A blue fluorescent Si/CDs is successfully synthesized via a conventional solvothermal method , which can serve as a sensitive fluorescent sensor to detect Hg 2+ ions in water. The synthesized Si/CDs material exhibits excellent optical properties , high chemical and structural stability in an aqueous solution. Under natural light, the mixture is a colorless suspension while under ultraviolet light, it can emit bright blue fluorescence and the maximum excitation and emission wavelengths are 377 and 464 nm, respectively. Particularly, Hg 2+ can lead to nearly complete fluorescence quenching of the material suspension and the emission intensity of the constructed fluorescent sensing system linearly decreases with increasing Hg 2+ concentration in the range of 0–200 μM with a detection limit of 26.7 nM (S/N = 3). The proposed method has been successfully applied in detection of Hg 2+ content in environmental and drinking water samples. In addition, the test paper strips based on fluorescent Si/CDs are also prepared by an immersion method for rapid and quantitative detection of Hg 2+ in water environment through a visual mode.

We report low threshold, room temperature two-photon pumped whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) lasing from CdS microflakes with thicknesses down to 58 nm on mica substrates grown by self-limited van der Waals epitaxy. The relationship between the lasing properties and microflake size, as well as the recombination origins, is explored towards chip-level microlasers.

Low threshold micro/nanolasers have attracted extensive attention for wide applications in high-density storage and optical communication. However, constrained by quantum efficiency and crystalline quality, conventional semiconductor small-sized lasers are still subjected to a high lasing threshold. In this work, a low-threshold planar laser based on high-quality single-crystalline hexagonal CdS nanoplatelets (NPLs) using a self-limited epitaxial growth method is demonstrated. The as-grown CdS NPLs show multiple whispering-gallery-mode lasing at room temperature with a threshold of ≈0.6 µJ cm −2 , which is the lowest value among reported CdS-based lasers. Through power-dependent lasing studies at 77 K, the lasing action is demonstrated to originate from a exciton–exciton scattering process. Furthermore, the edge length- and thickness-dependent lasing threshold studies reveal that the threshold is inversely proportional to the second power of lateral edge length while partially affected by vertical thickness, and the lasing modes can be sustained in NPLs as thin as 60 nm. The lowest threshold emerges with the thickness of ≈110 nm due to stronger energy confinement in the vertical Fabry–Pérot cavity. The results not only open up a new avenue to fabricate nonlayered material-based coherent light sources, but also advocate the promise of nonlayered semiconductor materials for the development of novel optoelectronic devices.

The shell/core structure of CDs@CaF2 nanocomposites (CCNCs) were prepared by assembling fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) inside the inorganic CaF2 substrates using co-precipitation interaction. CDs endow CaF2 with properties of good UV-absorbing behavior and efficient blue light emission instead of rare-earth such as Eu that is expensive and susceptible to polluting the environment during the mining process. Due to the nanometer size and surface effect of nano CaF2, and the approximate refractive index between CaF2 and polyethylene (PE), CCNC/PE film exhibits better elongation at the break than pure PE film while maintaining high transparency and visible light transmittance. Simultaneously, the CCNC/PE film was experimentally demonstrated to have outstanding performance of anti-UV and blue light conversion, which shows that CCNCs can be a novel and promising multifunctional additive applied in polymers especially for greenhouse film.

