Influence of in-situ polymerization on the performance of cement grouts with high recycled AAC powder content: A multi-technique hydration and mechanical modification study

Guoqiang Li,Zedong Qiu,Xuebo Song,Zhaorui Zhu,Yibin Liao,Xiaohong Zhu,Dongyang Tian,Shuang Lu

Recycling of construction waste is essential for sustainable cement-based materials, yet the variable composition of recycled autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) powder pose significant challenges when used in grouting applications. The synergistic effects of high-content recycled AAC powder combined with in-situ acrylamide (AM) polymerization remain unexplored exactly. This study addresses these gaps by systematically investigating the combined incorporation of recycled AAC powder (up to 45 wt%) and in-situ PAM polymerization (0–0.15 wt% AM) in cement-based grouts, hypothesizing that the pozzolanic reactivity of AAC and the polymer network formation would synergistically enhance toughness while requiring optimization to mitigate adverse effects on workability and hydration. Multi-scale characterizations were performed at different curing ages, including setting time, fluidity, mechaniacal strengths, water absorption, hydration heat, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, 29 Si MAS NMR. The pozzolanic activity of AAC powder promoted C-S-H gel formation, increased the Si/Ca ratio in C(-A)-S-H gel, and reduced ettringite and un-hydrated C 2 S contents. As a reasult, the early-age compressive strength of AAC- incorporated specimens increased from a high of 12.0 MPa to 19.2 MPa, which suggested the refinement function of AACP in early compressive strength. In contrast, in-situ PAM polymerization suppressed C-S-H and ettringite formation, elevated residual C 2 S, and lowered the Al/Ca ratio in C(-A)-S-H gel. The dual incorporation increased porosity and water absorption but enabled a PAM-C(-A)-S-H gel network that bridged microcracks, thereby enhancing material toughness. These findings demonstrate a viable pathway for developing eco-friendly, high-toughness grouting materials through waste valorization and polymer modification.

Regulation mechanism of selective adsorption-hydration effects in chalcopyrite-molybdenite flotation separation using 2-iminothiazolidin-4-one (ITO) as chalcopyrite depressant: Experimental and DFT studies

Xiangwen Lv,Anruo Luo,Xiong Tong,Jianhua Chen,Sheng Jian,Hejie Ouyang

The development of environmentally benign depressants with high selectivity remains a critical challenge in sustainable copper-molybdenum flotation separation. To overcome the limitations of conventional toxic reagents (e.g., cyanides and sulfides), this study introduces 2-iminothiazolidin-4-one (ITO) as a novel chalcopyrite depressant. Through integrated experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we systematically investigated ITO's selective depression mechanism. Micro-flotation experiments confirmed ITO's ability to preferentially suppress chalcopyrite while maintaining molybdenite floatability. Surface analysis via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) demonstrated that the thiazolidine (-N-C S) and imino (=NH) groups coordinate with surface copper/iron (Cu/Fe) ions to form stable chelates on chalcopyrite, exhibiting stronger adsorption stability than ethyl xanthate. In contrast, only weak physical adsorption occurs on molybdenite surfaces. The carbonyl group (C O) was further found to enhance chalcopyrite hydrophilicity through hydrogen-bonding interactions with water molecules, as supported by contact angle measurements. This work establishes a molecular design strategy for green flotation reagents by leveraging functional group synergism, providing fundamental insights into mineral surface reactivity regulation for strategic metal resource recovery.

