Efficient conversion of lignin depolymerization products to more stable chemicals has attracted increasing attention during last few years. Here, we reported a novel and efficient method for lignin depolymerization products valorization on the simple and economic catalyst Ni x Mg 1 − x O. In which, the unsaturated ingredients were converted to thermal and chemical stable products, resulting in the obvious decreasing of the unsaturated degree of the products and the repolymerization of the phenolic oligomer. The results showed that more than 98% of phenol, a model chemical of lignin depolymerization products, could be converted to cyclohexanol with 100% selectivity. Further investigation demonstrated that it was also efficient for the real lignin depolymerization products, where a significant decrease on the oxygen content and the average molecular weight were shown. Moreover, the Ni x Mg 1 − x O catalyst was recyclable, and no significant loss of the catalytic activity was exhibited even after 5 runs.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of the renewable aromatic polymer of lignin to value-added fine chemicals without external molecular hydrogen is of great significance. In this work, catalytic conversion of lignin with in situ H 2 produced from the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of methanol is studied in the presence of ZnO-modified Pd/AC (Pd-Zn/AC). 259.8 mg g -1 yield of monophenols is obtained when the lignin depolymerization is catalyzed by Pd-Zn/AC-10 in a methanol aqueous solution ( V C H 3 OH / V H 2 O =9/1) at 250 °C for 4 h. Extensive analysis showed that this effective process should be attributed to the synergistic effect between Pd-Zn alloy and the metallic Pd, which promote the H 2 production from the APR of methanol and the hydrogenolysis of lignin, respectively. Moreover, a plausible pathway for selective hydrogenolysis of lignin is proposed based on the comparative characterization of the raw lignin, residual lignin, and the transformation behavior of lignin model compounds.

It is significant to develop low cost, environmental friendly and renewable bio-based adhesives without formaldehyde. In this paper, acetonitrile extracting lignin (AEL) was used as raw material, modified by phenol and mixed with aqueous of polyvinylpyrrolidone (K30), a biocompatible agent, to prepare a high-performance formaldehyde-free lignin-based adhesive. The results of the experiments showed the optimal condition as follows: the mole ratio of lignin to phenol 1:2, the reaction temperature 80 ℃, the reaction time 3 h, the concentration of K30 10%, mole ratio of PAEL to K30 1:0.4, the shear strength of the adhesive reach up to 1.70 MPa (Technical lignin-based adhesive only 0.11 MPa), and it was still as high as 1.02 MPa after soaking in water for 24 h. Compared with the adhesive (1.12 MPa) on the market, the as-prepared sample shows a much higher shear strength, meeting the National Primary Standard of plywood (≥1.0 MPa) and according with national standard.

In this study, we systematically investigated the phase separation behaviors of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/alkali lignin (AL)/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) systems and found that the addition of AL causes phase separation and the systems form sea (PAN)/island (AL) types of structures. Interestingly, the AL-rich domains are very stable even after a long time of storage up to 15 days. Additionally, how the phase separation affected the solution rheology, the coagulation process and PAN cyclization were explored. The addition of AL in PAN/DMSO solutions changes the solution viscosity and gelation behaviors. Also, the existence of AL-rich domains accelerates the coagulation rate of the PAN solution in water. Because AL degrades at a lower temperature than PAN, it reduces the PAN cyclization temperature but leads to a higher cyclization activation energy, which could be caused by their different initiation mechanisms. These results would be useful to understand how the addition of AL affects the PAN solution structures, solution rheology, solution coagulation behaviors, and PAN stabilization reactions.

Sodium lignin sulfonate (SLS) containing α -cellulose film with high compatibility was fabricated via crosslinking process using water as green solvent. FTIR analysis showed that intramolecular/intermolecular hydrogen bonds were formed after water treatment. In addition, physicochemical and antibacterial properties were analyzed comprehensively and results presented that the crosslinked film showed stronger tensile strength, higher water and heat resistance as compared to the pure sample. Better UV blocking capacity and antibacterial performance were derived from the addition of SLS . After water treatment, antibacterial performance was deteriorated with the consumption of sulfonate groups to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Enzymatic conversion of lignocelluloses into fermentable sugars is a key step in producing liquid fuels and chemicals in an ecofriendly and sustainable manner. However, because of the large quantities of cellulase required in enzymatic hydrolysis, the high cellulase cost make the production cost of glucose still high. To reduce the overall production cost and achieve the comprehensive utilization of lignocelluloses. A new intensive production process for enzymatic saccharification was developed: lignin, the residue of lignocellulosic substrates after enzymatic hydrolysis, was modified to a pH-responsive carrier (pH-LC) by simple graft reactions and used to recycle cellulase through electrostatic interaction. pH-LC exhibited reversible soluble–insoluble property as solution pH changed, and it did not inhibit cellulase activity. By simply adjusting the pH of the solution contained pH-LC and cellulase, cellulase could be precipitated or dissolved for recycling. pH-LC could recover more than 90% of filter paper activity in solution for cellulase CTec2. During the enzymatic hydrolysis of corncob residue, pH-LC could not only recover more than 50% of cellulase but also increase the yield of glucose from 78.1% to 93.0%. This new process is not only green and convenient but also well integrated with existing processes and easily applied.