The S-scheme heterojunction has been recognized as an effective strategy to boost photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. However, the insufficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers still is a critical bottleneck that limits further activity improvement. Here, we rationally constructed defect-rich nanostructured Sv-ZnIn2S4/CdS (Sv-ZIS/CdS) S-scheme heterojunctions by introducing sulfur vacancies (Sv) into ZnIn2S4 and systematically explored the role of S vacancy defects in the regulation of interfacial charge dynamics. Experimental results demonstrate that the synergistic combination of S-scheme heterojunction and Sv effectively extends visible-light absorption and accelerates charge separation. Specifically, sulfur vacancies enhance the built-in internal electric field (IEF) within the heterostructures, thereby driving the spatial separation and directional migration of photogenerated carriers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further reveals that Sv-induced charge redistribution reduces the surface kinetic barrier, facilitating the adsorption and activation of H2O and H* intermediates and thus boosting the hydrogen evolution reaction. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized Sv-ZIS/CdS photocatalyst exhibits a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate (3.852 mmol g–1 h–1). This work provides profound insights into the manipulation of heterojunction interfacial charge behavior via defect engineering, offering a feasible paradigm for designing high-performance nanostructured photocatalysts for solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) serves as an important
gasotransmitter
implicated in vascular regulation, neuroprotection, and redox homeostasis,
and its aberrant fluctuation is closely associated with diverse pathological
disorders. Consequently, the development of sensitive and reliable
H 2 S detection methodologies holds considerable significance.
Organic photoelectrochemical transistors (OPECTs) integrate photoelectrochemical
signal generation with transistor-level amplification, emerging as
promising sensing platforms owing to their high sensitivity and low
background interference. Nevertheless, the majority of reported OPECT-based
sensors rely on the construction of intricate heterojunctions that
demand precise energy-level alignment and elaborate material design,
thereby elevating system complexity. Herein, an in situ CdS-mediated
OPECT sensing platform is innovatively developed for highly sensitive
H 2 S detection and ex vivo analysis of rat brain microdialysates.
Specifically, H 2 S selectively reacts with immobilized Cd 2+ to generate n-type semiconductor CdS in situ, which effectively
induces and modulates the photovoltage at the gate interface. The
modulated photovoltage further regulates the dedoping process of the
PEDOT:PSS channel, enabling efficient transduction of interfacial
chemical events into amplified current signals. Under optimized conditions,
the sensor presents a broad linear response toward H 2 S
ranging from 100 nM to 10.0 mM, with a low detection limit of 51.1
nM. Impressively, by coupling with microdialysis sampling, the platform
achieves quantitative analysis of H 2 S in different regions
of rat brain tissue with favorable accuracy and reliability. This
work provides a straightforward and efficient strategy for constructing
chemically driven photoelectric-transistor coupled amplification sensing
systems without complex heterojunction engineering, demonstrating
great potential for in situ and in vivo detection of biomolecules
in complex biological matrices.

2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT), as a widely used energetic material, is prone to causing water pollution during its production, transportation and disposal processes. This poses a severe menace to the environment and human health. Therefore, the efficient treatment of TNT-polluted wastewater has grown into a popular research direction in the environmental field. Photocatalytic technology has great application prospects due to its environmental friendliness and thorough degradation. As a commonly used photocatalyst, nano-ZnO suffers from the drawbacks of a wide band gap that only responds to ultraviolet light and limited photocatalytic performance, and constructing heterojunctions is an effective strategy to enhance its performance. In this study, CdS/ZnO heterojunction composites were synthesized via the coprecipitation method. After optimizing the component ratio, the 4-CdS/ZnO exhibited a photocatalytic degradation efficiency of over 92% for TNT, with a degradation efficiency 20 times higher than that of pure ZnO. Moreover, cyclic experiments verified its excellent stability. The present study puts forward novel ideas and technical support for the green and efficient degradation of TNT-contaminated water bodies.

Efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into syngas is crucial for sustainable fuel production, yet conventional catalysts are often hampered by rapid charge recombination and insufficient surface area. Mesoporous single crystals (MSCs), which integrate a continuous single-crystal lattice with an open porous framework, offer a promising solution. Herein, we report a template-free strategy for synthesizing CdS MSCs in a NaOH–KOH–H2O eutectic medium, yielding materials with tunable mesopore sizes (2.9–4.2 nm) and high surface areas (111–185 m2·g–1). The optimized material achieves CO and H2 evolution rates of 7019 and 4027 μmol·g–1·h–1, corresponding to 38- and 12-fold increases over bulk CdS. Notably, the H2/CO ratio in the syngas product can be tuned by adjusting the cocatalyst dosage. The enhanced activity is attributed to the synergistic effects of large surface area, interconnected mesopores, and a continuous single-crystalline framework, which together facilitate charge separation and increase the density of accessible active sites. This work demonstrates a novel synthesis of mesoporous single-crystalline metal sulfides and establishes a generalizable strategy for designing high-performance photocatalysts. Its versatility is further evidenced by successful extension to NiO and Ni(OH)2, among other materials, suggesting potential applicability to a broader range of compounds.