Hydration characteristics and mechanism study of artificial fracture surface in illite rich shale gas reservoir: A case study of Longmaxi formation shale in Yongchuan District

Xingxing Ding,Qing You,Jianfa Wu,Jian Zhang,Jiawei Liu,Caili Dai,Ning Sun,Linan Wei,Yongpeng Sun

With high clay content in shale gas reservoir, the hydration is easy during hydraulic fracturing, which will affect the fracture conductivity and productivity of gas wells. The illite content of the Longmaxi formation shale in Yongchuan District is high (more than 80% of clay mineral content), and gas wells have a high productivity after fracturing and shut-in. However, the hydration effect mechanism of fracturing fluid on illite rich shale is not clear. Therefore, in this paper, core hydration experiments are performed for the illite rich shale reservoir. The water imbibition characteristic of near-fracture shale is obtained, and the micro-morphology and microfracture development characteristics of hydration are studied. Moreover, the hydration mechanism of near-fracture shale is then explored from the aspects of ion diffusion and mineral interlayer spacing variation. It is deduced that the fracturing fluid is spontaneously imbibed into small pores preferentially during well shut-in after fracturing. After the near-fracture shale is touched by water, some clay minerals peel and fall off from the fracture surface after hydration, accompanied by the development of microfractures. The interlayer spacing of clay minerals expands (smectite expands by 8.8% and illite 1.5%) after water immersion, and the ion diffusion occurs. The first 15 h is the rapid diffusion stage (surface effect), while the second 15 h is the stable rising stage (internal effect). This study systematically analyzes the hydration characteristics of near-fracture illite rich shale and reveals its hydration mechanism, which are crucial for the optimization of well shut-in time and exploitation system of shale gas reservoir after fracturing.

The accelerating and hardening as well as toughening cement hydration derived from microencapsulation of potassium titanate with Al2(SO4)3·18H2O and coordinating copolymers as admixture

Zhiyuan Song,Sidra Chaudhary,Yan Ding,Yujiao Yan,Kewei Peng,Yong Wu,Qinxiang Jia,Xiaoyong Li,Yang Sun

This study develops a series of functional admixtures for ordinary Portland cement based on a synthesized water-soluble terpolymer and its ball-milled composites with aluminum sulfate. The foundational admixture significantly accelerates cement setting, achieving an initial setting time of 4.33 min and a final setting time of 7.98 min, performance that exceeds the Chinese National Standard GB/T 35159–2017 requirements for flash-setting admixtures (which specify ≤5 min for initial setting and ≤12 min for final setting), while delivering a 24-hour compressive strength of 5.0 MPa and flexural strength of 1.6 MPa. The acceleration mechanism is attributed to the in-situ formation of the active intermediate (H 3 O)Al 3 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 . Incorporating potassium titanate whiskers—A3 derived from anatase (TiO 2 ) and A4 from metatitanic acid (TiO 2 ·H 2 O)—forms microcapsule-structured composites that further enhance performance. The A3-based composite reduces initial setting time to 3.83 min and final setting time to 7.10 min, while significantly improving mechanical strength, achieving a 24-hour compressive strength of 6.8 MPa that nearly meets the GB/T 35159–2017 standard requirement of ≥ 7.0 MPa at 24 h. A4-based whiskers provide comparable acceleration and demonstrate superior long-term flexural strength, reaching 5.1 MPa at 28 days. Mechanistic analysis reveals aluminum species drive rapid setting while whiskers enhance strength through distinctive phase transformations during hydration. Furthermore, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-modified whiskers (both A3 and A4) produce admixtures that function as potent set retarders while simultaneously increasing 24-hour compressive and flexural strengths by 113 % and 91 % respectively compared to plain cement mortar, demonstrating exceptional superplasticizer characteristics. A key finding is the whisker-specific optimization strategy: silane pretreatment benefits A3 for achieving both accelerated setting and high strength, whereas unmodified A4 performs better in the same application. This work elucidates the design principles and mechanisms of tunable multifunctional cement admixtures, establishing strategic pathways for developing advanced construction materials suitable for applications ranging from shotcrete to oil well cementing.

