Hexagonal boron nitride/silicon carbide (h-BN/SiC) ceramics were fabricated by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Phase and microstructure of ceramics were characterized and observed, respectively, using the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalysis. The effect of molar ratios of SiC toh-BN on the microstructure, relative density, hardness, thermal conductivity, and the heating rate by microwaves on the ceramics were investigated. The results showed that the orientation of flake-likeh-BN was significantly influenced by SiC content inh-BN/SiC ceramics. With the increasing of SiC content, theh-BN flakes gradually became an isotropic distribution from the preferred orientation aligning in a SPS pressure direction. The relative density ofh-BN/SiC ceramics was 97.6 ± 0.9% at a molar ratio of SiC toh-BN of 40/60 mol%. The preferential orientation ofh-BN flakes contributed to a relatively high thermal conductivity along the SPS pressure direction, which was beneficial to increasing the heating rate ofh-BN/SiC ceramics in microwave fields.

Polyimide (PI)-based tribological composites containing carbon fiber (CF), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and other solid lubricants have been extensively studied. However, the role of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in regulating interfacial interactions and wear mechanisms in PI/CF/MoS 2 systems remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the effects of h-BN incorporation on the mechanical and tribological behaviors of PI/CF/MoS 2 composites were systematically investigated through experimental characterization combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results revealed that h-BN addition improved hardness while reducing tensile strength and ductility due to the enhanced interfacial restriction and increased stress concentration. The tribological performance exhibited a non-monotonic dependence on h-BN content, with the optimal performance achieved at 5 wt.% h-BN. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses suggested that an appropriate h-BN content facilitated the formation of a relatively continuous transfer film, whereas excessive h-BN promoted filler agglomeration and interfacial degradation, leading to accelerated wear. Furthermore, MD simulations suggested that the reduced molecular mobility and fractional free volume at the optimal h-BN content were consistent with enhanced interfacial stability. The combined experimental and simulation results provide qualitative insights into the role of h-BN in regulating filler dispersion, interfacial interactions, and molecular chain dynamics. These findings establish a structure–property relationship for designing high-performance multi-filler PI-based tribological composites. Highlights Hexagonal boron nitride improves the hardness but reduces tensile strength. Friction and wear are minimized at 5 wt.% hexagonal boron nitride loading. Excess hexagonal boron nitride triggers agglomeration and abrasive wear. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate experimental wear mechanisms.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an important thermal interface materials in electronic packaging industry with the aid of incorporating thermal conductive fillers. However, the thermal conductivity of PDMS composites is easily affected by outside thermal aging or force field. Herein, hybrid fillers containing boron nitride (BN) and silicon carbide (SiC) or silicon carbide nanowires (SiCNW) were used to construct stable thermal conductive pathways in PDMS matrix under cyclic compression or thermal-oxidative aging conditions. The optimum weight ratio of BN to SiC or SiCNW is 9:1 to obtain high thermal conductivity in PDMS. The thermal conductivity of BN 9 /SiC 1 /PDMS and BN 9 /SiCNW 1 /PDMS composites are slightly decreased by 4.50 and 4.20%, respectively after 64 h of thermal-oxidative aging when the mass ratio of BN to SiC or SiCNW is 9:1. Higher load bearing capacity of BN 9 /SiCNW 1 /PDMS composite can guarantee the good stability of thermal conductivity under cyclic compression. The thermal conductivity of BN 9 /SiCNW 1 /PDMS composite material is increased from 0.96 to 1.12 W m −1 K −1 , with a growth rate of 16.60% after 30 cycles of 1000 N compression, while the thermal conductivity of the BN/PDMS composite is decreased under the same compression conditions. Mechanisms of the cyclic compression effect on the variation of structure and thermal conductivity were proposed. This indicates that BN and SiC hybrid filled polymer composites could maintain high thermal conductivity under thermal-oxidative aging or cyclic compression.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites possess outstanding specific stiffness and strength but typically exhibit low intrinsic damping, which limits vibration attenuation in lightweight dynamic structures. Herein, a hybrid toughening strategy combining carboxyl-terminated butadiene nitrile rubber (CTBN) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is developed to enhance the damping of CFRP laminates while preserving cure feasibility and thermomechanical stability. An E51/DICY/accelerator epoxy system (100:6.5:1.2, mass ratio) is used as the baseline matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that both CTBN and h-BN shift the cure peak temperature upward (Tp: 160.6 → 170.3 °C) and reduce the reaction enthalpy (ΔH:386.5 → 255.1 J/g), indicating dilution/transport effects and altered cure kinetics. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals that CTBN exhibits an optimum damping enhancement at 25 phr (tan δ_max= 0.300), whereas h-BN provides a stronger monotonic increase up to 25 phr (tan δ_max= 0.437). Notably, the CTBN/h-BN hybrid (25/25 phr) delivers a hightan δ_maxof 0.468 together with the broadest effective damping window (ΔT_half= 28.6 °C), exceeding 85% of the linear additivity criterion proposed herein. When the materials are transferred into CFRP laminates, free-vibration tests (using the logarithmic decrement method) demonstrate a clear structural damping improvement (ζ:0.021 → 0.035;δ:0.132 → 0.221; t1/2: 0.48 → 0.27 s). Overall, the results suggest that the damping enhancement arises from a combination of EPBN-mediated ductile energy dissipation and h-BN-related interfacial/interlayer frictional losses, which can be jointly tuned to balance processability, thermal response, and damping performance in CFRPs.