An operative and straightforward precipitation-driven approach was reported to fabricate an anisotropic hydrogel actuator with temperature response. Through in situ deposition of lignin nanoparticles (LNP) in the process of polyacrylamide (PAM) polymerization with the presence of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), an inhomogeneous hydrogel network (PAM/HPC/lignin hydrogel, PHL hydrogel) with distinct gradient porous structure was achieved that could be tailored to form a hydrogel actuator. The PHL hydrogels exhibit faster shape deformation as responding to temperature and higher mechanical properties caused by introducing the LNP and HPC chains. The deformation direction and rate of the hydrogel actuator could be influenced by the lignin content, temperature, and as well as their shape. The maximum bending angle could reach near 360° with 60 s as it was exposed to 60 °C. Due to the excellent bending behavior of the PHL hydrogel, the potential applications as grippers and valves were studied, and the results showed its sensitive response to temperature, suggesting its potential application as an intelligent actuator in the future.

Lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) offer a sustainable alternative to fully delignified nanocellulose by preserving native lignin while reducing chemical and energy consumption. Herein, bamboo-derived LCNFs were prepared through a one-step maleic anhydride esterification without toxic solvents or catalysts. The resulting LCNFs exhibit high lignin content (27.14%), abundant surface carboxyl groups (1.85 mmol g −1 ), ultrafine diameters (∼2.67 nm), and high aspect ratios (>1 μm), enabling excellent dispersion and strong interfacial interactions with polymer networks. When incorporated into poly(acrylamide-co-lauryl methacrylate) hydrogels, the LCNFs function as dual-functional crosslinkers by simultaneously providing covalent anchoring sites and physical entanglement points. The synergistic interactions significantly enhance the mechanical robustness and electrical performance of the hydrogels, yielding a tensile strength of 1.12 MPa, elongation at break of 1545%, toughness of 7.33 MJ·m −3 , and electrical conductivity of 1.15 S/m. Multiscale analyses reveal that the reinforcement originates from cooperative hydrogen bonding, covalent coupling, and nanoscale network interpenetration induced by LCNFs. This work demonstrates a green and efficient strategy for converting bamboo biomass into functional LCNFs and highlights their potential as sustainable reinforcing and crosslinking components in high-performance conductive hydrogels for flexible sensing and wearable applications.

Under the macro-background of the global carbon neutrality strategy driving the transition of transportation infrastructure construction materials toward “bio-based green production,” the frequent occurrence of distresses such as potholes during pavement maintenance poses extreme challenges to the overall performance of repair materials. In this context, the use of aqueous epoxy emulsified asphalt is regarded as an effective maintenance solution. However, its large-scale application still faces practical challenges, particularly regarding the carbon footprint associated with petroleum dependence and the fluctuating economic costs of synthetic raw materials. As a renewable resource with abundant reserves and excellent affinity with asphalt, lignin provides a strategic opportunity to break this deadlock. This study developed a “green preparation method for lignin-based aqueous epoxy emulsified asphalt.” Lignin-based aqueous epoxy resin was synthesized through simple chemical grafting of lignin with glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE). Furthermore, the thermodynamic spontaneity and chemical bonding process of the grafting reaction were demonstrated at the molecular level using electrostatic potential (ESP) calculations and FTIR spectroscopy. Performance evaluations indicate that the construction of a three-dimensional cross-linking network within the system, when the lignin-based aqueous epoxy content reaches 12 wt%, is the physical essence behind the enhancement of macro-performance. Moreover, rheological and interfacial thermodynamic analyses confirmed that this network significantly reinforces the high-temperature rheological properties and adhesion performance of the system. At the mixture level, performance tests including high-temperature rutting, low-temperature bending, and moisture stability confirmed that the proposed material maintains robust high-temperature stability while balancing low-temperature crack resistance and resistance to hydrothermal damage. Furthermore, a simplified life cycle assessment (LCA) indicates that the incorporation of lignin-based aqueous epoxy provides a potential reduction of approximately 10% in global warming potential compared to conventional bisphenol A-based systems. This research not only achieves the transformation of industrial byproducts into green pavement toughening agents but also provides a scientific basis and technical pathway for the development of high-performance, cost-effective, and eco-friendly road maintenance materials.