The reuse potential of spent ZIF-8@GO-COOH nano adsorption materials: Study on their impact on the hydration mechanism and mechanical properties of cement-based composites

Wei Yang,Ximing Zheng,Mingli Cao

Spent adsorbents often contain harmful substances, which may have an impact on the ecological environment if these substances enter the environment. This study mainly introduces a safe treatment method for solid waste formed after heavy metal ions are adsorbed by an efficient adsorbent, ZIF-8@GO-COOH. This work mainly discusses the impact of solidifying the spent adsorbent in the cement system on the cement mechanical properties and hydration process. The experimental results showed that when the dosage of the spent adsorbent was 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03%, and 0.04%, respectively, the compressive strength of 28 d was increased by 4.24%, 6.16%, 7.19%, and 8.87%, respectively, compared with the cement without spent adsorbent. Introducing spent ZIF-8@GO-COOH in the cement production process does not have a negative impact on the cement mechanical properties, and can refine the cement pore structure and dense microstructure, thereby improving the compressive strength. The Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) results showed that solidifying the spent adsorbent with cement can effectively reduce the leaching of heavy metal ions in the spent adsorbent. This study solidifies the spent ZIF-8@GO-COOH nanoadsorbent material into the cement system as a sustainable alternative to landfilling. This treatment method has certain economic benefits and safety, and has some reference significance for promoting the development and improvement of spent adsorbents and improving their safe treatment and reuse.

Mesopore-confined AlLi-LDHs/SBA-15 with interfacial electronic reconstruction and hydration-shell sieving: Breaking the capacity–selectivity trade-off for lithium extraction from high Mg2+/Li+ brines

Jingjing Jiang,Shijian Zhou,Jing Ding,Jinhe Sun

3.25 mg g −1 capacity at ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 474.6 and excellent cycling use. • AlLi-LDHs were confined in SBA-15 pores via solvent evaporation-induced strategy. • Si-O-Al/Li interface increases electron density, boosting electrostatic adsorption. • Hydration-shell sieving effect excludes Mg 2+ , Na + , K + for selective Li + adsorption. The sustainable extraction of lithium from salt lake brines featuring high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios poses a severe technical bottleneck that limits the high-efficiency utilization of global lithium resources. Herein, a novel pore-confined AlLi-LDHs/SBA-15 adsorbent (SEI-AL/SBA-15-B) is rationally constructed via a solvent evaporation-induced method to break this limitation, which directs the exclusive and uniform growth of AlLi-LDH nanosheets inside the ordered mesochannels of SBA-15 rather than on the external surface. This architecture delivers three synergistic effects: (i) physical confinement suppresses nanosheet agglomeration, maximizing accessible active sites; (ii) interfacial Si-O-Al/Li covalent bonds reconstruct the local electronic structure, lowering the DFT-calculated adsorption energy of Li + (H 2 O) 4 from −1.61 eV (pristine AlLi-LDHs) to −3.06 eV; and (iii) a hydration-shell sieving effect, governed by the interplay of geometric radius and dehydration energy, efficiently excludes competing Mg 2+ , Na + and K + . The optimized adsorbent achieves a Li + uptake of 10.52 mg g −1 within 1 h in 800 mg/L LiCl solution (equilibrium capacity 12.11 mg g −1 at 4 h). Impressively, a capacity of 3.25 mg g −1 is preserved at an ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio (474.6), which surpasses most reported AlLi-LDHs adsorbents. Normalization to the active LDH mass shows that SEI-AL/SBA-15-B exhibits a 2.85-fold higher capacity than pristine AlLi-LDHs, proving that the enhanced performance originates from improved active-site utilization rather than higher LDH loading. The adsorbent also demonstrates excellent stability over eight adsorption–desorption cycles. This work establishes mesopore confinement engineering as a powerful platform to overcome the inherent limitations of layered double hydroxide adsorbents, enabling sustainable lithium extraction from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio salt lake brines. AlLi-LDHs were confined within SBA-15 mesopores by solvent evaporation-induced method to form SEI-AL/SBA-15 composite adsorbent. The mesoporous confinement effect suppresses the agglomeration of AlLi-LDHs, reconstructs the Si-O-Al/Li interfacial electronic structure to enhance electrostatic adsorption and coordination bonding capability, and reinforces size sieving by blocking large-sized competing hydrated ions. These synergistic effects enable SEI-AL/SBA-15-B high lithium adsorption capacity and ultrahigh selectivity in brine. Download: Download high-res image (140KB) Download: Download full-size image

