Heated tobacco products (HTPs) have gradually become an important development direction of tobacco products because of their significant advantages in reducing the release of harmful components. To reveal the thermal degradation characteristics of the heated tobacco products is of great significance for the development of novel heated tobacco products. The effects of heating method on pyrolysis and smoke release of the tobacco granules were studied with in situ diffuse reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) technology and infrared thermal imaging technology. The results showed that: 1)The different heating methods of tobacco granules had a great influence on the temperature field distribution. Among them, the bottom heating method had a more uniform temperature distribution and a higher average temperature than the central heating method. 2) Different heating methods directly led to the difference in the release of various chemical components. The DRIFTS spectra indicated that the release characteristic of gaseous products with different heating methods were different, while the release temperature ranges were slightly different due to the differences of chemical components. The bottom heating method was more conducive to smoke release. 3) The moisture content of tobacco granules also directly affected the pyrolysis process and the smoke release characteristics. Either too high or too low moisture content was not conducive to the pyrolysis process and smoke release. The mathematical model of the thermal degradation characteristics was established to predict the quality of tobacco granules and to provide theoretical guidance for the product development of heating tobacco.

This research has made significant advancements in the field of high-value bio-oil production, specifically focusing on the synthesis of the rare sugar D-Allose. Notably, synthesizing D-Allose through cellulose pyrolysis has long been challenging due to its high synthetic difficulty, which has limited related studies. By employing a one-pot synthesis approach using Al x -Fe y nano-catalysts prepared through a unique cellulose pretreatment method, this experiment successfully achieved efficient generation of D-Allose during rapid pyrolysis. Systematic experimentation demonstrated that at 330 °C with the Al 1 -Fe 5 nano-catalyst, the yield of D-Allose from cellulose pyrolysis reached an impressive 50.69 %, accompanied by a detection of 14.35 % furfural in the bio-oil. This breakthrough not only significantly contributes to the high-value utilization of bio-oil but also provides robust support for further development in this area. Simultaneously, the success of this research extends beyond high-value bio-oil utilization and makes a substantial impact on both the scientific community and industry.

The carbon coating strategy has emerged as an indispensable approach to improve the conductivity of polyanionic cathodes. However, owing to the complex reaction process between precursors of carbon and cathode, establishing a unified screening principle for carbonaceous precursors remains a technical challenge. Herein, we reveal that carbonaceous precursor pyrolysis chemistry undeniably influences the formation process and performance of Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathodes from in situ insights. By investigating three types of carbonaceous precursors, it is found that O/H-containing functional groups can provide more bonding sites for cathode precursors and generate a reducing atmosphere by pyrolysis, which is beneficial to the formation of polyanionic materials and a uniform carbon coating layer. Conversely, excessive pyrolysis of functional groups leads to a significant amount of gas, which is detrimental to the compactness of the carbon layer. Furthermore, the substantial presence of residual heteroatoms diminishes graphitization. In this case, it is demonstrated that carbon dots (CDs) precursors with suitable functional groups can comprehensively enhance the Na+ migration rate, reversibility, and interface stability of the cathode material. As a result, the NVP/CDs cathode displays outstanding capacity retention, maintaining 92% after 10,000 cycles at a high rate of 50 C. Altogether, these findings provide a valuable benchmark for carbon source selection for polyanionic cathodes.

Despite the crucial role of photodegradation in the environmental transformation of organic pollutants, the photodegradation process of organic pollutants irreversibly absorbed on biochar colloids (BCCs) remains poorly understood. This study investigated the photodegradation processes and mechanisms of 2,4,4′-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28) adsorbed on BCCs released from bulk biochars derived from bamboo chips at pyrolysis temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C. Results show that BCCs-adsorbed PCB28 could be degraded under simulated solar illumination (95–105 mW·cm −2 ) but at decreased photodegradation rates compared to the dissolved PCB28. The inhibition effect of BCCs on the PCB28 photodegradation increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. After adsorptive binding to BCCs, the half-life of PCB28 (0.1 mg/L) was prolonged from 2.65 h for the dissolved PCB28 alone in deionized water to 7.48, 40.67, and 81.82 h in the presence of BCC300, BCC500, and BCC700 (5.0 mg/L), respectively. Mechanistically, the photodegradation of adsorbed pollutants was regulated by the photogenerated free radicals and surface functional groups of the low-temperature BCCs, as well as the defects and direct electron transfer capabilities of the high-temperature BCCs; PCB28 adsorbed on the low-temperature BCCs accepted electrons from persistent free radicals under light illumination, which led to PCB28 dechlorination, followed by ring-opening oxidation through hydroxyl radical attack, ultimately resulting in progressive mineralization; singlet oxygen caused preferential ring opening of adsorbed PCB28 on the high-temperature BCCs, preceding dechlorination. The photodegradation of BCCs-adsorbed PCB28 remained significant though more or less being inhibited under the effects of water pH, ionic strength, dissolved organic matters (humic acid and fulvic acid), and in natural water samples. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the structural properties of BCCs that impact phototransformation processes of adsorbed pollutants and facilitate an accurate assessment of the environmental risk associated with biochar application.

