Hydrate-based CO2 sequestration in marine sediments has emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate global climate change due to its substantial storage capacity and operational feasibility. However, understanding the influence of chloride salts from seawater, such as KCl, NaCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2, on CO2 hydrates phase stability is essential for the practical application of subsea CO2 sequestration as hydrates. This study systematically investigates the phase equilibria of CO2 hydrates in KCl, NaCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 solutions at concentrations of 0–400 mM, encompassing typical marine salinity conditions. The experimental results demonstrate that all four chloride salts exhibit thermodynamic inhibition effects on CO2 hydrates, with the inhibitory effect intensifying as concentration increases. MgCl2 exerts the strongest thermodynamic inhibition effect, suppressing CO2 hydrates equilibrium temperature by 0.96 K at 200 mM and 1.57 K at 400 mM concentrations under 3.0 MPa. The inhibition strength follows the order of MgCl2 > CaCl2 > NaCl > KCl, which correlates well with the ion charge and radius of cations. A thermodynamic model was developed by integrating the Hu-Lee-Sum correlation of water activity with the classical Chen-Guo model for the prediction of the thermodynamic phase equilibria for CO2 hydrates. The proposed model demonstrates high accuracy, with an average absolute deviation of pressure below 2.0% across all tested concentrations. Validation against experimental data and literature values confirms the reliability of the model and serves as a prediction tool for CO2 hydrates phase equilibria with chloride salts. This study advances the understanding of CO2 hydrates thermodynamics in saline systems, elucidating the inhibitory effects of chloride salts and the associated impact on CO2 hydrates stability. The findings provide the thermodynamic foundation for the near-future large-scale adoption of hydrate-based CO2 sequestration.

Recovering Li from spent battery cathodes is crucial for mitigating scarcity and promoting sustainability. Conventional pyro-hydrometallurgical methods face challenges in Li selectivity due to volatilization losses and inadequate phase control. This study proposes a green approach for sustainable battery recycling. It combines CO 2 -mediated carbothermal reduction with CO 2 -saturated leaching to selectively recover Li from spent lithium-ion batteries. By utilizing graphite-mediated carbothermal reduction under precisely controlled CO 2 atmospheres at 800 °C, Li 2 O are converted into stable Li 2 CO 3 , effectively suppressing Li volatilization. Coupled with CO 2 -saturated leaching at 30 °C, the process achieves 99.8 % Li recovery and 99.9 % Li 2 CO 3 purity. A CO 2 -controlled “Li 2 O-Li 2 CO 3 ″ dual-phase dynamic equilibrium model was established, effectively restricting the migration path of Li. This study enhances understanding of gas–solid equilibrium in carbothermal processes and advances sustainable, efficient battery recycling.

Since reservoirs with permeability less than 10 mD are characterized by high injection difficulty, high-pressure drop loss, and low pore throat mobilization during the water drive process, CO2is often used for development in actual production to reduce the injection difficulty and carbon emission simultaneously. However, microfractures are usually developed in low-permeability reservoirs, which further reduces the injection difficulty of the driving medium. At the same time, this makes the injected gas flow very fast, while the gas utilization rate is low, resulting in a low degree of recovery. This paper conducted a series of studies on the displacement effect of CO2-soluble foaming systems in low-permeability fractured reservoirs (the permeability of the core matrix is about 0.25 mD). For the two CO2-soluble blowing agents CG-1 and CG-2, the effects of the CO2phase state, water content, and oil content on static foaming performance were first investigated; then, a more effective blowing agent was preferred for the replacement experiments according to the foaming results; and finally, the effects of the blowing agents on sealing and improving the recovery degree of a fully open fractured core were investigated at different injection rates and concentrations, and the injection parameters were optimized. The results show that CG-1 still has good foaming performance under low water volume and various oil contents and can be used in subsequent fractured core replacement experiments. After selecting the injection rate and concentration, the blowing agent can be used in subsequent fractured cores under injection conditions of 0.6 mL/min and 2.80%. In injection conditions, the foaming agent can achieve an 83.7% blocking rate and improve the extraction degree by 12.02%. The research content of this paper can provide data support for the application effect of a CO2-soluble blowing agent in a fractured core.

