Oxygen-vacancy Ce-MoO3 nanosheets loaded Pt nanoparticles for super-efficient photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of methanol

Xueqian Zhao,Weiqiang Zhou,Liming Xu,Danqin Li,Zian Huang,Mingming Zhang,Yize Li,Xiaojing Hao,Jingkun Xu

MoO 3 with Pt-like d-band center electronic structure is an ideal catalyst carrier, but its low conductivity, wide-bandgap and poor photoresponse limits the application of photoelectrocatalysis. Designing doping and oxygen vacancies simultaneously in MoO 3 is a candidate strategy to address some challenges. Herein, a 2D oxygen-vacancies Ce-MoO 3 /Pt (OVs-Ce-MoO 3 /Pt) nanosheet is developed using a two-step method of hydrothermal and chemical reduction. The band gap, optical properties, and methanol adsorption capacity of MoO 3 are well regulated after Ce doping and oxygen vacancy introduction. Profiting by the synergistic promotion of sufficient oxygen vacancies and Ce element, the OVs-Ce-MoO 3 /Pt catalyst exhibits super-efficient photoelectrocatalytic activity (2858 mA mg −1 ) and poisoning-tolerance ability towards methanol oxidation, which is superior to the Ovs-MoO 3 /Pt catalyst (1542 mA mg −1 ) and commercial JM Pt/C catalyst (377 mA mg −1 ). These results indicate that the OVs-Ce-MoO 3 /Pt catalyst can serve as a highly promising catalyst in the field of photoelectrocatalysis.

Rapid fabrication and phase transition of Nd and Ce co-doped Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics by SPS

Lan Wang,Xiaoyan Shu,Facheng Yi,Dadong Shao,Kuibao Zhang,Haibin Zhang,Xirui Lu

A series of Nd and Ce co-doped Gd 2- x Nd x Zr 2- y Ce y O 7 (0.0 ≤ x , y ≤ 2.0) ceramics were rapidly fabricated through spark plasma sintering (SPS) within 3 min. The effects of Nd and Ce contents on the phase composition, lattice parameter , active modes, microtopography and microstructure have been investigated in detail. XRD studies reveal that the compositions corresponding to 0.0 ≤ y ≤ 1.0 show a single phase and beyond 1.0 exhibit multiphase. The lattice parameters increase with elevated Nd and Ce content. The grains are densely packed on each other with cube-like shape, and the elements are almost homogeneously distributed in the compound. This synthetic method provides a simple pathway for the preparation of highly densified single phase ceramic at 1600–1700 ℃ for 3 min under pressure of 80 MPa.

Ce-doped TiO2 supported RuO2 as efficient catalysts for the oxidation of HCl to Cl2

Jiahui Liu,Fangyuan Dong,Yaqi Huang,Yanghe Fu,Xinqing Lu,Rui Ma,Fumin Zhang,Shuhua Wang,Weidong Zhu

Reducing the cost of RuO 2 /TiO 2 catalysts is still one of the urgent challenges in catalytic HCl oxidation. In the present work, a Ce-doped TiO 2 supported RuO 2 catalyst with a low Ru loading was developed, showing a high activity in the catalytic oxidation of HCl to Cl 2 . The results on some extensive characterizations of both Ce-doped TiO 2 carriers and their supported RuO 2 catalysts show that the doping of Ce into TiO 2 can effectively change the lattice parameters of TiO 2 to improve the dispersion of the active RuO 2 species on the carrier, which facilitates the production of surface Ru species to expose more active sites for boosting the catalytic performance even under some harsh reaction conditions. This work provides some scientific basis and technical support for chlorine recycling.

Ce-doped CuAl-layered double hydroxides as glucose-triggered cascade catalyst for enhanced antibacterial therapy

Yanqing Liu,Li Xiang,Ping Wang,Weizhe Li,Gnanasekar Sathishkumar,Xiaodong He,Huajun Wu,Runlong Ran,Kai Zhang,Xi Rao,En-Tang Kang,Liqun Xu

