in prevention of infectious diseases of fish. In this study, dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLDH) antigens of Vibrio alginolyticus were loaded into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) to compose the vaccine delivery system. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HP55) was coated to provide protection of immunogen. The morphology, loading capacity, acid-base triggered release were characterized and the toxicity of nanoparticle vaccine was determined in vitro. Further, the vaccine immune effects were evaluated in large yellow croaker via oral administration. In vitro studies confirmed that the antigen could be stable in enzymes-rich artificial gastric fluid and released under artificial intestinal fluid environment. In vitro cytotoxicity assessment demonstrated the vaccines within 120 μg/ml have good biocompatibility for large yellow croaker kidney cells. Our data confirmed that the nanoparticle vaccine in vivo could elicit innate and adaptive immune response, and provide good protection against Vibrio alginolyticus challenge. The MSN delivery system prepared may be a potential candidate carrier for fish vaccine via oral administration feeding. Further, we provide theoretical basis for developing convenient, high-performance, and cost-efficient vaccine against infectious diseases in aquaculture.

BACKGROUND In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of biopolymer electrospun nanofibers for various food applications due to the biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high loading capacity. Herein, we fabricated and characterized novel hybrid electrospun fibers from dextran (50%, w/v ) and zein (0–30%, w/v ) solutions, and the effects of various zein concentrations on the properties of the hybrid electrospun fibers were investigated. RESULTS When zein was added at low concentrations (5% and 10%), dextran and zein showed poor miscibility, as reflected by significantly decreased viscosity of the solutions, and the poor mechanical properties of the derived fiber membranes. When zein was added at medium concentrations (15–25%), hydrogen bonds were formed between dextran and zein molecules, as indicated by the red shift of Fourier-transform infrared bands and β-sheet to α-helix structural transformations. The fiber membranes electrospun from a solution with 25% zein showed the most hydrophobic surface, with a water contact angle of 116.9°. The homogenous dispersion of dextran and zein resulted in improved mechanical properties for fibers electrospun from a solution with 30% zein. Curcumin encapsulating dextran/zein electrospun fibers exhibited effective radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power, along with the desired controlled release behavior for curcumin delivery. CONCLUSION Food grade dextran/zein hybrid electrospun fibers demonstrated tunable properties, and appear to be promising as delivery systems for bioactive and edible antimicrobial food packaging. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Microparticulate formulations of intranasal drug administration, i.e. nasal powder, have aroused widespread interest in academia and industry. However, low drug bioavailability due to poor hydrophilicity and rapid clearance of nasal mucosa remains an important challenge. Herein, with resveratrol as poorly water-soluble model drug, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin as complexation agent and excipient , chitosan as mucoadhesive enhancer, a series of uniform microparticles were fabricated using a self-designed microfluidic spray granulation platform. The effects of feed solution composition and process technique on particle size, morphology, density and flowability were investigated. The obtained powder presented the significantly enhanced resveratrol dissolubility over 1800 times pure resveratrol and the excellent antioxidant activity with Net AUC value exceeding 60. Chitosan played an important role in adjusting resveratrol release behavior and improving particle mucoadhesive property. This study shows promise for facile and scalable production of high-quality nasal powder using combined complexation method with spray drying and spray freeze drying technique.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has received great attention as a nontoxic and efficient antimicrobial agent for the preservation of fresh fruits and vegetables. A novel two-layer coated corrugated box was developed to release gaseous ClO2under the trigger of moisture in this study. The inner surface of the box was firstly coated with a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol-NaClO2-diatomite and then with chitosan acetic acid solution. Results showed that ClO2was successfully released under high humidity due to the reaction of NaClO2, water vapor and acid. The concentration of released ClO2increased with the increasing NaClO2content in the coating, while the addition of diatomite stabilized and extended the release. To evaluate the preservation effect, strawberries were packed in the coated box and stored at room temperature. Compared with the control, the decay rate and weight loss of the strawberries packed in the coated box (9 g/L NaClO2) were reduced up to 21.88% and 6.84%, respectively. The surface color, firmness and nutrients content were also better maintained. Therefore, this coated corrugated box with the capability to release ClO2under the trigger of moisture has great potential to be applied as an antimicrobial packaging for fresh fruits and vegetables. Keywords:chlorine dioxide;controlled-release;antimicrobial packaging;coating;corrugated box

Various controlled release calcium peroxide nanoparticles (CR-nCPs) were synthesized and their characteristics and effectiveness in trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation were assessed. In this concern, calcium peroxide nanoparticles (nCPs) were initially prepared with four different surface stabilizers (PEG 200, PVP, PVA and DEGMME) to inhibit the irreversible agglomeration of nCPs by chemical precipitation method, then CR-nCPs were further synthesized by the coating of the selected polymers on nCPs. The characterizations of nCPs and CR-nCPs were performed using XRD, FESEM, TEM, FTIR, BET and TGA techniques. The results displayed the prepared nCPs in nano size with good dispersion, reliable purity, and standard surface area. The characterizations of CR-nCPs confirmed the success of polymer coating on nCPs. The H 2 O 2 release profiles of the prepared CR-nCPs were determined by UV spectrophotometer. PVA@nCP-PVA has shown the maximum H 2 O 2 controlled release efficiency (CRE) of 50.2%. The prepared CR-nCPs were tested for TCE degradation at optimum conditions of Fe(II) = 1.1 mM and CR-nCPs = 50 mg/L. The maximum removal percentages of 99.7% after 120 min and 66% after 180 min were achieved by CR-nCPs having moderate CRE (16.0–20.3%) and high CRE (50.2%) respectively. It was found that the CRE of CR-nCPs and their TCE degradation efficiencies have an inverse relationship. The CR-nCPs with moderate CRE were further employed for investigating the effect of polymer coating with increased polymer quantity (1:40). With the increase in polymer coating quantities, TCE removal percentages of 98.17%, 82.02% and 79.29% were obtained by PEG 400@nCP-DEGMME, DEGMME@nCP-DEGMME and PEG 400@nCP-PEG 200 after 360 min, respectively. In conclusion, this work suggests that CR-nCPs with moderate and high CRE are advantageous, in long term effectiveness, to potentially degrade TCE in groundwater remediation practice.