With the global demand for carbon reduction, hydrate-based CO2 sequestration evolves as a promising technology for offshore CO2 storage. However, the slow kinetics of CO2 hydrate formation, primarily due to the limited contact area and mass-transfer resistance between immiscible liquid CO2 and the H2O phases under high pressures, remain a critical bottleneck for its practical application. To this end, we proposed a CO2-in-water (C/W) emulsion system by employing a nonionic surfactant, alkyl polyglucoside (APG), using simple high-speed stirring. We systematically examined how the degree of mixing, i.e., stirring rate, impacts the stability of the C/W emulsion and the subsequent CO2 hydrate formation kinetics. Using a full-visual reactor coupled with an in-house developed phase identification algorithm, C/W emulsification and demulsification kinetics were unveiled. C/W emulsion stability under various high stirring rates and APG concentrations was examined. We further demonstrate the superior CO2 gas uptake and rapid CO2 hydrate formation kinetics realized by the synthesized stable C/W emulsion. Our results suggest that increasing the stirring rate substantially speeds up the C/W emulsification synthesis process, achieving only 9 s at an optimal stirring rate of 1600 rpm and 3.00 wt% APG. The stability of C/W emulsion is further enhanced under high shearing rate, with complete demulsification time reaching 5 h. Furthermore, increasing the stirring rate from 800 to 1600 rpm not only improves the C/W emulsion stability but also results in shortened induction time, high CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, and high CO2 final uptake (maximum gas uptake 167.7 v/v with a water conversion of 84.5%). The experimental results provide direct evidence on how the stirring rate affects C/W emulsion preparation and stability. The findings also shed light on a promising emulsion-based method for effective CO2 hydrate formation kinetics promotion, which can be adopted in a series of CO2 hydrate-based applications.

Hydrate-based CO 2 storage (HBCS) in subsea sediments has emerged as a promising climate mitigation method due to its high CO 2 storage capacity and long-term stability. However, practical application encounters significant challenges due to sluggish CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics, primarily resulting from limited liquid CO 2 -water interfacial contact after CO 2 hydrate film formation and blockage. Generating CO 2 microdroplets in continuous aqueous phase forms CO 2 (L) in H 2 O (C/W) emulsion, which enhances CO 2 dispersion and expands the liquid–liquid interfacial area. However, effective methods to synthesize stable C/W emulsion under high pressures and their role in enhancing CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics is less understood and warrant systematic investigation. In this study, we formulate C/W emulsion using an environmentally benign non-ionic surfactant alkyl polyglucoside (APG), and systematically examine the effects of APG concentrations and stirring rates on C/W emulsion stability in a fully-visual reactor. Under optimal 3.0 wt% APG, C/W emulsion forms under 1800 rpm in 13 s and maintains stability for ∼ 7 hrs with average CO 2 micro-droplet size of ∼ 14 μm. The dispersion of liquid CO 2 microdroplets promotes ultra-rapid CO 2 hydrate formation, achieving a CO 2 uptake of 187.8 v CO2 / v H2O (water conversion of 94.8%) with t 90 of 40 min, representing a ten-fold increase compared to the conventional CO 2 (L)–H 2 O mixing system by stirring. Findings of this study will guide effective methods for synthesizing and improving the stability of C/W emulsion under high pressure. Moreover, enhanced CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics enabled by emulsion-based method can be applied in a series of CO 2 hydrate-based applications. The study offers both mechanistic insights and practical guidance for future field-scale HBCS deployment.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) to formic acid (HCOOH) provides an economical solution for the utilization of renewable electricity and addressing climate challenges. However, the catalytic activity is limited by an inappropriate hydrogenation process and competitive hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution. Herein, we prepared palladium (Pd) nanoparticle-decorated mesoporous Cu 2 Se nanoribbons catalyst (Cu 2 Se-Pd). Pd nanoparticles induce charge transfer from Cu to Se, while promoting the hydrogenation of intermediates and suppressing the evolution of H 2 . Experimental results show that the optimal Cu 2 Se-Pd catalyst achieves a HCOOH Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 61.85% at a potential of − 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) in a flow cell. Cu 2 Se-Pd achieves a HCOOH partial current density of − 129.78 mA cm −2 at − 1.1 V vs. RHE, and operates stably for about 15 h at a constant current of − 100 mA cm −2 . To further couple the eCO 2 RR with energy storage, a Li–CO 2 battery device was assembled using Cu 2 Se-Pd as the cathode material. Battery performance tests show that the Li–CO 2 battery assembled with Cu 2 Se-Pd can stably charge and discharge for over 250 h at a current density of 100 mA g −1 . This work provides experimental insights into promoting eCO 2 RR to HCOOH through hydrogenation regulation.