To improve phase-change behavior and thermal conductivity of the PEG-based polymeric SSPCMs, a series of SSPCMs with double cross-linking networks were constructed by introducing GO and hydroxylated h-BN into the polymer molecular chains of PEG-based SSPCMs through grafted polymerization and self-assembly. GO was the main hard supporting skeleton for the PEG segment, and h-BN as 2D thermal enhanced cells continuously was linked on the GO nano-sheets, forming into double cross-linking networks with PEG segments, which has good structural stability and regularity. Thus, the SSPCMs possessed good phase-change properties, excellent thermal reliability, and high thermal conductivity. Microscopies confirmed the successfully constructed chemical structure of the SSPCMs. Energy-storage capacities of the SSPCMs could reach 149.62 J/g, which displayed no obvious change after 100 thermal cycles, suggesting a good thermal cycling stability. Moreover, thermal conductivity of the prepared SSPCMs was enhanced by 71% compared with pure PEG, showing a good heat transfer efficiency. Therefore, this study represents a creative strategy towards the development of SSPCMs for thermal energy storage and thermal management applications.

In this study, a novel nanocomposite (FeS@h-BN) that FeS nanoparticles anchored onto h-BN nanosheets was synthesized for chromium (Cr(VI)) removal in aqueous solutions and characterized by SEM, TEM , XRD , FTIR, Zeta, and XPS . The effect of removal parameters including initial pH, temperature, FeS@h-BN dosage, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) and contact time were investigated. Experiment results revealed that h-BN as a stabilizer for FeS had good stability and effectively reduced FeS agglomeration. The remarkable performance of removing total Cr in aqueous solution was obtained by effectively converting Cr(VI) to Cr(III) on FeS and simultaneously adsorbing Cr(III) on h-BN. The adsorption capacity of FeS@h-BN for Cr(VI) was extremely sensitive to the pH and the optimum adsorption was 399.72 mg/g at pH of 1.0. In addition, the efficiency of removing Cr(VI) by FeS@h-BN increased with the increase of adsorbent dosage and Cr(VI) concentration, and the efficiency reached 100% at an adsorbent dosage of 0.30 g/L. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can fully explain the experimental rate data. The mechanism of FeS@h-BN to remove Cr(VI) was adsorption and chemical reduction, of which chemical adsorption was the main one. These results revealed that h-BN as a stabilizer can improve the FeS stability and reactivity for the rapid removal of Cr(VI) contamination in water solution.

A novel dendritic silicon dioxide nanocomposite coated with a highly dispersed graphene-like boron nitride nanosheet ( g -BN(x)@SiO 2 ) was in-situ synthesized and employed as a solid-phase extraction material for the Rhodamine B (RhB) and Rhodamine 6G (R6G) enrichment in food samples prior to their quantitation by HPLC. The structures and morphologies of g -BN(x)@SiO 2 were characterized by XRD, FTIR, BET and TEM. The adsorption performance and mechanism were investigated and showed an enhanced maximum adsorption capacity of 625 mg/g for RhB on the nanocomposite loaded with 1% of g -BN via a fast, spontaneous process. Under optimal extraction conditions, this method showed low detection and quantification limits (2.8 μg/L for RhB, 2.1 μg/L for R6G and 9.2 μg/L for RhB, 6.9 μg/L for R6G, respectively), good repeatability (RSD% <3.7%), and satisfactory spiked recoveries of 94.8%–103.1% for RhB and R6G in real chili powder and beverage. Therefore, the g -BN(1%)@SiO 2 -based materials possess significant potential.

Phosphate-silane coatings were developed on the Q235 mild steel by incorporating poly(dopamine) modified h-BNs into the zinc phosphating bath to enhance the corrosion resistance . The effects of PDA modified h-BNs with varying concentrations (0.10–0.90 g/L) on the surface modification, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were investigated. Results show that denser and uniform coatings were achieved for samples containing poly(dopamine) modified h-BN. Sample 0.60 g/L attained outstanding corrosion resistance, which is in one order of magnitude lower than the pure coatings with a current density of 1.95 × 10 −5 A/cm 2 . Modified h-BN effectively accelerates and enhances the corrosion resistance of the phosphate-silane coatings.

The hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has extensive promise for metal corrosion protection due to its good impermeability to gas and liquid. However, the practical application of h-BN in polymer composites is limited by surface incompatibility. Herein, we prepared a homogeneous dispersion of h-BN in water-borne epoxy (EP) matrix by mechanical exfoliation and chemical modification, in which the h-BN powder was ultrasonic to obtain partially hydroxylated BN and the products were modified with water-soluble branched poly-ethyleneimine (PEI) via Lewis acid-base interaction. The electrochemical test (EIS and potentiodynamic polarization) and salt spray test in NaCl solution were used to analyze the corrosion resistance performance of composite coatings. The results show that PEI-BNNS/EP coating has superior and long-term anticorrosion performance for P110 mild steel. The impedance modulus (Z f = 0.01 Hz) of PEI-BNNS/EP still has 6.63 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 after 70 days immersion in the 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The PEI has an important role for enhancing the anticorrosion property of PEI-BNNS/EP coating, which increases the dispersibility and compatibility of h-BN in EP and the crosslink density of epoxy resin. Our study gives a strategy for the preparation of easy dispersion h-BN nanosheets in large quantities, thus broadening its practical application in the polymer material field.

This paper reports that a novel polyimide dielectric composite with three-dimensional (3D) thermally conductive networks and enhanced breakdown strength was firstly fabricated by filling with core-double-shell structured F-BA fillers. The F-BA particles were composed of nano-sized boron nitride (nBN) and polydopamine-coated spherical alumina (PDA@Al 2 O 3 ). Moreover, to ameliorate interfacial compatibility between F-BA fillers and PI matrix as well as restrain phonons scattering during propagation, 1,6-Diisocyanatohexane (HDI) was innovatively used as “bridge agent” to connect and functionalize nBN and PDA@Al 2 O 3 particles to generate core-double-shell structure. The results revealed that breakdown strength of PI dielectric composite with 25 wt % F-BA fillers was increased to 146.3 MV·m −1 , showing an increment of 68.5% in comparison with that of pure PI. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of F-BA/PI composite with 25 wt % F-BA fillers increases to 6.41 W/m·K of in-plane direction and 1.01 W/m·K of through-plane direction, respectively, which shows 36 and 6 times higher than polyimide of 0.18 W/m·K. For dielectric properties of F-BA/PI composite, the dielectric constant and loss are less than 3.5 and 0.02, respectively. Considering these properties, the prepared PI dielectric composite shows potential application in high-performance electronic devices.

Hydrogel treatment as a common cooling method could effectively ease pain and promote wounds healing by reducing thermal injury to the skin. However, the inherent low thermal conductivity of polymers limits the improvement of hydrogels’ cooling performance. The present study reports a simple method by combining thermal conductive fillers 1D hydroxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT-OH) and 2D hydroxylated hexagonal boron nitride (BN-OH) to construct 3D conductive networks in hydrogels for cooling treatment and burn therapy. It is interesting that the thermal conductive fillers are aligned via varying the mass ratios of CNT-OH to BN-OH. Hence, the utilization efficiency of the thermal conductive fillers is improved; and the thermal conductivity of the hydrogels is enhanced up to 1.31 W*m −1 *K −1 , which is 226 % to the pristine hydrogel of 0.58 W*m −1 *K −1 . Consequently, the optimized hydrogel exhibits rapid cooling abilities that the heated porcine skin only takes 168 s to decrease 30 °C with the treatment of the hydrogel. More importantly, the thermal conductivity enhanced hydrogel exhibits the capacities of rapid cooling, reducing heat injury and pain relieving, and promoting wound healing in vivo tests, which prove that the enhanced thermal conductive and moisturizing hydrogel can be a good alternative for burn therapy.

Epoxy-based composites with high insulation and thermal conductivity are desirable materials for electronic and electrical applications. However, resolving the tradeoff between insulation and thermal conductivity remains challenging. Based on the functional requirement, we designed and fabricated a cactus-like double-oriented epoxy composite by combining magnetic orientation and ice-templated methods. Semiconducting SiC endowed the composite with field-grading characteristics, thus relieving local electric field stress along the horizontal direction, while BN with high thermal conductivity promoted heat dissipation along the vertical direction. The composite exhibited its highest performance with 15 vol% filler, improving the breakdown voltage and thermal conductivity by 43.7% and 1312% compared with pure epoxy, respectively, outperforming recently developed packaging materials. It is believed that this work offers an efficient strategy for the fabrication of the filler structure and provides insights on the simultaneous enhancement in insulation and thermal conductivity of polymer composites .