Polystyrene-Based Hierarchically Macro–Mesoporous Solid Acid: A Robust and Highly Efficient Catalyst for Indirect Hydration of Cyclohexene to Cyclohexanol by a One-Pot Method under Mild Conditions

Wenchang Sun,Xu Zhang,Yueming Hou,Yanji Wang,Xiaomei Wang,Wei Xue

As a promising synthesis route, indirect hydration of cyclohexene into cyclohexanol by heterogeneous catalysts shows high conversion than that in direct hydration; however, increasing the yield of cyclohexanol from cyclohexene is still a significant challenge. Notably, fabricating a high-performance catalyst is an effective method to improve the yield of the target product. Consequently, a kind of polystyrene-based hierarchically macro–mesoporous solid acid (HP CLPS-SO3H) was successfully prepared by the combination of a colloidal crystal template method with Friedel–Crafts (F–C) cross-linking. Compared with that of other catalysts (3DOM CLPS-SO3H, Amberlyst-15, and HZSM-5) with single-sized pore distributions, HP CLPS-SO3H shows remarkable catalytic performance under mild conditions, in which 90.2% cyclohexanol yield from cyclohexene was obtained. Even after 10 times reuse of the HP solid acid, 80.3% cyclohexanol yield was retained. Moreover, the original morphology was well preserved and the acid sites almost hardly reduced. The as-prepared HP CLPS-SO3H shows promising prospects in the field of cyclohexanol production.

Relative Contributions of Mg Hydration and Molecular Structural Restraints to the Barrier of Dolomite Crystallization: A Comparison of Aqueous and Non-Aqueous Crystallization in (BaMg)CO3 and (CaMg)CO3 Systems

Shi Zhou,Yuebo Wang,Henry Teng

Carbonate mineralization is reasonably well-understood in the Ca–CO2–H2O system but continuously poses difficulties to grasp when Mg is present. One of the outstanding questions is the lack of success in dolomite MgCa(CO3)2crystallization at atmospheric conditions. The conventional view holds that hydration retards the reactivity of Mg2+and is supported by solvation shell chemistry. This theory however is at odds with the easy formation of norsethite MgBa(CO3)2, a structural analogue of dolomite, leading to the premise that crystal or molecular structural constrains may also be at play. The present study represents our attempts to evaluate the separate contributions of the two barriers. Crystallization in the Mg–Ba–CO2system was examined in a non-aqueous environment and in H2O to isolate the effect of hydration by determining the minimal relative abundance of Mg required for norsethite formation. The results, showing an increase from 1:5 to 6:4 in the solution Mg/Ba ratio, represented a ~88% reduction in Mg2+reactivity, presumably due to the hydration effect. Further analyses in the context of transition state theory indicated that the decreased Mg2+reactivity in aqueous solutions was equivalent to an approximately 5 kJ/mol energy penalty for the formation of the activated complex. Assuming the inability of dolomite to crystallizes in aqueous solutions originates from the ~40 kJ/mol higher (relative to norsethite) Gibbs energy of formation for the activated complex, a hydration effect was estimated to account for ~12% of the energy barrier. The analyses present here may be simplistic but nevertheless consistent with the available thermodynamic data that show the activated complex of dolomite crystallization reaction is entropically favored in comparison with that of norsethite formation but is significantly less stable due to the weak chemical bonding state. Keywords:norsethite;dolomite;transition state theory;activated complex;crystallization barrier;hydration