Various synthesis methods, such as the combustion method, sol–gel method, impregnated suspension, precipitation, etc., have been previously proposed for the production of efficient Li4SiO4 sorbents. During these methods, the mixture of the precursors of Li and Si were usually dried through the oven, water bath, or oil bath, which are all energy-consuming and slow processes. To produce Li4SiO4 sorbents quickly and efficiently, the spray-drying technique was employed in this work. The spray-dried sorbents exhibited both excellent CO2 capture capacity and cyclic stability during the multiple cycles, indicating that the spray-drying method was effective for the preparation of efficient and durable Li4SiO4 sorbents for high-temperature CO2 removal. Especially, the sorbent using lithium tartrate as the Li source achieved a considerable first-cycle CO2 sorption capacity of ∼0.275 g of CO2/g of sorbent and still held the capacity of ∼0.248 at the 50th sorption/desorption cycle under the realistically low CO2 concentration of 15 vol %. The excellent performance of the sorbent was demonstrated to be attributed to the corresponding small crystallite size of Li4SiO4, high surface area, large pore volume, and rich porosity.

In this study, novel kinds of MMMs were fabricated by incorporating ZIF-67 nanoparticles into polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1). ZIF-67 (Co substituted ZIF-8) displays stiffer Co-N bond as compared with the Zn-N bond in ZIF-8, which might led to the slightly smaller effective pore aperture of ZIF-67. Good compatibility between ZIF-67 nanoparticles and PIM-1 matrix rendered ideal interfacial morphology. The intrinsic separation performance of ZIF-67 was estimated from our experimental separation results based on the Maxwell model. The calculation demonstrated its superior CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 45, which is twice compared with that of ZIF-8, supporting the high molecular sieving efficiency of PIM-1/ZIF-67 MMMs. Particularly, the CO 2 and H 2 permeability increased by 15.1% and 59.6% for PIM-1 membrane with 20 wt% ZIF-67 loading, meanwhile CO 2 /CH 4 and H 2 /CH 4 selectivity increased by 34.4% and 86.96%, respectively. The strategy of incorporating highly selective ZIFs into polymers of intrinsic microporosity may have promising potential in fabricating high performance membranes for efficient gas separation.

Towards natural gas purification , polymeric membranes generally face challenges of trade-off between permeability and selectivity , as well as CO 2 -induced plasticization effect. Previous works demonstrated that incorporating high-performing nanofillers and crosslinking the polymers are effective methods to overcome these two issues, respectively. In this work, we aimed to simultaneously improve permeability, selectivity and plasticization resistance of polymeric membranes by incorporating surface-engineered nanoporous fillers for CO 2 /CH 4 separation. DD3R zeolite nanoparticles with high purity were synthesized and then surface-functionalized by 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS) to serve as the filler. Mixed-gas permeation measurements showed that DD3R zeolites offered CO 2 -selective channels in 6FDA-DAM polyimide based on molecular sieving effect of zeolitic aperture. 30 wt% DD3R-APTMS zeolite imparted the membrane with CO 2 permeability of 1661 Barrer (increased by 71.7%) and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 28.0 (increased by 44.5%), which was beyond the upper-bound of polymeric membranes. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bond interaction between amino groups on APTMS and carboxyl groups on 6FDA-DAM rendered the resulting DD3R-APTMS MMMs highly enhanced plasticization resistance over 40 bar when equimolar CO 2 /CH 4 mixture as the feed. This work demonstrates a facile approach to simultaneously enhance separation performance and mitigate the plasticization effect.