The interaction effects between the main components (proteins (P), carbohydrates (C), and lipids (L)) of protein-rich biomass during microwave-assisted pyrolysis were investigated in depth with an exploration of individual pyrolysis and copyrolysis (PC, PL, and CL) of model compounds. The average heating rate of P was higher than those of C and L, and the interactions in all copyrolysis groups reduced the max instant heating rate. The synergistic extent (S) of PC and PL for bio-oil yield was 16.78 and 18.24%, respectively, indicating that the interactions promoted the production of bio-oil. Besides, all of the copyrolysis groups exhibited a synergistic effect on biochar production (S = 19.43–28.24%), while inhibiting the gas generation, with S ranging from −20.17 to −6.09%. Regarding the gaseous products, apart from H2, P, C, and L primarily generated CO2, CO, and CH4, respectively. Regarding bio-oil composition, the interactions occurring within PC, PL, and CL exhibited a significantly synergistic effect (S = 47.81–412.96%) on the formation of N-heterocyclics/amides, amides/nitriles, and acids/esters, respectively. Finally, the favorable applicability of the proposed interaction effects was verified with microalgae. This study offers valuable insights for understanding the microwave-assisted pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass, laying the groundwork for further research and process optimization.

The preparation of furfural, a valuable platform compound, through pyrolysis is an approach with practical prospects. Since cellulose represents the most abundant component in biomass feedstocks, enhancing its selectivity towards furfural during pyrolysis is crucial. In this study, S0 4 2- /Zr0 2 -based catalysts by loading them with various metals such as Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn was used to optimize furfural yield from cellulose. Among these catalysts, those loaded with iron (Fe) achieved the highest selectivity for furfural, with the best performance at a loading of 6 % by weight. This is because an appropriate amount of loaded metal Fe can manipulate the acidity sites on the catalyst surface, reducing the ratio of weak acid to strong acid and favoring selective production of furfural. Additionally, moderate metal loading can enhance both specific surface area and total pore volume of the catalyst, further improving catalytic performance. The research using a catalyst with the loading of 6 %wt Fe showed that the furfural content in cellulose pyrolysis products reached its maximum when the pyrolysis temperature was 600°C. Further increase in temperature led to the decomposition and conversion of furfural into other products, reducing the furfural selectivity. The addition of catalyst effectively improved the furfural selectivity in cellulose pyrolysis products, and as the ratio of catalyst to cellulose gradually increased, the furfural selectivity reached its maximum value of 31.53 % at a pyrolysis temperature of 600℃ and a catalyst to cellulose ratio of 4:1. These findings provide an insight into the use of biomass for furfural preparation and improving the efficiency of its preparation.

This study focuses on the use of a molten salt reaction medium (NaCl-KCl-LiCl) in the lignin pyrolysis process to modify the pyrolysis volatiles and biochar structure. The effect of pyrolysis reaction temperature (300°C, 400°C, 500°C, and 600°C) and lignin/molten salt mass ratios (3:1, 1:1, 1:3 and 1:5) on the evolution behavior of volatiles and biochar structure was explored. The pyrolysis products were determined using GS-MS, CO 2 adsorption-desorption analyses, SEM, elemental analysis, proximate analysis, Raman, XRD, and TG/DTG analysis. Results indicated that the introduction of molten salt can enhance the lignin depolymerization, leading to the production of phenolic precursors. Moreover, the metal cation (Na + , K + and Li + ) of molten salt can in-situ induce the modification of biochar structure with high porosity. The lower sulfur content in biochar was attributed to the immobilize function of molten salt. The evolution behaviour of volatiles and biochar structure during molten salt-assisted lignin pyrolysis was proposed. This study can serve as a benchmark for the high-value recycling of industrial lignin waste.

With the increasing concerns of human health and the ecological environment, tobacco stalks from the cigarette industry have been recognized as hazardous wastes requiring cautious treatment. However, there is still a lack of a simple and efficient route for full utilization of tobacco stalks. Herein, we attempted to convert tobacco stalk waste to value-added carbohydrates, bio-oil, and biochar through sequential hydrothermal and pyrolysis treatments. The results showed a high carbohydrate yield under the optimized condition using a microwave reaction system. The subsequent pyrolysis of residual solids at high temperatures could produce unexpected high-level aromatic chemicals including phenols and even benzenes—difficult to form without the facilitation of catalysts or salts. The obtained by-product biochar showed rapid absorption of tetracycline in 5 min and gradual introparticle diffusion from 30 to 240 min. The isotherm result had the characteristics of the Langmuir model, displaying homogeneous active sites on the biochar surface. Probably due to the hydrothermal pretreatment before pyrolysis, the obtained biochar exhibited a high adsorption capacity toward tetracycline without introducing the activation chemicals. These results illustrate that the proposed strategy may pave the way for dealing with tobacco wastes in the agricultural field.