Peroxidase (POD) mimicking layered double hydroxides (LDH) has significant potential for various biomedical applications. However, their effectiveness is often constrained by the need for an acidic pH and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Herein, we have developed CuAl-LDH and cerium (Ce)-doped CuAl-LDH (CuAlCe-LDH) to overcome these limitations. By physical absorption between glucose oxidase (GOx) onto CuAlCe-LDH nanosheets, we obtained CuAlCe-LDH@GOx nanozyme end-products. Different high-throughput instrumentation studies were adopted to confirm the formation and physiochemical features of CuAlCe-LDH@GOx. This innovative system leverages glucose to generate gluconic acid and H₂O₂ in situ , thereby locally acidifying the environment and activating POD-like activity without adverse effects. The H₂O₂ produced is further decomposed by CuAlCe-LDH, forming hydroxyl radicals (·OH) with strong antibacterial properties. Further, the as-obtained CuAlCe-LDH@GOx activates the catalytic cascade and demonstrates robust antibacterial efficacy both in vitro and in vivo , with minimal biological toxicity. Therefore, our approach provides alternative, safe, and effective nanozymes with strong POD-mimicking potential for therapeutic applications.

Ce-Pr Co-doped Co3O4 with Enriched Oxygen Vacancies for the Efficient Decomposition of N2O

Yuxin Sun,Yunshuo Wu,Zhuoyi Zhang,Xuanhao Wu,Haiqiang Wang,Zhongbiao Wu

Graphical Ce-Pr co-doped Co 3 O 4 achieved 100% N 2 O conversion at 400 °C over Pr 0.02 Ce 0.2 Co 1 . The introduction of Ce facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies, which were essential for N 2 O activation. But these Ce species strictly inhibited Co 3 O 4 crystallization and surface exposure, which were unfavorable to N 2 O decomposition. By the codoping of Pr, these negative effects were eliminated, leading to remarkable catalytic performance. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) has gained increasing attention as a non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gas, and catalytic decomposition is an effective method for mitigating its emissions. In this study, Ce-Pr Co-doped Co 3 O 4 was synthesized via a coprecipitation method and used for the catalytic decomposition of N 2 O. The experimental results revealed that the N 2 O decomposition achieved 100% conversion at 400 °C on the catalyst with a Pr/Ce/Co molar ratio of 0.02:0.2:1, exhibiting an 80 °C decrease of T 100 compared with that of Co 3 O 4 . The introduction of Ce reduced the size and crystallization of Co 3 O 4 particles, increased the activity of the lattice oxygen of Co 3 O 4 , and facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies, thereby enhancing the activation of N 2 O. However, the introduction of Ce inhibited the crystallization of Co 3 O 4 and the surface coverage of CeO 2 decreased the exposure degree of N 2 O molecules to the Co 3 O 4 surface. Co-doping strategy of Ce-Pr was performed to alleviate the negative effects of ceria. Consequently, the incorporation of Ce and Pr species enhanced the redox properties of Co 3 O 4 , leading to remarkable catalytic performance of N 2 O decomposition. This study elucidated the interaction between Ce and Pr dopants and Co 3 O 4 , and encouraged more attention on designing novel catalysts for N 2 O mitigation.

Abundant oxygen vacancies Ce-doped TiO2 supported Pt nanoparticles for high-efficiency photoelectrocatalytic methanol oxidation

Yufei Hu,Tong Yang,Weiqiang Zhou,Zian Huang,Xuemin Duan,Meisi Yu,Wenjing Zhou,Furui Lin,Danqin Li,Jingkun Xu

In electrocatalysis, the expensive Pt catalysts are prone to poisoning, but the interface interaction between Pt and carrier is expected to overcome poisoning and improve catalytic activity. The key is to design efficient carriers. Herein, a Ce-doped TiO 2 carrier with oxygen vacancies loaded Pt nanoparticles (Ce-TiO 2 /Pt) was prepared by sol-gel and subsequent chemical reduction. Ce-TiO 2 /Pt nanocomposite catalysts are characterized by various techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, EPR, UV–vis DRS, BET, and electrochemistry. As-prepared Ce-TiO 2 /Pt exhibited electrocatalytic activity of 2070 mA mg −1 towards methanol oxidation in an alkaline medium, and the catalytic performance was significantly enhanced to 5505 mA mg −1 under light conditions. Compared to TiO 2 /Pt and commercial JM Pt/C catalysts, the superior photoelectrocatalytic activity, poisoning-tolerance ability, and long-term stability of Ce-TiO 2 /Pt was mostly responsible for the rise in oxygen vacancies, optimization of the electronic structure, and favorable control of morphology after Ce doping. This study provides a new pathway for advancing low-cost, durable, exceptional-performance catalysts for direct methanol fuel cell.