An engineered cascade-sensitized red-emitting upconversion nanoplatform with a tandem hydrophobic hydration-shell and metal-phenolic network decoration for single 808 nm triggered simultaneous tumor PDT and PTT enhanced CDT

Yameng Li,Yingjie Ding,Yifan Zhang,Zhiyue Sun,Jiao Liu,Mengxia Dai,Jiayi Feng,Bin Li,Chaozhan Wang,Yinmao Wei,Ji-Wei Shen

Near-infrared light (NIR) driven lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) based photo-dynamic therapy (PDT) holds a great promise for the non-invasive treatment of deep-seated tumors. However, it has also been highly hindered by the low upconversion luminescence (UCL) efficiency, hypoxia nature of solid tumors, and low therapeutic efficiency using single modality. Herein, we present a novel Nd3+ → Yb3+ → Tm3+ → Er3+ cascade-sensitized red-emitting UCNP with tandem hydrophobic hydration-shell (HHS) and metal-phenolic network (Fe-tannic acid, Fe-TA) decoration (UCNP@HHS@Fe-TA, denoted as UCFS@Fe-TA) for single 808 nm triggered simultaneous tumor PDT and photothermal therapy (PTT) enhanced chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT). The UCNP can supply intense red emission under high tissue penetrating/minimized tissue overheating 808 nm excitation, and their HHS coating with perfluorocarbon/photosensitizer Ce6 co-doping can not only realize UCL-based PDT, but also strengthen PDT of as-formed UCFS via O2-carrying/UCL protection capacity of the HHS. Fe-TA coating can supply 808 nm triggered PTT, and the rise in temperature during PTT leads to enhanced Fenton catalytic activity of Fe-TA and faster ˙OH production rate of CDT to match with the real-timely released 1O2 in PDT. The as-designed UCFS@Fe-TA thus can achieve a single 808 nm triggered simultaneous PDT and PTT enhanced CDT, leading to a PTT-assisted reactive oxygen species storm for efficient tumor suppression. Such a design also renders the nanoplatform lower cell dark toxicity. In addition, the single excitation-triggered multimodal therapy mode might address the excitation wavelength mismatch issue in dual laser-triggered PTT/PDT mode. This study has therefore presented an efficient nanotherapeutic platform enabling synergistic multimodal tumor therapies with high biocompatibility.

Controllable molecular orientation at the interface and coordination with second hydration-sphere to enhance separation of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) in hydrochloric acid solutions: Mass transfer based separation and molecular dynamics

Haitao Zhou,Kun Huang

In conventional liquid-liquid extraction, Pt(IV) and Pd(II) chloride complex anions PtCl 6 2− and PdCl 4 2− in concentrated hydrochloric acid cannot be separated using simple amine extractants according to the ion association mechanism based on the thermodynamic difference in the interaction of their inner sphere coordinated chloride ions with protonated amine. This study exhibits a novel strategy for enhancing the separation of PtCl 6 2− and PdCl 4 2− anions using thin-layer organic membrane-based laminar flow (TOMLF) extraction by controlling the acidified primary amine N1923 (A-N1923) molecular orientation on the surface of concentrated hydrochloric acid with a laminar shear flow. Experiments revealed that the separation selectivity is primarily determined by the interaction of A-N1923 molecules with the outer sphere-bound water molecules around PtCl 6 2− and PdCl 4 2− anions, and is easily controlled by regulating the A-N1923 molecular orientation on the surface of laminar flow. It is a new phenomenon that has not been previously documented. The evolution of A-N1923 molecular orientation and complexation sites induced by laminar shear flow would result in a controllable spatial geometry recognition, therefore promoting or inhibiting the separation of PtCl 6 2− and PdCl 4 2− anions in concentrated hydrochloric acid. This work is expected to provide new insight into the development of hydration-sphere coordination strategies based upon shear-switch laminar flow for controllable host-guest molecule recognition at a flowing liquid-liquid interface.