Microwave-assisted HBr modification produced porous lignin with more phenolic hydroxyl active sites. • Mannich reaction covalently grafted modified lignin onto polyaspartic acid to form a stable network. • The optimal hydrogel achieved 93.29 g/g water absorption, 38% higher than pure PASP hydrogel. • It showed 50 h water retention and maintained 70% capacity after five repeated use cycles. • Lignin grafting lowers the cost and boosts properties of PASP hydrogel, serving as an excellent eco-friendly water retainer for green agriculture. Lignin-based hydrogels have attracted considerable attention due to their low cost and renewability; however, their limited water absorption capacity restricts practical applications. In the present work, an environmentally friendly composite hydrogel was developed using renewable alkaline lignin (AL) and polyaspartic acid (PASP) as raw materials. The preparation involved three steps: first, modified alkaline lignin (HAL) was obtained via microwave irradiation; second, it was grafted onto PASP through the Mannich reaction; finally, a crosslinking agent was introduced to form the HAL-PASP composite hydrogel. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹HNMR), and EDS analyses confirmed the successful grafting of modified lignin onto the PASP backbone. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations indicated that HAL was transformed from a spherical structure into a porous, irregular sheet-like form. Performance tests showed that the water absorption and retention properties of the hydrogel were significantly affected by the content of HAL, the optimal water absorption performance was achieved at a HAL content of 4.17 wt%, yielding a maximum water absorption of 93.29 g/g and a retention duration of 50 h. Compared to conventional PASP hydrogels, the composite showed 38% higher water absorption and 50% longer water retention, retained 70% of its initial retention after five cycles of reuse, and lost water absorption only after seven cycles. Furthermore, the incorporation of PASP increased the active sites of the lignin matrix, endowing it with superior hydrophilicity and stability. This work not only opens up new avenues for the high-value utilization of lignin but also provides innovative insights into the development of high-performance hydrogels. Lignin is an abundant, renewable biopolymer, but its structural complexity and low reactivity have hindered its effective valorization. Herein, we report an integrated strategy combining depolymerization, demethylation, and phenolation of lignin in an acidic lithium bromide molten salt hydrate system. Spectroscopic analyses (FTIR, 1 H NMR, and 2D-HSQC NMR) confirmed efficient cleavage of major ether linkages, yielding structurally simplified lignin derivatives with enhanced functionalities. Demethylation increased phenolic hydroxyl (Ar–OH) content by 1.36–2.49 mmol/g, while subsequent phenolation further elevated Ar–OH levels to 6.77–7.71 mmol/g, more than doubling those of native lignin. These structural changes translated into enhanced bioactivity: The modified lignins exhibited strong antioxidant activity (>90% DPPH⋅ scavenging), high antimicrobial efficacy (>87% bacterial inhibition), and favorable safety profiles (IC 50 > 80 mg/L). In vivo feeding trials demonstrated that the modified lignins significantly improved growth performance and provided robust antiviral protection in mice. Overall, this integrated strategy enables efficient conversion of technical lignin into high-value bioactive polyphenols with performance comparable to or exceeding commercial tannins, while retaining clear economic advantages, highlighting their potential for sustainable applications in feed additives, cosmeceuticals, and nutraceuticals. Graphical Low-cost lignin was upgraded in an acidic lithium bromide (LiBr) solution via integrated depolymerization, demethylation, and phenolation to yield bioactive polyphenols with enhanced phenolic hydroxyl content. The resulting polyphenols exhibited strong antioxidant and antibacterial activities, along with low cytotoxicity and promising in vivo performance, including improved growth and anti-influenza efficacy in mice.

Anilines are fundamental building blocks for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and advanced materials, yet their traditional synthesis is heavily dependent on fossil-based petrochemical feedstocks. In this study, we present a two-step catalytic strategy for converting lignin and its derived phenols into high-value anilines using a Pd/C catalyst. A comparative evaluation of Pd/C with different supports (e.g., ZrO2, TiO2, CeO2, and ZnO) demonstrates that Pd/C exhibits high activity and selectivity toward anilines, achieving a maximum 70.6% yield of 4-propylaniline in the reductive amination of 4-propylphenol under optimized conditions. Mechanistic insights reveal that the catalytic performance of Pd/C stems from its combination of high specific surface area and porous architecture, which enhances Pd nanoparticle dispersion, improves substrate adsorption, and facilitates the uptake of hydrogen and ammonia, collectively accelerating the reaction. Furthermore, the Pd/C catalyst exhibits favorable stability and broad applicability, delivering aniline mass yields of 12.9 wt % from camphor lignin and 10.1 wt % from camphor lignin oil. This work establishes a robust pathway for the selective conversion of renewable lignin into anilines, promoting lignin valorization and offering a critical step toward reducing reliance on nonrenewable resources.