The synthesis of phenol via pyrolysis of lignin can be envisaged as a prospective approach for the high-value utilization of lignin, Herein, we describe an in-depth investigation of the selective modification of lignin to effectively adjust the distribution of lignin pyrolysis products. We found that hydroxypropyl modification of lignin can facilitate the elimination of methoxy from the lignin macromolecule and improve the selectivity of phenol products. In addition, increasing the carbon number of the lignin side chains causes polymerization of pyrolysis products, which is unfavorable for the synthesis of fine chemicals via lignin pyrolysis. Conversely, an increase in lignin side-chain hydroxyl content can lead to more liquid-phase products from lignin pyrolysis, and the selectivity of phenol and its congeners will also increase. As a result, the yield of liquid products obtained via pyrolysis of lignin modified via selective oxyalkylation can reach 52 %, and the relative content of phenol and its homologs can reach 45.2 %.

With the increasing demand for cellulose acetate (CA) in industrial and daily applications, the disposal of its waste has emerged as an environmental concern. In this study, a novel and sustainable method for value-added utilization of waste CA was proposed, which involved NaOH pretreatment and subsequent catalytic pyrolysis using phosphoric acid-activated carbon (PAC) to prepare levoglucosone (LGO). The effects of pretreatment temperatures and NaOH concentrations on the physicochemical characteristics of CA were thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) experiments were conducted to methodically assess the impacts of both pretreatment and pyrolysis conditions on the production of LGO. The results indicated that NaOH pretreatment could effectively hydrolyze the ester bonds in CA, leading to the removal of acetyl groups and a decrease in thermal stability. At a pretreatment temperature of 40 °C, a NaOH concentration of 0.5 mol/L, a catalyst/sample ratio of 1/3, and a pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C, the LGO yield could reach 11.52 wt%, much higher than that obtained from catalytic pyrolysis of CA (2.70 wt%). This study provides an efficient method for treating waste CA and demonstrates its potential for conversion into high-value chemicals, laying a solid foundation for the green recycling of waste plastics.

Hydrogen production through the catalytic pyrolysis of low-value organic solid waste offers a promising low-carbon and environmentally friendly pathway. However, the design of efficient hydrogen-producing catalysts remains a significant challenge. Herein, NiO/Al2O3as a catalyst precursor was utilized to investigate the effects of reduction temperature gradients (300–800 °C) on the distribution of three-phase products and the composition of gaseous products during the pyrolysis of waste textiles. Compared to unreduced NiO/Al2O3, increasing the reduction temperature (300–700 °C) led to a gradual decrease in liquid-phase products and a notable increase in gas-phase products, with the latter rising by 10.59% at 700 °C. Most strikingly, hydrogen gas production increased by 6.42% under the same conditions. Multi-characterization analyses, including XRD, TEM, and H2-TPR, revealed significant aggregation of highly dispersed Ni species in NiO/Al2O3at higher reduction temperatures. The emergence of XRD characteristic peaks and the (111) crystal face of metallic Ni (Ni0) became apparent at 700 °C. More importantly, the XPS test inferred that the increasement of hydrogen-rich gas production was ascribed to the appropriate Ni0/Ni2+ratio, and the highest hydrogen yield of 41.50% was achieved as the Ni0/Ni2+ratio reached about 1.57. This work not only provides an effective solution for the consumption of waste textiles, but also converts it into high value-added hydrogen-rich gas.

Pyrolysis as one of the most utilizations of biomass has aroused the increasing attention, however, the key is to upgrade biomass pyrolysis volatiles and enrich the high-valued chemicals in bio-oil. In this paper, different metal oxide-modified Y zeolites, including Fe/Y, Co/Y, Ni/Y, Mg/Y and Zn/Y, were prepared by wet impregnation and employed in catalytic upgrading of pyrolytic volatiles from rice straw (RS) and poplar sawdust (PS). Results showed that the modification by metal oxides led to the decrease of surface area and the changes in the acidity of zeolites. Higher yields of gas and water were obtained over metal oxide-modified zeolites at the expense of the bio-oil yields. More strong acid sites of the Ni/Y and Zn/Y catalysts promoted the generation of H 2 . Fe/Y catalyst showed good selectivity to aromatics in bio-oil owing to high mesoporous volume and strong deoxidization capacity. The highest aromatic hydrocarbons content (63.0%) was obtained over Fe/Y in RS bio-oil. The formation of phenol and cresol was promoted with increasing the ratio of Lewis/Brönsted acid. Under the action of Ni/Y with the highest Lewis/Brönsted ratio, the phenol content in bio-oil from RS and PS pyrolysis was enhanced to 11.8% and 25.3%, respectively. The Fe/Y catalyst had good upgrading performance during three reaction-regeneration cycles. In addition, the possible reaction mechanism of biomass pyrolysis volatiles over metal oxide-modified Y zeolites was proposed. This work will provide a guide for the composition regulation of bio-oil from biomass pyrolysis.