Novel Z-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic breakthroughs. • Dual functions: antibiotic degradation and H 2 O 2 generation. • Integrate environmental remediation with resource conversion. • Optimize key factors for balanced dual functionality. To address antibiotic pollution, high carrier recombination, and the risks associated with externally applied hydrogen peroxide, this study constructs a LaFeO 3 /CdS Z-scheme heterojunction on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) via hydrothermal-calcination. HNTs prevent nanoparticle agglomeration, while the Z-scheme mechanism reduces recombination and preserves redox activity, enabling synergistic antibiotic degradation and H 2 O 2 production. The HLC catalyst achieves 91.73% tetracycline degradation, 333 μmol/L H 2 O 2 yield, and 80% E. coli antibacterial rate. It performs well under various water qualities and coexisting salts. Mechanistic analysis indicates that tetracycline degradation is primarily driven by the superoxide anion radical as the core active species, whereas hydrogen peroxide generation is hole-dominated; both processes are achieved through the synergistic interaction of multiple active species with photo-generated electrons. Furthermore, in situ-generated H 2 O 2 can undergo self-Fenton reaction with Fe 2+ in the material, further enhancing antibiotic degradation capacity. This study is the first to integrate HNTs with a LaFeO 3 /CdS Z-scheme heterostructure, overcoming the limitations of traditional catalysts. It achieves dual benefits-environmental remediation and in-situ green oxidant synthesis-offering a new design paradigm for low-cost, high-performance multifunctional photocatalysts with strong practical potential for water pollution control. Simultaneously harnessing photogenerated electrons for water splitting (to produce H 2 ) and holes for benzyl alcohol oxidation (to synthesize high-value chemicals) offers a promising strategy to address the energy crisis. However, charge rapid carrier recombination and weak H 2 O adsorption capacity severely limit the efficiency of this approach. Herein, we employ electrostatic self-assembly to construct a CdS/Bi 2 S 3 composite photocatalyst featuring an S-scheme electron migration pathway and a robust built-in electric field (BEF). This work demonstrates that the strong BEF of the CdS/Bi 2 S 3 composite photocatalyst significantly enhances the chemisorption capacity of H 2 O molecules and the carrier separation efficiency. The optimal CdS/Bi 2 S 3 -3 composite achieves H 2 and benzaldehyde production rates of 17.9 and 16.1 mmol g −1 h −1 , respectively. Comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations elucidate the mechanisms underlying the S-scheme electron transfer pathway and the formation of the BEF. This study offers a new perspective for designing photocatalytic systems that simultaneously utilizing photogenerated electrons and holes.

Amidst the continuously growing global energy demand and increasingly severe environmental challenges, hydrogen energy has emerged as a promising clean alternative and is expected to play a critical role in the future energy landscape. Photocatalytic water splitting represents a transformative technology in the field of solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Driven by abundant sunlight and using water as the feedstock, it directly decomposes water into clean and renewable hydrogen gas with the assistance of photocatalysts. Among various photocatalysts, cadmium sulfide (CdS) has attracted considerable attention as a visible-light-responsive semiconductor with great potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Nevertheless, the practical deployment of CdS is still hindered by two major limitations: rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and inherent photochemical instability. In this work, sulfur vacancy-modified CdS (S v -CdS) was synthesized via a hydrothermal acidification method. The introduction of sulfur vacancies enables precise modulation of the electronic properties of CdS, resulting in a narrower bandgap (decreased from 2.77 eV to 2.08 eV) and a broader range of light absorption (extended from 474 nm to 599 nm). Furthermore, it significantly promotes the separation and mobility of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, the S v -CdS catalyst exhibits substantially enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. As a result, the Sv-CdS catalyst shows much stronger photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with lactic acid acting as the sacrificial agent. Under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), the best-performing sulfur-deficient sample, S v -CdS-3, reaches a hydrogen evolution rate of 688.79 μmol g −1 h −1 , approximately 125 times higher than that of unmodified CdS (5.50 μmol g −1 h −1 ).

A CdS-WO 3 S-scheme heterojunction material modified by CQDs was constructed through simple methods, which effectively increases the photocatalytic degradation rate of single CdS. In the composite material, CdS acts as a reducing photocatalyst (RP) and WO 3 acts as an oxidizing photocatalyst (OP), forming an S-scheme heterojunction. In order to solve the photocorrosion problem of CdS, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were loaded onto CdS. The CQDs possess a high work function, enabling them to facilitate electron transfer, enhance the migration of photogenerated carriers, and suppress electron-hole pair recombination, thus improving photocatalytic performance. The characterizations of XRD, TEM, element mapping, and XPS confirmed the successful synthesis of the CQDs-CdS-WO 3 composite. The material not only exhibited a photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 89.7% and 58.8% towards norfloxacin and tetracycline, respectively, but also revealed a certain degradation capability toward methylene blue and methyl orange. The primary active substances relevant in this degradation process are h + , 1 O 2 , H 2 O 2 , • O 2 − , and • OH. After multiple cyclic experiments, the material still maintains stable crystalline structure and degradation activity. Therefore, the successful preparation of this composite material provides a new method for photocatalytic decomposition of antibiotics and organic dyes.
