Hydrogen reduction of hierarchical spinel intermediates that were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method results in Ni/γ-Al2O3 nanocomposites with Ni nanoparticles (∼5.5 nm) well dispersed and embedded in nanoflakes of the hollow Al2O3 microspheres. The good dispersion of small metal nanoparticles and strong metal–support interactions that resulted from decomposition of spinel intermediates during reduction are essential for the efficient and sustainable high temperature dry reforming of methane (DRM) catalysis. The high surface area (170 m2 g−1) composite catalysts show coke and sintering resistance in long term DRM catalysis at 750 °C, the highest temperature ever tested for hierarchical nanostructures. Ni loadings and the calcination temperatures of the spinel intermediate are investigated for their effect on the morphology and the catalytic performance of the final catalysts. It is interesting that some initially non-active control catalysts can be activated during long term testing.

A ratiometric, versatile, and selective fluorescent pattern to sense and distinguish proteins on the basis of dissociation of aqueous polymer-pyrene/γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) inclusion complexes was developed. First, two kinds of aqueous polymer-pyrene were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization using pyrene functionalized initiator. Then, the pyrene molecules could be accumulated into γ-CD cavity and form polymer-pyrene/γ-CD complexes, resulting in appearance of excimer emissions. The resultant complexes responded to proteins in two ways: nonmetalloproteins binding to polymer component triggered dissociation of the inclusion complexes, accompanied by alteration of pyrene excimer/monomer emission and ratiometric fluorescent intensity changes; the presence of metalloproteins could quench pyrene excimer/monomer emission because of energy transfer. Moreover, the fluorescent responses of the inclusion complexes to different proteins could be modulated by changing polymer type and chain length, resulting in a tunable selectivity and sensitivity. The proposed fluorescent inclusion complexes could provide a promising platform for sensing proteins.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of the C═O bond has been considered to be one of the most important processes for the synthesis of fuels and chemicals. In this study, we have developed a metal-free transfer hydrogenation of furfural into furfuryl alcohol and some other valuable carbonyl compounds into alcohols as the hydrogen donors. Hydroxyapatite-encapsulated magnetic γ-Fe2O3 (γ-Fe2O3@HAP) acted as a magnetic base to promote this transfer hydrogenation with iso-propanol as the hydrogen donor. The catalytic performance of the γ-Fe2O3@HAP catalyst was greatly affected by the structure of alcohol. iso-Propanol was the best hydrogen donor for the transfer hydrogenation. In addition, the reaction temperature and the catalyst loading also affected this reaction. The highest yield of furfuryl alcohol reached 91.7% at a furfural conversion of 96.2%. Furthermore, this method was also useful for the transfer hydrogenation of other important carbonyl compounds into value-added chemicals and fuels. After the reaction, the γ-Fe2O3@HAP catalyst could be easily collected with the assistant of a magnet, and reused for six runs without the loss of its catalytic activity.

The high expression of Spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SSAT-1) is an important indicator in early cancer diagnosis. Here, we developed a nanopore-based methodology with γ-cyclodextrin as an adaptor to detect and quantify acetylamantadine, the specific SSAT-1-catalyzed product from amantadine, to accordingly reflect the activity of SSAT-1. We employ γ-cyclodextrin and report that amantadine cannot cause any secondary signals in γ-cyclodextrin-assisted α-HL nanopore, while its acetylation product, acetylamantadine, does. This allows γ-cyclodextrin to practically detect acetylamantadine in the interference of excessive amantadine, superior to the previously reported β-cyclodextrin. The quantification of acetylamantadine was not interfered with even a 50-fold amantadine and displayed no interference in artificial urine sample analysis, which indicates the good feasibility of this nanopore-based methodology in painless cancer prediagnosis. In addition, the discrimination mechanism is also explored by 2-D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nanopore experiments with a series of adamantane derivatives with different hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. We found that both the hydrophobic region matching effect and hydrophilic interactions play a synergistic effect in forming a host–guest complex to further generate the characteristic signals, which may provide insights for the subsequent design and study of drug-cyclodextrin complexes.