A high-performance aqueous Eu/Ce redox flow battery for large-scale energy storage application

Deliang Zeng,Tianyong Mao,Ziyi Zhang,Jing Dai,Junpeng Ouyang,Zhipeng Xie

We report the performance of an all-rare earth redox flow battery with Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ as anolyte and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ as catholyte for the first time, which can be used for large-scale energy storage application. The cell reaction of Eu/Ce flow battery gives a standard voltage of 1.90 V, which is about 1.5 times that of the all-vanadium flow battery (1.26 V). Large standard voltage is conducive to the improvement of battery energy density and power density. The Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ electrode reaction in a NaCl solution on platinum electrode was investigated detailedly using cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, tafel plot and chronoamperometry. Unlike zinc-cerium flow battery, the active species of Eu/Ce flow battery are always present in the electrolyte, and no liquid-solid phase transition occurs. Thus, Eu/Ce flow battery is free of the problems associated with dendrite growth and theoretically have a longer cycle lifetime. The negative electrolyte is very sensitive to oxygen and can directly cause battery failure if exposed to air. The average energy efficiency of Eu/Ce flow battery exposed to air is only 22.0 %. However, the average energy efficiency of Eu/Ce flow battery stripped of oxygen reaches 82.7 % at 25 mA/cm 2 . Preliminary experimental studies have shown that Eu/Ce flow batteries are a promising method for large-scale energy storage.

Effect of Ce–Dy co-doping on structure, morphology and magnetic properties of strontium ferrite

Siwen Pi,Jie Li,Yingde Zhang,Weina Zhou,Hui Liu,Qing Wang

M-type strontium ferrite Sr 0.98 Ce 0.02 Dy x Fe 12- x O 19 ( x =0.00-0.20) doped with Ce-Dy elements was prepared by solid-phase sintering. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed the formation of the M-type hexaferrite having P6 3 /mmc as a space group along with the co-existence of a secondary DyFeO 3 phase; The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) results show that the grain boundaries of the samples are clear, the crystallinity is good and the grains have been refined; The purity of the sample can be proved by energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and no other elements were found except for doped elements; It is clear that the experimental weight percentages of each element are quite close to the theoretical from the reactants used to synthesize each sample. Meanwhile, the FTIR results show tetrahedral and octahedral tensile vibration peaks induced by Fe–O bonds of M-type strontium ferrite; Through the analysis of the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), when the doping amount of Dy element is x =0.08, the coercive force of strontium ferrite is increased. At this time, hard ferrite with high coercive force and high saturation magnetization intensity is prepared. Demonstrating the unlimited potential of M-type strontium ferrite in the fields of magnetic recording and storage devices.

Self-Promoting Mechanism of Oxalic Acid in Ce–CN-Assisted Photocatalytic Ozonation for Water Treatment

Qi Chen,Weirui Chen,Jing Wang,Gaozu Liao,Xukai Li,Xingmei Guo,Laisheng Li

Small molecular carboxylic acids (SCAs) are common in natural waters, but their impact on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is understudied. This study investigates the effects of various carboxylic acids, such as oxalic acid (OA), formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), succinic acid (SA), and benzoic acid (BA), on a Ce single-atom-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ce–CN) photocatalytic ozonation (PCO) system. Among the tested SCAs, only OA significantly promoted O3 activation and pollutant degradation. When degrading atrazine (ATZ), Ce–CN performed worse than CN, but Ce–CN exhibited superior activity when OA was the target. The OA removal was 98% in the PCO/Ce–CN system, while it was 82% in the PCO/CN system in 30 min. The introduction of OA also enhanced ATZ removal from 55 to 86% within 5 min in the PCO/Ce–CN system. Moreover, OA’s yield during macromolecular organic compound degradation and its proportion among SACs affected PCO/Ce–CN activity. Mechanistic studies showed that OA could bind with Ce–CN, forming a Ce–OA complex that facilitated ligand-to-metal electron transfer (LMET), reducing the redox potential of the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) cycle, enhancing the ATZ removal efficiency, and boosting ozone activation. O3 decomposed into *O and •OH on Ce–CN, which were the primary reactive oxygen species for pollutant degradation. These findings highlighted the unique role of OA in Ce-based PCO systems, offering insights for enhancing AOP performance.