For high-performance mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), it is crucial to design gas transport channels in fillers to rationally manipulate the structure-property relationship. In this study, the novel porous organosilicon nanotubes (PSiNTs) were incorporated into Pebax to prepare MMMs for biogas purification (CO 2 /CH 4 separation). After comparing the separation performance of MMMs containing PSiNTs and MMMs containing non-porous organosilicon nanotubes (SiNTs),it can be found that the porous structure on wall of organosilicon nanotubes had a significant effect on the improvement of the gas permeability . In addition, the amino-modified PSiNTs (N-PSiNTs) were prepared and introduced into membranes to significantly enhance the CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity. Firstly, the porosity of N-PSiNTs afforded rapid gas transport channels in MMMs and intensified the diffusion mechanism, increasing the CO 2 permeability. Secondly, the reversible reaction between amino groups and CO 2 in MMMs intensified the facilitated transport mechanism, increasing the CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity. In particular, the Pebax-N-PSiNTs with 0.5 wt% and 1 wt% N-PSiNTs exhibited the optimal separation performance, which surpassed 2008 upper bound and were superior to the MMMs incorporated with other kinds of nanotubes.

Fabrication of functionalized hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) with high specific surface area has gained significant research interest and their utilization for gas storage is still a trending research area. Considering the significance of solvent knitting strategy in construction of remarkably high surface area HCPs, we report fabrication of cyano-functional HCPs via one step Friedel-Crafts reaction. The series of HCPs were obtained by copolymerizing the rigid monomer TPB with a 2-napthonitrile in different molar ratio. The resultant co-polymerized polymers contained a plenty of nitrile functional groups and possessed high BET surface area. Among the series of such HCPs, HCP-TPB-CN-3:1 showed the highest BET surface area up to 2017 m 2 g −1 . These HCPs have enriched nitrogen in their pore walls that enhance the facile interaction of CO 2 to achieve higher capture capacity of 21.3 wt% at 273 K. Moreover, the HCP-TPB-CN was explored for CH 4 storage and showed absolute adsorption capacity of 0.35 g/g at 273 K, 80 bar, which is comparable with the porous polymers reported so far. These results highlight the significance of solvent knitting strategy and broaden the scope of HCPs for versatile industrial applications.

Asymmetric Ni-N-Cl sites are built by NH 4 Cl vaporization. • Ni-N-Cl overcomes the kinetic challenges and delivers excellent CO 2 reduction performance. • XAFS, DFT and CW-ODMR reveal the asymmetric coordination mechanism. • Cl coordination creates electron-rich Ni centers with shifted d-band. • Ni-N-Cl achieves 86.2% CO Faradaic efficiency and enables durable Zn-CO 2 batteries for 53 h operation. Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction to value-added chemicals represents a promising pathway for sustainable carbon utilization. However, the symmetric coordination environment of conventional M-N 4 single atom sites restricts electronic structure regulation and limits their intrinsic activity. Herein, we develop an asymmetric Ni-N-Cl coordination structure synthesized via high-temperature NH 4 Cl vaporization assisted strategy. This Cl-mediated asymmetric coordination induces a distinct charge redistribution, generates an electron enriched Ni center and an upward shift of the d-band center closer to the Fermi level. These intrinsic modulations significantly facilitate CO 2 activation and proton transfer to the *COOH, thereby lowering the reaction energy barrier. Consequently, the Ni-N-Cl catalyst achieves a CO Faradaic efficiency of 99.67% at -0.7 V vs. RHE in H cell and 17 h long term stability at -100 mA cm -2 in flow cell. Furthermore, this catalyst delivers a peak power density of 1.62 mW cm -2 and a durability of 53 h. This study provides a general methodology for the rational design of asymmetric single atom catalysts through orbital engineering for high-efficiency energy storage technologies.