Selective dissolution is highly promising for tailoring the structures and functions of metal oxides toward various applications. Here, we demonstrate a successful fabrication of porous γ-MnO 2 by selectively dissolving Ca in a CaMnO 3 perovskite (CMO) via dilute HNO 3 treatment. The perovskite-derived γ-MnO 2 (denoted as CMO-72 h) outperformed drastically the pristine CaMnO 3 and a commercial γ-MnO 2 in the catalytic oxidation of NH 3 and NO, two representative gaseous pollutants in the atmosphere. Physicochemical characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed techniques (including H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD and NH 3 -TPD) suggests that the excellent catalytic performance of CMO-72 h is associated with its low–temperature reducibility and abundant surface–active oxygen species. Specifically, acid treatment led to the oxidation of Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ on the surface, increasing significantly the Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ ratio from 0.76 (for CMO) to 1.45 (for CMO-72 h) and, meanwhile, generating additional surface oxygen vacancies . As a result, O 2 molecules can be easily adsorbed and activated on the CMO-72 h, leading to improved performance in NH 3 and NO oxidation. This study may offer new opportunities in the synthesis of high-performance Mn oxide catalysts for environmental applications.

Furfural, a key biomass-derived compound, can be transformed into high-value chemicals, including methyl furoate, through oxidative esterification. This process finds broad applications across various industries. In the current study, gold nanoparticles were deposited on γ-Al 2 O 3 pretreated with NaOH etching, utilizing the urea deposit-precipitation method followed by reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. This approach resulted in a highly active Au catalyst, which was thoroughly characterized using multiple analytical techniques. The optimization of NaOH etching enhanced the pore structure and improved the dispersion of the active metal on the support. Notably, the Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 -2 catalyst, prepared with a 2-hour etching duration using 1 M NaOH, exhibited uniformly dispersed gold nanoparticles with an average size of 2.8 nm. The smaller particle size and enhanced dispersion of these Au nanoparticles significantly contributed to the catalyst’s superior catalytic activity and recyclability. Under optimized reaction conditions, the Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 -2 catalyst achieved nearly complete conversion of 1 mmol of furfural to methyl furoate within 4 h, with both conversion and selectivity exceeding 99 %. The study also proposed a mechanism for the oxidative esterification of furfural to methyl furoate catalyzed by Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 -2. Additionally, the catalyst’s effectiveness in the oxidative esterification of various substrates was investigated, demonstrating its robust activity for aromatic aldehydes and alcohols. This broadens the potential applications of the catalyst in the synthesis of diverse valuable esters.

Hemostatic powder, which can absorb large amounts of water and tends to produce repeated hydration with tissue, has been clinically proven as an ideal engineering material for treating wounds and tissues. We herein designed a polypeptide-based hemostatic powder. A water-soluble polypeptide, γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA), was mixed with the polyethyleneimine (PEI), N-hydroxysuccinimide, and 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide. The solution of these polymers was lyophilized to harvest the γ-PGA/PEI powder (PP hemostatic powder). When deposited on a bleeding wound, the PP hemostatic powder can quickly absorb a large amount of blood and interstitial fluid, concentrate coagulation factors, coagulate blood cells, and eventually form a stable mechanical hydrogel. The wound bleeding time of the PP hemostatic powder group was 1.8 ± 0.4 min, significantly lower than that of the commercial chitosan hemostatic powder group (2.8 ± 0.4 min). The PP hemostatic powder was endowed with antioxidant capacity by introducing protocatechuic aldehyde, which can effectively inhibit inflammation and promote wound healing. Therefore, via preparation through a facile lyophilization method, the PP hemostatic powder is expected to find a wide application prospect as a qualified hemostatic powder. Keywords:hemostatic powder;hydrogel;γ-polyglutamic acid;polyethyleneimine;wound hemostasis

Core-shell Ni@C catalysts with a uniform grain size distribution were synthesised via a simple hydrothermal method followed by pyrolysis carbonisation, and their catalytic performance for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride (MA) was investigated herein. When the pyrolysis temperature was 350 °C, the resulting Ni@C catalyst (Ni@C-350) possessed abundant Ni/NiO heterostructures and a carbon surface layer. Among the analysed catalysts, Ni@C-350 demonstrated the lowest apparent activation energy for the hydrogenation of C C bonds ( Ea = 34.3 KJ/mol) and C O bonds ( Ea = 65.18 KJ/mol), yielding an MA conversion of 100 % and a γ-butyrolactone (GBL) selectivity of 99.89 % under mild reaction conditions (200 °C, 3 MPa hydrogen pressure, and 0.05 g catalyst). Furthermore, the Ni@C-350 catalyst exhibited high stability, with the yield of GBL above 95 % after five consecutive usage cycles. Ni@C-350 significantly outperformed other previously reported catalysts for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of MA.