Moderate Carbonization and Nanoconfinement Engineering for High-Performance Fluoride Electrosorption in UiO-66(Ce) Derivatives

Xun Liu,Yufei Shu,Mengxia Wang,Weiwen Chen,Aling Wan,Zhongying Wang

Efficient and selective removal of fluoride from water remains a critical challenge in environmental remediation. In this work, we report a thermally modulated strategy to enhance the electrosorption performance of cerium-based metal–organic frameworks (UiO-66(Ce)) for fluoride removal. Rather than complete carbonization, controlled partial carbonization at 400 °C was found to be optimal, inducing the in situ formation of well-dispersed CeO2 nanoparticles and the development of interconnected mesoporous channels. The evolution of the pore structure with different thermal treatment temperatures was comprehensively characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). This approach effectively balances electrical conductivity and active site availability, leveraging a nanoconfinement effect that restricts CeO2 aggregation, preserves active sites, and facilitates efficient ion transport. The optimized UiO-66(Ce)-400 °C material exhibits a high electrosorption capacity of 73.7 mg·g–1, rapid kinetics, and strong fluoride selectivity in the presence of competing anions. Finite element simulations and electrochemical analyses confirm that the synergy between enhanced mesoporosity, conductivity, and active site accessibility drives superior performance. Furthermore, the electrode demonstrates excellent regeneration and stability over five cycles. This study presents a versatile and scalable approach for engineering MOF-derived materials, offering valuable insights into the design of next-generation electrosorption systems for water treatment.

Chenkai Xu,Yujie Yuan,Valeryia Kasneryk,Maria Serdechnova,Carsten Blawert,Yuankun Wei,Dongmei Zeng,Mengke Wang,Dahai Gao,Hao Wang,Mikhail L. Zheludkevich,You Zhang

Corrosion protection of high-strength aluminum alloys remains a critical challenge, especially for applications in marine and aerospace environments. This work reports BIPT-6, a new cerium-based metal-organic framework designed for sustainable corrosion protection of AA2024 aluminum alloy. BIPT-6 contains both Ce(III) and Ce(IV) ions and is constructed with 2,5-furandicarboxylate (FDA 2− ), a biomass-derived ligand, through a simple one-pot solvothermal method. The structure and composition were verified by a series of advanced characterization methods. BIPT-6 crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group P 2 1/ n . The protective ability of novel BIPT-6 was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It demonstrated good corrosion inhibition efficiency for the AA2024 aluminum alloy samples immersed in 0.05 mol/L NaCl solution containing 5 × 10 −4  mol/L BIPT-6. Finally, BIPT-6 was applied as an additive to epoxy resin to prepare anti-corrosive coatings. The EIS results show that BIPT-6@Epoxy coating system provides a superior corrosion protection and stability to aluminum alloy AA2024 compared to blank coating. The corrosion inhibition mechanism of BIPT-6 was also investigated, highlighting its synergistic effect from dual corrosion inhibitors. This work showcased BIPT-6 as a promising approach for sustainable, smart corrosion protection strategies in aluminum alloys.

Enhancing Preferential CO Oxidation of Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst Through an Acid-Modified Method

Shan Li,Huixia Li,Taotao Huang,Xuebo Chen

The development of efficient Cu–Ce catalysts for selective CO oxidation in hydrogen streams (CO-PROX) remains a critical challenge for hydrogen purification technologies. Herein, we report an acid-modified Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalyst synthesized through HCl-assisted wet impregnation and thermal aging, demonstrating exceptional low-temperature CO-PROX performance. The optimized CuCe0.8(Cl)0.2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst achieves superior CO conversion below 160 °C and maintains stable activity for 50 h at 160 °C. Mechanistic studies reveal that HCl modification induces dual enhancement effects: (1) increased Cu+ species density enhances CO adsorption capacity; (2) elevated Ce3+ concentration promotes oxygen vacancy formation for efficient O2 activation. Complementary characterization demonstrates that the acid treatment optimizes the active species dispersion and creates hierarchical pore structures in the γ-Al2O3 support, which facilitates reactant accessibility and stabilizes catalytic intermediates. The reaction mechanism involves synergistic cooperation between Cu+-mediated CO adsorption, oxygen vacancy-assisted O2 activation, and hydroxyl-assisted bicarbonate intermediate formation on the alumina support. This work establishes an effective acid-modification strategy for designing durable CO-PROX catalysts, advancing the development of a practical hydrogen purification system.