High-efficiency and cost-effective adsorbents are crucial to dry capture of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The polyethyleneimine (PEI) was co-impregnated with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) on γ-alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) to synthesize the adsorbent and enhance the capture process. The influence of amine loading and operating parameters on CO 2 adsorption was investigated, and the process parameters were modeled. The results depict that the optimal loading is 50 % when functionalized either PEI or TEPA individually, which is 3.7 and 4.6 times higher than γ–Al 2 O 3 . The CO 2 capacity of γ–Al 2 O 3 functionalized with multiple amines (30 %PEI+20 %TEPA) is 2.65 mmol/g, due to the synergies of the two amines to increase the chance of CO 2 binding to the sites. Regeneration performance illustrates that the adsorbent remains at 90.2 % of the initial capacity after seven tests. The maximal capacity of 2.70 mmol/g occurs at 70 °C. Modeling results indicate the kinetics can be evaluated by the Avrami model (R 2 > 0.990) with the activation energy of 5.65 kJ/mol. The process is controlled by physical–chemical adsorption, influenced by intraparticle diffusion, as described by the deactivation model. Finally, a comparison and assessment were conducted for their techno-economic performances, and the pathway to applications was also proposed in engineering practice.

Linusorbs (LOs), significantly influence oil quality and sensory properties of flaxseed oil. Trp-containing LOs exhibit distinct oxidative behavior when γ-tocopherol (γ-T) is present. Polar fractions of crude flaxseed oil were stripped via silica absorption, and reintroduced (LO and γ-T) separately into the oil matrix to investigate their interaction during storage. Compared with crude oil, LOs account for 18.49% reduction of p -anisidine value, while LOs with γ-T contributed to most of the endogenous antioxidant effect in crude oil. γ-T was found to suppress oxidation of Trp-containing LO at early stage (Met form), while facilitate oxidation while at their mid-stage (MetO form, Methionine sulfoxide). In vitro oxidation shows that CLD more likely cleaved into peptide fragments, while few products retain intact ring structures. LC-MS/MS analysis and silicon simulation revealed proximity between MetO and Trp residues, facilitating inter- or intra-molecular reactions and ring structure rupture. Remarkably, the presence of γ-T facilitate these phenomena.

Developing wide-temperature and high-safety lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) presents significant challenges attributed to the absence of suitable solvents possessing broad liquid range and non-flammability properties. γ-Butyrolactone (GBL) has emerged as a promising solvent; however, its incompatibility with graphite anode has hindered its application. This limitation necessitates a comprehensive investigation into the underlying mechanisms and potential solutions. In this study, we achieve a molecular-level understanding of the perplexing interphase formation process by employing in-situ spectroelectrochemical techniques and density function calculations. Our findings reveal that, even at high salt concentrations, GBL consistently occupies the primary Li + solvation sheath, leading to extensive GBL decomposition and the formation of a high-impedance and inorganic-poor solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Contrary to manipulating solvation structures, our research demonstrates that the utilization of film-forming additives with higher reduction potential facilitates the pre-establishment of a robust SEI film on the graphite anode. This approach effectively inhibits GBL decomposition and significantly enhances the battery's lifespan. This study provides the first reported intrinsic understanding of the unique GBL-graphite incompatibility and offers valuable insights for the development of wide-temperature and high-safety LIBs.

Coking reverse osmosis concentrates (ROCs) are characterized by a high organic content, complex composition, and difficulty in biological degradation. To achieve the zero liquid discharge (ZLD) strategy, ROCs need to be treated urgently. This work aims to prepare a modified catalyst under high-efficiency activated alumina (γ-Al 2 O 3 ) loaded with Fe and Co bimetals and to degrade m-cresol as a typical pollutant in actual coking ROCs. The results showed that Fe and Co metals were successfully loaded. Meanwhile, the catalyst enhances the reactive active sites, reduces the activation energy of the reaction, and improves the degradation efficiency. The degradation mechanism and removal process were investigated. The results showed that with the optimal conditions, as ozone dosage of 50 mg/L, gas flow rate of 400 mL/min, catalyst dosage of 30 g/L, and pH value of 9, the removal rates of COD, TOC, and UV 254 were 75.61 %, 56.22 %, and 84.14 %, respectively. This study provides a better treatment option for the degradation of m-cresols in coking ROCs.
